That is great news

In regards to this match well the challenge is on to see the 17 we put on the park put in the same effort as tonight. If they roll over again on our home turf there will be hell to pay.
The same effort is non-negotiatiable.

8. Wallace
9. Peats
10. King
11. James
12. Cartwright ... yes I know but we have injuries
13. Arrow

14. Rein

I think this should be the team (assuming these are fit):

1. Gordon
2. Don
3. Copley
4. Lee
5. Elliot
6. Brimson
7. Taylor
8. Wallace
9. Peats
10. James
11. King
12. Fotuaika
13. Arrow

14. Rein
15. Stockwell
16. Boyle
17. Simpkins/Matthews

I think it's about time we replace Sami. He's been really quiet since the Broncos game. Give Fotuaika a starting spot, he's been going well.

Anyone know how long our injured troops are out?

Titans find halves pair that clicks
http://www.sundaymail.com.au

GARTH Brennan may have found his answer in the halves.

Alexander “AJ” Brimson and Ashley Taylor were the fourth combination the Titans have used this season, but it might be the right one.
The teenager’s NRL debut was about helping steer the ship, and bringing energy, enthusiasm and defensive mettle.

He delivered. The Titans put in their best performance since their win over the Sea Eagles in Round 5.

But it was also the sharpest they have looked all season and the combination of Taylor and Brimson was partly to thank for that.
Brennan will be able to confidently take this combination forward into next week’s clash with Newcastle.

Brimson was outstanding in defence, which has been a problem for five-eighth Kane Elgey. He made 17 tackles, including a great shot on Will Chambers in the first half.

He showed plenty of promise with his touches and threatened the line on several occasions, almost scoring with eight minutes left only to be held back by Christian Welch, who was sin-binned as a result.

The Titans were gutsy in defeat, finishing the game with just one man on the bench.

Will Matthews was concussed before star backrower Kevin Proctor left the field with a suspected torn groin.

The hits kept coming with Jarrod Wallace and Jack Stockwell also taken for Head Injury Assessments and Keegan Hipgrave suffering a suspected broken wrist.

Wallace and Hipgrave were both able to return.

The Titans fell short in the end – but there was a lot they could take from the game.

I expect Cartwright who’s on much better money than nearly all of his teammates to be accountable and answerable to his teammates tomorrow at a video session

Titanic

From Triple M “he’s happy and in a good space blah blah blah” and why wouldn’t you be getting paid pretty well not to endanger yourself. Ennis is right, he’s taking the p1ss.

And now we are making up imaginary injuries to cover for his form, meanwhile Hipgrave straps a possible fracture to play on. That's the story, not how bad Cartwright is. Drop him and forget him, chalk it up to an inexperienced coach being suckered in by Gould. Yes it's an expensive mistake but every time he takes the field we make the mistake again and again.

Titans should start putting non-performance clauses into contracts, we seem to have little luck with some of our "NAME" signings.

I don't understand all these negative comments towards Sami. I think he's been doing a pretty decent job out there and hasn't been making any real mistakes. That break he made in the weekend was the most exciting thing of the season so far. It's been a long time since we have seen one of our wingers in space like that.

Teflon Don seems to be regularly overlooked in this chat. JB said it best in the other thread "He's never been a speedster but he's been dependable" - You shouldn't want that in a winger! They should be quick or big or both. Not only does Don not offer either but he doesn't even look like he wants to score tries. In the lead up to the Brenko try he danced around instead of having a crack, its so frustrating to watch after having Meady and Gordon for so many years.

I'd like to see either Elliot or Kiah Cooper given a crack. Elliot offers speed and Cooper offers strength (not to mention he scored a great try to tweed off a cross field kick in the weekend). Either that or Gordon or Brenko to the wing.

Garth Brennan stands by under-fire utility Bryce Cartwright, pleads with critics to lay off

Bryce Cartwright has been under attack for his form of late.

BRYCE Cartwright is copping it from all directions after a shocking non tackle became the latest black spot on a poor season but Titans coach Garth Brennan has vowed to stick by his under-fire player.

Mark Carroll and Michael Ennis have led the criticism of the big money 23-year-old over the last week but Brennan said the back-rower was not facing the axe and pleaded for the commentary to be toned down for welfare reasons.

