    Schoolboy leader for teen Titans

PROMISING backrower Ryan James has been handed the Gold Coast Titans captaincy in their opening Toyota Cup clash at Skilled Park tomorrow.

Coach Rod Patison, who is toying with the idea of using several captains throughout the season, said the Australian Schoolboys star was an ideal choice to lead the team as they look to build on a tough 2009 season.

"I want leadership out of them all and I'm suggesting we may have a few different captains throughout the year," said Patison.

"But with Ryan I know that it (the captaincy) won't affect him and he will be a great example."

Fielding a young squad last season, with many of the faces returning, Patison was confident the experience of 2009 will hold them in better stead to improve from their disappointing 14th-place finish.

With James leading the way, he will have plenty of support with teen sensation Jordan Rankin, Ronnie Alovili and Dominic Walsh bringing experience after spending the off-season training with the Titans' NRL squad.

"Last year was tough for the under-20s because a lot were exposed as 18-year-olds and we were a younger side in the competition," said Patison, who has taken over coaching from Steve Murphy.

"But thinking ahead, those experiences are going to assist them this year as they attempt to make a climb in performance."

While the squad had enjoyed a solid pre-season, three top performers -- Josh Coyle, Leon Taylor and Steve Gillett -- will be unavailable through injury.

Expecting an onslaught from the rugged Warriors pack, Patison, who coached the majority of his squad to success in the Arrive Alive Cup schoolboys competition at Palm Beach Currumbin, says they are ready to counter any ambush.

"We haven't had a lot of luck against the Warriors before and they traditionally put some big, strong teams on the park," he said.

"But we have good size, we've had a great off-season of physical preparation and I have no doubt we're up to the challenge."

"I have coached a few of the boys before and there are some advantages in that."

"They know all I'm about is trying to prepare them to be the best possible footballers."

Nice start to the season & James had a blinder with his 3 trys & also being the Captain he Lead them like a seasoned pro

Also it's pretty obvious that Patterson has the boys well drilled so hopefully the year ahead will be much better than the previous

New skipper leads teens to victory

NEW Gold Coast under-20s skipper Ryan James assumed the role of chief destroyer as the teenage Titans toppled the New Zealand Warriors at Skilled Park yesterday.

The barnstorming backrower crossed for three tries to steer his side to a 32-26 victory against a notoriously physical Kiwi outfit and usher in a season of promise for the young Titans.

The giant 18-year-old former Australian Schoolboy, who trained with the NRL squad over the pre-season, said expectations were high as the club headed into its third season in the Toyota Cup.

"Last year we were all pretty young, everyone was 17 or 18," said James, a genuine homegrown product who played all his junior footy with Bilambil.

"This year most of the guys are 19 or 20.

"We are a bigger, stronger side and we will be looking to go through the middle of the park and bash sides.

"Last year we won the first seven but then got dominated after a heap of injuries.

"We have set high expectations of ourselves to make the top eight and then we will work from there when we get there."

Fellow forwards Dom Walsh, Luke Page and Ronnie Alovilli were also strong against the Kiwis and together with Chris Bloomfield, Kurt Foggo and James' older brother Tim -- who also plays in the Titans under-20 side -- should more than match it with the bigger sides in the competition this season.

The Titans led 22-12 at half-time and were never seriously troubled.

But new coach Rod Patison will not be pleased with the way they leaked points late in the match.

Like many in the Titans under-20s squad, James learnt his craft under Patison at rugby league nursery Palm Beach Currumbin high school.

    Gold Coast Titans 32 (R James 3, G Borgas, C Bloomfield, L Page tries; J Rankin 4 goals) defeated The New Zealand Warriors 26 (B Tupou 2, S Johnson, J Kutia S Ikahihifo tries; S Johnson 3 goals).

Great Start to the season, hope they don't start off with a hiss and a roar and end up like last year plying like a piss and and a fart! Back's were still abit suspect outwide in defence found wanting at times. Fowards were impressive with Roni Alivili, Ryan James and Dominc Walsh putting in a good preformance 1st up. They died a little bit in the end but a solid start none the less.
