Im guessing they will be missing 3 or 4, including Smith. Brennan needs to send them out for the first half like he sent them out for the second half against Manly.

I predict that Will Chambers might be missing as well. He should have a case to answer for a crusher tackle on Hayne. Two weeks for him sounds fair.

)Gold Coast Titans v Melbourne Storm at Cbus Super Stadium, 5:30pm (AEST)

Titans mail: Michael Gordon won’t be back so Alexander Brimson will remain at fullback.

Storm mail: Melbourne faces a hooker crisis with Cameron Smith racing the clock and his understudy Brandon Smith ruled out. Young guns Harry Grant and Billy Walters are also unavailable through injury. Kenny Bromwich is likely to be called upon to play at rake. Suliasi Vunivalu and Nelson Asofa-Solomona are also out injured and will need to be replaced on the wing and at prop respectively. Will Chambers is also suspended for three weeks. Tui Kamikamica is likely to come into the forward rotation. Jahrome Hughes will be injected and could play either in the backline or possibly even jump in at hooker.

Titans v Storm: Cam Smith set to play; Will Matthews returns
Author NRL.com Timestamp Tue 21 Aug 2018, 04:04 PM

Have to wonder if Cameron Smith's recent injuries has him thinking about retirement.

The great man is off contract at the end of the season and there was talk last month that he'll stick around not only next season but also in 2020.

But given the manner in which he unexpectedly pulled the pin on his Origin career a few months ago, Smith might have another big surprise up his sleeve.

He turned 35 in June and there are signs that he is finally feeling the pinch after remaining relatively injury-free throughout his storied career.

Smith isn't the only injury concern for coach Craig Bellamy heading into the penultimate round of the regular season.

The Titans have shown they can't be taken for granted despite being out of finals contention. And they aren't afraid to play from behind, as they did in big wins over Manly and the Warriors over the past month.

The Storm will be without a few key players and could be ripe for an upset.

Match: Titans vs Storm
ROUND 24 - SATURDAY 25TH AUGUST 5:30pm

Key match-up: It was in round one of the 2003 NRL season that 19-year-old former stablehand Billy Slater debuted with the Storm. More than 15 years later and Slater - retiring after this season - is facing a kid who is just starting his own journey to fame and fortune. Titans fullback AJ Brimson is still only 19 and one of the NRL's hottest young stars. He probably had posters of Slater on his bedroom wall just a few years ago. Brimson will be relishing his clash with the player widely regarded as the greatest fullback of all time.

For the Titans to win: This team has a frustrating habit of running hot and cold from the opening whistle to the full-time siren. Not unlike a few other teams this year, you're never sure what the Titans will dish up. It shouldn't take a half-time blast from the coach (as was the case last week) to play to your potential. The Titans owe it to Garth Brennan to deliver an honest 80-minute effort, with and without the ball. They also need Ash Taylor to be as inspired as he was against Manly.

For the Storm to win: They didn't run up a big score but there was something oh-so Storm-like about last week's near shut-out of Parramatta. Defence was obviously a major focus for the premiers after rare back-to-back losses and that shouldn't change on Saturday. With the finals only a couple of weeks away, Bellamy will be demanding a high intensity performance. If Smith is out his long-time teammate Slater will have to provide his own brand of leadership and direction.

Titans Stat Attack: Winger Anthony Don equalled the club's all-time try-scoring record when he crossed in the fourth minute of last week's big comeback win over Manly. Don has scored 67 tries in 107 games with the Titans, joining former winger David Mead, who finished with 67 tries in 147 games with the club.

Storm Stat Attack: A heavy casualty toll left Melbourne without a single player on the interchange bench for most of the second half last week . And even when they were reduced to 12 men with Cameron Munster's sin-binning, the Storm still didn't crack. They did end up conceding one try with three minutes remaining with 13 men on the field, although replays showed the decision to award it was questionable. We certainly would've heard more about it from Bellamy and the Storm if the game was a lot closer.

And another thing: The writing seems to be on the wall for Michael Gordon. The man teammates refer to as 'Flash' isn't expected to return from a wrist injury this season and might've struggled to regain his spot even if he was healthy, considering Brimson's form at fullback over the past two games. Turning 35 in October, Gordon has another year to run on his contract. But with Tyrone Peachey joining the Titans in 2019, Gordon could be hard-pressed to cement a regular spot in the backline.

Titans: Will Matthews replaces Bryce Cartwright on the bench in the only change.

Storm: Justin Olam replaces centre Will Chambers (suspension) and Cheyse Blair is in for winger Suliasi Vunivalu (hamstring). Tui Kamikamica and Ryley Jacks replace Nelson Asofa-Solomona (ankle) and Brandon Smith (knee) on the bench. Tim Glasby and Christian Welch swap starting and bench roles. Cameron Smith has been named despite suffering back spasms last week.

