Four amateur rugby league coaches from Leeds spent a week in Germany during the half term holiday to help boost the game of Rugby League on the Continent.

The four coaches work with Leeds Rhinos scholarship scheme and are drawn from amateur clubs across the City to develop their coaching skills with the Super League club. They work on a voluntary basis and agreed to take time out of their own holiday time to travel to Rheindahlen in Germany.

The trip was organised by the Rhinos Head of Youth Performance John Bastian through a contact in the RAF Police.

Commenting on the trip Bastian said, ?The four coaches were a credit to the Rhinos and the city of Leeds. They took time off work to be unpaid
volunteers for the trip but they were a real hit with the children on the camp.

Many of the kids fathers are currently away in Afghanistan and Iraq and as you can imagine it is a tough environment to grow up in. Our coaches worked with 45 youngsters for five days doing a variety of activities such as skills drills, small sided games and practising technique.?

The four coaches were Sammy Horner from West Leeds ARL, Peter Clarkson from East Leeds ARL and Steve Templeton from Hunslet Warriors ARL with Phil Tate leading the trip as Head Coach, he is also assistant coach to the Rhinos U18 side.

Bastian added, ?The whole week was a big success and we are delighted we could help out the armed forces in Germany. The team were presented with a special Officers Mess plaque by the commanding officer and hopefully it will be the start of a long standing partnership.?

Now this is the sort of rugby league development I love to see from the premier clubs. Hope to see more in the future, if they all pitch in the combined effort will be tremendous.

Yea all NRL clubs should pick a region or club or nation in the pacific or asia area and take it under its wing.

Titans should take PNG or Fiji. :naughty:
