TWEED Heads Seagulls are on the lookout for a new development manager following Ezra Howe’s departure to the Gold Coast Titans.

Howe was recently announced as the NRL club’s new head of recruitment, having gathered experience in past roles including with the Canberra Raiders.

Howe is also the Junior Kiwis head coach and New Zealand senior team assistant coach. He will continue in those positions.

The Seagulls are set to begin advertising for a replacement shortly.

Tweed Heads Seagulls take lessons out of Souths Logan Intrust Super Cup pre-season trial
https://www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/

TWEED Heads have emerged from a mixed opening night of Intrust Super Cup trials with a clear direction of where they need to improve to be finals competitors this season.

As well as under-18 and under-20 fixtures, the Seagulls and Souths Logan squared off in an ISC doubleheader on Saturday night designed to showcase their entire playing lists.

Tweed won the earlier ISC contest – unofficially the lower-end game – by 24-6 to give fans at Piggabeen Sports Complex reason to smile but they were outclassed in the later match when most of the bigger names rolled into action.

The Magpies scored the first 16 points of the match before Tweed got on the board through impressive back Elijah Nicholas, who has converted from rugby union. That try did not swing the momentum for long though, with Souths Logan running away 26-6 winners.

“The first game we were pretty happy with. The second game we were probably disappointed in some areas and we obviously lost on the scoreboard but some of the things that we weren’t doing well aren’t going to be too difficult to fix,” said Tweed assistant coach Darryl Fisher.

“I think defensively there was probably just a little lack of recognition of how to manage the speed of the ruck, especially against a bigger side.

“Some of them got it and some of them didn’t quite get it so if we can get everyone on the same page it will be pretty easy to change that.

“And a lot of difficulties we were having were just choices by ourselves that led to errors. I think we had 10 sets where we probably failed to complete in the first three tackles so we were giving up a lot of possession to a big side and that just makes it tough.

“It’s not too hard to change that.”

Tweed have a camp in Byron Bay next weekend before facing Burleigh in a February 23 trial.

Several players from the earlier game put forward cases for more opportunities, with Bayley Faull and Keb Vaetoe among those to impress Fisher.

Fullback Jack Mackin, who is dual registered with Runaway Bay, had a mixed night under lights but Fisher is under no illusions about what he can bring to the club.

“I coached against him in A-grade a couple of years ago and he gave me nightmares a few times then,” he said.

First win just a sample for Gulls
http://www,gcbulletin.com.au

TWEED Seagulls treated their fans to a promising first showing this Intrust Super Cup season but the real test comes tomorrow.

The Seagulls were done a favour in the 2019 fixture by getting to host Papua New Guinea before the Hunters’ all-new list had the chance to gel but Round 2 sees them take on Townsville, also at Piggabeen Sports Complex.

Tweed have a shocking head-to-head record against the Blackhawks, who have been perennial frontrunners since joining the competition in 2015.

If coach Ben Woolf’s side can push them tomorrow – or even beat them – it would truly show the Seagulls mean business this year.

“They have always got a strong roster and a strong team and we haven’t had much success against them previously so it will be a real tough one,” Woolf said.

Titans enforcer Keegan Hipgrave will return from a hamstring injury via Tweed, replacing Jaleel Seve.

The Seagulls will be without stand-in co-captain John Palavi, however, after he copped a one-game suspension. Bailey Faull will take his place.

Tweed pack a mighty punch
http://www.gcbulletin.com.au

BURLEIGH coach Jimmy Lenihan has declared Tweed have the Intrust Super Cup’s best forward pack right now as a high-quality local derby looms.

The Seagulls are one of four undefeated teams after two rounds and are coming off an excellent 24-16 win over Townsville.

Burleigh meanwhile bounced back from a first-up loss to thrash Ipswich 42-8 at their last start.

“They are flying at the moment, Tweed. It will be a very, very tough, hard game,” Lenihan said of the 2pm kickoff tomorrow at Pizzey Park.

“They have probably got the best forward pack on the market at the moment.

“They are going well with (John) Palavi, Keegan Hipgrave, Leilani Latu and Kalani Going so they are certainly a big, mobile, aggressive pack.”

Lenihan may be underselling his own big men though, with a starting pack to match any rival in the form of Luke Page, Pat Politoni, Jack Buchanan, Hayden Schwass, Jacob Hind and Sam Coster.

The Bears mentor said his side were still refining their game; it’s a theme that has helped him reach his 10th year as an ISC coach, with a contract already in place for 2020 too.

