Titans NYC break drought with win over Broncos

A two-try effort to halfback Cody Walker has put the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans NYC side back in the winning books with a thrilling 30-28 win over the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium tonight.

The Titans NYC outfit had not tasted victory since their Round 2 win over South Sydney but broke the trend with a narrow victory over their south east Queensland rivals.

Walker opened the scoring in the 6th minute and then made it a double with the match-winner in the 74th minute to extend the Titans lead by more than a converted try.

The Titans fought their way back from 18-6 down early in the second half to register their third win of the year and steer clear of the bottom of the ladder.

The Titans ran away to an early 6-0 lead after pivot Jordan Rankin converted Walker’s first try in the 6th minute.

The Broncos tied things up at 6-all in the 23rd minute after centre Dale Copley crossed under the posts, with Corey Norman easily adding the extras.

On the back of some crafty work up the middle of the park and a repeat set, the Broncos took the lead in the 27th minute when dummy-half Kurt Baptiste burrowed his way through to score under the posts, with Norman converting to give the Broncos a 12-6 lead at halftime.

The Broncos then opened the scoring in the second half in the 43rd minute after utility Chris Binge charged through the defence to score under the posts, giving Norman another easy conversion to extend the lead to 18-6.

The Titans hit back in the 46th minute when Dominic Walsh, playing in unfamiliar territory in the centres instead of the front row crossed in the corner, Rankin converted to bring the score back to 18-12.

The fight-back was underway in the 56th minute when captain Ryan James found space in the corner to deliver a nice ball to put winger Lachlan Creighton over the try-line, Rankin again converting from the side-line to tie the game up at 18-all.

An error from the kick-return gave the Broncos good field position and winger Jordan Kahu caught a beautifully weighted kick to cross in the corner, the conversion sailed wide giving the Broncos a 22-18 lead with 20 minutes remaining.

The Titans then squared things up when fullback Jamie Dowling charged over on the back of some good team play.

Rankin converted his third try from the side-line to give the Titans a 24-22 lead with 13 minutes remaining.

A brilliant chip and chase try by Walker in the 74th minute extended the Titans lead, and Rankin converted from in front of the posts to give the Titans a 30-22 lead.

The Broncos hit-back in the 78th minute when halfback Louis Frisby scored under the posts giving Norman an easy conversion to reel the final score back to 38-28.

But the Titans held on in defence to record a narrown win.

The Titans will look to stay in the winner's circle when they take on the Sydney Roosters in two weeks time at Skilled Park.

    Gold Coast Titans 30 (C Walker 2, D Walsh, L Creighton, J Dowling; J Rankin 5 goals) defeated Brisbane Broncos 28 (D Copley, K Baptiste, C Binge, J Kahu, L Frisby; C Norman 4 goals).
