Titans: Craig Wing to the Gold Coast?

http://www.sydneyroosters.com.au/images/season2005/photogallery/WingC_6050711_Z_daneroostersweb_w346h231q50.jpg

Danny "Pigeon" Weidler (Pigeon after Glen McGrath as he is a hit or miss merchant when it comes to "breaking" a story) aired the possibility of Craig Wing being looked at by the Titans in 2007 given he is not a happy camper at the Roosters.

Interesting possibilty and he would make a great hooker though I think this is just a case of "when in doubt, link the player to the Gold Coast Titans who are looking for players in 2007."

The link is made easier (as it was with Fitzgibbon which turned out to be nothing more than a rumour) given John Cartwright is our coach and former assistant to Ricky Stuart.

Thoughts?

Ok because I am seriously lazy ATM... it is 11:45pm and I am about to watch TV, I'll just copy and paste what I wrote in the other thread, with some additions... ;)

Weidler had Wing to the Tigers or the Titans... I think if it were serious, a move for Craig Wing would be a good acquistion, as he is a good player, strong and could be very handy as far as a running and darting player is concerned. Wing offers options in attack and off the bench could be very useful too.

I think that Wing might be a bit too much money for the backline when you can sign a player like Webster, who can do similar things, and especially if he is going to be played off the bench, however he is a good player and I'd be happy if the Titans signed him.... :)

I think its a "when in doubt, link the player to the Gold Coast Titans who are looking for players in 2007" case TBH.

Im not going to say Weidler is wrong, because i dont know..i dont have any sources that say other wise.

I dont think he would really be a good signing anyway....i think he is past his best. And thats why i think he may look over-seas.

I agree, I think he is past his best... but NRL teams will still be willing to take a gamble on him IMO

I'd have wing first choice hooker, he's a sharp player, he would be a huge siging, but I think it's unlikely he will.

I do't think he'll come.He is to expensive for how good he is. He is lacking form and is to expensive

gee big gamble he will command top dollar if he gets back to his best would be great but gee big risk

Let's all remember Craig Wing is all of 27 y.o. with 17 Tests and 10 State of Origin appearances to his name with three Roo Tours under his belt - this is a world class player we are talking about here playing in and out of position for a struggling Sydney Roosters team.

Remember, "a change is as good as a holiday" in any job and Craig Wing still has plenty to offer rugby league. To use another cliche, "form is temporary, class is permanent", this applies to Craig Wing.

Do I think we are chance of nabbing him IF he is released from the Roosters? Not really given his asking price though a change of lifestyle and ties with Carty put us in a decent position to entice Wing north of the border.

He has experience behind him and he will not be at the roosters next year so the titans look like his best option

ive also hear for the last month that the dragons are really looking at him to come over as a back-up forif gaz doesnt fit the 5/8th role. but signing wolford might have killed it of cause if gaz is a success then either wing, woolford or Goz will have to be out of the team

do remember souths'n'titans that he is also fielding offers from Rugby Union teams

That's right... and the Western Force are looking for a number 10 to go with Giteau.. Wing could be the signing they need... so that can't be ruled out at all.. ;)

he would be a good signing if we could get him but tis the $$$, just depends on wat his asking

I also think he would be a good signing but perhaps would be too expensive!

with webster signing i now think he would be to much

I think it's a very realistic option for the Titans. Because apparently he's hating it at the Roosters and given his performances of late, he doesn't command a great amount of money.

I dont think that he will go to the titans, at least not in the next season...

As Ian Turpie and Larry Emdur have espoused all these years - "If the price is right!"

Wing would be an excellent starting hooker/utility player for the Titans but I definitely wouldn't be paying overs for him.

wing would be great in the 9 - a much better signing than nathan friend - who doesnt really offer much versatility or ball playing skills

I'd say have a go at signing him. If he is fair dinkum about reserecting his career, a pay cut and move away from bondi junction could just be the tonic. You'll never know unless an offer is tabled.

i reckon wing would play much better elsewhere, but i also believe that nathan friend can do just as well a job. he is not needed in the halves and there for would be a big waste of money. sign someone like greg bird or brenton bowen, someone thats not a very highly paid player but has the ability to fit in and dominate in a new team.

Wing is a strong and quick player but I'm not a fan of him in the Hooking role.
I think he is a specialist utility player and utility players are great for rep games, basic pattern and easy to fill in.

I think every club develops a utility player during the season and I don't think Wing is worth spending the money on.

I don't think he's beyond his best. Definately not in the best form of his career, but he could definately peak again.. maybe a change of environment is just the kick up the bum his career needs.

i can't really turn down a player of his class.

RUMOUR: Ten News has reported that Penrith are about to offer Craig Wing money... more details as they come to hand, but keep a watch out on this one... ;)

Yeah it will be hard for him. Because hes a player that seems to look for the money instead..

Seems logical with the Panthers losing Preston so Wing could play in the #6 jersey. But that's dependant as well on today's other rumour that Lewis is interested in moving there permanently from next year (was in this week's Big League)...

SYDNEY Roosters utility Craig Wing has been linked with a $250,000 switch to Penrith next season if the Bondi Junction club is prepared to release him.

The Saturday Daily Telegraph understands the Panthers want Wing to play five-eighth after missing out on Jamie Lyon but the move hinges on whether the Roosters will let him go.

The Australia and New South Wales Origin star is under contract at Bondi Junction until the end of 2007, but he has been the subject of enormous speculation about the Roosters looking to release him for much of this year.

Panthers general manager Mick Leary last night refused to confirm or deny the 2003 premier was interested in Wing.

And Roosters chief executive Brian Canavan was adamant Wing remained "under contract until 2007".

"That's news to me - I can't help you," Leary said.

"We're sitting back having a look at all our options at the moment.

"We've got no firm offers out to anyone at the moment so it's all hypothetical.

"There's a lot of players that we're interested in but I'm not confirming or denying whether we're interested in any high-profile player."

A decision on Wing's future may become clearer after Roosters chairman Nick Politis returns from holidaying with family in Honolulu.

The Roosters may consider releasing Wing provided a rival club is willing to pick up his entire $250,000 a season salary.

Roosters chief Canavan last night said neither Penrith nor any other NRL club had telephoned to inquire about a possible release for Wing.

"There's been no call at all from his manager or any other club and the overriding fact is he's on contract next year," Canavan said.

"It's just one of those things where we're just looking for any angle we possibly can to turn our season around."

It would be good to see Craig Wing at the titans, he is a better player than what he has shown this year, maybe he is not happy at the Chooks or with the coach, when he is in form i think he is one of the most dangerous attacking players in the game.