“The game is constantly evolving and the coaches are always smarter and cleverer so if you’re not changing what you are doing all of the time, you become predictable and people understand what you are doing,” Lenihan said.

Titans 18th man Mitch Rein is at this stage expected to line up for Tweed, who will be missing the promoted Ryley Jacks.

Utility Jack Cook has been named to play at halfback, with Luke Jurd on the bench as another playmaking option.

For Seagulls coach Ben Woolf, it’s an exciting prospect to have a team that appears capable of contending for the play-offs.

Across the past five years in charge at the Titans under-20s and then Tweed, Woolf has mainly led squads more in a development phase.

“It’s only Round 2 obviously but they are showing good signs early,” he said.

“A lot of those guys like Kalani Going, Kirk Murphy, Jack Cook and Shane Gillham, they have had 12 months’ experience and now they are going better so that’s the pleasing thing: As opposed to having recruited a new side, those guys have shown improvement.”

The Seagulls will be out to break their second noted losing streak in as many weeks when they take on Burleigh Bears in the Intrust Super Cup rivalry round clash at Pizzey Park.

The Ben Woolf-coached Seagulls ended their seven-match losing run against Townsville at Piggabeen Sports Complex last Sunday in their first victory against the Blackhawks.

The away side haven’t won against their arch-rivals since 2015, with the Bears winning the past six games between the two side, including the last three played at Pizzey Park.

The Gulls will be without halfback Ryley Jacks, who has been called into the Titans line-up, with utility Jack Cook named at halfback.
The Bears, who have won four of their past five home games, have a strong contingency of forwards that includes skipper Luke Page, Pat Politoni and current Titans Morgan Boyle and Jai Whitbread who present a strong challenge to the Gulls pack.

DERBY DAY: Seagulls out to end its Burleigh losing streak
https://www.tweeddailynews.com.au/

RUGBY LEAGUE: Tweed goes into this Sunday's grudge match having lost their last six games against the Bears.

The loss of Ryley Jacks who has been called up to the Gold Coast Titans will be a loss.

But utility Jack Cook will fill the number seven jersey and brings with him plenty of experience.

Mitch Rein, who played well in tough conditions last weekend, will again start in at hooker.

Coach Ben Woolf said his side's tight defence, which has been the hallmark of their first two victories, will be pivotal if they are to take bragging rights this Sunday.

"Our defence has been much better than last season with our missed tackles and line-breaks against us right down in the first two rounds,” Woolf said.

"But we know the Bears are going to be a really tough contest for us.

"They put 40 points on Ipswich last week and have a very experienced team, so we know what we're up against.

Woolf said his side was expecting a physical game as it traditionally is against Burleigh.

"It will be a really difficult task playing them at home this week and a step up from what we have played so far,” he said.

"We are really looking forward to it and all the players are really keen for the local derby.

"We are expecting a physical game and aiming to match them in this area.”

Fill-in halfback Jack Cook has had the full support of his coach thrown behind him for the round three clash.

Woolf said Jacks would be a loss to his side but his team is built to cope with players absent to play in the NRL.

"Riley will be a big loss but that is part of the affiliate process,” he said.

"We have prepared well through the pre season without him so are hoping it doesn't have too much impact on the team.”

Kick-off for the Intrsut Super Cup match between Tweed and Burleigh will be 2pm AEST.

Ash Taylor to make comeback for Tweed Seagulls in Intrust Super Cup match at Ilfracombe
Connor O’Brien, @obrien_GCB, Gold Coast Bulletin
7 minutes ago
Subscriber only
ILFRACOMBE will be the obscure site of Gold Coast Titans halfback Ash Taylor’s welcome return to the footy field.

The central Queensland town of about 300 people will act as the ultimate low-pressure environment for the 24-year-old’s first match back since announcing he would take a break from the game in early June.

Taylor will join Mitch Rein, Will Matthews and the rest of Tweed’s Round 18 squad in flying out to Longreach on Friday, a day before their Intrust Super Cup Country Round fixture against the last-placed Central Queensland Capras at Wayne Taylor Oval.

Titans executive chairman Dennis Watt confirmed the news with two words that fans have been keenly waiting to hear: “He’s ready.”

“Ash has worked very, very hard with the team that we put around him in the last several weeks and he has ticked every box, worked really hard and has been training really strongly,” Watt said.

“He’s in good shape, he starts out there playing for Tweed against the Capras in Country Week.

“Ash is a country boy from St George so he should feel very much at home in those surroundings … I can’t tell you how excited he is to get his hands back on the footy and be playing in a team in a competitive situation.”

