Davis was in a sling so I would be shocked to see him named Tuesday & Pulu for me I think Henry has got the interchange working well at the moment

ALong with the tigers, Raiders have been a hot item going undefeated and winning close games in round 1 and 2 that they would have lost last year... but lets look closer.

they beat Penrith, who were 0-2, and beat the very very weak roosters by 1, and drew with the knights, who are comfortably the weakest team right now due to their youth policy and development.

So they are undefeated but have had probably the softest opening of any team.

they are ripe for the picking.

lets return to CBUS 3-1 and ready to smash the donkeys.

I agree that Canberra are coming into the game through a very soft form line (and with injuries to key players!!) but it is very, very hard to be confident of a win down in Canberra. We have been on the end of some awful drubbings down there. What really concerns me though was our last ten minutes on Saturday night - it so often seems that those sort of endings can flow into the start of the next game.

Still, I honestly believe that if we play the way we did in the first 30 against the Storm or the first 30 of the second half against the Tigers we will get the cash.

Yeah K, all good points. I think this will be a "which team turns-up" year for us as these guys work out themselves and their ability to sustain concentration. For sure it's going to be a roller-coaster but already the season has been more entertaining than the sum total of the last four ... young blokes having a go, older blokes behaving like men rather than mutton dressed as lamb ... it's all pretty good fun.

Great win first of all against the tiger Olive played solid could turn into a good player should get a 2nd chance this week end cuz i think Davis is still injured I would still swap Macdonald and Hoffman around would stop a lot of tries down the side Shillo should stand up against his old team should get his 130meter haul and a good 20 tackle count Jan]mes showed some leadership off the bench and we need that but still would like to see Moseley on the bench Meady at the fb spot give us some very missed meters from there

Canberra's Papalii and Soliola are my main concerns. Shut them down and Canberra won't score too many. Pressure on the two inexperienced halves wouldn't go astray either. Hopefully we can learn from our lack of pressure we placed on the halfs when we played the Knights.

It's a very winnable game.

I'm with you Teke. last few games we seem to be able to settle down and stay in the game after getting off to bad starts. This has not been the case in years. If we can start well, cut out the silly mistakes and penalties think this will be another good one that should hopefully make some of the other teams start looking a bit more closely at their calendars for when they play us

Look I know everyone in here can't stand Zillman, but can I ask u to put that aside for one moment while I put this to you.

Don't u think that Zillman being now out for 42 weeks over back/calf issues is a total inditement on Greg Condon and the Rehab department?
Zillman is on very good coin and he should be playing some footy.

I know we all have a little laugh at Zilly's expense but in all fairness i just can't see how he can be a productive member of this team. A few years ago he was one of my favourite players and also one of best, but after the 2010 prelim final (where he played shockingly) and Presto retirement (can we have presto back please), he has just been a waste of 600ish k a year. I really want him to do good, I met him a few years back and he is a genuine and nice guy, but i just think he is past it. If he retires now, it leaves us with well over 1 million in our cap and probably make a play for a few good players and Zilly's reputation would be denied any further damaging that could occur. but i do think it is a real shame.

Yeah by all accounts Zillman is the best 'trainer' on the team. I think due to the Titans not really being a team hugely in the spotlight I think most media outlets just assume he is a gun player. He hasn't been good since his last years at canberra and our 1 great year in the comp. As all of us have said its surprising Henry still promotes him as Captain im guessing because of the amount of money we pay him. Honestly I just wish he would pack it in and do the ultimate gesture to the club that has given him so much. Hard to say when most of us in the same position wouldnt turn down an additional $400k+ a year but honestly he doesnt make our team better by being in it....only stifles younger players coming through from getting game time

....maybe after the moles leak that we have signed Sarginson...PLAYER SWAP?!?!

We could use the same loop hole that the Eels are supposedly going to test out with Watmough "career ending" new injury. Back and calf are all new and we send him packing, pay him out and it doesn't affect our salary cap.