“My concern is for him,” Brennan told Fairfax Media on Sunday. “He seems to be dealing with things at the moment. But people can only take so much.

“It’s probably about time people back off. He’s out of form, I accept that, he accepts that. But you can go too far with young players sometimes.”

Cartwright last week copped a fierce spray from Fox League’s Michael Ennis, who said on Big League Wrap that the Titans’ off-season recruit was “taking the piss”.

With all eyes on him it was a bad time for Cartwright to put a non-effort into a tackle on the last line of defence as Cameron Munster strolled in for a crucial try untouched.

Cue more criticism, led by league legend Mark Carroll, who described the effort as “embarrassing”.

While Brennan was disappointed with the play he said there were other players who could have done more to stop the points being scored.

“He could have made a better effort on that tackle, no doubt, but [Titans fullback] Michael Gordon could have as well,” Brennan argued.

“People are making a lot of it because it was Bryce. He’s been creating a lot of headlines for the last 18 months.

“At the end of the day, he’s a 23-year-old kid with a lot of pressure being put on him that is unnecessary.

“There are players on more money at other clubs who aren’t copping what he is. The amount of scrutiny the poor kid has been under ... people have got to realise it may become a welfare issue, to be honest.

“If you keep kicking a dog when he’s down he’s just going to cower, not grow in confidence. Everyone just needs to lay off him.”

Looks like he'll still be in the team this week. Smh.

The simplest thing for Brennan to do and to take the spotlight off Cartwright is to drop him to Q cup.

In the press conference Brennan says he's in a good place mentally now it's a welfare case? I'm getting confused and my patience is wearing thin when other players are being dropped except his pet.

Oh and rewatch the replay and tell me how Gordon wasn't putting in.

Who else is going to replace Cartwright with our latest string of injuries. I am not his biggest fan but we don't have that much depth anymore, and I think it would be silly to bring in one more person to plug our top 30 roster, when the right person comes we might not have the room to sign them.

Unfortunately Carty will be there this week as we just dont have the cover at the moment. He obviously doesnt read any of his bad press. I think 398 of the 400 "experts" commenting on his play in the media all say the same thing. Get the ball, tuck it under your arm and run hard. But nah he just has to dance around running back and forward hoping for a offload. Bloke just doesnt want to do the hard yard right now for whatever reason. He defence though is just not up to first grade standard. If we are going to drop LG to QCup then surely he is there next if we dont improve. Im not even asking for a "showstopper" game from him right now just execute the ****ing basics of a forward. Run hard, tackle hard, look like you want to be there.

Cartwright is the only specialist right edge forward we have after Coke Zero. I would rather him than sending a middle forward out there to fill in. Somebody suggested MoFo and that's exactly what I wouldn't do to a young bloke learning his trade in the middle. Maybe Guerra will knock some sense into him.

Kind of how I see it as well. It’s easy to knock Carty around (literally and metaphorically) but unless you want Greenwood to come in from Burleighs bench then you’ve gotta ride it.

Moe in the backrow is a huge no. Let him learn his trade in the middle off the bench.

To be honest, I’d rather nearly anyone than Cartwright at this stage. You can’t have a bloke in the team who’s deliberately missing tackles like he did. Put Greenwood or Simpkins there. May not be stand out performers but at least you know they’re actually going to have a go.

Like I said before, if anybody else missed a tackle like Bryce, they’d be dropped straight away. Elgey admittedly wasn’t defending very well, but he never once completely avoided a tackle. If you’re going to drop Elgey for his defence, it’s hypocritical not to drop Cartwright.

I think you’re missing the point mate - we probably can’t drop Cartwright because we literally do not have enough healthy backrowers to fill out a 17. And I for one am hoping we don’t name young props in the backrow just to find a way to not have him in the team.

Allow me to elaborate.

I'd prefer anyone to fill the spot than Cartwright as he isn't in form, thus the comment regarding have Condon play on the right edge (it was a joke).

Brennan losing the dressing room is with regards to the fact that he is happier to blame Lee for letting a try in when he had a two man overlap and saying that Gordon had just as much to answer for for letting Munster in when Gordon was sliding right when Munster straightened and went through the gap that Bryce should have had covered (and did but just didn't do anything about it). So in a nutshell, it won't be long before the lower paid teammates stop showing heart for a coach that actively blames others in the face of the reality that Cartwright shouldn't be playing NRL.

