Tweed Hits Back With Tough Win

TWEED Heads maintained its grip on fifth spot and relegated Redcliffe to the bottom of the Queensland Cup table after registering a 28-24 win over the Dolphins at Cudgen today.

It was a welcome return to form for the Seagulls, who entered the match under plenty of pressure to perform after being outplayed by Wynnum Manly the previous week.

Despite an up and down month, Tweed coach Steve Lacey likes the position his team finds itself in.

?The results have gone our way,? he said.

?Two points keeps us in fifth. We?ve just got to be on the ball the next couple of weeks.?

While Tweed is eyeing off a return to finals footy after failing to qualify for last year?s series, struggling Redcliffe finds itself in unfamiliar territory.

The Dolphins now occupy last spot on the table, a standing that many Queensland Cup followers never thought they would see.

Redcliffe (14 points) will finish with its first wooden spoon in the Queensland Cup unless it wins at least one of its remaining two games.

But even that scenario will not guarantee them a move away from the bottom of the ladder as 11th placed Mackay (15) is still displaying strong commitment and was a last start winner over the Pride.

Redcliffe had its moments against the Tweed today but in the final wash up the Seagulls had a little bit too much firepower for the Dolphins.

An 80m special from Shannon Walker got things rolling nicely for the Seagulls.

In typical Redcliffe fashion, the Dolphins came back but the Seagulls always seemed to have their nose in front in the second half.

The likes of Brenton Bowen, Kingi Akauola, Brock Hunter and Joel Brown figured prominently in the win.

Meanwhile, the Sunshine Coast confirmed its participation in this year?s finals series with a 46-0 thrashing of the Central Comets at Rockhampton?s Browne Park on Saturday night.

The Sea Eagles have now soared to 23 competition points and are firmly in the running for a top three finish.

Speedy wingers Ryan Walker and Michael Chapman were standouts for the Sunshine Coast in the nine try romp over the out of sorts Comets.

Walker scored three tries, while Chapman also crossed the white paint and booted five conversions.

The pair also rolled their sleeves up and got through plenty of the tough stuff normally reserved for the bigger men.

Sunshine Coast coach Brandon Costin said both players made good ground out of dummy half early in the tackle count.

But arguably the most dominant player on the park was five-eighth Jon Grieve, who was at his damaging best with the ball in hand.

Costin said the Sea Eagles benefited from having 60 per cent of possession.

?I thought the Comets aimed up defensively, although that might sound a little funny, because we had most of the ball and they still put some good shots on early,? he said.
