CHAIRMAN of the QRL South East Queensland Division Brad Tallon launched the 2014 XXXX Brisbane Second Division season at a function in the Tap Room at the XXXX Brewery on Wednesday, March 5.

He congratulated the League on its achievements over many years and offered best wishes for the 2014 season.

In welcoming guests, the League Chairman, Mick Tierney, said that this is the 38th season of the Brisbane Second Division Rugby League.

It is the 23rd year of major sponsorship by Castlemaine Perkins XXXX, the 23rd year of associate sponsorship by Alpha Sport and the 10th year of associate sponsorship by Struddy’s Sports.

The Chairman thanked Castlemaine Perkins XXXX for again making the Tap Room at the Brewery available for the function, and said that this demonstrated the close relationship between the League and its major sponsor. He also thanked the two associate sponsors for their continued support.

Tierney said that in the 38 years of the competition there have been 2438 teams, 97,000 player registrations and about 17,500 individual players registered.

This year there are 78 teams from 45 clubs, involving over 3,000 players. There are also 14 womens teams taking part in the Brisbane and District Womens Rugby League. New or re-entering teams this year are the Bears, Beenleigh Bulls, Bowen River Broncos, Kingsridge and Eagleby. New womens teams include North Ipswich, Toowoomba and Pine Rivers.

This year there will be a three northside grades, four southside grades and an Under 20 grade.

There will be no Premier Grade this year.

All grades other than Southside 4 will begin on Saturday 8 March, with Southside 4 commencing on 15 March.

The League’s Open and Under 20 representative teams are scheduled to play Ipswich and Gold Coast in the XXXX Chairman’s Challenge in May.

Laurie Oberhardt was presented with life membership of the League after 35 years service on the executive of the League. He is only the eighth Life Member of the League in its 37 year history.
