Its coming out around November, same time as PS3. Here is some info I got from another forum.

Backwards compatability:
You can download your favourite NES, SNES and N64 games, and it was recently announced that 1000 sega genesis and Turbographix games will also be avalable. On top of this, Gamecube games can be played via insertiong the disc into the drive.

Revolutionary Controller

Since a revolution without flailing your arms around like a ****** isnt worth having after all, and the geniuses at the big N thought of that aswell.

The Controller (hereon refered to as the "RevMote" hehe) has instruments that can detect movement not only on the X and Y axis, but the Z axis, and angles. What does that mean? well, it means it can be used as a mouse does in an RTS, and it makes aiming in FPS a breez. It can also act as a makeshift light gun (That reminds me of when i was a kid i would aim our TV remote like it was a gun).

On top of that, it can be used as any number of objects. Examples? Cricket bats. tennis raquets swords....

the list goes on. I cant wait for some FPS on that baby....

Nintendo WiFi Connection

Its like XBOX live, but free. Stat tracking, patches, downloadable games, matchmaking, friends and rivals list.... Its a souped up version of the DS version.

Also, each revolution can plug into your PC to store content. It can also plug into monitors as well as TV's.

Last but not least:

Its sleek, its smooth and lets face it... its just awesome

Yes very spiffy...and it is good to see Nintendo going back to the simple design.. it is an updated version of the first nintendo consoles... the grey and black boxes.. :D

I like it.. but yes I think if I want to by a console system... which I might at the end of this year... I will go with either an XBOX 360 or a PS3

Looking forward to the Revolution. The new Red Steel game announced looks great, that utilises the new controlling mechanism.

I think if Nintendo can sort out their abysmal marketing and distribution they'll go well.

The titles for the Cube were there, there was a lot of titles, they just weren't distributed correctly or marketed.

I think with the lower price point, a lot of people will be picking up a Rev to put along side their XBOX and PS3.

I hope Nintendo hold the new Zelda over from Cube to Rev, releasing Zelda on Cube would be a massive mistake, especially at the time of a release of a new console. I know people will be pissed, but Zelda must be a launch title for Rev, milk it for all its potential.

Rev needs killer titles in the launch line up.

Nintendo has officially named their new console.......Nintendo Wii!

************************************************** ************

Nintendo names new console
Correspondents in Los Angeles
APRIL 28, 2006

NINTENDO has named its new video game console "Wii, which it said is pronounced "we" to emphasize that the console is for everyone.

The console up until now has been known by its code-name "Revolution."
"While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer," spokeswoman Perrin Kaplan said.

Nintendo, best known for its Game Boy portable video players, aims to gain share in the $US25 billion ($32 billion) global video game market now dominated by Sony.

Microsoft launched its next-generation Xbox 360 console late last year and Sony's new PlayStation 3 is due in November. Wii also is expected to hit store shelves later this year.

While the new consoles from Microsoft and Sony boast more power and high-definition graphics, Nintendo's goal is to roll out a machine that appeals to a broader audience than the young males who make up the traditional console gaming market.

A key feature of the Wii is its one-handed controller that looks like a television remote control and uses motion-detection sensors that allow players to control the game by wielding it like a sword, waving it like a conductor's baton, or swinging it like a baseball bat.

Nintendo's Wii makes its US debut
November 20, 2006 - 12:12AM

Nintendo's new Wii video game console debuted at midnight (1600 AEDT) in New York today as thousands of die-hard fans, some of whom camped out for several days, welcomed the final entrant in the three-way scramble for dominance in the $US30 billion ($A39.19 billion) global game market.

At the Times Square Toys "R" Us store in New York, a line snaked around the block, with more than 1,000 gamers vying for first rights to take the scrappy game company's new machine home.

More than 900 enthusiasts gathered for the West Coast release at the GameStop store at Hollywood's Universal City Walk.

"We have enough product to satisfy the demand that's anticipated," Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime told Reuters.

Instead of trying to steal hard-core gamers from Microsoft and Sony, which have already released the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles, Nintendo hopes to expand the traditionally male video game audience by luring new players.

Nintendo priced the Wii at $US250 ($A326), compared with the $US600 ($A784) premium PS3 and the $US400 ($A523) top-end Xbox 360.

Kyoto-based Nintendo, which created video game characters Super Mario and Donkey Kong, has hooked girls and seniors with its Nintendogs pet training games and its Brain Age cognitive fitness title for its hand-held DS machine that is a break-out hit.

The device offers touch-screen and voice recognition capabilities that allow users to pet and speak commands to their dog or to write and speak answers to brain teasers.

Nintendo has taken a similar approach with the Wii.

The console's computing power is dwarfed by the Xbox 360 and the PS3. And the Wii does not offer the lifelike, high-definition graphics its bigger rivals boast.

Still, the Wii has captivated cynical gamers with its one-handed, motion-sensitive controller that lets users simulate fishing, playing tennis or shooting a bow and arrow.

"That's what makes you feel in the game," said Sergio Gonzalez, 18, who along with friends Anton Stockton and Tulgat Vandandorj, has been at the front of the Wii line at a Los Angeles Best Buy store since Friday afternoon.

Gonzalez and his buddies say they will not sell their Wiis on internet auction site eBay - where people are selling reserved Wiis at an average price of $US605 ($A790).

Waiting in line in Times Square, 17-year-old Xavier Herrera had the same plan: "I'm playing it tonight."

Some people who got their hands on the PS3 early also sold the system on eBay, getting more than four times its retail price.

Nintendo expects to ship four million Wii consoles globally by December 31, double the number of PS3s expected by year's end.

Nintendo's last console, the GameCube, sold 21 million units globally to land in third place, behind Sony's PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox.
The company sold 11 million GameCubes in the United States and intends to double that number with the Wii.

Video game analyst David Cole, president of DFC Intelligence, said Nintendo is offering a one-two punch at launch with its games The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Wii Sports.

"I have to get Zelda," said Isaiah Johnson, 29, who was dressed in a black leather Nintendo coat and a Zelda sweatshirt. He was in line at Times Square, and got what he came for.

The Wii console will make its Australian debut on December 7.

What Nintendo really needs is a good stream of quality and to a lesser extent exclusive software. If there is a games drought it will hurt the Wii badly.

Hopefully a lot of companies will port games to the Wii and use the classic controller, there is no reason to always use the motion sensor controls.

Wii Sells 600,000 Units So Far

Number accounts for units sold in "the Americas," Nintendo mum on formerly promised number of one million. Also, Zelda sells a lot.

WII IS A MASSIVE HIT

600,000 First-Week Purchases Attracting Veteran and New Gamers

REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 27, 2006 - Built on a foundation of pure fun, Nintendo's new Wii? video game system sold through to more than 600,000 consumers in the Americas in just its first eight days of availability. That's a rate of nearly one per second continuously since the Nov. 19 launch. Including just first-party software and accessory sales, Wii instantly has become a $190 million business in the Americas. During the Thanksgiving holiday shopping weekend, there was plenty of conversation across the nation about the high demand for the Wii system, with the acknowledgment that if you see one, you'd better buy it.

"Even with sales already in excess of 600,000 units, demand continues to exceed supply, as it's clear this is one of the ?gotta-have' products for the holiday season," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We've shipped retailers several times the amount of hardware the other company was able to deliver for its launch around the same time - and we still sold out. Given the inclusive nature of Wii game play, we're seeing this new form of video gaming is already a huge hit with gamers and newcomers alike. It continues to be a phenomenal launch."