The comment regarding loving reading your comments if Condon was named (remembering that was a joke) was pointed toward your history of not being too fond of the guy.

In saying all that, yes I can see that Cartwright will be named through necessity, doesn't change the fact that he is terrible at his job and will be tested all night. Probably why when we are the home team we aren't the favourites against the Knights.

If he is in a bad place he needs to step away from Footy all together to get his head right for himself and his family. I agree with you that he has talent but unless his head is in the game all be it the Titans or QRL he should for his own head space stand down. It was said that he came up here to get out of Sydney to get out of the Toxic environment however I wonder how much actual family and friend support he has here on the Coast ? If he has limited or none it will hard for him to move on etc.

Wow, nice lineup

Agreed and I would argue possibly our strongest lineup of the year all round. Strong forward pack, a bit of strike out wide with Brenko and Copley, AJ who was superb in defence and looked to link well with Ash, and a great bench. I'd be confident with a team like that as long as the effort from last week is there.

Titans vs Knights

Titans could have 1 or potentially 2 changes with Kevin Proctor set to be ruled out due to groin injury picked up last week after wishbone tackle by Cameron Smith, this will see Ryan James moving to left edge with Max King starting in FRF with Bryce Cartwright coming on bench. Only other possible change to 17 could be Konrad Hurrell replacing Dale Copley in centres. Nathan Peats (ribs), Jai Arrow (ribs), Jack Stockwell (concussion), Jarrod Wallace (concussion) and Keegan Hipgrave (wrist) all trained during week and will play. Keegan Hipgrave will play as right edge 2RF after training there during week. Knights expected to be 1-17 no late changes expected despite Jamie Buhrer and Jacob Lillyman named as reserves.

Keegan Hipgrave will play as right edge 2RF after training there during week. Knights expected to be 1-17 no late changes expected despite Jamie Buhrer and Jacob Lillyman named as reserves.

Wonder what the issue with Copley is? Bit of luck he plays tomorrow.

Good half. Went went off for about 10 minutes there which let the knights in but defence looks much better. On another note I deadset cannot listen to fox commentary anymore. They are all donkeys or former NSW players and they always have a giant stiffy for whoever is playing against us and can barely illicit some praise when we execute well. Also why does Henry have to be there everytime we play? what does it offer?

Spot on. Rein a good runner of the footy from 9, but a dummy half needs to do so much more to help steer the team around and that's exactly what Peats does. Not to mention his defence which has been solid.

Menoitios

I mean I get that, but there's more to taking control of a game than just kicking it out to take the opposing fullback out of the game.

Agreed. In this day and age you need a halves pairing that compliment each other and the team. That's what Garth was trying to do with the Can'tright experiment. The number 6 or 7 on your back means nothing now days. One needs to do the hard yards and one needs to instigate. Kane and Ash are similar players IMO. AJ is different. He's not afraid to run the ball and do the tough stuff.

They're only a game and a half into their partnership. Give them time and they'll dominate behind a young and aggressive forward pack.

Defence is my biggest concern.

Don't want to be a Debby Downer but his defence wasn't tested in the slightest. But yes, he didn't suck today.

Oh yeah definitely agree with you there, most of the time he was on we had the ball. But happy that he cut his stupid little jink, Nate Myles run tonight. Don't know if he makes the side next week.

Ending LG's contract or greatly reducing it makes perfect sense for more than one reason now. All credit to AJ, brilliant goal line defence today and try saving tackle to game winning try.

Hope we can lay off The Don for a while. He's a solid team member.

And thank you Neil for pointing out that it was a high scoring game so our defence needs work, did you miss the part where we had 11 on the field?

That's the Titans steel that makes us fans proud. Highlight for me was holding the Knights out and forcing an error with only 11 men on the field.

Brimson is our long term #6 surely. I know we were grooming him for fullback but honestly his defence and combination with Ash makes them the perfect halves pairing. His 1 on 1 tackle when we were down to 11 was exceptional and he is a smart player. Sadly I think it's goodbye Kane Elgey unless he stays as a backup.

