Burleigh star Brent ?Jockey? McConnell plays his 100th Queensland Cup match for the Bears in this important round four clash. McConnell, who has also had stints with the Young Guns and Aspley Devils, is widely regarded as one of the leading halfbacks in the competition. McConnell is beginning to strike up a potent combination with five-eighth Richie Williams. The Jets on the other hand are light on in the key playmaking positions, with first-choice halfback Ian Lacey still sidelined with a calf injury. Young gun Callum Waldrum has impressed in Lacey?s absence but the Centenary junior is no certainty to play this weekend after suffering a head knock in Ipswich?s 24-12 loss to Norths last weekend. The Jets have promoted Keiron Lander to the starting pack after losing Vili Fainga?a to an ankle injury

Frustrated Jets belted by Bears

THE Ipswich Jets continue to be their own worst enemy, slumping to their third consecutive loss with a 34-12 thumping by the Burleigh Bears yesterday.

The Jets were forced to field three debutants, including two Colts players, for yesterday’s match at Pizzey Park after last week’s physical encounter with the Norths Devils took its toll.

Gold Coast Titans contracted halfback Rhys Jacks filled in for late scratching Callum Waldrum, while impressive teenage fullback Eric Alefosio and former American college gridiron star Moses Manu also debuted.

The Jets had a 12-4 lead deep into the first half and Jets assistant coach Shane Walker said his side was “all over them like a cheap suit”.

But the Bears hit back after some costly Jets errors, scoring three unanswered tries to lead at the break.

The Jets were unable to mount their own comeback and wilted in the final 20 minutes of the match as Burleigh ran in seven tries to two.

“It’s disappointing again because, with due respect, the opposition were not that impressive,” Walker said.

“We beat ourselves, they didn’t beat us.

“They scored a couple of 50 metre tries directly from our mistakes.

“The effort was there but silly little mistakes at crucial times lost the game for us.

“Young Rhys had a tough day at the office but towards the end of the game he showed some good touches.”

Young rake Michael Fisher was one of the Jets best players and has performed admirably stepping into the large vacancy left by former star Michael Ryan.

Manu scored a try on debut in the second half but the celebrations were muted as the game was already out of reach.

“Moses looked really good in both attack and defence and he showed he can match it at this level,” Walker said.

Jets forward Danny Coburn said he and his team-mates were “very frustrated” at their performances this season, which sees them languishing third from the bottom on the competition table.

“Its just the same old thing, the effort’s there but the errors are there as well,” Coburn said.

“We matched it with them for a lot of the game but they just capitalised on the errors we made.

“We were disjointed in attack for most of the match so we will have to work on that this week.

“Paul Stephenson was great again and he played the whole 80 minutes in the front row.”

Meanwhile, Ian Lacey’s quad strain is worse than first thought and he is not expected back until Round 8.

Waldrum is also likely to miss this week’s match against the Northern Pride who scored their first win of the season on Saturday.

The Pride hammered Tweed Heads Seagulls 38-6 on the weekend and will likely have the services of several Cowboys NRL players including Michael Bani and Manase Manuokafoa.

In the lower grades, both the FOGS and Colts teams lost to the Burleigh Bears. However, the Ipswich teams in the Mal Meninga and Cyril Connell Cup competitions had improved showings. Results on page 26.

Top-class Toopi puts the roar back into Bears

AN NRL return looks a whole lot closer for former Kiwi Test star Clinton Toopi after he helped guide Burleigh Bears to a strong 34-14 win over Ipswich at Pizzey Park yesterday.

Despite a slow start, in which they allowed Ipswich to score two tries, the Bears turned it around to make it two wins on the trot to the delight of their fans.

While pleased with the efforts of his men across the park, Bears coach Mark Gee said it was Toopi and former Dragons pivot Richie Williams who proved the spark for the side.

Showing no ill-effects of the calf injury that had hampered him over the opening rounds, Toopi was impressive and his coach admitted he was lucky to have the former Warriors star's experience out wide.

"He played the first couple of games under an injury cloud but they came good for him this week and he was great," said Gee, who was also happy with the efforts of young forward Kurt Sorensen.

"He is a great bloke, a great bloke to have around the club with his experience and he is just a genuine good guy.

"That's great for our club for him to come back from the Titans and show that form.

"He puts a lot of importance in the things he does at training and I really think that rubs off on our guys."

Playing a nil-all draw against Wynnum in the opening round, Burleigh fell to Souths Logan before a scrappy 10-4 win over Tweed two weekends back.

But yesterday they were clinical, racking up the points to move into fourth position.


And they have a chance to jump even higher when they meet the Mackay Cutters at home next weekend. Mackay were thumped 52-24 by ladder leaders the Norths Devils on Saturday.

"We have worked really hard on our attack because things haven't been working for us," said Gee.

"We were a little more clinical with what we were doing there and it worked well for us.

"We started slow and let them in with two early tries but they way we fought back and stuck to what we wanted to do was great and hopefully we can continue that next weekend."

* IN Cairns, the absence through injury of Tweed Heads' influential skipper and former Titan Brad Davis again showed as the Seagulls struggled to gain any ascendancy when they were steamrolled 38-6 by the Northern Pride.
