View Full Version : Australian World Cup train-on-squad
The World Cup is coming up and though it probably is going to be a one-way tounament there have been much talk about the origin teams which means it might be even harder to choose a Kangaroos Squad. Send Back and tell me who you think will be in this squad. Name 25 players. I know sometimes you don't know cuz you don't if someone is going to retire or who his going to be injured. Try your best! Thanks! :) :)
u got to admit that its weird that there are heaps of players who have played test but not origins like Maitua for example. Hoffman was 18th man for last years tri nations and in this years origin for NSW. :(
cmon someone im on my own here. Hello anybody there!! :hissyfit"

You realise the Cup is in 2008?
Are we predicting a team now for then?
It'll be a fantastic tournament, with a lot of nations fielding some pretty good teams.
We are pretty much half way through the NRL season already and it doesn't matter if it is in 2008. It is an interesting topic of discussion. Yes I know that you have know idea what is going to happen during now and then. Greg Inglis came to rep scene so quickly. Injuries may occurr but just ignore that and lets just see what people think. It's not like we're the Aussie selctors or something. It's all just fun and interesting.

I'm not trying to debunk the topic, anything but, I love international footy and world cup topics above all!
I'll come back with my prediction for a world cup squad! We will have a bit of a changing of the guard and a lot of players will be using WC08 as their swansong so it will be an interesting task!
it will be interesting to read your opinion. :)

I worded it wrong, what i had heard is he will be retiring from rep footy after this origin series, thus ruling him out for any future representiative football.
Farah should be in it for sure!! :woot:
Watmough deserved origin but not sure??
Thusrston, Lockyer, Buderus, Smith, Mason, Hindmarsh, Price, Hodges to name a few will be in the 25 man squad for sure. Only concern is Darren Lockyers injuries.

Yeah. Thanks Dakink forgot about Pricey, and I just have a feeling Clinton will have a big year in 08.
i wonder if Farah could secure a bench spot ahead of Buderus because Smith is more likely to get 9
I don't think Clinton will be in the side.

I think Cam Smith will be in the Kangaroos for a long time.
Definitely World Cup member aside from injury.
A definite starter at number 9 I think because as far as I am concerned Buderus is gone. But Farah could somehow overtake Smith from now to then. It's not impossible because Farah is a champion player and was extremely unlucky to miss out of origin this year. But Smith has displayed a lot of his talent in this years origin which is hard to top.

Yea we might have a S Walters v Elias situation in the future between Smith and Farah.

Injury fears as cup looms

RUGBY league's centenary year shapes as the toughest in history despite the NRL's promise to lighten the players' workload in the face of burnout.
COURIER MAIL
The World Cup at the end of next season will see the NRL provide up to 60 players to the 10 competing nations, making for a 10-month season with the final to be held at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium on November 22.
With 80 first-graders on the injured list this weekend ? 29 of them representative stars ? the issue of player burnout will be high on the agenda at today's NRL chief executives' meeting in Sydney.
Newcastle skipper Danny Buderus became the latest high-profile casualty yesterday when he succumbed to a knee injury that will sideline him for two weeks.
NRL chief executive David Gallop yesterday acknowledged the increasing demands on the players and promised some relief next year.
A second bye will be reintroduced and Monday Night Football will be scrapped before City-Country and the Trans-Tasman Test in May.
But the season will have to start a week earlier to accommodate the extra bye.
The "restructure" was achieved after discussions between NRL management and the game's television rights holder Channel 9 and FoxSports. The changes will give little relief to elite players, particularly those chosen for the World Cup, with NSW skipper Buderus indicating he wants to continue in representative football until at least the end of next year.
In addition to his knee problem, Buderus has been battling severe achilles tendinitis in both legs for three months and wears special braces in bed so he is able to walk when he gets up in the morning.
Even with the braces, he needs an hour to get mobile and he faces off-season surgery.
"There is just too much footy in a short space of time for the elite guys," he said.
"It's just too tough on the body. There are days when I feel like a 60-year-old."
Australia's 23-man squad for the 2008 World Cup will be selected entirely from the NRL, while New Zealand will also pick most of its players from the NRL despite looking to the English Super League.
The other nations to secure tournament berths are England, Papua New Guinea, France, Fiji and Tonga, with three spots yet to be filled. Tonga especially will look to the NRL for players.
North Queensland Cowboys CEO Peter Parr said the impact of injuries was magnified by the fact clubs did not have the depth of talent available in previous years because of the salary cap and advent of the Titans.
Andrew I wouldn't put Ennis or Toupu in. Zillman might be anything but maybe 08 is too soon, same with Mullen. Other than that it is a good looking team.
Also doubt they would pick Flannery or Berrigan if they are playing for English clubs, even though they are capable.
