Is it the beginning?

City of Sydney Council and Rabbitohs to Upgrade Erskineville Oval

Erskineville Oval will be upgraded for local community and South Sydney District Rugby League Football Club (SSDRLFC) sporting use, with stadium, park and lighting work improvements, under a proposal to be presented to Council, Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP announced today.

?Due to reports about maintenance needed at Erskineville Oval, I asked Council staff in February to develop a plan for work required, in consultation with Souths," Ms Moore said.

?Green space is a vital component of a healthy city and a healthy community, especially in future development zones like South Sydney.

?In a densely populated city, open space provides an opportunity for active and passive recreation and a social meeting point which can have significant benefits for general well-being and quality of life.?

The project aims to improve the appearance and usability of Erskineville Oval for the local community and community sporting club use.

Peter Holmes ? Court said that he and his business partner Russell Crowe welcomed the City Council?s assistance in providing funds to upgrade the Rabbitohs? current training facility and an important community resource.

?The upgrading of Erskineville Oval, and specifically the investment by the Council shows that the South Sydney Football Club can work with the Council to provide facilities for both our Club and the community,? Mr Holmes ? Court said.

?A redeveloped ?Erko? will not only assist the Rabbitohs, but will also provide a facility where the children of the area can watch, interact with, and aspire to becoming professional footballers like the Rabbitohs? players.?

?Russell and I are committed to investing further in the fit-out of the facilities, specifically upgrading the video room and gym, and installing a coaches office. This work will start in early May.?

The South Sydney Football Club will make Erskineville Oval their main training base until the completion of the $19 million City Council funded redevelopment of Redfern Oval, which is scheduled to be completed in early 2008.

Rabbitohs? CEO Shane Richardson is delighted with the outcome of months of discussions with the Council.

?I?m very pleased about the upgrading of facilities at Erskineville Oval as it will provide our players with a better environment in which to prepare, and also provide this community with a public facility that can be used by all,? Mr Richardson said.

?We have been in talks with Clover Moore and the City of Sydney Council for a number of months regarding some exciting projects, the first of which will be the upgrading of Erskineville Oval.

?I?m glad it has all come together and we can move on to the work starting on the facility in the coming weeks.?

South Sydney Juniors President Keith McCraw is also pleased that junior players in the district will have a quality facility for their use.

?Erskineville Oval is the home of South Sydney Juniors and we are very happy that the Council has committed funds to upgrade the ground,? Mr McCraw said.

?Thousands of junior players will now have an improved ground to play on as they are watched by supporters on better seating with quality amenities. Erskineville Oval is a facility that has helped produce a number of players for the NRL competition, and strategically the ground is very important for inner-city Clubs such as Alexandria Rovers, Redfern All Blacks, Moore Park and Chelsea. It is also close to the rail link which makes it easier for our junior representative players to attend training at Erskineville.

?We welcome this announcement and look forward to using the new Erskineville Oval in the not too distant future, along with our partners the South Sydney Rabbitohs.?

This park project forms part of a $100m investment to green Sydney, by expanding our urban forest with new parks and upgrading existing green space.

The green vision includes 70 separate projects ranging from new community playgrounds to a $19m new public park in Pyrmont on the former water police site.

Following a vote by members to accept the bid from Peter Holmes ? Court and Russell Crowe, Ms Moore said she looked forward to working with the new board for South Sydney.

?We congratulate Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes ? Court for gaining the support of the majority of South Sydney Members,?? Ms Moore said.

?I welcome the opportunity to meet, and look forward to working with, the new administration for South Sydney?s future, as the Club provides role models and career paths for the youth of South Sydney.

?We will work with the club to support them in a new era for the South Sydney community.?

The City of Sydney held a meeting in late February 2006 with representatives of the South Sydney District Rugby League Football Club (SSDRLFC) to review the existing conditions at Erskineville Oval.

It is anticipated the package of maintenance and upgrade works will cost approximately $300,000, with work due to begin in May, subject to Council funding approval.

Proposed upgrade works:

? Improve the oval playing surface e.g. top dressing and turf grass improvements;
? Install an oval perimeter fence (one metre high);
? Repair and paint timber bench seats in stadium and open air seating area;
? Provide a pedestrian path between Ashmore Street and Fox Avenue;
? Improve and upgrade the pedestrian access onto the oval from Ashmore Street;
? Undertake arborist review/ maintenance works on existing trees;
? Provide some new tree plantings;
? General audit of existing building conditions and minor building repairs, including painting and gutter replacement;
? Upgrade oval training lights (replace luminaries);
? Upgrade public toilet facilities.

This would never have happened under George Piggins. The Rabbitohs will bounce back now they are going to be on a level playing field as far as training facilities go.
