Fitting in with the Titans theme, they've gotta call it the Colosseum!

We can make this a feared place to visit for other teams.

Colosseum would be a great name, but I can't see the club, or should I say the landlords, the state government knocking back a stadium sponsorship deal to help recoup some dollars.

Colosseum or Arena are great names.

Maybe they could call it SPONSOR arena.

Or is the name arena too related to smaller or indoor venues? Such as Vodaphone Arena in Melbourne for tennis.

Picture it now...

Gold Coast Titans vs Brisbane Broncos at The Colosseum, Robina QLD.

How could we have anything else?

"The Colosseum, home of the Gold Coast Titans where blood, sweat and tears will be spilt from 2007..."

Love it!

Nothing stopping the stadium having two names, Look at the Sharks, Toyota park to some, Shark park to others.

All though I do agree with the Sponsor stadium/arena. As long as robina Town center dont get a name in there. I couldnt imagine telling me mates Im heading down to "Robina Town Center Satdium" :)

Yes it's most likely a sponser will jump on board, which is both good and bad. good for the team and for the finacial support, but it does sound very commercial instead of teambased.

but something such as the Vodafone Coliseum instead of Vodafone Stadium might be a fair comprimise between both worlds? Of course, i'm just guessing the sponser lol.

I don't mean to put a damper on the name Colosseum, but we do realize it's in Rome, Italy, and the Titans were Greek Elder Gods before the Olympians and had absolutely nothing to do with gladiatorial combat, Christians, lions or tigers.
But then again, why should fact get in the way of a really cool name.

To at least stay within the right culture, one should at least look at something to do with Greece.

From the Spartans history, what about 'HELL'S GATE'
To much?

With reference to the Olympics, I think a great name would be 'THE ARENA'.

bigjim
21-08-07, 11:06 AM
Another great name might be 'THE COLOSSUS'

It's Greek.

The original Colossus of Rhodes was a giant statue and one of the 'Seven Wonders of the Ancient World'.

The fact it was a statue is not relative.

The Colossus was more than a statue, it was a symbol of power, success, strength and unity.

All I can come up with is THE ATLAS

Atlas was the son of Iapetus. Unlike his brothers Prometheus and Epimetheus, Atlas fought with the other Titans supporting Cronus against Zeus. Due to Cronus's advance age Atlas lead the Titan's in battle. As a result he was singled out by Zeus for a special punishment and made to hold up the world on his back. The new stadium will hold the the weight of the NRL world for the Gold Coast.

I would rather "The Arena"

Have metal gates covering the players entrance, that rise as the players are about to come out.

Then all the dancers come running out, with a bit of "Joker thief and the night" Starting.

2 Loud explosions, and then a string of fire streching the length of the tunnel

Then the players come charging out.

I love it!!

So you want it to be like what the Canterbury Crusaders do at their home ground in the super 14. They have that castle front with fire flames and stuff and then the draw bridge opens and a knight on a horse rides out and then the players run out and the fireworks goes off. I agree it would be good if some team in the NRL like the Titans had something like that. It looks good and makes the atmosphere better

very creative.... i do like it.....only i cant seperate small from arena in my head.... to me an arena is small and a stadium is large.....

then theres >wiki< (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arena)

"An arena is an enclosed area, often circular or oval-shaped, designed to showcase theater, musical performances, or sporting events."

bigjim
23-08-07, 02:08 PM
Arenas are not necessarily small.

The Ancient Olympics were held in arenas, some much larger than the Roman Colosseum.

For my money, THE ARENA gets the vote.

It's not corny and it fits with the overall Titan theme.

nice vid coaster...got me pumped

To me 'Arena' seems to cunjure a feeling of size just as much if not more than 'stadium'

As in "across the other side of the outdoor Arena"
as opposed to "inside the stadium"

An arena is a circular or oval shaped public space. It is composed of a large open space surrounded on all sides by raised, usually tiered, seats or benches for spectators. The key feature of an arena is that the event space is the lowest point, allowing for maximum visibility

Sounds like skilled park is an ARENA

Skilled wins Robina Stadium naming rights

The future home ground of the Gold Coast Titans at Robina will be called Skilled Park after the workforce group secured naming rights to the NRL stadium until 2013.

The NRL club will play its home games at Carrara Stadium next year before moving to its new $160 million, 25,000-seat stadium being constructed at Robina.

The company also holds the naming rights to Skilled Stadium in Victoria - the home ground of AFL club Geelong.

