To get something decent for under $400 your best bet is probably going to a phone store, finding a phone you like and seeing what sort of deal you can get with a cap deal. Probably end up getting most phones for nothing. You will be tied in for 24 months though.

Agree with HB, Nokia N Series phones are pretty good.

be wary of buying a fone via ebay

my sister bought a motorola KRAZR from a reputable buyer brand new and in 6 months the screen has died and in need of repair

motorola said because it was resold the warranty is void

I'd agree with the above advice.
I've never had trouble with my Nokia's. Well, not much anyhow.
Got a motorola recently. Cuts out in the middle of calls, turns itself off, the alarm will randomly not go off (like this morning!), locks up most of the time when using the Next G services.

Next phone I'm going back to Nokia. The N series looks swish, but really depends what you're going to use.

If nokia's are out of your price range, sony ericission are not to bad, can get a few good flipphones for 100 to 150.

But Hodgberro is right, steer clear of motorola's my gf had the razor and ended up getting 3 replacments and each one had the same problem, we ended up having to threaten to go to consumer watchdog to get her money back.

If i remember they kept freezing or dying even when fully charged.

It can be a coin flip though. In contrast to Hoppy's experience with Motorola Razrs my mate who is a construction worker got one when they hit the market and his is still kicking. He loves it. He's never had a phone last more than 6 months because of his job and/or recklessness. Basically if its technological he can bust it without trying.

But I would have to agree that if in doubt, go Nokia. I'm not loyal to any set brand and have owned MANY phones. I usually know what I'm buying when I buy it and haven't had any problems because of that. But when my last phone (Samsung) looked like it was on its last legs 4 days out from me going interstate for a bit and I had no time to check out the market, I grabbed a Nokia cause its always a safe bet.
