2007 KIWIS INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME STARTS TO TAKE SHAPE

Following on from discussions initiated in during the 2006 Tri-Nations, ARL CEO Geoff Carr contacted NZRL Acting Chairman Andrew Chalmers this week to confirm Suncorp Stadium as the venue for this fixture.

Chalmers indicated that he is, "very happy with this decision as it delivers the best possible commercial outcome for both countries."

Strong Brisbane crowds at both the 2006 ANZAC test and during the Tri-Nations lead Chalmers to push for Suncorp as NZRL's favoured option during the discussions.

Initial concerns expressed by the ARL were over the implications for two State of Origin games in to be played in Brisbane next year, "but in the end, our Australian counterparts saw that this option made the most sense financially," says Chalmers.

"We are very excited not only at the prospect of the match itself, but also by the willingness of the Australians to work closely with us on such important business decisions."

Chalmers stressed the importance of the international programme to NZRL reiterating that, "the Kiwis is the only part of our operation that generates financial surpluses so it is critical that these deals are sound if we are to continue to invest in the game at all levels."

Similar discussions with the RFL are already well advanced in relation to the centenary tour to England in late 2007.

"Our British colleagues are also showing a willingness to work closely with us to ensure win-win outcomes," says Chalmers.

"We are all excited at the prospect of a full 2007 calendar but we must make sure the decisions taken now, maximise our chances of success both on and off field."

Better start planning for the Anzac Test if it truly is gonna be in Brissie!

Im glad that Brissy gets to keep the game for another year; however I always thought that moving this game to Perth had its merits.

Yea it did. This will be another opportunity to stick it up Sydney.

Brisbane retaining this fixture is a just reward for the continual support that Queenslanders give to International Rugby League :D

While I'd like to see Canberra have a Test, the days are gone of hosting major Test Matches in Newcastle and Canberra. (Especially when there will only be ONE Australian based match next year, a terrible blunder in the year leading up to the World Cup)

I can see Canberra coming into the frame for the World Cup, along with Townsville, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Central Coast, Woolongong etc. We need to develop some depth at Test level, fixture wise so we can bring top events to these fantastic areas.

I think we should be pushing an Emus/Aussie A or Aboriginal All-Stars tour team.

I think they need to expand Canberra Stadium a bit, DIEHARD.

Use the Brumbies as an excuse (they get heaps good crowds), then host a Test or something there, and suddenly Canberra is League country again!

Brisbane hosts Kiwi Test

January 07, 2007

BRISBANE'S Suncorp Stadium will host the one-off trans-Tasman rugby league Test in April.

Sports Minister Andrew Fraser said that at this stage the April 20 Test will be the only time the Tri-Nations champion will play New Zealand on home soil this year.

Fraser said Suncorp Stadium had advanced its claims for the Test following the disappointing crowd for the Tri-Nations final against New Zealand at Sydney's Aussie Stadium in November.

About 28,000 turned out to watch Australia win 16-12 in double-extra time.

Suncorp Stadium has a capacity of 52,500 and a Test last year attracted 44,000.

Meanwhile, Fraser said Suncorp Stadium has also attracted a Bulldogs v Cowboys NRL match this season.

The Bulldogs will move their Round 11 home game from Sydney to Brisbane.

Bulldogs chief executive Malcolm Noad said the opportunity to play the north Queensland side in Brisbane was "too good to pass up".

"We have a strong supporter base in south-east Queensland and we are pleased to give them another chance to see their favourite players in action," he said.

IMO this will be Brisbane's last chance to impress on the international stage before the world cup. Suncorp needs to be full to the rafters if Brisbane has any chance of holding the World Cup Final.

As if there are any other contenders for the World Cup Final.

Great news for Cowboys fans in SEQLD including a few of my friends. They have a big fanbase.

This will be a very interesting experiment crowd wise!

It's great news Diehard. It's been rumoured for a while on the Doggies forum and it's good to see they were right. We've got 3 games down here this year - they'll have to start issuing season if we get any more down here.

I think it's more a dollars thing than just trying to keep the Doggies SEQ supporters happy. They stand to make alot more at Suncorp Stadium with a likely crowd of 30,000 + than they'd get if they played the same game in Sydney.

There are already plenty in North Qld & Sydney planning a road trip for the Origin game and this game plus the Titans & Broncos are both at home that weekend as well. I guess we'll have Origin on Wednesday plus games on Friday, Saturday & Sunday. An awesome week for league in Qld.
