Default Round 9: Wynnum Manly Seagulls vs Ipswich Jets 09

    WYNNUM MANLY v IPSWICH JETS
Sunday, May 10 @ BMD Kougari Oval 3pm

TITANS player Sam Tagatese is poised to make a surprise comeback in Ipswich Jets colours on Sunday. Tagatese, one of the Titans? major off-season signings, has not played a game since he limped from the field with a groin injury in Ipswich?s round three loss against Souths Logan. The former Melbourne Storm forward has not been named in the Ipswich line-up, but it?s understood he?ll play centre or back-row for the Jets in the BMD Kougari Oval clash. Ipswich is shooting for its fourth-straight victory, while the Seagulls hope to make it back-to-back wins for the first time in 2009 after downing Tweed Heads last weekend.

Jets No Match For Gutsy Seagulls

WHEN a game hangs in the balance, you often need your best player to stand up and deliver.

That?s exactly how it panned out at BMD Kougari Oval today when Wynnum Manly back-rower Luke Dalziel Don cracked open a tense arm-wrestle with one devastating touch of the ball.

Wynnum Manly was leading 10-4 in the 54th minute when the long-striding forward broke through the Ipswich line and sent David Georgiou on his way to the try-line.

Matt Seamark?s conversion put the Seagulls in front 16-4 and they were never threatened from that point on as they powered their way to a 24-8 victory.

Dalziel Don capped off a typically strong game when he completed a stunning movement that featured a brilliant pass from Jason Moon.

While Wynnum Manly had a host of strong individual performers today, it was their collective effort that underpinned the club?s third win of the year.

The Seagulls continually repelled the visitors with a superb defensive display off their own line.

Their determination was there for all to see midway through the second half when the Seagulls? outside backs somehow managed to hold up Ipswich centre Jackson Nicolau.

Nicolau looked certain to score, but the Seagulls got their hands under the ball and the Chook Pen roared their approval.

The Jets entered the match on the back of a three-match winning streak, but the intensity and execution that carried them to those victories was sadly lacking.

Paul Stephenson tried his best to inspire the Jets with a massive hit on Jason Williams in the second half.

Fellow prop Matt McPhee was also impressive for the Jets.

But the day clearly belonged to the Seagulls, who showed their intent in the opening stages with some strong defence.

Wynnum Manly?s Simon Phillips opened the scoring in the 24th minute when he was on the spot to ground the ball following a mistake from Luke Walker in his own in-goal.

But the Jets hit back almost immediately when a slick backline movement resulted in a slashing try to giant winger Ramon Filipine on the left flank.

Inspirational Seagulls skipper Adam Brideson put the home side back in front when he caught the Ipswich markers napping and burrowed his way over the line.

The conversion gave the home side a 10-4 lead at half-time.

The six point lead was a handy buffer for the Seagulls given the Jets had a nice wind at their backs in the opening 40 minutes.

Having recorded back to back wins for the first time this season, Wynnum Manly is steadily climbing the ladder and will now concentrate on taming the Easts Tigers in next Saturday?s local derby at Langlands Park.

The Seagulls face an anxious wait on the fitness of key forward Chris Muckert (neck), who was taken to hospital.
