NYC Titans suffer heartbreaking loss to Roosters
    Mitchell Olivey and Adam Gardini

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans' NYC side was unrewarded for a gutsy second half figthback in a heartbreaking 36-34 loss to the Sydney Roosters at Skilled Park tonight.

Trailing 16-6 at half-time, the Titans ran away to a 34-22 lead in the 65th minute but were chased down by the Roosters, who levelled the game up at 34-all in the 79th minute on the back of a Ben Jones hat-trick.

Young halfback Brad Murray converted after the full-time buzzer to hand the Titans a heartbreaking loss in a nail-biting finish.

For the second game in the row, crafty halfback Cody Walker scored a double while captain Ryan James was just as inspirational.

James scored a vital try in the 45th minute and set another one up in the 60th minute.

It was the Titans who opened the scoring in the sixth minute after Walker dived onto a deft Jordan Rankin chip kick to plant the ball down just shy of the dead-ball line.

Rankin converted from in front to give the Titans an early 6-0 lead.

The visitors hit-back in the 12th minute when winger Mark Kheirallah scooped up a loose ball and ran away to score under the posts, Brad Murray converted to tie things up at 6-all.

The Titans crossed again in the 22nd minute but Ryan Tongia was ruled to have been held up after some dazzling footwork got him across the line.

On the back of some strong defence to hold the Titans out, the Roosters scored under the posts in the 24th minute after Murray made a break before passing to Hughie Stanley to go through untouched and put the ball down.

Murray’s conversion was successful handing the Roosters a 12-6 lead.

The Roosters scored again in the 28th minute when centre Jones found space to dive over in the corner and give the Roosters a 16-6 lead going into the half-time break.

A knock on by the Roosters in their own defensive zone handed the Titans a great opportunity to hit-back in the opening minutes of the half and they put points on the board in the 44th minute when hooker Matt Srama barged over to score next to the posts.

Rankin converted to reel the score back to 16-12.

James then charged his away across the line in the 46th minute to tie things up and Rankin converted from the sideline to give the Titans an 18-16 lead.

The Roosters hit back in the 49th minute when Kheirallah showed good support play to score his second try of the night under the posts, with Murray converting to give the Roosters a 22-18 lead.

The Titans didn’t take long to hit-back,scoring in the 52nd minute when big front-rower Jarrod Wallace carried three defenders over the line to score next to the posts fo a 24-22 lead.

The Titans extended their lead in the 60th minute when centre Japeth Vaoa showed great speed to scoop up a James grubber kick and score next to the posts as the Titans led 28-22.

On the back of a penalty, alker scored his second of the night in the 65th minute after showing some great footwork and speed to get across and score next to the posts.

Rankin converted to extend the Titans lead to 34-22.

However, the Roosters started their late charge in the 73rd minute when centre Cheyse Blair lept above the pack to pluck the ball out of the air and score in the corner as the visitors trailed 34-26.

A nerve-racking finish was set-up when Jones scored his second of the night in the 76th minute to reduce the Titans' lead to just four points.

Jones then scored his hat-trick in the 79th minute to tie the game up at 34-all, with Murray landing a conversion from the sideline after the bell to break the hearts of the Titans.

The Titans will look to hit-back when they take on the Canberra Raiders in Canberra on Sunday.

    Sydney Roosters 36 (B Jones 3,M Kheirallah 2, H Stanley, C Blair; B Murray 4 conversions) defeated Gold Coast Titans 34 (C Walker 2, R James, M Srama, J Wallace, J Vaoa; J Rankin 5 conversions)

14 points in last six minutes (and 34 overall) ....... Patison - that is what happens when you select guys who can't tackle (Ryan James the exception last night). Just pick 17 guys who can tackle and want to have a go for 80 minutes .... you may be surprised by what happens. 34 points is worthless if you continue to play guys who can't/won't tackle. trust me, you will get greater satisfaction from winning by 6 points to 4.
