    Devils Build Early Momentum

THE Norths Devils have set their sights on a hat-trick of Intrust Super Cup victories after scoring a hard fought 22-12 win over the Tweed Heads Seagulls.

Devils coach Kevin Carmichael is expecting a tough encounter against the Jets in the round three clash, despite the Ipswich team’s heavy loss to the Redcliffe Dolphins.

A strong two-try performance from former Magpies speedster Jack Reed helped the Devils notch their second win of the season on Saturday.

Norths were guilty of “bombing” numerous try-scoring opportunities in the ABC TV match of the round at Bishop Park.

While disappointed with his team’s finishing touches in attack, Carmichael was thrilled with the defensive effort.

The Devils’ desperation to keep their try line in-tact was evident in the second half when young winger Daniel Ogden showed a blistering turn of foot to run down Tweed flyer Shannon Walker.

The stunning tackle prevented what appeared to be a certain Tweed try at a critical stage of the game.

“If you can get your defence working it’s a good sign and a good way to start the season,” Carmichael said.

The Devils coach conceded his team had enough possession to punish a Seagulls outfit that was rattled by the early loss of experienced halfback Tim Maccan.

“We had a fair bit of footy but we let them back into the game towards the end,” Carmichael conceded.

Norths entered the round two clash without injured five-eighth Jacob Fauid (hand).

But Carmichael had the luxury of calling on former Broncos premiership-winning playmaker Shane Perry to partner Matt Smith in the halves.

Devils hooker Asher Elemani had a big game for the home side, with his probing runs from dummy half and strong front-on defence impressing Carmichael.

Elemani has slotted nicely into the dummy half role following Jay Aston’s departure to the Northern Pride.
