I watched the Broncos game in amazement and I'm suprised nobody is talking about in this subject.

Why didn't Lockyer come from the field when he originally damaged his knee the first time?

I could see he did ligament damage watching from my lounge room, yet Lockyer stays on the field with no trainer attending him and no replacement coming to meet him.
He can hardly walk and then tries a drop kick that is lucky to get 10 metres in the air.
Lockyer tries to run on a damaged knee and stuffs it for the year.

    Where was the trainer?
    Why wasn't he replaced?
    Is Lockyer stupid?

P.s. I was one of Lockyers original supporters while he was getting a bagging in his earlier career but his decision to stay on the field was beyond me.

    Default Tri Nations

It will be interesting to see who they choose for the tri nations then. With Locky out will they shift Thurston to 5/8 and let Prince steer the ship from half??? Hope so

I thought there wasn't any Tri Nations this year?

Devastating news not only for Broncos fans but rugby league and sports fans.

I feel so sorry for Darren missing the Broncos title defence and just after they were going so very well, especially through the Origin period, they were rallying for one almighty title defence.

But without Lockyer, can they do it? Not bloody easily, they aren't anywhere near the same team without Lockyer.

There is not Tri Nations this year, only a one off test against New Zealand before the Kiwis go on the All Golds tour of Britain. Next year is the World Cup and the next Tri Nations is in 2009 but it is rumoured that France may join the tournament making it a quad nations.

I just realised, with Lockyer injured, who will be the marquee Australian player for the All Golds tour?

Exactly. Terrible, because Lockyer is a modern legend and I greatly wanted to see him imulate the Dally Messenger.

That is Lockyer and Johns both lost.

We can look at current and past players, but they must be GREATS.

I reckon Brad Fittler is worthy.

Karmichael in the hunt as Broncos No.6
    Sunday, July 15, 2007 - 10:01 PM

Test fullback Karmichael Hunt looms as the man most likely to assume the Brisbane No.6 jumper as the Broncos look to pick up the pieces following the loss of inspirational skipper Darren Lockyer for the remainder of their NRL premiership defence.

In a devastating weekend for two of the competition's powerhouses, news that Lockyer would undergo a full knee reconstruction came through just hours before Bulldogs prop Willie Mason was rushed to hospital to realign a dislocated wrist.

Mason is rated some chance of returning in time for the finals - pending scans later this week - but Lockyer faces nine months of rehabilitation after rupturing the ACL in his right knee against North Queensland on Friday night.

Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has a few options as he looks to fill the gaping hole left by Lockyer's unavailability, though Hunt is favoured to get the role.

Rookie Joel Moon is another option as is Shane Perry, the man who played halfback in last year's premiership winning outfit.

But Bennett is a fan of Hunt's playmaking potential after trialling the Queensland and Test custodian at halfback in the early rounds of the competition.

Rookie Denan Kemp is an obvious replacement at fullback should Hunt be shifted, but former Broncos great Gene Miles believes the defending premiers will struggle no matter who assumes the five-eighth role.

"I think it could be mission impossible," Queensland selector Miles told AAP.

"They depend so much on him and he's been so durable over the years that they really haven't had to face a long period without him.

"He didn't dominate Origin this year as he's done in previous years but personally I would not have wanted to go into the series without him."

The news on Mason is slightly better, with the best case scenario seeing the Test prop return just before the finals.

Mason's season could be over though if scans later this week reveal a fracture or ligament damage in the joint.

"He had a reduction of his dislocation under anesthetic last night," Bulldogs club doctor Hugh Hazard said.

"He'll have some MRI scans later in the week just to check the status of the ligaments around the wrist.

"It's a most unusual injury so we'll just have to wait and see.

"He sounded alright this morning, once it got back in I think he was feeling okay."

Mason was one of several injury concerns for the Bulldogs, with Cameron Phelps to visit a specialist on Monday to determine the extent of a facial fracture.

Prop Mark O'Meley is set to miss another three weeks with a hamstring strain while Willie Tonga (groin) and Sonny Bill Williams (ribs) are some chance of taking on Gold Coast on Friday night.