Preview: Canberra Raiders v Gold Coast Titans
GIO Stadium
Saturday, 5.30pm (AEDT)

The Titans will travel from the sunny Gold Coast to the nation’s capital for what should be a cracking Easter Saturday clash between two sides exceeding expectations so far in season 2016.

You might not have tipped it, but this is a top eight clash, with the Titans sitting in sixth position, coming off an impressive victory over the Tigers, and the Raiders coming in just behind the competition leaders in second spot, thanks to their unbeaten start to the year.

Adding to the spectacle, both teams come into this one fielding the same team as Round 2, with the Raiders in particular finally being afforded some continuity in a starting team already ravaged by injury.

Elliot Whitehead retains his place in the halves after a fine outing last start against the Knights in which he brilliantly set up two tries, however his selection in the No.6 jersey will once again place a large amount of last-tackle pressure on halfback Sam Williams.

Although luckily for the Raiders, Dally M leader Josh Hodgson has emerged as a genuine playmaking option, and just in time too, following injuries to Aidan Sezer and Blake Austin.

Meanwhile, David Shillington will return to Canberra for the first time since departing the club at the conclusion of last season.

He’ll face a stern test up front against Shannon Boyd and Frank-Paul Nuuausala who’ve been extremely strong in the opening stages of games so far this season.

Watch out Raiders: The Titans have been playing some enterprising footy so far this season, on the back of some great second-phase play. They currently sit fourth in the league for offloads (12 per game). With their penchant for keeping the ball alive, the Titans have been able to make inroads with their speedy backs, as seen last week against the Tigers. The Raiders will need to be on their game defensively to lock the Titans' ball runners down.

Watch out Titans: The Raiders currently sit third in the league for tackle breaks (averaging 29.3 per game), while the Titans sit second in the league for missed tackles with 29.7 per game. This could spell danger for the Gold Coast, who can’t afford to give anything away to a Raiders team that already bends the line with every hit-up thanks to their monster forward pack.

Key match-up: Shaun Fensom v Greg Bird. The two inspirational leaders of their teams will go head-to-head in an enticing battle on Saturday afternoon. Both have had impressive statistics in games so far this season, with Bird a far greater attacking threat and Fensom predictably the defensive specialist, tackling at 94.1 per cent efficiency so far this year. Whichever tough nut can get the better of this matchup will go a long way to winning the forward battle and inspiring their side to success.

The history: Played 17; Raiders 7, Titans 10. The last time these two sides met was in Round 24 last year when the Titans cleaned up their opposition by 28 points to 12.

What are the odds: Raiders $1.42, Titans $2.85. There’s actually more money wagered on the Titans than there is on the favourites Canberra. Sportsbet punters are looking for the value on offer with the Gold Coast and they’ve been very well supported at the line where they’re receiving the start. Latest odds at Sportsbet.com.au.

Match officials: Referee: Henry Perenara. Assistant: Chris Sutton. Touch Judges: Clayton Sharpe and Nick Beashel.

Televised: Fox Sports – Live coverage from 5pm (AEDT).

The way we see it: The Titans will travel to the nation’s capital full of confidence after their impressive victory over the Tigers last start. But they’ll be facing a totally different challenge against the Raiders, who’ve been the success story so far this year through a huge forward pack and a tough mentality. If the Titans are to win this one they’ll have to play above their weight through the middle third of the field and dominate out wide. The home side shouldn’t give them that chance however. Their makeshift halves combination has finally had a chance to gel and their big men should be far too strong. Raiders by 10.

if they think we will lose by ten... they would also have thought roosters and knights would have won by millions. and they both went to the wire.

If both teams play like they have so far this year... we win comfortably.

If they really muscle up, then we will need to match them in the middle to stand a chance as they do have some boppers in there.