Head-to-head: Played 18; Storm 12 wins, Titans 6 wins
Previous result: Storm won 28-14 in round 10
Points per game: Titans 19.9; Storm 23.2
Points conceded per game: Titans 24.6; Storm 15.1
Televised: Live on Fox League

Petero Civoniceva's prediction: Cam Smith has been named but it will be interesting to see whether Craig Bellamy would prefer to give him a week off to freshen up ahead of the finals. The absence of Will Chambers hurts the Storm and I think they are vulnerable this week. The Titans have plenty of points in them and if Taylor and Brimson fire they can spring an upset.

Tip: Titans by 4.

Titans v Storm: Smith a confirmed starter; Cartwright cut
https://www.nrl.com/

On a week like this, you could forgive Storm skipper Cameron Smith for thinking about retirement.

Carrying a back injury suffered last round and leading a Melbourne side down on troops with Will Chambers suspended and Suliasi Vunivalu, Nelson Asofa-Solomona and Brandon Smith in the casualty ward, there are signs the 35-year-old is finally feeling the pinch after remaining relatively injury-free throughout his storied career.

The great man is off contract at the end of the season and there was talk last month that he'll stick around not only next season but also in 2020.

The Storm could be ripe for an upset, but they are also back on top of the Telstra Premiership ladder and are the frontrunners to take out another minor premiership.

The other muppet out there does nothing but earn an inflated wage.

Honestly. Tonight some rough calls but this is why Sponsors don't want us and we continue to always be at the bottom of the ladder. We aren't a 80 minute NRL team. We are a team that can look good at times but then play absolute QCUP level garbage. Silly penalties, bonehead plays, absolute zero awareness of the situation and for gods sake do we not practice our 5th tackle? absolutely ropeable tonight. Not acceptable and a slap in the face of the fans who paid to go. see you next week when the cowboys flog us.

A disappointing end to the game with such an exciting beginning. We are a few players short of an NRL squad.

But I'll remember this game for AJ Brimson's performance.

Slater really stood up, without him (And refs) it'd have been a different game.

I'm gutted. We should have run away with that game. Only stand out was (again) Brimson. We lost the refs when their Golden boy Smith was in a squabble with our lowly captain. After that they didn't give us a look in. Allowed Melbourne a sniff and our disgraceful left side did the rest.

If Matthews is named next week I'll go buy Cowboys gear to wear to the game.

The refs are terrified of Cameron Smith aren't they? I think they just cant match his intelligence so avoid decision that might anger his lordship.

AJ is amazing, and Mofo was best forward on field almost. Sami also looked really good so our young brigade was awesome.

LG missed a tackle sure, but Munster turned in cos Koni looked away i think and Munster knew he was then in a one on one. LG was fine otherwise, and again came out of it at least as good as the million dollar man, who lets face it laid down and had to go off the field because he tried to play chicken with the ref and lost. he always looks for the easier option, similar to his 40m field goal attempt the other week.

Mr Hipgrave, please leave your jersey in the change rooms and report to Burleigh next year.

most everyone else tried their guts outs, and James was tacking everything that MOVED just before he got the head knock.

Such a shame Sami didnt get that ball down in the first half. super try from our new guys and deserved better.

thats 2 point losses to Storm and Souths, and 6 or 8 against roosters who had 2 tries confirmed as bull**** after the game, plus 1 point loss to Sharks and 1 point loss to Panthers....

Hopefully the kids are growing in confidence and experience, because we were right up to our armpits in those 5 matches and lost them all to top 5 teams

Matthews will never be dropped. His relationship is to Brennan is what Henderson's was to Cartwright and Zillman's was to Henry.

I'm more happy after that loss than I was after that win last week because our D was so much better. Still bad but a lot better.

That was a cracking game. We play like that every week and we are a top eight team for sure. Great effort and that’s all I ask for.

A great effort and not winning will not make the 8! Wins and points will

Too many errors, penalties and all round poor defence by multiple players. Until that is addressed, they will always be an also-ran team

Agree with this post. Obviously would have preferred a win, but a decent performance against top of the table team.

Some observations.

Geez I hate the commentary team. Hodges is dumb as a a bag of rocks but Parker is worse. So opinionated, blatantly dislikes the Titans, but you would think he is an immortal the way he talks. God he is annoying.

Agree with an earlier post, I would be happy to not see Hurrell and Matthews in a Titans jersey again.

No idea how the Olam offside decision just before half time is not a professional foul and he avoided the sin-bin.

Jarrad Wallace might rival Hodges in the iq stakes. Geez he gives away some dumb penalties and that knock -on of a loose pass was just lazy.

Why did Stockwell not get on the field?

Obviously Ash is not living up to the hype or expectations but I actually think he has been better last 2 weeks.

Not sure how I feel about Peachey situation. Obviously would like to add an origin player, but if he wants to stay, we would need some compensation. I would gladly take Waqa Blake and Isaih Yeo.

