Pity about the rain last week. It spoiled an awesome game. Ipswich never gave up even though alot of the refs decisions seemed to go against them. It was a very gutsy win.

Sths Logan looked good against Tweed a few wekks ago so this should be a great game.

    Hot Magpies Burn Jets

SOUTHS Logan has survived a later scare to edge out the fast-finishing Ipswich Jets in a bruising round seven Wizard Cup encounter at Briggs Road.

The Magpies led Ipswich 20-4 at half-time, but were nearly run down by a gutsy home side in a thrilling finish.

Souths Logan coach Paul Bramley was a relieved man after the Magpies held on for a 20-18 victory.

Bramley said the warm conditions took its toll on the players, many of whom had only arrived from chilly Canberra on match eve.

“The heat got us again,” Bramley said.

“They’ve done a week in Canberra where it’s really cold, then come up here on a Saturday and it cooks their brains.”

The win allowed the Magpies to draw level with the Jets on 12 competition points.

“That was a game we probably wouldn’t have got in the past,” Bramley said.

“To me, they’re the best side we’ve played.”

Powerhouse five-eighth Justin Carney and fullback Josh Dugan were standouts for the Magpies.

The young guns are regulars with the Canberra Raiders Under 20 team but were set loose in the Wizard Cup on Saturday.

Carney scored a brilliant individual try just on half-time when he burst through the Jets line to put the visitors in front 20-4.

Dugan also made a number of sizzling runs and regularly defused threatening kicks behind the Souths Logan front-line.

The Magpies made all the running in the opening minutes, with flying winger David Milne crossing for the opening try in the seventh minute.

Milne showed blistering pace down the right flank to score in the corner from a well-placed short kick.

“He’s one of the fastest in the club at the Raiders,” Bramley revealed.

    “He’s a former sprinter.”

But Milne and his tiring teammates didn’t receive too many more opportunities in the second half.

Despite losing prop Aaron Sweeney to the sin-bin late in the second half, Ipswich made all the running and were rewarded with tries to Troy O’Sullivan, Michael Ryan and Scott Ireland.

Ireland’s try in the corner came in the 77th minute and brought the Jets to within two points.

But the big winger was unable to convert the try from the sideline.

Ipswich launched one last attacking raid but lost the ball deep inside their own territory.

The match finished on a sour note, with players from both sides trading blows. Souths Logan were awarded the penalty.