Titans captain Nathan Friend in doubt for tomorrow’s clash with Raiders

TITANS captain Nathan Friend is in doubt for tomorrow’s clash against the Raiders in Canberra after suffering two head knocks in the opening three NRL rounds.

Friend was forced from the field with concussion in both the Titans home games — against Newcastle in Round 1 and again last Saturday against the Wests Tigers.

Friend has passed the NRL’s cognition testing after each knock to allow him to return to the field.

While the 35-year-old has not suffered chronic after-effects such as headaches, the Titans have been vigilant in following concussion protocols and put Friend through a pre-training session yesterday to assess his recovery.

“He’s had a couple of knocks and we just wanted to see how he went (after training), so he’s had a bit of a sweat up early and we’ll make a decision on him,’’ coach Neil Henry said.

“He has had a couple (of head knocks), so we just want to make sure under the protocol that he’s right and he’s not under duress, that he’s not getting headaches.

“It’s a precautionary thing so we’ll see how he pulls up and make the decision about whether or not he goes to Canberra.’’

With co-captain William Zillman also out with a calf strain, the Titans will be without a captain if Friend misses tomorrow night’s game.

Henry would not nominate a leader but it’s expected Greg Bird would take the reins, as he has during Friend’s absences from the field so far this season.

Friend out of Titans-Raiders
http://www.nrl.com/

Titans captain Nathan Friend will miss Saturday's clash with the Raiders after copping two heavy head knocks in the opening three games of the season.

The 35-year-old was forced from the field in Round 1 against the Knights and also last week against the Wests Tigers and did not take part in Friday's final captain's run. Kierran Moseley will travel with the team to Canberra as cover.

Although Friend passed the in-game concussion tests on both occasions Titans coach Neil Henry said they would show caution after the two head knocks in quick succession.

"He's had a couple of knocks so we just wanted to see how he went so he's had a sweat-up early and he'll hang around," Henry said.

"We just want to make sure that he's right and not under any duress, that he's not getting headaches and things like that.

"He's passed the test to go back on the field each time but there's no doubt he's been stung a couple of times. So far it hasn't been a real problem for him but there is a protocol to go through where you are on restricted duties early in the week - there's no contact obviously - and then you start building up the amount of work you do.

"As long as you don't regress to any headaches, dizziness, other side effects normally you're OK.

"It's a bit of precautionary thing so we'll have to see how he pulls up."

With William Zillman already sidelined with a calf complaint the withdrawal of Friend will open the door for Greg Bird to assume the Titans captaincy a month after he was overlooked for the top job.

One of the Titans' best in each of their three games to date, Bird is displaying the type of form that made him an automatic selection in New South Wales and Kangaroo teams, his roving role at lock forward bringing an extra dimension to the Titans attack.

We can win this is we can hold the ball and get Moseley on ASAP. One thing I can't understand is why Canberra got a zero tackle when Ashley Taylor the a pass backwards to no-one and raiders picked it up. Then later the raiders knocked on and we get a first tackle after Paasi jumps on it. If we get a fair go in the second half, we can win this game. Just need a bit more discipline and to tighten up the ruck. Raiders milking penalties.

I agree with al the negative comments that were written as I was watching and was expecting to come on here and agree. Dumb errors, dropped ball, horrible one on one missed tackles, no attack, terrible kicking game, Ryan James back to giving penalties (but I thought he was our best) but then..............wtf. Clearly the worst performance of the year and the Raiders lost that, we didn't win it but care factor zero.
Guts, and somehow we stayed in the game, and that's something this team hasn't had for a while. And to play that poorly and win, well that is a good sign.
Off to the bar.

