Tonga Shines As Jets Down Gulls

GOLD Coast star Esi Tonga has taken his axing from the Titans? NRL side in his stride, with the 100kg centre producing a powerful display in the Queensland Cup for the Ipswich Jets.

Tonga was a menacing figure for the Jets on the left edge in their comfortable 26-18 victory over the Wynnum Manly Seagulls at Briggs Road on Saturday.

His strong surges created plenty of attacking opportunities for the Jets, who were never really threatened on their way to a comfortable victory that keeps them in with a remote chance of playing finals football.

The Jets would need to win their remaining two games ? against Redcliffe and Norths ? and would need other results to fall their way to make the top six.

On their most recent form, coach Glenn Lazarus would fancy their chances of winning their final two matches of the regular season.

Ipswich fans finally got to see the best of their team in the first-half of the clash against the Seagulls.

Tries from Brendan Marshall (pictured), Luke Walker, Dan Coburn and Michael Ryan carried the Jets to a commanding 20-0 lead at the break.

Ryan was a real handful out of dummy throughout the entire match, with his probing runs placing Wynnum Manly under enormous pressure.

The visitors were their own worst enemy, though, particularly in the second half.

They invited trouble after knocking on from the kick off.

The mistakes kept coming, and when they made a simple knock on from an Ipswich goal-line drop out, it was clear that it just wasn?t going to be their day.

The Seagulls, who went into the match without gun Queensland Residents forward Luke Dalziel Don, are now out of finals contention.

One positive for the Seagulls and their fans was the team?s willingness to compete until the final whistle.

Wynnum scored the final two tries of the match and were pressing for a third when time ran out.

The Seagulls also did well to score the first try of the second half through David Georgiou after holding out the Jets on their own line for three consecutive sets of six.

But the Jets hit back not long after Wynnum?s first points of the game when classy centre Marshall displayed a great turn of foot to slice open the Seagulls? defensive line for a 24-6 lead.

Young playmaker Matt Srama successfully added the extras to put the Jets in front by 20 points.

Srama had another strong game for the Jets, who tackle Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval on Sunday.