The system also is succeeding in its stated mission of reinvigorating current players, while attracting new ones. Every Wii system includes the five-game Wii Sports? software, which is the talk of the Internet, featuring countless reports on how previously devout non-gamers have suddenly been converted via the amazing new way games are experienced using the system's remarkable controller. At the same time, the masterful The Legend of Zelda?: Twilight Princess, a favorite of avid gamers, already has achieved sales of more than 454,000 units in the Americas, representing more than 75 percent of all hardware purchasers.

Licensees, pleased not only with the sales performance of the Wii, but also its creative development capabilities, are publicly sharing their comments:

"Madden NFL 07 is a great example of how the Wii gives players a whole new experience on their favorite games," says EA Studio President Paul Lee. "EA's creative teams are working to build more Wii features into some of our most popular franchises."

"The creativity we've been able to unleash on the Wii system with our game Red Steel has been eye-opening for our development teams," explains Ubisoft President Laurent Detoc. "Having the opportunity to design and develop entirely new game-play experiences using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk is both exciting and rewarding."

Classic games also are proving to be a hit on Wii, which offers downloadable access to 20 years of the best of Nintendo?, Sega Genesis? and TurboGrafx16? hits via the system's Virtual Console? feature.

Nintendo Pushing For GoldenEye 007 On New Wii Console

Written by Devin Zydel on 29 Nov, 2006

Still labeled by many 007 fans as the best James Bond game ever, the popular GoldenEye 007 may be making a big comeback - reports HEXUS.

In an interview with MTV, Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aime has revealed that his company is doing everything in their power to bring back the GoldenEye 007 game for the new Wii console, which was released only a few days ago.

?Would I love to see it on virtual console? Absolutely. But there are a lot of issues there,? he said. ?Suffice it to say we would love to see it, so we?re exploring all the rights issues.?

What some of these issues entail is that both Microsoft (which purchased U.K.based Rare Ltd, the company behind GoldenEye 007) and Activision, the current holder of the Bond video game rights, would have to agree on this title being released once more.

Time will tell?

The wait for Wii is over
Asher Moses
December 7, 2006

Thousands of gamers queued up around the country for the midnight launch of the Nintendo Wii game console last night.

Events were held at stores nationwide, including EB Games, Toys R Us, The Gamesmen, Harvey Norman and numerous smaller specialist gaming outlets.

EB Games was the most enthusiastic about the launch, holding midnight events at most of its Australian stores, said Brad Harker, EB Games' director of stores for Australia and New Zealand.

Justin Turner, 26, lined up with his partner at the EB Games outlet at Centrepoint in Sydney's CBD.

"I feel like a kid again," he said.

"We've essentially been playing the same games for the last 20 years ? this [the Wii] is something different."

Others, like Tony Maclennan, 27, trekked to the store at midnight to be part of the launch atmosphere.

"It's like the true geeks and nerds come out at midnight," he said, adding "once you're a Nintendo fanboy, you're a Nintendo fanboy for life".

Thomas Macleod, 27, agreed with Mr Maclennan's sentiments: "I've been a Nintendo fan since the Super NES ? I wanted to get it [the Wii] as soon as possible so I can play it tomorrow morning."

Yesterday, Mr Harker said he expected the launch to be "one of our most successful Nintendo launches ever".

Nintendo had similar expectations. A company spokesman said: "Australian retail feedback suggests Wii is heading towards being the biggest launch of any new video games system in history."

According to Nintendo, the largest of last night's launches was held at EB Games' Chadstone store in Melbourne, featuring "dress up competitions, Wii tennis tournaments, prizes and giveaways".

Midnight events have fast become tradition for games console debuts, as they allow keen gamers to collect their pre-ordered consoles the second they're authorised for sale.

After fulfilling their pre-order demand, Mr Harker said that EB Games outlets would today "have a supply for walk-in customers [who haven't pre-ordered], but it will be limited".

Nintendo declined to specify the number of Wii consoles that had been shipped to Australia, but a spokesman said he expected the initial batch to sell out fast.

The Australian debut follows similar midnight launches in the US and Japan. Both were highly successful, with gamers queuing up outside their local retailers for hours.

Nintendo said that in the US it had sold more than 600,000 Wii units in the first eight days of them going on sale.

That was a rate of nearly one a second, the company said.

The Japanese launch, held this week, was even more successful. Virtually all of the 400,000 units initially shipped to the country sold out on day one.

A bitter rivalry will now begin between the Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360, as both consoles compete for sales this Christmas.

Microsoft has sold over 100,000 Xbox 360 units in the seven months since its launch, which it says makes it the fastest-selling games console in Australian history.

David McLean, Microsoft's Xbox regional director for Australia and New Zealand, expects this success to continue over Christmas.

"With our huge range of games and accessories, Xbox 360 offers a complete entertainment package for all ages," he said.

But prospective buyers will soon have another choice, the Sony's Playstation 3, which is set to be released in Australia in March.

Nintendo says the price for the Wii is one of its biggest advantages - the Xbox 360 is selling for around $650, while the Wii is $399.95.

The Wii is also expected to appeal to those who don't regard themselves as gamers.

Its core differentiating factor is the unconventional user interface. Users interact with the Wii using a wireless controller that is shaped like a conventional television remote.

Players can control the in-game action by waving the controller through the air. "For example, in the Wii tennis game, players swing the Wii remote like a racquet to hit the ball, as in real life," the company said.

"They can add topspin or slice the ball just by angling their hands and wrist like they would in a real match."

Nintendo has also announced a "nunchuk" controller, which connects to the regular Wii remote and, due to its hand-fitting shape, is ideal for use with action and sports games.

It was awesome, we played mainly Wii Sports and Wii Play.

Baseball and bowling are the best, boxing is great but really physical we were puffing and sweating from some really tight and hard fought battles.

Zelda is the best game EVER.

Played a bit of call of duty, loved the controls.

The controller is fantastic, as soon as you pick it up, it feels natural. The motion sensor tech is fantastic and it makes the simpliest things very fun and we also loved how the console makes you actually be active and stand up and move around.

Im so tired and incoherent, just thought I'd share some thoughts. Im off to play ZELDA!!

Oh and Capital Shark knows me VERY well, me and him go WAY back, YEARS AND YEARS! He has me worked out. But we are both big Nintendo fans! Especially back in the N64 years.

Im looking forward to getting Wario. I tell you an olympics game on this would be amazing or a new california games!!

I am deciding between the Wii and the 360. I am leaning towards the Wii purely as it is cheaper in every way, but the 360 has better graphics and more media friendly.

Have you played the Wii yet, what do you think?

This question can be directed at you too DIEHARD.

Just get a Wii and use your PC as well for games. That'll cover all bases pretty well.

Wii for action, adventure, sports and party games, PC for strategy, first person and RPGS. :guit:

I dunno, I spose Wii Sports is similar to the eye toy in a way, and it is very popular atm, So i think it can really only go down from here...I think the whole idea of actually physically playing the game will eventually get a bit boring, as the eye toy did. BUT...i havn't played the Wii yet so i can't really judge until i do...

What point are you trying to make? That Wii Sports will become boring or that Wii will become boring?

I think the whole idea of actually physically playing the game will eventually get a bit boring, as the eye toy did.

