RICKY STUART has traded sheer instinct for a safe pair of hands, dumping rookie Cronulla fullback Albert Kelly for Sunday's bottom-of-the-table slug-fest against Brisbane and moving the slightly more experienced Nathan Stapleton to the back.

The Sharks coach is a big admirer of Kelly, 19, but conceded after Sunday's 40-12 whipping by Manly that he was ''probably not up to first-grade'' yet.

Kelly struggled under the high ball against South Sydney and Manly and made some weak efforts in defence. Stapleton, who at 20 has played only 18 NRL games himself, has been shifted from wing to fullback, where he started the season.

Brisbane coach Ivan Henjak has handed another player a crack at fullback, replacing teenager Corey Norman with Josh Hoffman for the game at Suncorp Stadium. Norman is on a six-man bench including the returning Nick Kenny and Ben Te'o. Israel Folau also returns at centre, with wingers Antonio Winterstein and Jharal Yow Yeh also named.

Probably for the best, Kelly will have further opportunities. But you can't beat safe.
