Burleigh Bears: Gains and losses for season 2021
https://www.qrl.com.au/news/2021/03/21/burleigh-bears-gains-and-losses-for-season-2021/

Defending premiers Burleigh Bears head into the 2021 season with some big shoes to fill, after star halfback Jamal Fogarty was signed up by Gold Coast Titans last year.

The 2019 Petero Civoniceva Medal winner has subsequently been named as co-captain of the NRL club in a fitting reward for his talent and standing in the game both on the off the field.

Despite this key loss, the Bears have for the most part retained many of the key personnel who helped frame their success, with coach Rick Stone adding to his squad with important signings.

Exciting half Guy Hamilton has moved across from Souths Logan Magpies after helping steer Runaway Bay to the QTOP Gold Coast A Grade title last year.

Former Tweed Seagulls skipper John Palavi has switched over to join with the Bears this season and will be a key forward presence for the team; as will NRL experienced prop Lloyd Perrett who was on the books at Wynnum Manly Seagulls last season.

The Burleigh Bears will travel to Davies Park Sunday to take on Souths Logan Magpies in their Round 1 fixture.

Burleigh Bears 2021 gains and losses

Historic rivalry in Bears’ favour
http://www.gcbulletin.com.au

Jamal Fogarty playing for the Tweed Seagulls.

THE last time Tweed knocked off Burleigh in the Intrust Super Cup it was Jamal Fogarty steering the ship for the Seagulls.

The Gold Coast Titans cocaptain and Bears premiership-winning halfback was pulling the strings against his future club when Tweed romped to a 50-4 win in Round 12, 2015.

Fogarty joined Burleigh the following season and the Bears went on to defeat Redcliffe in the grand final.

Since 2015 it’s been all oneway traffic in Burleigh’s favour

– the Bears winning the next eight Cup encounters between the fierce rivals.

It’s been a long time between drinks for the boys from Tweed, who have been swept by the Bears each year by an average margin of 19 points.

In the most recent full season, Burleigh’s 2019 premiership-winning campaign, the Bears rolled to 32-4 and 42-6 thrashings at Tweed’s expense.

That history and more makes for an enthralling narrative ahead of Saturday’s Rivalry Round meeting between the two clubs.

Tweed captain Lamar Liolevave laughed when told about the recent record between the sides.

“They’ve had bragging rights since 2015 – that’s pretty funny, I didn’t know that,” Liolevave said.

“For as long as I’ve been at Tweed I’ve never beaten Burleigh and I think I’ve played every game since 2017.

“We’ve come close a few times. I just want to win one.

“I was even messaging some of their boys saying ‘give us the win’.”

Despite their recent dire record against the Bears, Tweed will enter the Round 4 clash as an in-form favourite in the eyes of most pundits.

Ben Woolf’s side sits in fifth spot with a 2-1 record and feeling confident following a 40-26 win over Souths Logan last weekend.

Conversely, Burleigh stumbled to 1-2 when left embarrassed by the previously winless Brisbane Tigers, falling 50-10 at Langlands Park in what was the club’s worst Intrust Super Cup loss since a 46-4 defeat to the Mackay Cutters in Round 19, 2015.

“I’ve played at Tweed for a while now and I know Burleigh

– it doesn’t matter how they played the week before, they always turn up against us,” Liolevave said.

“They’ll come out and try to bully us. We’re a younger team.

“Hopefully we can play our game and go out there and get the result.”

Eyes will be on young Seagulls fullback Jayden Campbell, who swapped from Burleigh in pre-season.

Campbell had his best game of the season in the win against Souths Logan last weekend.

“He’s definitely a talent and one to look out for,” Liolevave said. “Now that he has his confidence we saw last week what he can do. He put on a display for us.”

Kick-off is 3.30pm at Piggabeen Sporting Complex.

The Burleigh Bears are coming off their best performance of the season, a comprehensive 36-0 win over the previously unbeaten Norths Devils.

Burleigh’s Sami Sauiluma was at his destructive best in the win, crossing for a hat-trick of tries.
For Ipswich, new coach Keiron Lander will go in search of his second win of the season, after a narrow loss to Tweed Seagulls last weekend.

The Jets will have plenty to play for, with key prop Tyson Lofipo lining up for this 200th match in the green and white.
Bears second-rower Hayden Schwass will line up for this 100th Cup game for the club and 102nd overall (including two national finals).

Dolphins deliver in come from behind win over Bears
http://www.qrl.com.au

The Redcliffe Dolphins made it five wins in a row and jumped into the top four with an entertaining 32-24 victory over the Burleigh Bears at Moreton Daily Stadium on Saturday night.