But is it fair to compare a console, with many games and many developers creating content for it, to a game series on a traditional console? I don't think it is. I agree partially with your point - Eye Toy is pretty boring - but I don't agree with your logic "Well EyeToy was ultimately boring and Wii is sorta like it so...".

Yeah the EyeToy was the most boring thing to happen to the PS2... comparing it to the Wii which uses basically the same idea with REAL games = not good.

BTW Diehard, I'm in the same category as you. I'll be using the Wii for the classics and the games that actually play better with the controls, and I'll use my PC to get superior graphics (PC graphics are actually better than PS3 graphics if you have a top line video card) and for the games that are made easier with the presence of a keyboard and mouse.

Mum's keeping my Wii in the cupboard until Christmas (I dunno why, maybe just to keep up the tradition of getting presents on Christmas day). Only 14 days to go, and I can experience the greatness of the console :D

Nintendo Sued over Wii Remote Functionality

Interlink Electronics has filed a lawsuit against Nintendo, alleging that the Wii Remote rips off a patent the company filed in September 1997 (approved 7.5 years later in February 2005 - nice punctionality patent office...). Specifically, the company maintains that the Remote infringes on its own device when it comes to being trigger-operated (the B button) and pointing capability. In addition to monetary compensation, the company is also asking that Nintendo be permanently banned from selling the Wii Remote in its current form.

While this complaint is certainly worth watching, it's doubtful that Nintendo will actually be required to stop selling the Wii Remote. Part of the basis for Interlink's claim is that it patented trigger functionality, but as any gamer knows even the N64 controller had a trigger...and it was released in the US a year before the patent was originally filed. Also, suits that ask for the defendant to stop selling its product rarely end without some sort of settlement that allows the company to continue selling its product. Interlink may have a legitimate complaint on the pointer functionality however (although I doubt they were the first to think of it)...but that's for a court to decide.

http://wii.vggen.com/

I bet this was designed for video presentations and not video games. I doubt Nintendo would slip up legally, not assuring the coast is clear patent wise. As if they are gonna stop selling Wii...

Dr. Phil Gives Away Wiis To Studio Audience

Today the Dr. Phil show gave the entire studio audience Wiis as part of the "Dr. Phil and Robin's Christmas Show!"

During the segment, they rolled a video of Dr. Phil and one of his sons Jay playing Wii Sports (tennis) with the outcome in Dr. Phil's favor.

Another son, Jordan, after the video joked:

Yeah. I had quite a Wii night, I played tennis for so long that I woke up and could barely move my right arm. And my bicep was huge!

In addition to the console, everyone will be treated to a year subscription to GamezNFlix.

Now all that needs to happen is getting the Wii onto Oprah and the circle of advertisement will be complete.

Broken Wii straps to be replaced

by Kyoko Hasegawa in Hong Kong

December 16, 2006 06:40am
Article from: Agence France-Presse

THE Japanese electronic game maker Nintendo said overnight it would replace wrist straps on its new Wii console with a "newer version" after reports of motion-sensing controllers crashing into users' television screens.

But the company denied it was recalling the equipment, saying there was "no problem with the current wrist strap if it is used reasonably and instructions furnished by Nintendo in user manuals included with the game are followed." "Nintendo is offering to replace the original version of the wrist straps for the Wii Remote with a newer version," the company said in a statement posted on its website.

"We have received some reports that when consumers swing the Wii Remote with the original version of the wrist-strap using excessive force and accidentally let go, the cord connecting the controller to the wrist strap can break, potentially causing the Wii Remote to strike bystanders or objects."

Earlier, Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa said the first version of the controller strap "turned out to be insufficient in its strength for some customers" and would be replaced with a thicker one.

"The decision comes after reports that some users in the United States threw their controllers when playing with Wii sports software," he said.

The new Wii features a controller that can be used as a sword, tennis racket or car steering wheel in the games shown on screen.

Wii set itself apart from Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 consoles by designing a system that got players moving and encouraged family or friends to join in the activity.

But websites dubbed "Wii have a problem" and "Wii damage" have chronicled injuries and wreckage reportedly inflicted by Nintendo game controllers sent awry in the heat of play by wild swipes, loose grips or snapped wrist straps.

Wii controllers have been hurled or thrust into television and computer screens, according to online accounts, breaking windows, glasses, dishes, stereos, walls and ceiling fans.

The official Wii website warns users to "hold the Wii Remote firmly and do not let go" when playing, while taking a moment to dry perspiring hands to prevent injury to people or damage to objects.

Nintendo, which launched the Wii in the United States last month and in Japan on Saturday, has been getting rave reviews for its new controller and games that shy away from blood-and-guts action.

The Wii outsold the rival PlayStation 3 by more than double in the United States in November, according to industry tracking group NPD, which estimates that Nintendo sold 476,140 of its Wii consoles against Sony's 196,580 PS3s.

Consoles shipped from early December already have the thicker strap.

Nintendo also said Friday that it would recall 200,000 AC/DC power adaptors for Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite portable game machines.

Nintendo said some adaptors supplied by Nagano Japan Radio Co Ltd (JRC) between January and October this year could generate excessive heat and possibly cause burn injury during charging.

Nintendo said that to date it has recorded nine such incidents of overheating. One such incident burned a hole in the body of the portable game machine but no injuries have been reported.

The Kyoto-based company said models with defective AC/DC adaptors were sold only in Japan.

Cumulative sales of Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite have so far reached 13 million units.

NINTENDO?S Wii CONSOLE BREAKS LAUNCH SALES RECORDS

32,901 units sold in the first four days

Australia, Melbourne, December 14, 2006 ? Nintendo is pleased to announce that in the first four days of sale, 32,901* consumers have purchased Wii?.

This means the Wii has officially broken the Australian record for the biggest launch of a video game system in history.

?The launch of Wii has been a fantastic success for us,? says Rose Lappin, Director of Sales and Marketing. ?We aim to bring gaming to the masses and I think we have taken some large steps in the right direction. Our main priority now is to deliver as many units as possible into retail channels, as quickly as possible, to try and meet this exceptional demand.?

Australia-wide, retailers experienced a surge of activity, with many reporting large queues in front of stores at openings and total sell-outs on launch day.

?Myer has just experienced a strong spike in total business which can be largely attributed to the introduction of Wii,? explains Bernie Brookes, Myer CEO. ?We couldn?t be happier with the fantastic products Nintendo are releasing. Our Wii launch experience has really shown that consumers have made Myer a destination store for gaming.?

The Wii has already proven to be a sell-out success in North America and Japan, and very recently sent Europe into a retail frenzy.

Nintendo is targeting to deliver 4 million Wii hardware units globally by the end of this calendar year and 6 million by the end of this fiscal year in March.

Wii is sold for an SRP of just $399.95. The price includes one wireless Wii Remote controller, one Nunchuk? controller and the groundbreaking collection of five different Wii Sports games on one disc.

The highest selling game for Wii is the critically acclaimed, The Legend of Zelda?: Twilight Princess. Reviews are flooding in, for what most are calling a modern masterpiece. IGN Australia says, ?Go and get it; give yourself time to savour it. It will amaze?.

Wii 'fastest selling console of all time'

Europeans fall in love with the new Nintendo.

Yesterday we reported that the Wii had fast become the fastest selling video game system in the UK's history. Of course, for Nintendo, that's just not good enough.

