Langer informed the club he had failed a random breath test on Sunday night and was due to appear in court to face the charges on April 19.

Despite it being Langer’s first offence with the club the Broncos have still decided to stand him down from all coaching duties until after his court appearance.

His position with the club will then be re-evaluated after the hearing.

Really poor form. He is supposed to be a leader and this was after their biggest loss at home.

As Coaster said, where is the friends? They let him drive and do this.

Mercifully, it could have been more devastating headlines we were reading today.

Just one thing after another for the Broncos atm...

    new zealand herald
BRISBANE - Australian rugby league great Allan Langer has been fined and lost his license for eight months but escaped a conviction for drink driving.

Langer, 43, faced Brisbane Magistrates Court today where he pleaded guilty to the charge. The Broncos skills coach was fined A$1,000 but his lawyer successfully argued that Langer's coaching career would be seriously affected if a conviction was recorded.

Langer, who played 22 tests for Australia in a 10-year international career, was breath-tested in north Brisbane on March 29, a day after his side were thrashed 48-16 by the Warriors at Suncorp Stadium. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.156 - three times over the legal limit of .05.

Mobile phone video footage supplied to TV stations also showed Langer dancing on top of a table wearing only his underwear in a popular Brisbane hotel hours before being stopped by police.

He was later suspended from his coaching position with the Broncos.

Rugby league legend Allan Langer will return to his coaching duties with the Brisbane Broncos after the club today lifted his suspension over a drink-driving charge.

Langer, 43, who appeared in court this morning and pleaded guilty to the charge, was fined $1000 and disqualified from driving for eight months but no conviction was recorded.

The Broncos have responded by welcoming the skills coach back to the fold as early as tomorrow.

Brisbane chief executive Bruno Cullen said the directors had agreed that the range of penalties already imposed on Langer - including the court’s decision this morning - were sufficient, and the board did not want to be seen to be punishing him yet again.

“Following agreement among directors I met with Allan today and advised him of their decision,” Cullen said.

“I also reminded him again of the seriousness of his indiscretions and the need for them not to be repeated.”

Langer then met head coach Ivan Henjak to discuss the training schedule for the remainder of the week.

The 43-year-old wore a Broncos tie to his hearing in the Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning.

He was detected at a random breath testing site at Everton Park in north Brisbane early on March 29 and charged with drink-driving.

He has six months to pay the $1000 fine. No conviction was recorded.

Langer told police he had drunk ''eight to 10'' XXXX pots and a ''couple'' of Red Bull and vodkas at the Normanby Hotel in inner Brisbane.

He said he thought he would be close to the limit and had consumed his last drink 45 to 60 minutes before being pulled over for breath-testing.

His wife was in court this morning for support.

Solicitor Peter Shields told the court that, due to the offence, his client had lost a lucrative contract as an ambassador with brewing company Lion Nathan and had been suspended from his assistant coaching position with the Broncos.

"Whether [his coaching job] ends in termination or is halted, that will be determined after the matter is dealt with in court today," he said.

Mr Shields asked that a conviction not be recorded, arguing Langer could suffer "serious negative detriment", particularly in regard to a requirement that he travel overseas for work.

He said his client had also suffered great embarrassment due to the media attention on his offence.

"This is not a stock-standard case," he said.

Acting magistrate Alan Taylor said he accepted Langer's case was different, adding media coverage had been "hard to miss".

"I accept Mr Langer has more riding on this than other people," he said.

Mr Taylor described Langer's traffic history - which included four traffic offences in the past four years - as "largely unremarkable" given Mr Shields's submission that Langer drove about 30,000 kilometres a year.

Mr Taylor agreed not to record a conviction.

"The terminated contract [with Lion Nathan] also indicates you suffered a pecuniary punishment greater than the fine here today," he said.

After the hearing, Langer was whisked away in a four-wheel-drive, but outside court Mr Shields told reporters his client "seemed quite happy" with the court result.

"All we asked the court to do was deal with Allan as they would anyone else and that's exactly what the magistrate did," he said.

Asked why Langer did not face the media to apologise publicly today, Mr Shields said Langer had demonstrated his remorse by pleading guilty.

Mr Shields said his client "couldn't be more sorry".

"He's accepted he did the wrong thing," he said.

Footage taken on a mobile phone camera showed what appeared to be Langer dancing in his underpants at the hotel after the Brisbane Broncos crashed to a 48-16 loss to the Warriors.

In a statement released on March 30, Langer admitted to "unacceptable" behaviour.

"People do and are entitled to expect more from me," he said.

"I have let people down by not leading by example. Unfortunately, I can't change the mistake I have made. The only thing I can do is look to the future and try to do better.

"The list of apologies is long and includes my family, the Broncos' family, rugby league fans and the Queensland public.

"I'm embarrassed and I'm angry at myself for not doing the right thing. I failed in being the best I could be, which is how I tried to play rugby league.

"As a first step I will take my punishment on the chin but, more importantly, I give an assurance that I will try to do better in the future."

After details of his drink driving were revealed, Langer was suspended from his job as a Broncos skills coach.

Disgraceful out come all round. Langer 'the untouchable'
If he had killed someone? What then?

Having lost friends to these morons I think they should have locked Langer up and thrown away the key.
