Default Fittler & Roosters Sponsor Award

Fittler to sponsor award for league
AUSTRALIAN National Rugby League club Sydney City Roosters is sponsoring an award for the top Papua New Guinea schoolboys? league player each year to attend a pre-season training camp with the club.
To be known as the Brad Fittler Award, in recognition of their recently retired club, New South Wales and Australian captain, it will be bestowed on the best and fairest player of the national Under-17 selection trials in September This year?s trials will be held in Kimbe.
PNG Schoolboys chairman Iffysoe Segeyaro announced the finalization of the award yesterday following agreement between officials of the PNG Rugby Football League, Sydney City Roosters and himself.
Australian-based former Kumul player Jim Wilson was the main go-between in the discussions.
Segeyaro said the winner of the award would, following the trip to Australia, be eligible for selection in the PNG Under-18 team which would participate in the Australian Affiliated Leagues Championship next year.
This year?s championship is currently in progress in Townsville, where the best rugby league players the high school education system has produced are on show, in hope of impressing the litany of NRL scouts who are in attendance.
He expressed gratitude to the Sydney City Roosters, Brad Fittler and Wilson for providing the opportunity for young PNG talents to be exposed to top level rugby league and to build PNG?s player base.
?I am grateful that a club of high reputation and a world class player of Brad Fittler?s standing and respect have chosen to give this golden opportunity for our best and fairest player at each annual tournament to travel to Sydney and learn handy tips from some of NRL?s best footballers,? Segeyaro said.
?Fittler is a friend of PNG and I am pleased that the award is being named in his honor. The PNG schoolboys? league looks forward to utilising this scholarship for the good of the sport in the country.?
Fittler was equally delighted about the award arrangement. He said in an e-mail message to Segeyaro: ?It?s great that the Roosters are supporting this scholarship and I am honored to be associated with it.?
?There is a lot of great talent in PNG and I have always loved visiting there. The experience that this scholarship will bring to young players will be extremely beneficial and hopefully open the way for these kids to make their way into the NRL.
?It would be great to see a young player who has come through this program to one day play in the NRL.?

Great work from the Roosters and hopefully will help PNG football.
