Is anyone going to the eels vs storm game this weekend? I think diehard or dakink said they were going awhile back. If so, if it isnt too much trouble...could you get some photos? Too far for me to travel but if i could get some pics of the storm playing in the pre-season it would be VERY much appreciated.

MANLY 34 - 18 COMETS

4/02/2006

By Manly Sea Eagles

The Sea Eagles have had a good hit out against the Central QLD Comets in stifling conditions in Rockhampton.

The Sea Eagles started strongly scoring 2 tries in the opening 15 minutes, and rounded out the half with a 16-4 lead. The superior fitness of the Sea Eagles came into play during the second half as the peninsula boys ran out eventual winners 34-18.

Best for the Sea Eagles were Jim Curtis, Adam Cuthbertson, Mailangi Styles, George Rose and Travis Burns, with Rose best of the new comers. Powerhouse forward Sione Finefeuiaki was in good form with a 50 metre burst.

Todd Barrow was forced out of the match after sustaining a thigh injury during the warm up. Ashley Alberts and Clint Halden were also injured but all three players will be back in action for the remaining trials.

The match was a good hit out for the boys and sets a good platform for the upcoming trial against the Roosters / Newtown at Gosford in 2 weeks.

Sea Eagles: 34 Tries: JP Cherry 2, Mark Lennon, Jason Wells, Jim Curtis, Mailangi Styles. Goals: Travis Burns 4/4, Mark Lennon 1/2.
Comets: 18

Cronk fights for Storm halfback jersey

Saturday, February 11, 2006 - 8:39 PM

Cooper Cronk scored two tries in Melbourne's 38-18 victory over Parramatta in a trial match in Ballina, sending a clear message he wants to make the No.7 jersey his own.

Amid increasing speculation the Storm plan to recruit sacked Penrith skipper Craig Gower, Cronk was instrumental in guiding his team to a comprehensive seven tries to three win over the 2005 minor premiers.

The 22-year-old Cronk was initially slated to replace Manly key signing Matt Orford but there is renewed talk the Panthers will release Gower from his $2 million five-year contract, freeing the Test half to join the Storm.

Gower is reportedly disillusioned about issues relating to his punishment from the Panthers following an alcohol-fuelled weekend on the Sunshine Coast in December.

He was fined $30,000 and stripped of the captaincy.

Both the Eels and Melbourne fielded close to full-strength teams in balmy conditions at Ballina's Kingsford Smith Park.

Melbourne led 16-12 at halftime before Cronk's tries in the 45th and 54th minutes blew out his side's lead to 28-12 in a trial played over 20 minute quarters.

Former Queensland centre Chris Walker scored his first try for his new club in the 68th minute to hand the Storm a 34-12 lead.

Jarryd Hayne scored a consolation try for the Eels in the 72nd minute but Billy Slater completed the rout with his second try at the death.

Really good to see cronk play so good. There are some people out their eating some humble pie, sure its only a trial but some people dont even give cronk an ounce of a chance to fill orfords boots.

And the raiders beat warriors...good to see.

Canberra hold on - good fightback by NZ. From Foxsports.com.au:

Raiders curb Warriors comeback
From correspondents in Canberra
February 12, 2006

Warriors 16 Raiders 28
THE Canberra Raiders shook off a second-half comeback by the New Zealand Warriors in a wet pre-season NRL match in Auckland today.

The Raiders had a 22-0 lead early in the second half but three successive tries by the Warriors made it a contest before the visitors closed out the game of four 20-minute quarters.

A 30-metre grubber by Canberra rookie William Zillman gave David Milne the chance to claim the ball just inside the corner of the dead ball line had given the Raiders an apparently impregnable lead.

But the Warriors, lacklustre in the first half, came steaming back into the game.

Winger Todd Byrne scored from a relentless Warriors thrust which spanned the breadth of the field and fullback Tony Martin put one down in the corner soon after.

Then interchange player Cooper Vuna broke free for a 50-metre run in which he shook off three defenders and rolled over the line to bring up a 22-16 scoreline at three-quarter time.

Canberra regained the initiative after the short break when Adrian Purtell scored on the end of a long, questionable pass from the corner.

The Raiders had led 18-0 at half-time after a sluggish start.

The Warriors dominated much of the first quarter but failed to score through spilled balls and missed opportunities.

The Raiders began to find their feet and in the 18th minute a Marshall Chalk break on the wing found Canberra with the numbers to score through Lincoln Withers.

As heavy rain fell, the Raiders fullback put the visitors further ahead soon after the break when he threaded his way through the Warriors' defence to make it 12-0.

Canberra kept the ball in the Warriors' half for much of the quarter and inevitably scored again when Ryan Hinchcliffe barged his way across the line.

New Zealand Warriors 16 (T Byrne T Martin C Vuna tries T Martin 2 goals)
Canberra Raiders 28 (L Withers C Schifcofske R Hinchcliffe D Milne A Purtell tries, C Schifcofske 4 goals) in an NRL trial match at North Harbour Stadium.
