The next generation of Gold Coast Titans are preparing to experience their first taste of international football this weekend.

Six Titans juniors have travelled to the United Kingdom with the New South Wales Country Rugby League Under-16s squad to take on England in a two match series.

The tour begins in earnest in the early hours on Monday morning when the side lines up against Leeds Rhinos in their only warm-up clash.


Exciting playmaking prospect Tom Weaver said the chance to test his and his teammates’ skills against England’s top footballers was an opportunity to savour.

“They’ll be very tough,” the 16-year-old said.


“They go through the middle a lot, run hard and tackle with aggression, so it’s going to be a pretty exciting experience.

“It’ll be pretty cold but you’ve got to get used to it while you’re over there.”

Defeating England would be a feather in the cap for the Junior Titans playmaker, who captained his Northern Rivers teammates to Andrew Johns Cup glory earlier in the year.

The Tweed halfback was awarded the Andrew Johns medal as the Under-16s regional NSW player of the year, which is one reason the Titans are so excited to have secured his signature with the Westfund Junior Titans System.


“He’s an up-and-coming halfback with good communication skills, quite crafty, and he’s a bit of a leader on the football field,” Junior Titans coach Jamie McCormack said.

“To head over to England and play three games at 16 years of age is an outstanding opportunity - not just from a personal perspective of seeing the world but also in rugby league.

“We’re pleased with Tom’s progression and over the coming years we hope he can develop into something special.”

McCormack said the rise of AJ Brimson through the same pathway to an Australian jersey made him a fine role model for the young halfback.

High-flying PBC winger Troy Duckett inspired his school to the second win of their Allan Langer Cup campaign with two spectacular aerial efforts to decide the match in the second half.

Duckett’s try and try assist for centre partner Reef Sommerville proved the difference in a 16-6 victory over St Mary’s College, Toowoomba.

Titans-contracted halfback Tom Weaver’s pinpoint kicking game brought out the best in Duckett’s aerial abilities to create points when nothing else went right.

Five-eighth Ryan Rivett opened the scoring in the 8th minute to lead 6-0 and St Mary’s could only muster a late try in consolation to fullback Keanu Wright-Dunrobin.

PBC head coach Brad Davis said although he was pleased with his side’s performance the Reds were still lacking cohesion ahead of next week’s grudge match with Keebra Park.

“Obviously we dominated possession but I think at times we left a few points out there,” Davis said.

“We had areas where we had St Mary’s on the back foot but we needed to be a bit more ruthless.

“We’re just searching for a bit more cohesion because things aren’t totally flowing for us at the moment.

“Tommy (Weaver) made some really good decisions and executed really well, as well as with Troy Duckett, who had a couple of really great leaps to get us some points.

“In tight games those moments and the players who can produce under that pressure are what the better players can do.”

Duckett’s first leap converted a hail Mary kick from his halfback into six points to hit the lead 12-0, three minutes into the second half.

Seven minutes later, Duckett jagged another lofted kick amid a swarm of St Mary’s defenders on the goal line.

The quick-thinking winger tossed a blind offload to centre Reef Sommerville, who powered through the remaining tacklers to hit 16-0 in the 40th minute.

St Mary’s battled back into the game and a piece of brilliance from five-eighth Blake Moore engineered the final try of the match.

A grubber kick split the defence for new hooker Thomas Hatch, who timed his pass to perfection for his fullback Wright-Dunrobin to score between the posts.

Gold Coast Titans young gun Tom Weaver has been banned from the road for six months and fined $900 after pleading guilty to high-range drink driving.

Weaver, 19, a product of the famed Palm Beach-Currumbin High rugby league nursery, joined the Titans this season and is seen as the club’s next playmaking talent.

But his career has suffered an early setback after he pleaded guilty in Southport Magistrates Court on Friday to driving with a blood alcohol concentration of .171 per cent.

The court heard that as a P-plater, he was meant to have no alcohol in his system.

Weaver was busted by police about 2.40am on Elkhorn Ave in Surfers Paradise on March 6 after they noticed he was stopped at green traffic lights with his hazard lights on.

Police observed he had bloodshot eyes and appeared to be under the influence which was confirmed by his reading, the court was told.

Weaver’s lawyer Russell Tannock told the court that his client had stalled at the intersection and there was no suggestion of any crash.

The lawyer said Weaver had co-operated with police, made full admissions and completed a traffic offenders course.

He said Weaver was a professional rugby league player in his first year with the Titans.

Weaver needed to drive to get to games, training and other club commitments and the loss of his licence would be ‘quite an imposition on him’, the lawyer said.

Magistrate Mark Howden acknowledged Weaver had already been off the road for three weeks but said he could not backdate the disqualification period.

He disqualified Weaver from driving for six months and convicted and fined him $900.

Weaver did not comment to media outside court.