InStock Magazine is reporting that in just two days of sales across Europe, Nintendo had sold more than 325,000 machines across the continent. On top of this astonishing achievement, Zelda: Twilight Princess had an attachment rate of a massive 74%.

Previously, the machine had broken UK records with 105,000 machines sold in its first weekend of sales. This destroyed the record held by Microsoft's Xbox 360 and its 70,000 or so units sold when that machine launched.

OMG i just played Wii (sports) at my friends place and it is unreal!!!! The motion sensitivity is amazing! Boxing is the best by far!!! It's actually a bit of a work out:p lol.
Ten pin bowling was rather fun but the longevity would be minimal...ie, same thing every time...
Golf was surprisingly realistic considering you are holding a controller not actually a heavy club! It's a bit hard at first to get used to, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty fun!
Tennis is pretty good, top spin, backspin, it's all there! Once again the motion sensors were amazing!

That was all i got time for, but i have to say, Boxing was by far the best! It would actually work fine as a exercise program i reckon:p lol

But it is actually better than i thought:eek:...Didn't get time for any 'proper' games like Zelda, unfortunately, which would have been great coz obviously the sport graphics aren't exactly great...

Note that this is ONE MONTH after the Wii launch!

Lines, anger, police ... A Wii story

A CNN staffer learns first hand what it's like to be lucky ... maybe too lucky.

By Krysten Peek, Special to CNNMoney.com

We all know the new Nintendo Wii is the number one present to give this holiday season. You've heard the stories of those who camp out in front of stores the night before shipments come in, or those who pay double the cost on eBay. It's obvious that people will do almost anything to get their hands on this hot new item.

I found myself waiting for a Nintendo Wii one late afternoon. A massive shipment had just come in that morning and the line didn't look too unbearable, so I decided to wait and try my chances at getting one for my boyfriend. Since it was a little late in the day, I knew the odds were against me, but for some strange reason, I was feeling optimistic.

I didn't see any other women in line and I didn't bother talking to the guys around me. All of them were way too serious about this; full of anxiety and tension. I had never felt so out of place in my life. It seemed like each one of their lives depended on whether or not they got this game system. Their eyes were fixed on the front of the line. No one knew how many were left. We were all just hoping the last box would be ours.

After about 2 hours I was near the front of the line. Could this be it? I could see the pile of white boxes dwindling down. My heart sunk. I started to get nervous. Why didn't I come earlier? I couldn't imagine getting this close and not getting one! That wasn't even an option anymore.

Closer and closer until finally, I was handed a white box. I honestly could not believe it. In that one moment I became the girlfriend with the perfect Christmas present. My heart was pounding and I kept asking the guy, "Are you sure this is it? This is the new Nintendo Wii right?" I couldn't help it...I was shaking with excitement and felt like this was one great day.

While paying at the register, the man handling the Wii's said very loudly to the line full of people still waiting, "Sorry folks, that's it. There's no more for today." Instantly I started hearing groans and seeing other disappointing gestures. It was then that I realized the position I was in...here I was in line with all these tense guys who didn't get a game system and I did. All at once, I felt their angry, jealous eyes shift focus to me. To them, I was an easy target. But I felt confident that I could deal with angry Christmas shoppers. After all, there were still 2 weeks left of shopping. That's plenty of time to get a Wii.

"Hey, I'll give you triple for what you just paid..."

"There's no way you deserve that game system..."

"You probably don't even know how to play. Here, give it to me. I'll put it to good use..."

Were these people crazy?? Yes, they were. It only went downhill from there. While I was walking toward the exit, unsatisfied customers began to grab at my bag. Just like that! They were acting as if I was just going to give it to them. There was no way anyone was taking this away from me. I was caught off guard in a game of tug-a-war when a security guard intervened and rescued me from the chaos.

He took me outside. And the crowd followed.

The security guard flagged a police car. I thankfully jumped in. And it was a police escort for me and my Wii back to work.

I have not experienced any more drama with the Wii. Afraid of how my roommates would react to a Nintendo Wii being in our house, I hid it from them in a secure location until I can safely wrap it up and give it to my boyfriend for Christmas. Mission accomplished.

The amount of people playing the Wii who never play video games is incredible. The list of people I know who are playing the Wii who otherwise wouldnt play video games is as long as it is surprising.

Now that they have an installed base of over 2million, developers are flooding to the Wii, especially since the PS3 has basically bombed.

It's 360 and Wii all the way it seems. Well hell, you can get both for the same price as a PS3.

Wii-kly Update: Three new classic games announced for Wii Shop Channel

http://www.news4gamers.com/wii/News-19296.aspx

Today Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week?s new games are:

Gradius (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Across the galaxy, there exists a distant planet known as Gradius. Gradius? peaceful existence has been brought to an end by an intense space invasion by a race known as the Bacterion. To save the planet, the hyperspace fighter Vic Viper has been deployed to fight the Bacterion invasion. Players pilot the Vic Viper through seven stages, shooting and dodging through deadly obstacles, while using various power-ups, including missiles, lasers, options and shields. The Vic Viper?s target is the enemy fortress, Xaerous. The only way to end the war is to plunge deep through the enemy forces and destroy its very core.

Soldier Blade (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): A new shooter in the ?Star Soldier? tradition. Players play as an SIA (Special Interception Airforce) pilot flying the heavy assault fighter ?Soldier Blade.? Players face the Zeograd invasion force with weapon attacks that change each time they grab a power-up item. Players can unleash three different kinds of attack depending on the color of the power-up item. New features, such as the ?Gunbody? option for avoiding enemy attacks and the ?Burst Out? system (which has a different effect depending on the power-up level), add a strategic element that requires players to make snap decisions about which items to grab and when to use special attacks. Awesome boss battles await players at the end of each operation. Playing in ?CHALLENGE? mode requires players to try to get as many points as they can in a limited amount of time.

Dungeon Explorer (TurboGrafx16, 1-5 players, 600 Wii Points): Dungeon Explorer is a multiplayer action/role-playing game where up to five players can play at the same time. The story takes place in underground dungeons. Players can choose from eight different character types: Fighter, Thief, Warlock, Witch, Bishop, Elf, Bard or Knome. Depending on the character, the types of magic, attack strength and movement will all vary. To survive, players most know all about their enemies? weaknesses. Players also must know about the special attributes of each magic spell and use them to their greatest advantage. In team-play games, working together is the key to victory. Any combination of Wii Remotes and Nintendo GameCube controllers can be used in multiplayer games.

Wii tops new console launches
[UPDATE] Nintendo's upstart platform sells 1.1 million in 2006, versus 687,300 PS3s; both surpass the 607,000 Xbox 360s sold in 2005; 1.1 million 360s sold in December.

With the release of NPD Funworld's 2006 numbers today, one big question was answered. Namely, the figures revealed which of the three formerly next-generation consoles sold the most at launch.

http://img.gamespot.com/gamespot/images/2007/010/wiictory547_embed.jpg

To those following the industry, the winner should come as no surprise. From its release on November 19 until December 31, more than 1.1 million "new-gen" Wiis were sold in the US. That was nearly double the approximately 687,300 PlayStation 3s sold following its November 17 launch until the end of the year. By comparison, the just over 607,000 Xbox 360s were sold in 2005 following its November 22 launch.

During December 2006, the 360 sold more than 1.1 million units, no doubt benefiting from scant supplies of the PS3 and the popularity of Gears of War. As of the end of 2006, Microsoft's console had sold just over 4.5 million units in the US and more than 10.4 million worldwide.

