Sharks in hunt for Lam
By James Hooper
October 28, 2005

FORMER Queensland Origin halfback Adrian Lam has been offered the role of assistant coach at Cronulla Sharks next season.

The approach came yesterday from Cronulla chief executive Steve Rogers, who has tabled Lam a two-year offer.

Lam will inform the Sharks of his decision today, with his manager Sam Ayoub last night suggesting the retired Maroons star was split on the decision.

A former Sydney Roosters prize halfback, Lam played under current Cronulla coach Stuart Raper at Wigan in the English Super League.

The offer has come about after Sharks assistant coach Peter Gentle accepted an offer to join the lower grades at premiers Wests Tigers next season.

"Adrian has come highly recommended, there are numerous people who speak highly of him in the coaching ranks," Rogers said.

"Stuart trusts him because he worked with him at Wigan, in fact he rates Adrian as one of the smartest football brains in the business."

Lam starred for Wigan in the English Super League after joining the club in 2001 before accepting a coaching role this season.

In control of the Wigan under-21 squad, Lam took the outfit to the grand final before being upstaged in the final three minutes by an intercept pass.

Adrian sees the possible move to Cronulla as a great opportunity but he's not sure whether he wants to take it or not at this stage," Ayoub said.

One of Queenslands favourite PNG Rugby League stars (yes there is a bit of tounge in cheek in that post ;) ) is heading back to the NRL to take up a position with the Sharks.

Sharks seem to be building a decent support staff for their players. Now they need some players.

Sharks close to signing Lam

CRONULLA Sharks CEO Steve Rogers said the chances of Adrian Lam joining the NRL side are "looking positive", but faces an anxious wait for the signature of the former Queensland Origin halfback.

The Sharks have offered Lam a two-year deal to entice him to the Shire, but won't get "absolute confirmation" until he gets a release from his coaching commitments from Super League side Wigan.

Lam is understood to be on a handshake deal to coach Wigan's under-21 squad and will not join the Sharks unless he has the blessing of Warriors boss Maurice Lindsay.

"Things are looking positive but we haven't had absolute confirmation," Sharks CEO Steve Rogers said today.

"At this stage it's more that he has to resolve some issues in the UK.

"Once he's had those discussion with Maurice Lindsay and he's comfortable with what he's doing hopefully we'll get the decision we're looking for.

"All I can say at this stage is things are looking positive."

The Sharks, who are looking for a replacement after assistant coach Peter Gentle joined premiers Wests Tigers' coaching staff, were hoping for a final answer today but may be forced to wait until Lam and Lindsay resolve the issue at their end.

Rogers said the retired Maroons star impressed Sharks coach Stuart Raper with his football brain as a player when the two were at Wigan in the English Super League.

"Stuart coached him and Stuart rates him very highly, so tactically he is very astute," Rogers said.

"Since he's moved into the coaching ranks he's been very highly regarded, both over there and over here.

"There's some other clubs over here interested in gaining his services at some stage in the future, with the Roosters the most prominent."

I'd love to see it, but I don't see it happening with the internal problems we've got right now. :(

Sharks sign Lam

FORMER Queensland Origin halfback Adrian Lam has accepted the role of assistant coach at the Cronulla Sharks for next season.

Lam today signed a two-year deal with the Shire club, reuniting him with head coach Stuart Raper, who previously coached him at Wigan in the English Super League.

Lam, who played 14 State of Origin matches and 21 Tests for Papua New Guinea, replaces Peter Gentle, who has joined Wests Tigers' coaching staff.

The Sharks today also announced the signing of former South Sydney utility Brett Kearney for next season.
