Serbian rugby league club for sale on eBay

A SERBIAN rugby league club is for sale lock, stock and jerseys on eBay.
Vuk Popovic, player, owner and president of rugby league team based in town of Nish, Serbia, says he has decided to sell the club to the highest bidder.
"The club has just completed the season in a top national division and (has the) privilege to be part-time coached by a rugby league legend John Risman," Popovic writes on eBay.

"I am also a commentator of NRL for regional TV station in Serbia (better than Ray French and Phil Guild(sic) put together). With agreement with board of directors and players of our club I decided to sell 100 percent of ownership to the highest bidder to raise funds for a club, develop a youth academy and attract more sponsors.

"We are group of genuine rugby league enthusiasts but our funds are limited and most of the time it is the players who pay travelling expenses etc."

Nish has 26 active players, even board members, vice-president and president, a fan club of about 50 and a weekly spot on local TV.

Popovic says the new owner will get:

? legal documentation of owning a club

? right to change a club name trough re-registration with Serbian Ministry of Sports (current name is Hammers Nis)

? board seat, active role in deciding club maters

? marketing opportunities on TV, ads on our jerseys, another equipment

Serbia is currently ranked eighth in Europe in rugby league.

Oct-01-08A: Attendance of our matches depends on how big our advertising budget for that match is. For one game we advertised trough $200 worth of posters and more then 3000 people showed up, all newspapers run a reports plus a national television did a story for prime time news. On rest of our matches there is around 400. As for GF, I think that Manly will want it more.But I am 100% sure who will win Serbian GF next year. Cheers

A: Hi Sir. Club is not in debt. At this moment there is around $300 on clubs bank account mainly for traveling expenses. Players are all amateurs but get benefits at their respective universities for playing rugby league. Board members are not paid any wages at this time. Thank you for bidding and good luck.

He's doing one thing. He's raising the profile of the sport there. These are guys who play for love, not for huge pay cheques, and this will do more than any of their posters or newspaper ads, and make some money for the club!

I wouldn't be surprised if Rusty brings them out for his sevens tournament after this.

They could do a tour, playing aussie teams.

Serbia is very beautiful and cheap country. You can find accommodation with breakfast in good Hotel from 25 euro in Belgrade. Belgrade is very big city with population of 2 million people, with very good bars, restaurants, disco clubs, very nice girls,? and very cheap beer, about 1 euro in bars. Come to Belgrade we promise you good rugby and fun

It may seem like a joke to a lot of fans, but to followers of the international game, Serbia is a legit rugby league nation.

Sure it's in it's first stages and it's really grassroots, but it's great to see people play league in Serbia.

I think people would be willing to chip in, I just think offering the ownership of the club is over the top. Because it's a bit of an ask to ask someone in another country to take on responsibility for the operations and debt of a club you have no direct control over.

It'd be far more successful to remain in Serbian hands, someone who understands the market, the people and has connections.

I believe a PayPal style call for donations would be far more lucrative!