If Peachey comes, everything I have read indicates Brennan wants to play him in the centres, so who is our 6?. Surely not Tyrone Roberts. I was ok with him coming back as depth, but I don't want him starting. We do need a 6 to take pressure off Taylor, but I don't want to move AJ from fullback.

We desperately need a starting quality edge forward. Hipgrave brings energy and might be ok on the bench as he can play middle as well. We previously had been linked with Alex Glenn and would gladly take him. Not sure James can play wide. Definitely has the motor but worried about his lateral mobility.

Finally, hope the Roosters pump the Broncos. Out of all the players for Napa to clean up, McCullough is probably last on my list. Lodge, Thaiday, Roberts, McGuire, Boyd and Sims. So many options.

I forgot to mention Parkers commentary.

I can toleratate almost all commentators, they dont really get to me ( Braith has his moments ) but i was ready to smack the TV over.

He started in pre game by saying "Cam smith will play, he puts himself ahead of the team", then continues to say that storm can wrap up the minor premiership with a win - which they cant.

then all game is Cam or billy this and that. if Cam does it its genius, if we do it its luck or a penalty.

Calls Ash for diving basically although kept denying he was calling him for diving.... then when ash DOES leave the field, andwe DON'T get the penalty he says that's a good call. what a dog. I read he he hasn't made a lot of friends at FOX and probably wont be there next year thanks Christ.

Got home from the game feeling that I had witnessed a stitch-up. The refs completely destroyed a cracking game of footy. Liked a lot that I saw except for our left edge which was very sad in defence. Koni had a good dig but even his best is not enough. Do I need to mention the bloke with a head like a pipe-cleaner? And why we can’t hide Elgey in defence like Penrith hides Maloney is beyond me. Will be back in hospital next Thursday but have asked for a pass-out for the game.

One common theme from our fans and neutrals is that it was a good game of football (mostly). And if we keep playing like that we will get more viewers and bigger crowds and more fans.

Also the NRL community has REALLY discovered AJ Brimson and people are talking.

hope you are ok titanic.

yes it was. we played our part in it too, but i feel that was once we saw the writing on the wall and refs weren't going to allow it to be an even contest.

with the ref errors, our errors and penalties - i couldnt believe we were only 2 points behind with 10 to go... we just needed a decent end to a set, but we couldnt get it right. Ash woudl try to run, then panic, Keegan got it at one point, and my boy LG kept putting up bombs but not near the goal line. so storm kept getting ball on 30m line and were never really pressured

In that last set, a cross field kick to Sami and we’re a chance except we found Wallace :(

That was a stitch up by the refs. I don’t care if we get penalised but the storm committed the same offences and no penalty. Badger is corrupt and has been for years.

The most pleasing thing tonight was the line speed in the 1st half. Something we haven’t had all year and again didn’t have it in the 2nd half but Badger was responsible for putting us on the back foot all 2nd half.

What Matthews has on Brennan who knows and can someone remind me why we resigned Wallace

Are you for AJ as our permanent #1 now David? I was with you in that I thought he was fine in the halves but I've since changed my mind after the last few weeks...kid looks at home with the #1 jersey I reckon.

Also I've no doubt Wallace is bludging up the joint...I noticed last week after Garth's massive spray he was much better in the second half...but he was back to his old plodding self today.

Was at the game. We had 63% possession in the first half. Couldn't shake the feeling the refs were trying to even it up in the second. Saying that thought we had a number of chances with 10minutes to go where we needed ash to play for a repeat set yet he tried the miracle play / wasn't in position. That'll change as he gets more experience but really hope Garth's getting him some help in that department because it seems to be a reoccurring thing when the games on the line. Elgey couldn't come up with a decent kick to save his life towards the end there. Local lad but he needs a hell of a lot of work. Not sure how it wasnt a penalty when ash had his head taken off near in front of the posts but that's life. Loved that the lads tackled their heart out and there was some really encouraging signs of effort out there. He's got them playing for each other which is awesome to see. Exciting times ahead

What gives me the ****s more than anything is if that hit on taylor was Johnathon Thurston in Townsville on Friday night and he also goes off, the referee would be blowing the pee out of the whistle and Stimson would be on report. The double standards in today's game is appalling, these big names seem to control the game. I'm sure Parker would of changed his tune as well if it was his buddy playing for the cowboys.

yeah i was thinking the same last night. He is just doing too well there to ignore. He is stopping a try or two per game, and also creating opportunities as well.

The only concern is what it does to our 3/4 line. Don and Sami been our best backs so they shouldn't be dropped, but how do you shoehoen Gordon in, does he play centre? does Sami move in and Gordon to one wing?

Isaako has played well all year in a top 8 team, Ramien as well, but if anything thinks AJ isn't the best young player this year they are off their tree.
