Titans media release:

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans & BCU ?saving? and developing junior sport together.

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans have firmly embraced the Coffs Harbour region and it?s many rugby league supporters, not only by choosing to play their first ever trial match against Melbourne Storm at BCU International Stadium on Saturday the 17th of February, but through an exciting new partnership with the local credit union, BCU which will benefit thousands of junior rugby league players across the region.

From today BCU will become the ?Official Community Banking sponsor of the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans?

Jetstar Gold Coast Titans Managing Director, Michael Searle believes the new partnership will drive home the club?s commitment to developing grass roots rugby league throughout their catchment area.

Searle said, ?BCU Chairman Gerry Regan, CEO Ray Battle and their team must be congratulated for this new and encouraging community initiative. On behalf of the entire team at the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans I am thrilled to see that grass roots junior rugby league players and their families now have an opportunity through the BCU Titans Community Saver Account to ensure rugby league across our catchment area continues to thrive and expand.?

?Our new partnership with BCU will ensure that these junior players and the administrators who run the code in the area will receive greater support and coaching from our dedicated coaching and development team. It?s through these school and community programs that the pathways will one day see a home grown Jetstar Gold Coast Titan run out to play in the National Rugby League,? said Searle.

The new partnership has the full support of Jetstar Gold Coast Titans Chairman Paul Broughton. Paul is a former First Grade rugby league player and coach, a former NSWRL administrator and is a strong supporter of junior development.

?I am excited to see that through the BCU Titans Community Saver Account, the credit union will be actively providing better resources and a brighter future for junior rugby league players from Port Macquarie through to the Gold Coast. Since day one we have committed to being a team which works with and for the community and the new BCU Titans junior development partnership will certainly allow us to continue this very important work,? said Broughton.

The new initiative will see BCU donate significant monies back to the community, based on the savings of members and supporters with BCU. The donations will initially be used to fund the BCU Titans Junior Development Squad with plans for a community fund to be established by the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans.

The Jetstar Titans are the first club in Australia to benefit from BCU?s Community Saver accounts.

In recognition of the support being shown by BCU, the Junior Development Squad will in future become ?The BCU Titans Junior Development Squad.?

BCU has based the new account on an extremely successful model used internationally, and is looking forward to seeing the region reap the rewards of the new partnership.

? It changes the whole way we do sponsorship, over the past 36 years we?ve contributed many millions back to the community but now we?ve handed the decision making back to individuals and they now decide where they want the money to go.?

?Our level of support will be based on how much individual members in that community support BCU through savings. We see that this will enable us in future to give back even more than we have in the past to grow local communities, whether it be sporting teams, art groups, surf life saving, schools,? said Battle.

A new comer to the Gold Coast with a branch at Bundall established last year, BCU has a long history and is seen as a leader in the credit union industry. Today BCU has 21 branches from Port Macquarie in NSW to Bundall in Queensland and has many members Australia wide.

As a community credit union BCU have no external shareholders, everyone who does their banking with BCU is an equal owner, so they have almost 60,000 owners (families and business) - almost all in the same geographic footprint as that encompassed by the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans.

I was very impressed with the BCU's involvement with junior development when reading the brochures at the Coffs and Lismore trials.

Surprised there isn't more discussion on this topic.