The Bulldogs maintained their spot in the NRL top eight despite a 30-20 upset loss to the Penrith on Saturday night.

The New Zealand Warriors jumped ahead of them into seventh with a 44-16 hammering of St George Illawarra, while Canberra kept in touch with the finals contenders after crushing Gold Coast 56-10 at home.

Parramatta bounced back from Monday night's loss to Newcastle by holding off a late charge to beat South Sydney 18-12, Rabbitohs backrower Manase Manuokafoa held up over the line in the dying stages as the visitors looked to send the game to extra time.

The win lifted the Eels to third but the game was overshadowed by a post-game verbal stoush between rival coaches Jason Taylor and Michael Hagan - Taylor left fuming after the Rabbitohs were denied permission to warm up on a field adjacent to Parramatta Stadium.

Round 18 will wrap up on Monday night when premiership favourites Melbourne host Newcastle at Olympic Park.

    Bronco Lockyer undergoes knee surgery

    Wednesday, July 25, 2007 - 4:15 PM

Broncos skipper Darren Lockyer is expected to be available for Brisbane's last 2008 pre-season game after successfully undergoing a knee reconstruction.

Dr Peter Myers of Brisbane Private Hospital repaired Lockyer's torn anterior cruciate ligament as well as knee cartilage damage.

Dr Myers said Lockyer should start running in five to six months and start contact training in February.

He expected Lockyer to be available for Brisbane's final pre-season trial match in the first week of March.

Lockyer damaged his right knee late in Brisbane's NRL win over North Queensland on July 13, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

    Lockyer's knee surgery successful
    July 25, 2007 - 7:10PM

The surgeon who reconstructed Darren Lockyer's knee said he had "no doubt" the Broncos skipper will bounce back to his best in 2008.

Dr Peter Myers confirmed Lockyer would be ready for the 2008 NRL kick-off after successfully repairing the Test pivot's torn anterior cruciate ligament as well as knee cartilage damage.

Lockyer damaged his right knee late in Brisbane's NRL win over North Queensland on July 13, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

Asked if Lockyer could return to his best, Dr Myers said: "No doubt. He's a good athlete, a good competitor, he will rehab well and he will be back."

Dr Myers said Lockyer should start running in five to six months and be contact training in February.

He expected Lockyer to be available for Brisbane's final pre-season trial match in the first week of March.

Lockyer joins a worrying injury list at the Broncos which also includes Brent Tate (knee, season), Karmichael Hunt (hamstring, five weeks) and Justin Hodges (hamstring, three weeks).

Dr Myers said Lockyer would spend two weeks longer than usual on crutches, up to five weeks, after he damaged both menisci - cartilage that lines the knee joint.

But Dr Myers - of the Brisbane Private Hospital - said it would not extend Lockyer's recovery.

"It slows initial recovery. He will be on crutches for an extra couple of weeks - it doesn't increase the long term recovery," he said.

Dr Myers said he knew "straight away" that Lockyer had torn an ACL when he saw the Broncos captain's knee buckle when he tried to step off his right leg against the Cowboys.

"Sixty-five per cent of ACLs occur changing directions (with) no contact," he said.

Lockyer becomes the fifth player on the current Broncos roster who has undergone an ACL operation after Justin Hodges, Tonie Carroll, Michael Ennis and Craig Frawley.

"He will do a fairly intense rehab program. He has had a pretty tough last couple of years with rep commitments so psychologically it will be a rest period for him, but he's got a different focus now," Dr Myers said.

"The best way is a good structured rehab, not aggressive rehab.

"A lot of players tend to concentrate on strength, it's more about control and balance and co-ordination of skills."

Meanwhile, Tate - who also had his season ended by a knee reconstruction - said Lockyer had kept in touch since also suffering a serious injury.

"He (Lockyer) called me every day the last couple of weeks, ringing for updates," Tate told Seven Network.

"I have been trying to be as positive as I can."
