NORTH Queensland fullback Matt Bowen says he'd love to "have a crack" at American football.

Bowen, named National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Male Sportsperson of the Year last night, made the admission in after he was asked by a fan what he thought of the sport.

"I think it's all right," Bowen said.

"I don't mind watching it when it's on pay TV. I did know there was a team in Townsville because when we did a movie premiere for Friday Night Lights,&nbspthe team was there.

"I wouldn't mind having a crack at it one day."

Bowen, who will be one of the North Queensland dangermen when the Cowboys play minor premier Parramatta in the NRL preliminary final at Telstra Stadium on Sunday, is one of the smallest players in the NRL.

Indeed, at 175cm and 78kg, former US high-school gridiron star Ian Blake, currently playing rugby league with the Brisbane Broncos feeder club, Toowoomba in the Queensland Cup, said Bowen would be too small to make a switch to American football.

"Obviously he's very athletic but he'd have to put on quite a bit of weight to be an every down player," the Texan said.

"Maybe he could be a punt returner in special teams."

Punt return seems about perfect for the little guy!

Tear em to peices then watch the walking fridges beat crap out of each other!

With helmets of course!

Yeah i was reading this earlier today. Its been blown way out of proportion from the media. I dont recall Bowen saying that he WANTED to go over and play. He was asked if he would play it, thus(as you guys have read) he said he wouldnt mind giving it a go.

I doubt he has any intentions of doing this.

All in all, yes way too small. Most Running backs/Wide Recievers are all over the 105kg Bracket.

Weigh in around 190kg Plus, i dont think matty would stand a chance. Lol

Bowen would get his butt kicked when tackled. Defense players are absolutely huge. 140kg+

Matty Bowen, whilst he has the dazzling footwork, is too small in frame to even be given a second thought by NFL scouts.

The NFL RB can be anywhere between 5"9 (Priest Holmes from KC and weighing 205 pounds) to 6"3 (a former Titan great in Eddie George tipping the scales at 230 pounds ) though going below 5"9 is rare. Hell, Jerome Bettis the Pittsburgh RB and future Hall Of Famer is (5"10 and 250 pounds) a monster and appropriately nicknamed "The Bus".

The Chargers have the electric NCAA RB in 2005/06 rookie Darren Sproles who comes in at 5"7, though he will be used as a special teamer returning kicks and get some spot duty down the stretch.

Ringing wet, Matty Bowen is 80kg (approximately what, 160 pounds for arguments sake?) and too small to strap on the pads and helmet.

We don't want to lose him from the NRL anyway ;)