Looks like your theme was taken on board........have you checked out Titans TV of late.....

Haha, thats good, just watched it.

Wish they had done that before i did my video, i could have used all that footage.

The Arena or Colliseum are too generic for my taste, every second facility is the this or that arena, and both only have the loosest of associations to the team name.

I went pretentious with my last suggestion, but I was only half serious. I was watching a TV show and the characters referred to a football stadium by a nickname derived from the corporate sponsor of said stadium. I thought, there's no history here yet, so unlike Lang Park it wouldn't be so tacky to take that route.

Skilled Park is the name, so I thought maybe...

"The sKill-Zone"

My favourite, "The Skillet"

Some not so good ones on the same theme

"The Skill-or-be-Skilled"

"The Skill-on-Site"

"The-Skiller-is-inside-the-House"

"The Skiller in me is the Skiller in you"

"Natural Born Skiller"

Anyone else think of any? My ideas are getting a bit abstract and patently anti-social.

I'll be calling it the Skillet, I like the way it rolls off the tongue, and "Skill-or-be-Skilled" is growing on me.

**bump**

Just thought it might be worth reviving this thread, only a week away from the opening round and all.

We all know it is Skilled Park, but it probably won't always be Skilled Park. I'd like to see us, the fans, choose a name before some TV buffoon like Gus gives it some crap name that sticks.

So far it looks like the more serious contenders are The Colloseum and Robina Arena. Anyone got any more?

How about one of the Mods sets up a vote, and we just go with the winner?

the ribcage? (looks like a ribcage)

The Colloseum

Robina Arena/The Arena?

when a name is decided on.....it would be cool to do a banner like

"Welcome To The Colloseum/RibCage/Arena

would be pretty cool...... butyea us fans need to find a name before someone else does......

I was wondering why the paper spelt it so oddly (ive only ever refered to it as the 'Colosseum', so I did a little research....

The Colosseum's original Latin name was Amphitheatrum Flavium, often anglicized as Flavian Amphitheater... Vespasian and Titus, builders of the Colosseum...By the year 1000 the name "Colosseum" (a neuter noun) had been coined to refer to the amphitheatre....The name was further corrupted to Coliseum during the Middle Ages. In Italy, the amphitheatre is still known as il Colosseo.

I kinda like the italian way....'IL COLOSSEO'
'il Colosseo, sede del Titanius - The Colosseum, home of the Titans'
.... or when Im pissed 'Titanium Flavium'

OK, with reference to the *edit* who has tried to bring some "Temple Of Boom" to our Colloseum, has anyone on here ever watched the Ultimate Fighter? I am a big fan of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and especially love all the cage fight series (UFC, KOTC, etc). This stuff is the ultimate version of the modern day Gladiators.

Anyway, the Ultimate Fighter series has a theme song which is hardcore, edgy and gets you pumped for some serious pain and suffering!

It goes like this,

BOOM, you're gonna get hit
you're gonna get knocked out
you're gonna feel it
this is the ultimate

there is no substitute
for the ultimate is what's in store
bear witness to the fitness of the modern warrior
the knockout that you see is ultimate reality
because one man is left standing
won't succumb to gravity

BOOM, you're gonna get hit
you're gonna get knocked out
you're gonna feel it
this is the ultimate

Anyway, I wonder if this is where they got the idea from.

ps, It is the "Colloseum!" Please refer to it as such. ;)

If we were the Gladiators then i would agree that the Colluseum would be a great name, but Titans were Giant Warrior like Gods of Greek Mythology (You no, Atlas, the dude with the world on his shoulders, he was a Titan) who predated the Gods of Olympia. The Titans Temple is a perfect fit if you actually think about it.

so it doesnt have to make any sense at all?

Titans and Gladiators are not similar in any respect, one is a God from Greek Mythology and the other is a Roman warrior who kills stuff.

Its not about prayer, its about worship, which is pretty much what fans are....worshippers of the team and players. I see the Titans players as mighty warriors who are sent forth by the Gods to do battle.

Relevance is important. Otherwise we are just making stuff up to suit inaccurate beliefs.

It would be like calling manly's home ground the Lions Den. It makes no sense.

We all understand what a Titan is in mythology. And that a gladiator is of roman origin although they mostly came from all over the empire.

I think people shouldn't take the Titans too literally, we obviously arent exactly the Greek Titans, I believe we are closer to a more generalistic definition. Possibly a 2nd and new generation of Titans reincarnated in the form of warriors. Human beings of such skill and daring that they rival the original Titans.