But before the Nintendo faithful begin writing epitaphs for Sony and Microsoft, NPD senior marketing manager David Riley said the only thing holding back the 360 and PS3 was production capacity. "Comparing the three consoles is like apples and oranges," he told GameSpot. "It was all about availability. Microsoft and Sony were moving them as fast as they could put them out. [But] Nintendo was on the ball."

Riley also thought the PS3's high price--$499 for the 20GB model, $599 for the 60GB--wasn't as large a factor as many have made it out to be. "I think price plays a role there, but remember during the holiday season people have deep pockets," he said. "Kids know what they want, and if they tell mom to go buy a PS3 and she comes home with a Wii, they won't be happy."

Fundamentally, though, Riley thinks that there are no losers in the next-gen console war--only winners. "I know plenty of gamers who own multiple platforms. That's why I despise the term console wars," he said. "I have all three, and I buy the software I want for each one."

[UPDATE] Within an hour of the NPD numbers' release, the spin doctors were out in force. Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America's director of corporate communications, said that his company did indeed ship 1 million PS3s in North America in 2006. "NPD doesn't account for Canada... [and] doesn't cover all of our USA retailers," he told GameSpot. "We sold-in more than 150,000 systems the last week of December, so there were many units in transit or at retailer's backrooms waiting to be put out [by year's end]."

For its part, Microsoft claimed outright victory over the holidays. "The Xbox 360 garnered a 51 percent market share in the United States for December 2006...outselling the PlayStation 3 and Wii combined in December and outselling all next-generation consoles in November and December," the company said in a statement.

Analysts were also skeptical, with some believing that the Wii sold more than NPD reported. "I don't understand how US Wii sell-through could be 1.1 million cumulatively, with Nintendo saying that they shipped half of their 4 million here and zero inventory on retail shelves at year end," said Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter. "Where are the other 900,000 units? I assume 200,000 are in transit, but this number makes no sense to me at all."

Nintendo responds to controller Emmy win

Nintendo, along with Sony, has been recognised for one of its controller inventions.

January 13, 2007 - The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recently presented Nintendo with an Emmy Award for the creation of its controller icon, the D-pad, just one of Nintendo's many innovative inventions.

The Big N received the award specifically for what the D-pad has brought to gaming, with the simple device having totally changed how people play games and further, how they interact with their televisions.

Sony also received an Emmy for its Dual Shock controller, but wrongly issued its own statement last week claiming the award was for its PlayStation 3 SIXAXIS controller.

?Nintendo has long been a pioneer in the way that people interact with their games,? said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. ?Our commitment to pushing the envelope continues today with our motion-sensitive Wii Remote controllers, which again rewrite the rules. We are grateful for this award and thank the academy for the honor.?

http://www.aussie-nintendo.com/images/NEWS/nes_controller.jpg

The D-pad - which essentially replaced the proven joystick - was early evidence that Nintendo was willing to take risks and attempt to redefine how people play games.

A Californian woman who took part in a water-drinking contest to win a video game system has died of water intoxication, tests have shown.
Jennifer Strange had taken part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" game run by KDND 107.9 radio in Sacramento, which promised the winner a Nintendo Wii.

A work colleague said Ms Strange had reported her head was hurting hours after the contest and was going home.

Ms Strange, 28, was found dead on Friday at her house in Rancho Cordova.

Local assistant coroner Ed Smith said initial tests showed death was "consistent with water intoxication".

Contestants were first given eight ounce (225 millilitre) bottles to drink every 15 minutes.

Contestant James Ybarra told Associated Press news agency: "They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk."

Mr Ybarra said he quit after five bottles but remaining contestants started on larger bottles.

"She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for her kids," Mr Ybarra said.

One of Ms Strange's work colleagues, Laura Rios, said: "She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad.

"She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."

The station said its staff were stunned at the death.

Blizzard talks World of Warcraft on Wii

January 15, 2007 - Nintendo's Wii Remote has been a target for hackers in recent weeks, with quite a lot of video footage surfacing showing off the popular PC game World of Warcraft taking some advantage of the device's functionality.

Blizzard game designer Jonathan LeCraft recently spoke to Pro-G about the possibility of the game one day being married to Wii, officially.

"You really do need a keyboard to play WoW," said LeCraft "I've seen some mods where people have hooked up WoW to their Wii. When I saw that I was like, well, that's got to be pretty easy to PVP against, honestly. It's not something we're looking at right now."

LeCraft insisted that Blizzard has no plans to port the game to platforms such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and on the topic of continuing the studio's other franchises, such as Starcraft and Diablo, LeCraft said, "I think we have the capacity for another one," but was just as quiet on whether any development is underway.

I would certainly buy a Wii version of World of Warcraft, especially if it has Burning Crusade embedded into it. However, if they charge $20 per month to play on the Wii version like on the PC version, then there is no chance that I will get it.

A California radio station has dismissed 10 of its employees after a woman who had taken part in a water-drinking contest it held died.
The KDND 107.9 station in Sacramento sacked the hosts of its morning show and other members of staff.

The show had challenged listeners to drink as much water as they could to win a Nintendo Wii video game system.

One participant - Jennifer Strange - later died as a result of drinking too much water, initial tests showed.

Ms Strange, 28, said she wanted to win the game - "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" game - for her children.

A work colleague said Ms Strange had complained her head was hurting hours after the contest and was going home.

She was found dead on Friday at her house in Rancho Cordova.

The Sacramento County coroner later said preliminary autopsy findings suggested she had died of water intoxication.

The county's sheriff said that there did not appear to be grounds for a criminal investigation.

"It's not as if [Ms Strange] was somehow in their custody and they had a role to care for her," John McGinness is quoted as saying by the Sacramento Bee newspaper.

"Rather, it was an invitation to a contest that was clearly ill-advised. She was exercising her free will."

New confirmation of Red Steel 2

Red Steel 2's definitely on the way if you believe this new confirmation on another Ubisoft-owned website.

January 16, 2007 - Late last year, Ubisoft's Paris studio, the team behind Red Steel, advertised the position of a Senior Game Designer for "the continuation of the Red Steel project" on their website.

If that wasn't a good enough confirmation that a sequel is in the works, then today's revelation on the Official Red Steel Enthusiast Community website should be convincing.

The Ubisoft-owned site's administrator, the 'Sensei', writes in the final post before the site's closure, "...if any student think he anywhere near ready for Red Steel 2...Get Ready to Do My Laundry!"

It's only a matter of time before Ubisoft officially announces the project, so be sure to stick by for more. In the meantime, you can check out our review of the original game, here.

Wii hits Xbox at the tills
Asher Moses
January 18, 2007

It took the Nintendo Wii just three weeks to surpass the Xbox 360's sales in Australia for the entire fourth quarter of 2006, figures from market watcher GfK show.

The quarterly figures, released by games analyst Daniel Morse, show Nintendo sold 51,744 Wiis, whereas Microsoft sold 45,036 Xbox 360s.

However, since the Wii only went on sale from December 8, its figures relate only to the three weeks to December 31, whereas the Xbox 360 numbers pertain to the entire three-month quarter.

But the ageing PlayStation 2, which has been on sale for seven years, remains the console king with 122,639 units sold.

