In 2007 the NRL welcomes their 16th member club when the Gold Coast Titans (formerly Giants, Seagulls, Chargers and for a short time ? Dolphins) join the competition. Armed with a completely vacant roster and an uncompromised Salary Cap, the Titans have been extremely aggressive in building a side that can compete from day one. Coach John Cartwright and the Gold Coast management deserve a lot of credit for luring some very good players to the club. In doing so they have transferred a lot of pressure onto their own shoulders for the next two seasons as the playing roster is a lot stronger than say South Sydney had in 2002.

Make no mistake with the talent at the club already, this new Gold Coast side should be competitive and although one would wisely stop before labeling them genuine Finals contenders, they will certainly be amongst the media?s pre-season darlings in 2007.

They have class in two key positions with international prop Luke Bailey and at halfback with 2005 Clive Churchill Medalist Scott Prince, while the supporting cast features quality players like winger Brian Carney, five-eighth Preston Campbell and back rowers Anthony Laffranchi and Bradley Meyers.

The addition of Cronulla prop James Stosic fills the roster with their 22nd player with NRL (or ESL) experience and to round out the depth at the club they will draw heavily on their Queensland Cup affiliates ? the Burleigh Bears, Tweed Heads Seagulls and Ipswich Jets.

Gold Coast Titans Depth Chart 2007

Props: Luke Bailey (St George-Illawarra), Frank Puletua (Penrith), James Stosic (Sharks), Michael Henderson (St George-Illawarra).

Backrowers: Anthony Laffranchi (Wests Tigers), Bradley Meyers (Bradford), Michael Hodgson (Canberra), Mark Minichiello (South Sydney), Gavin Cooper (North Queensland), Luke Swain (Penrith), Luke O'Dwyer (Parramatta).

Hookers: Nathan Friend (Melbourne), Clint Amos (North Queensland).

Halves: Scott Prince (Wests Tigers), Preston Campbell (Penrith).

Three-quarters: Brian Carney (Newcastle), Jake Webster (Melbourne), Brett Delaney (Parramatta), Matt Petersen (Parramatta), Josh Graham (Western Force, rugby union).

Fullbacks: Steve Turner (Melbourne), Richie Mathers (Leeds).

With technically three more spots in their Top 25 to be filled, another half/five-eighth, a three quarter and a prop look to be on the shopping list. A young backup playmaker certainly looks imperative as injury to either Prince or Campbell would be catastrophic for the team.

With that squad in mind here is the best 17 the Titans can put on the park next season.

Why did they say completely vacant roster, then say 22 signings? Anyway, it's interesting to see them put Delaney out on the wing. Has he had any experience there?

They were stating the position that they faced once they realised they had been admitted into the comp.

Exactly... I could say the same thing about my side... but I'm not one J Cartwright and therefore I won't.. only he knows the side for 2007 and I bet you he has quite a few combos to look at for 2007, it will all depend of preseason training... :)

well peoples look at the form of the people and there prefered positions.

1. Richie Mathers (best fullback in England)
2. Stev turner (better than matt peterson)
3. Brett Delaney (goalkicking center and better than Gavin Cooper)
4. Jake Webster (Marquee signing)
5. Brian carney (best winger in Britain)
6. Preston Campbell (Dally M winner)
7. Scott Prince (Premiership winning captain)
8. Luke bailey (international forward)
9. Nathan Friend (better than clint amos
10. James Stosic/Michael Henderson (both good strong forwards)
11. Anthony Laffranchi (premiership winning forward and international)
12. Brad Meyers (former aus international)
13. Gavin Cooper (best lock)

Intercahnge
14. Clint Amos (can play several positions)
15. Mark Minicello (underated forward)
16. Michael Henderson/ James Stosic (stated above)
17. Luke Swain (big strong player)

That's why i think mine is probably the most accurate

My value of the current 22 man squad:
Bailey: $230,000
Puletua: $150,000
Stosic: $100,000
Henderson: $200,000
Laffranchi: $175,000
Meyers: $200,000
Hodgson: $120,000
Minichello: $120,000
Cooper: $100,000
Swain: $130,000
O?Dwyer: $110,000
Friend: $125,000
Amos: $100,000
Prince: $350,000
Campbell: $200,000
Carney: $185,000
Webster: $175,000
Delaney: $110,000
Petersen: $140,000
Graham: $100,000
Turner: $130,000
Mathers: $220,000
All together the total spent on the 22 players is: $3,470,000
NB: Every players value in $ is per year.

I think the Titans could afford one more star player such as Nate Myles (who IMO is worth around $300,000. If the Titans were to buy him, they would have $233,000 left to spend on 2 players.

NB: I have nothing to do with Titans management and the valuations only apply to me.

i doubt that SOO and Aust prop in Bails is worth only 30,000 more than a fringe first grade prop in hendo

I rate Henderson very highly, and as I said these are the views of me only.

Darren Lockyer
14-07-06, 02:58 PM
that is good evaluation but it think take about $30 000 of henderson and put it on prince. I also think we have enough money to match ohter clubs with myles but the management want to buy some higher profile players as well.

i rate hendo to but hes not worth only 30,000 less than what some call the best alround prop running around

Is James Stosic of enough quality to be a starting prop? I haven't seen any of him so I wouldn't know, but I have never heard of him, thats why I question having him as a starting prop.

he starts for the sharks but i would have hendo and a few more before him.it hink he would be better as a impact prop. hes really big and would be better when the other team is tired

Matt Petesen played for America, Anthony Laffranchi most certainly did not.

After my valuations it turns out the strongest team is:
1. Mathers
2. Petersen
3. Delaney
4. Webster
5. Carney
6. Campbell
7. Prince
8. Bailey
9. Friend
10. Puletua
11. Laffranchi
12. Meyers
13. Swain

14. Hodgson (Reserve FR)
15. Minichello (Reserve SR)
16. Henderson (Reserve FR and SR)
17. Cooper/O?Dwyer (The utility that you always want playing off the bench)

18. Cooper/O'Dwyer
19. Graham
20. Turner
21. Amos
22. Stosic
I know that their may be controversy because i put petersen in and turner out, but turner signed on to play fullback, and the titans have a better one in mathers.

Darren Lockyer
15-07-06, 11:48 AM
