I just heard Carty on talkin sport say that Bails hasn't been able to have his arm scanned because of the quarantine. He said that it was still very sore for him today and that they are HOPEFUL (as are all of us I thought to myself) that it is only soft tissue damage. You would have to think he was long odds to play for us this weekend.

I would be really dirty if they pick him for NSW and he makes it worse playing for them.

You can probably listen to that interview later in the week on the 2sm website. Wuld be worth a listen cos he talked about a few different things and especially for this weekends game on a 5-day turnaround.

I'm always wary of these 'easy' games. It seems to me that the Titans are good at breaking streaks. If a team is on a big losing streak, then there's a chance they get their first win against the Titans (Roosters 2007). Likewise, when a team is on a big winning streak, they often get their first loss against the Titans (Brad Fittler as coach of Roosters lost his first game to Titans iirc).

Courier Mail today says Rogers is out of the match with a rib injury. Have to wait for confirmation.

Might be a good chance to give Zillman a good hitout at fullback.

    Roosters v Titans
    Bluetongue Stadium Saturday 5.30pm

If they weren?t already desperate, now the Roosters really have something to play for. They are stone motherless last on the bottom of the NRL ladder and will be keen to rid themselves of wooden spoon reckoning, even if it?s only Round 14.

It won?t be easy though ? they?re up against the table-topping Titans, who turned out one of the performances of the year against St George Illawarra last Monday.

The Gold Coast might be leading the competition, but that doesn?t necessarily mean certain victory over the cellar-dwelling Chooks; John Cartwright?s men may have improved their away record in 2009, but that doesn?t mean the monkey is totally off the back.

The Roosters showed some genuine fight against Manly last week and just like the Sharks have put back-to-back wins together, you?d like to think the victory song might be sung in Bondi Junction in the not too distant future.

A statistic the Titans don?t have to overcome, however, is the hoodoo that is usually associated with winning the week after playing a Monday night game.

So far this year the Raiders, Bulldogs, Wests Tigers, Storm and the Panthers on two occasions have won at the start of the working week and have then been victorious the next week as well.

Watch out Roosters: There are so many points of attack for this Gold Coast team but don?t bother looking past Luke Bailey up front. At one stage last week they thought he?d broken his arm against the Dragons and he was whisked off to hospital. X-rays at nearby Robina Hospital cleared him and he was back on the field before the end of the game, to help his team hold on for a memorable win.

The Roosters have been embarrassingly thin in the forwards this year and if they don?t muscle up to the ?Bull? they might as well give up the ghost.

The NSW Origin prop averages 141 metres this season and there are few better in the competition at getting their team over the advantage line. He also averages just under 18 runs per game, which puts him in the top echelon of front-rowers for involvement, alongside Petero Civoniceva and Steven Price.

Watch out Titans: Setaimata Sa is the danger for the Titans. Capable in so many positions, but at the moment making a go of it at right centre, Sa will be looking to create havoc out wide.

Last week against Manly he scored one of the most skilful tries we?ve seen this year ? starting off with a brilliant around-the-corner offload to Craig Fitzgibbon. On the next play Sa got the ball 30 metres out from the Manly line, showed great hands to draw and pass defenders and get the ball to his winger Sonny Tuigamala, before getting himself back into position to receive the ball off Tuigamala and dive over in the corner.

The Titan who will be marking up against him on Saturday night is Brett Delaney, who sits in fourth for the most missed tackles by any centre in the NRL with 27. Delaney will want to be sure on his feet otherwise Sa will turn him inside out.

Where it will be won: Quite simply, the Roosters will have to win this one in the forwards.

The Gold Coast know they will receive excellent service from their big men ? Luke Bailey, Anthony Laffranchi, Brad Meyers and Ashley Harrison are all players with plenty of representative experience. But the thing is, the Sydneysiders aren?t short of rep caps themselves. Mark O?Meley, Willie Mason, Craig Fitzgibbon and Nate Myles have all played at the highest level while Lopini Paea was World Cup captain for Tonga last year.

The difference is the Titans? pack looks good on paper and on the field, whereas the Roosters? stars aren?t rising to the challenge.

O?Meley and Paea average a poultry 75 and 74 metres per game respectively ? not providing the go-forward required. The previously barnstorming Mason has broken the line just twice this year and Fitzgibbon?s monster workload is also down.