The figures are not surprising when one considers the differing price points. PS2, nearing the end of its life cycle, can be had for $199, while the Xbox 360 and Wii sell for about $600 and $399 respectively.

Microsoft is quick to argue that, despite its lower sales figure, the higher price of the Xbox 360 means that it doesn't have to sell as many units to derive the same revenue.

But most retailers interviewed said the Wii was selling as fast as Nintendo could supply them.

Steve Wilson, managing director of EB Games, said: "Every retailer just sold what they had.

"The Wii was constrained by inventory. We couldn't get all the stock we wanted," he said.

But the Wii's results were not totally unexpected, he said.

"The product only launched on [midnight] December 7, so it's not unusual for there to be quite large demand for a new console at launch, and you add to that that it was Christmas."

A Nintendo spokesman, Vispi Bhopti, said the Wii shortage occurred because Nintendo insisted on a simultaneous global launch, and it produced as many consoles as possible before the launch date.

"We made a commitment to our fans that we would release this within a short, global timeframe," he said.

"Had there been more stock available to us we certainly would have been able to fulfil more of the demand.

"But, regardless, we see this as a long-term product and we don't measure our success entirely on day one, week one, month one."

Sony's next console, the PlayStation 3, has been available overseas for some time, but its Australian launch is scheduled for March.

Recent reports suggest that it could be delayed even further, and its price of close to $1000 - largely the result of the included Blu-ray disc drive - is expected to initially limit its installation base.

FROM COUCH POTATO TO Wii Muscleman :D
Asher Moses
January 17, 2007 - 12:27PM

Video games and weight loss are rarely seen side-by-side - unless you are referring to Nintendo's newest games console, the Wii, which has enticed gamers the world over to get up off the couch.

One Wii owner has reported that, in just six weeks of play, he had dropped 2 per cent of his body fat rating, thanks to the console's motion-sensitive control scheme that rewards active movement when directing in-game characters.

Mickey DeLorenzo, a 25-year-old living in Philadelphia, began his "Wii Sports Experiment" in early December last year, pledging to spend 30 minutes a day over six weeks playing Wii sports.

He would strive to keep his other activities and eating habits constant.

On Monday when the six weeks were over, DeLorenzo updated his website, wiinintendo.net, with a detailed analysis of his results (http://wiinintendo.net/2007/01/15/wii-sports-experiment-results/).

"I lost 9lbs! [four kilograms]," he wrote, which he was impressed with because he had not fluctuated from his original weight of 82 kilograms in two years, and made no effort to change his diet.

"Also, this experiment took place during the holiday season, where I ate holiday dinners like I normally would and drank what I would normally would have drank."

DeLorenzo used a digital body fat caliper, recording a drop in his body fat rating of 2 per cent from a starting figure of 19 per cent.

His waist measurement fell from 87.6 centimetres to 78.7 centimetres.

"According to The American Council on Exercise, I went from being in the 'acceptable' category to being in the 'fitness' category," he said.

Before and after photographs posted on his website showed a marked reduction in fat around the stomach and chin. The increase in abdomen muscle definition was clear.

Being an avid gamer, DeLorenzo's secondary goal was to determine which of the five Wii Sports games - tennis, boxing, baseball, bowling or golf - helped to burn the most calories. He measured this using a BioTrainer exercise monitor.

Boxing was found to be the most efficient calorie burner: "I burned an average of 125 calories during a 15 minute period," he wrote.

Tennis was second at 92 calories per 15 minutes and bowling was third at 77 calories. DeLorenzo said he didn't "get around to" conducting measurements for the baseball and golf games.

DeLorenzo said that it was important to make an effort to be active while playing the games.

"I moved my feet, I used full body motion, and I swung my arms to mimic the real thing," he said.

"If you just stand there and make small moves or sit on the couch and play, I don't think you'll [see] much if any results regarding exercise."

He planned to continue the experiment, with the goal of trimming a further 3 per cent from his body fat rating.

I picked up Wario Ware today. So far it's lots of fun. I did say "huh?" at a few of the games; not because they are odd (something I expect from a Wario Ware game), but because I couldn't figure out what movement I needed to make with the Wii-mote. Luckily I caught on quickly. There's quite a few ways to hold the controller, most of which are fun.

You'll breeze through the single player, but you'll definitely want to play the stages a couple times more. It's typical Wario Ware; bizarre mini-games, short, repetitive replay value (playing stages again and again), unlockable stuff.

Worth the $80? Yes. If you can get it cheaper, even better. It's a definite distraction from my other games, and welcomed as my interest in the console was waning.

DIEHARD

Mario's last hurrah on GameCube is now coming out in April -- for Wii.

Fans have been rabid for Super Paper Mario ever since it sneaked into Nintendo's press materials at E3 2006. The game is a new Mario platformer with 2.5D gameplay using the same flat paper style as the Paper Mario RPGs.

Though originally planned for GameCube, the title disappeared from release lists toward the end of 2006, and all signs pointed to it being ported over to Wii. Now, the April issue of Nintendo's official magazine, Nintendo Power, says the game will indeed debut on Wii in April 2007.

The magazine mentions that the game is broken into chapters (much like the other Paper Mario games) and that each chapter introduces new platforming elements that revolutionize the genre. They also note that the game's visuals have been dramatically improved since the E3 showing (and, presumably, since the playable demo at last year's World Hobby Fair).

Sony, the builder of world's most powerful gaming console, the Playstation 3, apparently is as of late taking on a condescending tone towards the apparently more successful Nintendo Wii.

"Wii could be considered an impulse buy more that anything else," said Dave Karraker, a spokesman for Sony Computer entertainment of America, "but we believe the PS3 will be the console to attract hardcore, committed gamers, while Wii will do little beyond satisfying new and casual players."

It's common knowledge the Playstation 3 is significantly more powerful than the "tiny" Wii. However, Nintendo has proved [marketing] brains prevail over [hardware] brawn.

"Nintendo came at things sideways ? they made stuff that?s silly and fun," said Jeff Gerstmann, senior editor of GameSpot, quoted by NYP. "It has created a new style of gaming."

In that way Karraker is right saying "the Wii did not belong in the same category as the more powerful PlayStation 3". That's exactly the Wii's advantage. Perrin Kaplan, vice president for marketing at Nintendo of America, said the Wii was aimed at changing the perception of what kinds of games adults like to play. The console, she said, "has turned it all upside down."

"That?s absolutely inaccurate," she said to Sony's allegation that the Wii only appeared to be in higher demand because there had been fewer shipments of it.

GameSpot estimates some 76 game releases for the Wii in 2007, compared with 127 for PlayStation 3.

Because of the huge success registered on the market with its tiny console, Nintendo decided to increase the monthly production to at least 1 million units, in order to satisfy strong demand. Sony's Dave Karraker started off by stating 100,000 PS3s are shipping each week in the US, and are selling out.

While reporting its fiscal performance of the past quarter, the AP reports Nintendo shared that it met its original forecast of shipping 4 million units by the end of 2006, and that it still intends to have 7 million manufactured by the end of this fiscal year, which ends on March 31st.

In order to meet such a forecast, Nintendo says it's increasing production capacity to over a million Wii consoles per month. At such a pace, by the end of this year, over 18 million consoles would be produced. To give scale to such a figure, the Nintendo Gamecube sold 22 million units over the course of six years. Clearly, Nintendo's aggressive pacing shows they expect better success with their latest console.

