Gold Coast Stadium honoured as part of Centenary Celebrations

Gold Coast Stadium, the former home of the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans, was today honoured as a site of historical significance to rugby league.

As part of the game?s Centenary of Rugby League celebrations, a special ARL Centenary Plaque was unveiled in recognition of the ground?s importance to rugby league on the Gold Coast.

The ARL Centenary Plaque will be installed permanently at Gold Coast Stadium ? one of almost 180 sites around the country being chosen as venues of historical significance during the game?s 100th birthday celebrations.

Jetstar Gold Coast Titans chairman Paul Broughton was on hand for the presentation of the plaque, along with Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke and former Gold Coast Seagulls forward Kevin Campion.

Gold Coast Stadium was the home ground of the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans during the club?s inaugural season in the NRL in 2007 before the construction of Skilled Park at Robina.

As Carrara Stadium, it was home for the Gold Coast Chargers from 1996 to 1998 and premiership football was first played at the ground on March 18, 1994 when the Gold Coast Seagulls upset the Brisbane Broncos 25-12 before 22,688 screaming fans.

It was on that day when tough forward Campion scored his first two tries in first grade and also kicked a goal to cap a memorable day.

?No one expected us to win that day and I don?t think we even expected to,?? recalled Campion, who now resides on the Gold Coast and is a Titans member.

?It was just one of those amazing wins.??

Broughton said while the club had moved home base to Skilled Park this season, it was important to embrace the significance of Gold Coast Stadium in the history of rugby league in the area.

?This is all about recording history,?? said Broughton.

?If you don?t look after your past you don?t have a future.??

The unveiling marks the halfway point of the ARL Centenary Plaques program.

I was at that game against the Broncos.

Look at that crowd figure. That is without all of those stands that ran down the inside of the playing surface last year and we maxed out at about 17,000.

I don't remember being uncomfortable but we must have been packed in like sardines!!