On the other hand, the Titans? red-headed Meyers is quickly reclaiming his best form ? he scored two tries last week and finished close to best on ground. And Laffranchi is second in the NRL for most runs and is in the top 10 for most offloads by a second-rower ? giving the Titans an extra dimension from their men in the middle.

Then there?s little Nathan Friend in the no.9, who typically has made more tackles than any other hooker in the NRL.

There?s not a weakness to be found amongst the Gold Coast?s big men and this should translate to another win for the boys from the Sunshine strip. Scott Prince, Preston Campbell and Matt Rogers will work off the back of their forwards and will have too many points in them for the battling Roosters.

The History: In Round 18 last year, the shoe was on the other foot. The Titans were struck with injuries and in a rut, while the Roosters were the team well on their way to finals glory. At the SFS, the Titans with a team of rookies, won 32-28 ? and it was what started a late-season rot for Brad Fittler?s team.

The two sides have played three times, with the Titans winning two matches to the Roosters one. They are yet to meet at Gosford?s Bluetongue Stadium.

Conclusion: The Gold Coast need to be careful not to take this one for granted ? because the Roosters have too many quality players in their line-up to remain easy-beats for too much longer.

Expect a resurgent Roosters effort ? but the Titans are the genuine article this year and should outclass their hapless opponents. Certainly if the Gold Coast are fair dinkum about making the top eight for the first time in their history, they will win this match and keep in touch with the table leaders.

Match Officials: Referees ? Ben Cummins & Alan Shortall; Sideline Officials ? Russell Turner and Adam Reid; Video Ref ? Russell Smith.

Televised: Fox Sports ? Live 5.30pm.

Bailey, Rogers out of Roosters clash
    Adam Gardini

Jetstar Gold Coast Titans duo Luke Bailey and Mat Rogers have both been ruled out of Saturday’s NRL clash with the Sydney Roosters at Bluetongue Stadium.

Bailey was today ruled out after a bone scan revealed a slight crack in his right arm in the area where a screw had been inserted for a broken arm previously.

Luke Bailey The 29-year-old will not require surgery but will be out of action for between 2-4 weeks. He will have another follow-up X-ray in 10 days.

“It’s disappointing that I’m missing this week but we have a bye next weekend so with a bit of luck I could only miss one game,’’ said Bailey.

“There’s no more damage than I thought there was so we will know more in 10 days time.’’

Rogers has also been ruled out of the match after suffering a rib injury in last Monday night’s 28-24 win over St George Illawarra.

Tough prop Matt White will replace Bailey in the starting front row while flyer William Zillman will move from the bench to fullback, with Preston Campbell switching to five-eighth in place of Rogers.

Maybe Luke Baileys nickname should be Chalky instead of Odwyer

Titans injury list 'no laughing matter'

Helped off the ground after a bone-jarring hit by Dragons giant Mickey Paea on Monday night, concussed Gold Coast backrower Brad Meyers had an admission to make.

"Apparently he came off and told (Titans assistant) Steve Murphy `I don't know who I am'," dead-panned Gold Coast co-captain Scott Prince.

"The word came down from Carty (Titans coach John Cartwright) to Murph, `tell him he's Artie Beetson and get him back out there'."

Yep, Meyers has not heard the end of it since coming off second best to Paea.

Not that he can remember the incident.

Or his two-try heroics in the Titans' 28-24 win at Skilled Park.

"Red (Meyers) got a double but he can't remember it. We just won't tell him he scored anything," said Titans backrower Anthony Laffranchi with a laugh.

While the jokes have kept coming at training this week - at Meyers' expense - the Titans' injury list is suddenly no laughing matter.

Titans boss Michael Searle has painted a bleak picture ahead of their NRL clash with the lowly Sydney Roosters at Gosford on Saturday.

Although named in an extended Titans squad, Meyers, pivot Mat Rogers (ribs) and Luke Bailey (arm) are all in serious doubt.

"We will have a very different side to what we had on Monday night," Searle said ominously in Brisbane on Thursday.

He said Rogers was the worst of the injured ranks, considered "highly unlikely" to run out against the Roosters.

"And Meyers we've still got get to get through because of the head knock," he said.

Meyers was close to best on ground in his stunning performance, stepping up in the absence of injured backrower Mark Minichiello.

Indeed Prince hinted that Minichiello - once mooted for Origin duty - may not receive a walk up start once he recovers from an ankle injury.

The impressive performance of Luke O'Dwyer, replacing late withdrawal Ashley Harrison due to a swine flu scare, gave another indication of the Titans' depth.

"Due to the injuries we had (against Dragons) guys had to play big minutes like O'Dwyer and (Ben) Graham, who probably aren't quite used to it," Cartwright said.

"O'Dwyer was probably our best player, and Meyers best on ground until he was injured.

"It's good that we are not relying on the same players week in, week out."

O'Dwyer said he knew he had big shoes to fill once told that he was running out instead of the quarantined Harrison.

"A couple of the guys started sneezing and winking in the dressing sheds (after Harrison was quarantined)," O'Dwyer laughed.

"But we all knew that we had to dig in and give that bit extra."

Prince said they could not afford to drop their guard against the desperate Roosters.

"They have been struggling all year," Prince said.

"We don't want to be the team that plays them back into form.

"At Gosford not a lot of people will be watching but we've got to turn up with the right attitude."

In some welcome news, the Titans will welcome Harrison and flying winger Kevin "Flash" Gordon (groin) back against the Roosters.

That preview from NRL.com really highlights just how much we are going to miss the Bull.

With Zillman and Campbell around we can cover for Rogers easy enough but it will be really tough without the Bull up front. The worst thing about this game is it is a game we 'should' win and now we will be up against it.

On the other hand, this sort of adversity might be just what we need to shake off the possibility of any complacency against the wooden spoon favourites.

In the last 2 years these sort of injury problems have spiralled out of control. Let's hope that with the bye coming up and now a reduced Origin commitment with Bailey definitely out and maybe Laffranchi out we can regather some fresh troops and keep the season on the rails.

It will be time for Cannings and Henderson - both of whom were outstanding against the Dragons - and White to stand up and be counted. If we can get over the weak as water Roosters forwards we will win, simple as that.

    'Tracer bullet' ready to fire
    Pat McLeod

SCOTT Prince may be loading the gun, but he expects the club's own 'Kamikaze Kid' to be the one wreaking havoc again against the Roosters on Saturday.

"That's what I call Luke O'Dwyer, Kamikaze," Prince said yesterday of the Titans underrated utility player.

"He runs the perfect line and loves the impact. He's like a tracer bullet."

In his third season with the Gold Coast club O'Dwyer has grown in stature from reliable stand-in to impressive front line impact player.

A bigger physique thanks to an off-season of muscling up paired with a tougher mental mindset is reaping O'Dwyer big rewards on-field.

Against the Dragons on Monday night he was one of the Titans' best when he started in the place of swine flu casualty Ashley Harrison. He scored a try and was lethal in attack and defence.

"Yes, Luke was one of our top players," coach John Cartwright said yesterday.

"He played almost 70 minutes as opposed to about half of that when he has been coming off the bench. He is up around that 100 game mark and playing some of his best footy."

Prince said there were no downward glances from teammates when they found out late Monday that Harrison had been quarantined and O'Dwyer would be starting.

"Harro is a great player, but I know for a fact that nobody thought we would be losing anything with 'Chalky' O'Dwyer coming in," said Prince.

"Chalky gets the job done, simple as that. I have noticed, especially over the last year how much he has matured and how he is so much tougher mentally. He's a real leader now.

"He runs a beautiful line and from a halfback's point of view there are few things better than getting the ball to a player in that situation.

"And he doesn't care what is in front of him.

"He puts his body under pressure and takes the bump ... his Kamikaze run."

Prince said O'Dwyer was also renowned in the club as having arguably the best tackling technique.

Despite his stellar performance in the Titans' four-point win over the Dragons, Chalky, at this stage, is back to the bench against the Roosters with Harrison expected to take his place at the back of the scrum.

The 26-year-old Tweed Heads product shrugged off the relegation.

"I just do what I can for the team," he said.

"If that means coming off the bench, so be it."

    Prince sympathised.

"I don't care what anyone says, nobody likes to come off the bench. Everyone wants to be in that starting 13," he said.

"But when you look at our bench this season we lose nothing. When Chalky comes on he not only maintains the momentum, he lifts it.

"It was great to see him score on Monday night, but I know that isn't what he is all about.

"What pushes his buttons is the confrontation off the tackle.

"He's a tough bastard. He loves running through brick walls."