More following and living up to the accolades of the Titans of the past. With characteristics of courage, might, prowess, valor and stature.

The Titans mocker was never meant to be literal, but more what we choose it to be. To take in our own direction.

Fact of the matter is the interpretation of what our Titans really rests with the original bid team. And to them it meant a gladiator-like warrior.

Let's reflect on this press release announcing our club's name back in 2005 and you might see where we are all coming from.

IT'S TITANS!

One of the biggest questions on the lips of NRL fans around the country has been answered with the announcement of the new Gold Coast NRL team name - TITANS.

NRL CEO David Gallop headlined the dignitaries when the city's business leaders and thousands of Rugby League fans witnessed the slick unveiling at Robina Town Centre tonight which combined a high impact video clip, special effect lighting, music and pyrotechnics.

Titans Managing Director Michael Searle said of the new name, "It's a winner and so is the process we used to get us this result. It has been arguably the most exhaustive and transparent naming process in the history of Australian sport. The thing I like about it most is that it has been inclusive in the involvement of the community every step of the way."

NRL CEO David Gallop said, "It's an important milestone for the Gold Coast and I'm sure that the Titans name will become a catch-cry for thousands of fans. The efforts made by the club have already impressed a lot of people in the game and I think 2007 will seem to come around very quickly indeed"

NRL's Director of Commercial and Marketing Paul Kind said "The Titans logo is a new and impressive design and I think it will inspire a lot of fans. It represents a fresh marketing approach and a real opportunity for the club"

‘TITANS' was the overwhelming winner being the most popular name chosen from a poll conducted on the NRL Website in early August asking rugby league fans to decide between STINGERS, PIRATES and TITANS. Out of the 49,224 votes cast, TITANS polled 45% in front of PIRATES 29% and STINGERS at 26%.

The three finalists were the most popular choice of fans who visited The Gold Coast NRL website to vote on the final ten names. There was also a wildcard entry available in addition to the top 10. The Top Ten came from more than 300 names and thousands of emails and letters submitted to Gold Coast NRL through its Website, mail and various media polls.

General Manager of Marketing and Commercial Stephen Burns was charged with the naming project and believes the effect on the general public will be instant. "There is no question when you have a majority winner like TITANS in a poll situation - the acceptance is going to be high. Predominantly that has come about because ‘TITANS' is such a strong name to begin with."

The strength of the name is the foundation from which a strong branding campaign will be built representing the qualities that the team should possess.

Burns said, "Essentially a Titan is an ‘imaginary being' so we have the opportunity of making it whatever we want it to be. We will explore the characterisation of the Titan through the size and strength of a Mythological Gladiator - super hero type. This is just the first step in what will be a long journey for the branding of the ‘Titans'.

The logo is inspired by the spirit of the modern day TITAN. Simple clean
lines - modern but striking - are reflected in the TITAN logo. Use of an international trend of colour blocking, graded effects and simplistic modern silhouettes gives it a cutting edge feel.

The colours encompass the heritage of the Gold Coast with use of sea (blue) sun (yellow) and sand (fawn) as well as bronze for the armour, grey for the steel swords and black represents a rock solid foundation and strength.

The combination of the two swords positioned behind the name and the helmet and armour add a disposition of strength to the logo.

Burns said, "We wanted to ensure the colours represented the Gold Coast and that the logo, when lined up against the other 15 clubs in the NRL, is worthy of inclusion amongst what are some of the best and most successful brands in Australian sport."

TITANS Chairman Paul Broughton believes the name is a great fit and reflective of the Gold Coast and what it stands for. "The day of naming is one of the most important in a club's history. There's no doubt the TITANS is a great name and will live up to it's importance in this chapter of history. Who could argue with the overwhelming majority of people who voted for it. The look and feel of the logo compliments the name which represents a position of strength."

The Gold Coast Titans were excited to announce its first significant sponsorship and supply agreement at the naming launch this evening.

Reebok will be the Titans' brand of choice for on-field playing gear and the authentic range of team apparel.

Stephen Burns said "It's exciting to launch our sponsorship and supply campaign with one of the world's biggest names in sport. It adds a professional dimension to what we are trying to achieve with the on field look. There are also ancillary benefits of being linked with Reebok including strong retail channels which will result in high sales volumes and wide distribution of our merchandise - making it accessible for the fans."