John Pospisil of Tech.Blorge assesses correctly Karraker's comments when he writes, "To me it sounds like a PR hack trying to put a positive spin on a situation, which is anything but positive for Sony. I guess that?s what he?s paid to do."

Not to mention, it's quite impolite to condescendingly label all Nintendo Wii buyers as "impulse buyers," who, more or less, aren't capable of appreciating the much more powerful Playstation 3. Snatching the most powerful console ever would seem more like an impulse buy to me. I think Sony's comments, all in all, will have a negative impact on the company.

I think Sonys just a little jealous of Nintendo's brilliance with the Wii. Im sure Nintendo are very happy with their 'casual' 4 million buyers in a few months. Nintendo has introduced a new way of playing games and there is going to be a continual demand for what they have produced. Sony have lost out big time with their console, the delays and 'copied' features have put alot of people off them and i would imagine anyone who has an xbox or wii wont be investing in a ps3.

WWE ready to rumble on Wii, DS

THQ confirms plans to bring wrestling franchise to Nintendo's systems, reaffirms first PS3 installment in series is on the way.

By Brendan Sinclair (http://au.gamespot.com/users/Polybren/), GameSpot (http://www.gamespot.com/) Posted Feb 2, 2007 10:55 am PT

Traditionally, THQ hasn't been shy about spreading its WWE-licensed games around to different platforms. The company has made games based on the professional wrestling company's in-ring offerings for the PlayStation 2, the N-Gage, and everything in between.

However, 2006 was a fairly light year for the company's WWE license because its only major offering was WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2007 for the PS2, PlayStation Portable, and Xbox 360. A PlayStation 3 version had been announced but was later canceled because THQ said the series would debut on Sony's next-generation system in late '07.

The PS3 isn't the only system looking forward to its first WWE game because THQ confirmed plans to step into the ring on the Wii and DS. In an investor conference call, the publisher said it would be releasing WWE products on Nintendo's latest systems sometime in its next fiscal year, which runs from April 2007 through March 2008.

There was no indication if the Nintendo games would fall under the SmackDown! vs. RAW banner, or if they would be separate series, as was done with WWE titles on the GameCube and Game Boy Advance.

Wii Outsells Competition in January

And amazingly, it wasn't even a close race.
The NPD hardware figures for last month are in, and it looks like all the hub-bub about the Wii being really popular has translated into big sales. According to Nintendo, 453,503 of the hard-to-find Wii consoles were purchased last month, which is an impressive 33% more than the widely available Xbox 360, which sold through more than 294k systems. The PS3 brought up the rear with 244k sold in January.

Nintendo's press release calling everyone's attention to this fact is below.

NINTENDO NEWS: WII ARE NO. 1

Feb. 21, 2007 - Nintendo's new Wii? has become the best-selling video game system of any kind in January in the United States, and the fastest-selling new-generation home system. According to the independent NPD Group, Wii sold through 435,503 systems to customers in its January reporting period. By comparison, that's 70 percent higher than any other new video game system in its first January of availability during the last 10 years.

In addition, Nintendo DS? once again triumphed as the top-selling portable system, with nearly 239,000 hardware and more than 2.4 million software units sold. In combination, Nintendo game systems accounted for nearly as many unit sales (46 percent of the total market) as those of all other manufacturers combined.

The continuing success of Wii and DS demonstrates that the public has embraced Nintendo's philosophy of entertaining current gamers in new ways, and expanding gaming for the masses. Four of the top 10 best-selling games in January were for Nintendo systems, both home and portable.

The only limit on Nintendo's success is the availability of Wii and DS systems, which continue to sell out as fast as Nintendo can ship them. Shipments are being made continuously to feed the huge demand around the country.

I bought SSX Blur today and it looks like a very hard game. A lot of people have been complaining about the controls, and rightfully so IF you thought the game was pick up and play. The controls need to be mastered before the true greatness of the game comes through. The uber moves I'm sceptical off. Drawing patterns quickly sounds quite hard (I haven't tried it yet). Using the nunchuck for movement (actually turning the nunchuck) at first feels unnatural and it made me wonder why they just didn't have the character movement mapped to the actual analogue stick (in a sense it is. You use the analogue still to control the speed of your character and if you want slight left/right movements), but after a while the turning with the nunchuck feels natural and very awesome. Pulling off basic tricks is also a breeze. You just move the wii remote left or right to spin or up and down to flip. I haven't attempted any more complex tricks. If you crash out you shake the controllers.

So yeah, the controls are DEFINITELY NOT pick up and play. They take time to master but it's worth it if you are willing to persist. If not, I'd stick to another racer like Excite Truck.

More positive news for Nintendo in its home country, Japan.

Reuters has reported the latest console sales figures in Japan for the four weeks leading up to June 24, revealing that Nintendo sold through 270,974 Wii consoles, as compared to the PS3's sales of 41,628. Microsoft, on the other hand, sold only 17,616 Xbox 360 consoles.

This has brought Wii's lead over the PS3 to 6 to 1 - an increase from 4 to 1 in April and 5 to 1 in May - helping Nintendo to become one of the top 10 Japanese companies.

E3 2007: Smash Bros. Brawl Date Set
Find out when the most-anticipated Wii game will be released.

US, July 11, 2007 - Nintendo has officially announced the release date of Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii. The game will release on December 3, 2007 -- later in the year than some thought (a few expected this to be the game to go up against Halo 3 or GTA4), but this gives room to the slew of other great titles from Nintendo for the system.

Unfortunately, Nintendo spoke of little else about the game -- a short clip of Super Smash Bros. Brawl was shown at the Nintendo E3 2007 conference (which looked amazing, a nice update on the classic look of the series), but the short discussion seems to be all Nintendo plans to show of the game. The team did not speak on the conditions or status of online play (which the company announced as planned when the title was first announced but has frustratingly not commented on since), and aside from the use of four different controller options, there were no specifics to be gleaned from the speech.

Still, December 3rd should be on your calendar no matter if you know nothing but this latest info or have been following the game's every update on the Super Smash Bros. Dojo website -- it promises to rock. We will have any more info on the game as soon as we get it from Nintendo.

Wii tops Nintendo DS in US sales for July

Nintendo's successful streak continued in the US during July, with the Wii and Nintendo DS nabbing first and second places in hardware sales.

August 24, 2007 - Nintendo's Wii was the best-selling piece of gaming hardware in the United States for the month of July with sales of 425,000 units, according to figures released by the NPD Group, which revealed that the console managed to dethrone the Nintendo DS ? by 20,000 units.

Following the Nintendo DS's second-placing with 405,000 units was the PlayStation 2, which topped sales of 222,000. The PSP wasn't far behind with sales of 214,000 units, followed by the Xbox 360 with 170,000, the PlayStation 3 with 159,000, and the Game Boy Advance with 87,000.

Referring to competitors' recent price cuts, Nintendo said in a statement, "Wii emerged as the month?s best-selling video game system of any type in the United States and achieved its highest weekly sales rates since December, despite pricing shifts in the industry."

Nintendo managed to finish with three games in the top ten for July, with Wii Play the best at #3 with sales of 278,000 units, Mario Party 8 at #5 with 177,000, and Pokemon Diamond at #7 with 144,000. EA's NCAA Football 08 for the Xbox 360 grabbed top spot with sales of 397,000 units, followed by Activision's Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks The 80s at second place with 339,000.

Nintendo added in its statement that it remained the top US game publisher for the sixth consecutive month.