Watt had high praise for Taylor and said it was important for him to not just go out to represent the club and those close to him but also to “play well for his own sake.”

“He has a full array of skills; at his best there’s few playmakers in the game who can actually match it with Ash,” he said.

“I wouldn’t expect anything too spectacular on day one, just so long as he plays confidently and strongly and is happy with his own performance.”

Watt added that the club will continue supporting their marquee man and called on external voices – fans and the media – to be patient.

“The eyes of the world are very much upon (footy players) and sometimes when other things aren’t going right in your life, the weight of those expectations is magnified so I would just ask for patience,” he said.

“Just remember he’s a very decent young man who is giving it his best for this club and for this game of ours.”

Sporting a moustache, Taylor trained well on Thursday, embracing Titans teammates, running the ball and being vocal around the paddock.

Veteran fullback Michael Gordon said those good signs had not gone unnoticed: “He’s back around the boys and he looks happy.”

Coach Ben Woolf said final footy had arrived early for the Ben Campbell Building Group Seagulls such was the importance of the round 20 clash with the ninth-placed Ipswich Jets at North Ipswich Reserve yesterday.

That certainly proved the cash with the Seagulls having to desperately defend their line for the final 15 minutes to hold onto a 22-18 lead and all-but confirm a finals position with three rounds remaining.

And the finals intensity will continue this Sunday at Piggabeen Sports Complex with Tweed having the incentive of keeping sixth spot and earning a home semi-final if they can beat Easts Tigers, who are running seventh.

That would leave them needing to beat out-of-the-running Souths Logan and Northern Pride to have a sixth v seventh finals clash at home.

“The intensity was definitely finals-like at the end of the game and our defensive effort was really good,” said Woolf.

“In the last 15-20 minutes they had six or seven sets at our line but we scrambled and covered them. We showed some really good desperation to keep them out.

“It was ball control that got us home in the end; there were a few areas not so great but for most of the time we played well and to lift a gear in defence when the game was on the line was really pleasing to see.

“Our aim is to finish top six and get a home semi-final, so we’re playing for sixth spot against Easts this Sunday then we’d have to finish beating Souths and Northern Pride.

“Our fate is in our hands if we keep winning.”

The Gulls’ effort against the unpredictable Jets was led up front by props John Palavi and Jarrod Morfett and hooker Christian Hazard (pictured) who was returning after a month out with a hamstring injury.

And halfback Ash Taylor showed his class off the back of their efforts, creating three of Tweed’s four tries – two with smart passes and one with a kick.

The Seagulls had a bit glut of possession in the first 10 minutes with repeat sets and penalties. Centre Lee Turner opened the scoring when he charged through some space created by a long ball from Taylor, stepping inside a defender and crossing the line.

Jets winger Marmin Barba scored twice six minutes apart to give Ipswich a 12-6 lead after 21 minutes before Turner scored his second. Left winger Rowland Jacobs picked up a rebound from a Taylor kicked and stepped and offloaded in traffic to Turner who crossed.

Jack Cook crossed soon after off an inside ball from Taylor close to the line, beating two tackles from 10 metres out. Lindon McGrady converted two of the three first-half tries to give the Seagulls a 16-12 half-time lead.

However, it took only three minutes of the second half for the Jets to grab the lead when five-eighth Josh Cleeland showed good footwork and evasive skills to step through the Tweed defence and give the Jets an 18-16 lead.

Second-rower Ioane Seiuli put Tweed back in front when he ran onto a pass from dummy-half Brent Woolf close to the line and crashed over (our main photo), with McGrady’s conversion making it 22-18 with 26 minutes remaining.

The Jets were soon after pressing Tweed’s line again and kept coming at the Seagulls for much of the last quarter of the game. Second-rower Ben White was held up with 12 minutes to go and soon after Ipswich received a seven-tackle set and charged upfield and on the back of a Barba break but a desperate tackle by Lamar Liolevave saved a try for the Seagulls.

The Jets rolled the ball into the in-goal and their supporters left their seats but fullback McGrady covered and a Tweed penalty relieving the pressure.

Sunday’s clash with the Tigers is just as important for the Seagulls. They played well to beat the Tigers 16-4 at Langlands Park in round 10 and need to be on-song to repeat that effort and retain sixth place.

Tweed Heads Seagulls 22 (L Turner 2, J Cook, I Seiuli tries; L McGrady 3 goals) def. Ipswich Jets 18 (M Barba 2, J Cleeland tries; Barba 3 goals) at North Ipswich Reserve.