The Titans' three quarantined Origin players, Harrison, Luke Bailey and Anthony Laffranchi, will all complete their isolation period today -- which is a rest day -- so they will rejoin the squad when they fly out tomorrow morning for Saturday night's clash with the Roosters at Bluetongue Stadium, Gosford.

    NRL PREVIEW ROUND 14

Sydney Roosters v Gold Coast Titans, Saturday 5.30pm (EST), Suncorp Stadium

Given they challenged for a solid hour, it was a shame that the Roosters' last-round loss to Manly was the one that consigned them to the NRL basement. The margin also didn?t do the boys from Bondi justice, though if the team is any chance of competing again in 2009, they need to learn to play through the final quarter of matches. The Titans started ruthlessly against St George Illawarra, and against the league's worst defensive unit, a similar start could see the two points wrapped up by half-time. With Mat Rogers' late exit proving to be a false alarm, and the return of young flyer Kevin Gordon, the Titans attack will be as potent as ever though it remains to be seen if co-captain Luke Bailey succumbs to a suspected broken arm before game time.

Laurie says: ?On paper this game is a no-brainer. But I actually give the Roosters a shot of causing an upset against a Titans side coming off a short turnaround after an emotional win against the Dragons. The big question is how much gas will Gold Coast have left in the tank? I will still back the Titans, but I think it will be a lot closer than most people think.?

    Sydney Roosters v Gold Coast

    Saturday, Central Coast Stadium, 5.30pm

    Referees: Ben Cummins, Alan Shortall
Head to head: Roosters 1, Titans 2
Last clash: Titans 32 bt Roosters 28 at SFS (Rd 18, 2008)
TAB Sportsbet: Roosters $2.35, Titans $1.57
    FootyTAB: Roosters +4.5 points

The Roosters are the new wooden spoon favourites. having lost seven of their last eight games to sink to the bottom of the competition table. Even the Sharks have gone past them, albeit on points for-and-against differential. After the Roosters lost 38-18 to Manly last weekend, there was plenty of focus on the Roosters having been more committed in that match. It was true, they were more committed, but the fact is that despite being more committed they still got whacked in the end. So they've still got to dig themselves out of a hole, and it obviously won't be easy against the Titans, who have won back-to-back games, over the Sea Eagles and Dragons, after losing three of their previous four. The thing the Roosters might have going for them here, if they can make it count, is that the Titans are still a questionable commodity away from home. The Titans are 2-4 on the road, as opposed to 6-0 at home.

The Roosters have really missed injured fullback Anthony Minichiello this season. For so long he provided great starts to their sets with his energetic kick returns, and they lack thrust out of the back now. But they still have some other top players, and it's fair to say that, overall, the team has too often lacked commitment this season. The Roosters will probably take something positive out of their game against Manly, and aim up at the start of this one, but they badly need something good to happen to them, to give them a real kick-start. If they fall behind early in this game, their resolve will be tested again. The Roosters can make a game of it at home, but the Titans deserve favouritism.

ROOSTERS: Sam Perrett, Sisa Waqa, Setaimata Sa, Ben Jones, Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Braith Anasta (c), Mitchell Pearce, Mark O'Meley, Jake Friend, Lopini Paea, Shane Shackleton, Willie Mason, Craig Fitzgibbon. Interchange: Nate Myles, Frank-Paul Nuuausala, Tom Symonds, Mitch Aubusson.

TITANS: William Zillman, Kevin Gordon, Esi Tonga, Brett Delaney, Chris Walker, Preston Campbell, Scott Prince (c), Matt White, Nathan Friend, Michael Henderson, Anthony Laffranchi, Brad Meyers, Ashley Harrison. Interchange: Aaron Cannings, Will Matthews, Luke O'Dwyer, Josh Graham.

Willie Mason ruled out of clash with Gold Coast with knee injury

    June 12, 2009

Former Test star Willie Mason has been ruled out of the Sydney Roosters side for Saturday night's NRL clash with the Gold Coast at Bluetongue Stadium.

Mason pulled up with a sore right knee after last Saturday's loss to Manly, the same knee he had reconstructed after an anterior cruciate ligament injury late last year.

His place in the side will be taken by Anthony Cherrington, his first NRL game this year after overcoming a career-threatening fracture in his foot.

Despite the scoreline last week the Roosters played better than i have seen them play all year. They were in the Manly game right up until the last quarter. This match is going to be hard for the Titans and a upset is a definite possibility.