Wii Overtakes Xbox360 In WorldWide Sales

Back in the days of the N64 and GameCube, if you said to some one that Nintendo would once again be back on top, you would be laughed at. If you said it on a gaming forum, you would be laughed at and either given some rediculous forum title or be banned.

Well, the impossible has come to pass according to the Japanese financial publication, Financial Times. This publication has collected the sales data of every region's sales data, collected by Enterbrain in Japan, NPD Group in the United States, and GfK in Europe respectively. The report issued by the Financial Times states that to date, there have been 9 million Wiis, 8.9 million Xbox360s, and 3.7 million PS3s sold worldwide. This marks the first time in almost two decades that Nintendo has climbed to the top of the worldwide video game market.

One analyst attributed the quick sales of the Wii to it selling strong in all three major regions, compared to the Xbox 360, which only sells strong in 2 major regions, despite the full year's head start it had on Nintendo's console.

The combined success of the DS and Wii has allowed Nintendo to skyrocket past Sony and embed itself deep within the list of top 10 most valuable companies. Furthermore, the success is likely to continue as the Wii has the highest purchase intent among consumers, which is according to a report released by BrandIntel.

The games probably get boring alone, but then, it's a bit boring when a friend comes over and you kick their butt on a game because they have never played it. Definitely filling a niche! I rarely have anyone over to play such games with though, so 360 for me, with Halo 3 and Halo Wars.

Nintendo to launch Wii workout board

http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/300_wiimat1,0.jpg

Japanese video game creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, displays the new balancing board controller for the Nintendo's Wii console. Photo: AFP

Couch potatoes beware: Wii owners will be able to get an even more vigorous workout from December when Nintendo launches a new fitness balance board for its hit video game console.

The "Wii Fit" board and software can be used for exercising, sports and games including yoga, virtual snowboarding, ski-jumping and aerobics to help users battle the bulge in their living rooms.

The board, which looks like a set of bathroom scales, is the latest salvo in Nintendo's battle to widen the appeal of video games beyond just teenagers locked away in their bedrooms.

Nintendo announced Wednesday that the package would go on sale in Japan from December 1 for 8,800 yen ($US75). Launch dates for other countries were not announced.

Last year's launch of the Wii and its motion-sensitive controller - which can be used like a tennis racket, golf club or bowling ball - triggered a slew of reports of aching backs, sore shoulders and what has been dubbed "Wii elbow."

Nintendo said it discouraged players weighing more than 136 kilos from using the new balance board.

The company also announced its would launch "Wii Ware" - a new service to download games and other software via the internet - from next March.

"We know that any player will get bored with any type of game console," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told a packed press conference near Tokyo.

"In order not to have the Wii end up as a temporary phenomenon, we need to enlarge the gaming population," he said.

Iwata said he wanted to expand the usage of the Wii beyond the home and into the online world.

Although 51 percent of Japanese households have broadband internet access, only 40 percent of Wii users go online with their console, he said.

Nintendo is enjoying huge success with the Wii, far outselling rival Sony with its PlayStation 3.

While Sony put the emphasis on chip power and ultra-realistic graphics for the latest addition to the PlayStation series, Nintendo opted to develop an easy-to-use console that would appeal to a wider audience.

Kyoto-based Nintendo announced it would launch a total of 70 brand new software titles in the coming months for the Wii, including "Super Mario Galaxy" and "Mario and Sonic at Beijing Olympics."

But the long-awaited "Smash Brothers X" will be delayed by several months until January 24.

The price of Nintendo shares soared 4.1 per cent as investors cheered news that the new fitness game would be available in time for the crucial year-end shopping period.

Nintendo, which started out in 1889 making playing cards, overtook Sony earlier this year in market value despite the fact that in terms of revenue it is about eight times smaller than the Japanese consumer electronics icon.

In an effort to catch up with Nintendo's Wii, Sony recently announced it would slash the PlayStation 3's price by 10 percent and launch a slimmed-down version in Japan and Europe this month.

SONIC IS IN SMASH BROS!

Nintendo has announced at its fall conference in Japan today what some have long hoped for: SEGA's iconic Sonic the Hedgehog will be among the star-studded line up of playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Brawl will increase the sales of Wii's tremendously... I can see it becoming one of the most sold video games of all time.

Online play, Snake and Sonic as playable characters, Co-Op adventure mode... Excited much?

LOL @ the Wii fit...

Yea Smash will be huge. But I'm dying for Mario Galaxy!

This WiiWare thing really gets me interested. Apparenly Nintendo has already received 1000 proposals from dev companies.

Also Wii has received the most 3rd party support in the 3rd quarter. :woot:

No new Zelda games for the Wii yet.

They are releasing a game called Link's Cross Bow Challenge or something bundled with a zapper attachment to your wii remote.

There is a new Zelda game on DS, it is a true sequel to Wind Waker on Gamecube and has had fantastic reviews!

Thanks Diehard, might have to pick it up. My DS is just collecting dust since I became bored with Mario Kart.

hugebrianfan: these wiis are pretty awesome especially when people are over and you fire up the multiplayer games like NBA or Wii Sports. Apparently there is also a new Smackdown! game coming out on the Wii, interesting to see how they pull it off. Also you will NEED to get Guitar Hero.

Nintendo Australia has confirmed that Link's Crossbow Training will be debuting in Australia on December 13, bundled with the Wii Zapper for $49.95.

The game features almost 30 fast-paced shooting gallery stages, allowing payers to shoot everything from stationary targets to hordes of enemies - all in a world rendered by the Twilight Princess engine.

A decent price but when you factor in the actual exchange rate not really Alot of industries must be making a mint atm.

But $50...yep that'll be good. I want my Link crossbow!!!

$50 is a bit of a rip considering it's just a throwaway game and a bit of plastic. I'm still not convinced on the design either. It doesn't look enjoyable to use.

First ever Zelda game without Zelda in the title?

Well there was the NES title The Adventure of Link but that was still labelled Zelda II.

Nup, that belongs to Link: The Faces Of Evil but it's best we forget about it.

That and Crossbow training aren't really considered part of The Legend of Zelda series though. They're just spin-off titles.

At least the crossbow Link game would be made by Nintendo.

No one considers that CDI garbage part of the Zelda legacy, so The Adventure of Link is the close as youll get. Though it still bore the Zelda tag.

No doubt the Link crossbow set is a gimmick and hopefully the game will be something a tad deeper than Dunk Hunt or the can shooting game on Wario.

They need to promote Link more, because a lot of foolish people believe he is actually Zelda, which is pretty disgraceful.

I was thinking of buying Link's Crossbow Challenge, but I am under the assumption it will be fairly basic. You know like Wii Sports basic. I needed a new game for the DS so I ended up getting Phantom Hourglass yesterday.

If anyone can put up a review of LCC (if they buy it), I would very much appreciate it.:)

The main game I'm playing on my Wii is Smash Bros Melee at the moment haha. Apart from Twilight Princess and Wii Sports, no other title has really catched my eye. Some good games coming out Q1 2008.

Me n my bro have a nintendo wii. And we have created Mii's on there. So now we want to play other Mii's or meet other Mii's from different people online, so i tried putting a Wii character in the parade thingy but it keeps saying : "it looks like nobody is here" or something like that. Does this mean we have done something wrong, or does it just eman we have to wait until someone comes?

Thanks in advance!!