Reebok is the world leader in on-field apparel, currently supplying the NFL, NBA and NHL in the US, as well as leading Premier League Football teams such as Liverpool in the UK. With vast local experience in providing for teams such as the Melbourne Storm, Fremantle Dockers and all 8 A League sides, Reebok were the obvious choice for the Titans.

Reebok Director Michael Hendler said, "Reebok is intent on holding its position as the leader in professional sports apparel, both locally and internationally. We are thrilled to be associated with the launch of the Gold Coast Titans and we have no doubt that the team will perform at the highest level in the latest Reebok technology."

Titans merchandise is currently in the first phase of design and production with a limited range of apparel, expected to be released in time for Christmas.

Originally capable of seating around 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles.

So you can certainly see why fans make the connection between the two.

Yes, i see now why the connection has been made, but i still believe that the colluseum does not have any relevance to the Titans. The Titans definition has been manufactured / altered as such to 'fit'.

But the beauty of Australia is that we can all have an opinion.

I like the Temple.

No worries mate, but you understand that Cronulla's ground is called Shark Park, but Sharks can't actually survive on the land. Ridiculous hey! And seriously, how could Sharks pass with fins? Don't get me started on their kicking game..... ;)

I agree, the last thing we want is to attract some suicide bomber screaming "Blasphemy!"

'The cage' is a good one, but I still like 'The Colosseum'

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned here before, but the construction of The Colosseum was completed under the Roman Emperor 'Titus' ;)

Titans and Gladiators are not similar in any respect, one is a God from Greek Mythology and the other is a Roman warrior who kills stuff.

.

Titans aren't gods, they were non divine terrestrial beings who were punished and banished often because they were seen as a serious threat to the gods. Which is pretty ****ing badass, just like our team is at the moment.

I've said before that I'm not a fan of equating ancient Roman culture with the Titans (and I'm Italian), but these guys seem pretty attached so i try not to bring it up TOO often.

Also, gladiatiors generally aren't team players, while the team is really the epitome of that right now. They're a Phalanx of Hoplites, made Titanic through their Teamwork!

Am I right fellas?

Even though the movie '300' is a little lowest common denominator and a little not interested in actual history and by all reports is developing the same kind of 'miss the point' fanbase Fight Club did, the story is Greek and it's about teamwork and kinda sorta actually happened. So I'm gonna start calling Skilled The Hot Gates or Thermopylae, as well as whichever of the other 17 alternatives to Colloseum I've suggested takes my fancy at any given moment. They held out against all kinds of attacks, again and again, because they played as a team, and I bet they were taller than average. :D

A Titan by definition - the Titans (Greek: Τῑτάν Tītā́n; plural: Τῑτᾶνες Tīt?nes) were a race of powerful deities that ruled during the legendary Golden Age

deity is a postulated preternatural or supernatural being, who is always of significant power, worshipped, thought holy, divine, or sacred, held in high regard, or respected by human beings.
Deities assume a variety of forms, but are frequently depicted as having human or animal form. Some faiths and traditions consider it blasphemous to imagine or depict the deity as having any concrete form. They are usually immortal. They are commonly assumed to have personalities and to possess consciousness, intellects, desires, and emotions similar to those of humans. Such natural phenomena as lightning, floods, storms, other 'acts of God', and miracles are attributed to them, and they may be thought to be the authorities or controllers of every aspect of human life (such as birth or the afterlife). Some deities are asserted to be the directors of time and fate itself, to be the givers of human law and morality, to be the ultimate judges of human worth and behavior, and to be the designers and creators of the Earth or the universe.

Ok, they used to be gods. Bloody Greeks and their loose definitions of deity.

I understand that nobody cares about the origin of Titans or its relevance and that the Colluseum is the choice of 'the people'.

I however will continue to visit the Titans Temple where i will loudly and proudly pay my respects to our mighty team of immortals as they visit destruction upon our mortal enemies from the north.

enjoy the game.:D

I think the Golden Age they are referring to is the Centenary of Rugby League, where the mighty TITANS ruled in the year of 2008.

So we are all agreed Bull Bailey is indeed a God? :D

Nice work Traveller. Now please let us all get back to being ill-informed mythological historians, but worthy Titans fans who just like to cheer on their team at the Colloseum! ;)

Spot-on Whiz ;)

As for Rogers, shall we send him to a confessional with 'Rev. Searle' at the 'Temple',
or
order him to a defensive session with 'The Axe' at 'The Colosseum' or 'The Cage'