Hipgrave was an absolute machine and played massive minutes on both edges. Think it might've been a test from Brennan to earn a contract and if he keeps performances like that up he's got no worries. My only gripe is he needs to tone down the aggressiveness a little bit as he got caught offside a couple of times. But gotta love his passion and he is an animal.

And once again Arrow. Boy oh boy he just does not give up. Played 80 or close to it and looked buggered but just kept motoring. Massive work load and efforts like being the last one chasing is why he is our man of the match almost every week. Future captain of this club.

Gotta enjoy this win after weeks of heartache and throwing remotes through TV screen's. Definitely shouldn't be getting ahead of ourselves as there's a long way to go but the future looks bright with some of these boys. Great spirited win.

Titans break drought with late win over Knights

The Gold Coast Titans kept their cool in crunch time to claim a pulsating 33-26 victory over the Newcastle Knights on Saturday at Cbus Super Stadium.

In one of the most topsy-turvy games of the season, the Titans came from behind twice in the second half to notch their fourth win of the 2018 Telstra Premiership.

Scores were locked at 26-26 when Titans five-eighth AJ Brimson dived over in the corner for a match-winning try with just under five minutes remaining.

Ash Taylor, who assumed the goal-kicking duties from an ailing Michael Gordon in the second half, steered the sideline conversion over before sealing the win with a 78th-minute field goal.

The Knights will be kicking themselves after leading by eight with 20 minutes to play. Newcastle have lost three in a row and slipped to 5-6 for the season.

The Titans opened their account first with winger Phil Sami scoring the first of two tries. Gordon's sideline conversion gave the home side a 6-0 lead after nine minutes.

A Gordon penalty goal stretched the lead to 8-0 after 23 minutes before the Knights got on the board with Sione Matautia's try. Brock Lamb's conversion trimmed the gap to two and he locked it up at 8-8 with a penalty goal three minutes later.

Gold Coast went to the half-time break on a positive note, with centre Dale Copley scoring out wide for a 12-8 lead. Gordon was off target with the conversion attempt.

The Titans hit a hurdle in the first two minutes of the second half Moeaki Fotuaika sin-binned for a professional foul. Newcastle took advantage of the extra man in attack with prop Herman Ese'ese charging over for a try. Lamb made no mistake with the kick and the visitors had their first lead.

But it didn't last long, as Sami scored his second try. Taylor took over the goal-kicking duties and duly converted for an 18-14 lead with 33 minutes remaining.

Winger Ken Sio put the Knights back in front with a try in the corner, with Lamb drilling the sideline conversion over the black dot.

Kalyn Ponga then put his stamp on the game with a breathtaking 90-metre try, which Lamb converted for a 26-18 lead.

The Titans hit back again with winger Anthony Don's converted try, cutting the deficit to two with 16 minutes to play. Taylor then locked it up at 26-26 with a 68th-minute penalty goal, setting the stage for a thrilling climax.

Taylor missed a chance to put his side ahead when he sliced a relatively easy penalty goal, but the Titans made the most of their next opportunity, with Brimson crossing out wide.

Wow! A lot of positives from this game. Forward pack was awesome and definitely had the better of a pretty good Knights pack. Outside backs had their best game of the year (and this is coming from a firm believer that "is don is not good"). And Cartwright also looked like the player who we thought we were signing.

But.. Without trying to bring down the mood.. Rein doesn't suit our style of play at all and we would be much better with Peats for 80min. We have Ash who wants to be a dominant half and who when is on fire like tonight can win us games. Reins delivery at times is terrible and his defence is weak, we would be best to let him go I feel. AJ looks amazing but can anyone honestly say that they think he is a long term 6? At times he looked like a mirrored image of Ponga running around out there! He's pure excitement. I'm happy with him there for now but I'd love to see him at the back before the seasons done. I'm also not completely sold on Benko either. His hand off was great but his defence for most of the match was pretty bad and his hands weren't much better than Koni's.

All and all it was great to get a win!

On another note can someone on here with a bit of say please write to Classic telling them just how awful those jerseys look. I'd rather we played out the season in our heritage strip

If Wayne couldn't see a spot for Arrow in his side this year (even a bench spot), he has lost his touch!
