DYLAN Montgomery has had a short taste of top-level rugby league with the Manly Sea Eagles.

But rather than satisfying the hard-running prop, it has left him wanting more.

The 22-year-old moved from Ballina to Sydney straight out of Under-18s and went on to play a number of years with the Sea Eagles in Jersey Flegg (Under-19s) and Premier League.

But with Manly now boasting a competitive forward pack in the NRL, Montgomery has headed back to Ballina to re-establish his career, with an eye to pressing his claims with the Gold Coast Titans.

Last week against Marist Brothers, Montgomery played strongly, leading the young Sea-gulls forwards with panache.
This week Ballina coach Chris Binge will be looking of more of the same from the well-built front-rower when the Sea-gulls meet the Kyogle Turkeys at New Park, Kyogle, in the second round of the Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League tomorrow.

"Dylan still has family up here and he wants to improve his football," Ballina football manager Brad Mansfield said.

"We?ve had a couple of good talks with him. We told him if he came back here and had a big year in the local competition and played rep, he?d get people looking at him.

"He has his eye on the Titans.

"He?s a good-sized bloke and a good trainer and I can?t speak highly enough about him."

Montgomery is far from your typical prop. According to Mansfield, the young bookend has a neat off-load and is a fine defender who moves well laterally.

But it?s his maturity at such a young age that has impressed Mansfield.

With Ballina fielding a forward pack with an average age around 21, Montgomery has emerged as its leader.

"He communicates pretty well and he?s really helped Dean French (the other prop), who?s just come out of Under-18s," Mansfield said.

The similarities between the make-up of the Ballina and Kyogle teams are remarkable.

Both boast sides that are much younger than last year, but still have a few experienced players.

Seagulls captain Shaun Laurie has moved into five-eighth to help in the direction of his young team-mates, while Kyogle lock Don Walker is a big asset to the Turkeys.

This guy sounds like he could be a good prospect for the Titans. Does anyone know much else about him?

Yup, would be a good prospect with the right coaching under his belt, which he will definately get at Ballina. More of the Ryles style build but has great lateral movement for a big kid. Like most Props I think they rate their own ball playing skills, this kid though can pass as well.