In a clash between two of the form sides in the competition, the Dolphins could not have started more poorly, with a dropped ball from the kick-off leading to a try in the opening minute for the Bears to centre Josh Rogers.

Dolphins five-eighth Sean O'Sullivan was the man who committed the early error, but he soon redeemed himself with a neat grubber kick which Jeremy Hawkins chased and planted down to score Redcliffe's opening points in the eighth minute.

Burleigh were favouring their left side in attack and scored a second try down this corridor midway through the first half.

A short-side play put Jonus Pearson away down the wing, who then passed inside to Rogers who went in for his second try.

In the next set, the Bears tried their hand down the right side and were successful with Allan Lockwood scoring off a kick to open up a 14-6 lead.

In a half where both sides made minimal errors, the Dolphins had the final say when Preston Riki showed some neat footwork near the line and went over to cut the deficit to 14-12 at half-time.

The two teams traded blows early in the second half. Livewire fullback Trai Fuller, who made a try-saving tackle in the first half, put Viliami Vailea away who then ran half the field to regain the lead for the Dolphins.

Only a few minutes later, the Bears went back in front 20-18 with a long-range try of their own, with Tanah Boyd starting and finishing the play.

The Dolphins levelled the scores in the 63rd minute with a penalty goal, and then in the next 10 minutes took control of the game.

Back-to back tries to Sheldon Pitama and Fuller put the home side up by two converted tries with less than 10 minutes to play.

The Bears weren't done with yet and Pearson scored in the corner with three minutes to go, but an unsuccessful sideline conversion ended all hope of a comeback.

Dolphins coach Adam Mogg was proud of his team's performance, particularly after an early ankle injury to Setu Tu forced a positional reshuffle.

Next week, the Dolphins will face off against Tweed Seagulls.

NOT QUITE ‘DON’ YET
http://www.gcbulleting.com.au

THE first-grade career of Gold Coast’s all-time leading tryscorer Anthony Don may be on its final legs but early bird fans at Cbus Super Stadium were treated to what could prove his final try at the ground on Saturday afternoon.

Lining up on the wing for Burleigh in an Intrust Super Cup curtain-raiser, 33-yearold Don soared high above the Papua New Guinea Hunters to score his first try of 2021 in a 34-6 win.

Preston Campbell will always be the king of Cbus Super Stadium but fan favourite Don, who scored 30 of his 85 NRL tries at the ground, deserves to go down as its crown prince.

Burleigh coach Rick Stone said the strength of Don’s performance would give Titans coach Justin Holbrook something to think about.

“There’s still a little bit left in Anthony Don,” Stone said.

“With his consistency, experience and awareness, those are valuable assets to every team.”

If Holbrook turns to Don in any of the three remaining home games in 2021 he will have a chance to catch David Mead (32) as the ground’s all-time leading tryscorer.

Don’s fellow Gold Coast Titans teammates Tanah Boyd and Jonus Pearson also played well for Burleigh on the back of a strong platform laid by forwards Luke Page, Jeff Lynch and John Palavi.

The Bears kept the Hunters pinned in their own half for much of the match, pleasing coach Stone.

“I was disappointed in our defence last week but our physicality in ‘D’ was a big improvement,” he said.

Burleigh Bears v Brisbane Tigers
Match: Bears v Tigers
ROUND 12 - FRIDAY 23RD JULY

Venue:Pizzey Park, Gold Coast

Head-to-head: Burleigh Bears 26, Tigers 22, drawn 2
Hashtags: #intrustsupercup #BEARSvTIGES

The Burleigh Bears will host Brisbane Tigers in a rare Friday night game in the Intrust Super Cup and will be keen to turn around the result from the last time the teams met when the Tigers clicked into gear at home and stunned the visiting Bears 50-10.
Since that game however, the fortunes of the two teams has diverged, with the Bears winning their past three games, while the Tigers have lost their past seven games to be in the midst of their worst ever Cup losing run.
In the Tigers favour this weekend however is the fact they have won five of the past seven games between the two sides at Pizzey Park.
Always strong at home, Burleigh have won their past eight home games and will aiming to inflict the fourth straight away loss on the Tigers.
Sami Sauiluma has been named in the centres for the Bears in what is set to be his 98th Cup game and his 100th game for the club, a tally which also includes his two NRL State Championship appearances.
Match official Dan Munroe was in the middle for his 50th Cup game last weekend in the Activate! Queensland Country Week match in Atherton.