Shillington I just wanna punch him then hug him 5 minutes later always has me on edge imagine if he took the drops out of his game.. First 20 mins we are getting shredded up the middle shillington drops then falls for dummy... Few sets later quick play the ball passi not tying in and McQueen slides off.. Falls for dummy... And losing Greg when he came back and Ryan James coming on helped.. I think he got under frank Paul's skin and caused him to blow it ( I think Ricky might actually strangle frank Paul in the sheds)

The 2nd penalty he gave was on the first tackle after a fast play the ball which they took the 2... He was all over the ball... He knows exactly how not to give penalty he's the most penalised player in the Comp.. But 2s better then 6.. It's not hard to think he gave it on purpose.. Here's something encourage all you guys to do grab the ref mic feed when it's available.. Shillington WTF? Drops the ball cold (1 every week) and then gets James' spiders passed to him. Those two tries would give Gimli Stuart ulcers. And let's be honest, if that last try was grounded then that touchy wasn't Olive's cousin. But who cares, next Friday night takes on a different perspective.

OMG I thought I was going to have a heart attack in the last few minutes. To come back like we did was great to see and for once in a very long time the decision went our way in the end. Well done lads, amazing spirit and something we have been lacking in the last few seasons. I am one proud Titan right now.

PS: Had to laugh at the crowd at the end, especially when the refs had to be escorted off the ground by security. :ugh:

that was a true 2010 win. not a lot of class, but we kept in the match somehow and never gave in. we made it a prelim with efforts like that.

Refs carved us ALL GAME. every niggly thing they did was a dropped ball for us. i think their pommy comp player influx has added some 1980's style crap into the ruck.

James gave away some penalties, but without him and bird oh lawd we get spanked. they kept us from getting blown away.

Just very proud of the courage to come back

oh, and Ash showed alot of maturity chasing the points. no glory balls, just solid ball movement.

as for the final try... i think any of the 16 teams in the NRL would expect it to go their way if they were Olive, and all 16 would hope it was a no try if they were the raiders... but it really did look more likely to be a try with the last frame showing the ball moving closer to the ground. hard to take, but no worse than the cows last night.

Not a lot of hooking options in the NRL really, should we go and search super league? their forwards have been good more often than not lately.

oh almost forgot PULU!!! he is starting to make some beasty runs. needs to stop running holes in traffic where its almost impossible to catch the ball... but he is coming along very nicely when you think about his round 1 effort. another value player, on a fraction of Myles type money, putting in effort incomparable to Myles.

We are a solid squad with some developing class and a healthy attitude towards hard work and grinding when its not going your way

I only saw the last 20 months minutes (lucky me). The go forward from the pack was excellent. Moseley was quite impressive in attack. A bit streaky and one poor pass but I can accept that.
The best part was remembering all the tweets that the ABC guys were reading out on the radio early in the second half. The Raiders fans were gloating already. Hahaha

What a character building win. Absolutely outstanding.

Seriously was considering giving up and watching something else, but we finished so strong off the back of playing smart. Stopped dropping the ball.

We defended set after set on our line, showing how much heart this team has. We are a new team with a new attitude. Fought through average referee calls as well.

Side note, how good has Ryan James been! Finally cut out the stupid penalties and is doing the hard work. Been one of our most consistent this year.

Gutsy effort. Didn't really play well, but after they scored some early points, our defence kept us in the game.

Like what we have in Olive. Hasnt really seen much open space, but is a big body with agility and defence has been solid. Interesting his try at the end he had swapped sides of the field as Hoffman was injured. Not sure Hoffy gets over there. Also was subtle, but the way Taylor froze the defence and then gave Olive some room was all class.

Given Elgey and Taylor will be our halves going forward next year, how do you all think Tyrone Roberts would go in Mortimer's role off the bench. Is creative and has some size. Defensively he is ok. Not a 40 tackle a game hooker, but in an interchange role might be ok.

i wondered the same ausphin about Tyrone.

I wonder is Cam Cullen is better suited to it though. bit more of a nugget who can rip and tear.

Ash has gone from Junior halves partner to guiding the team inside 4 games. It is like LG all over again, but with obviously a different skill set

We don't win games like this without James... He has been outstanding this year. Bird has been at his best as well. The grit shown by the team to hang in and defend their line and then work their way back into the game is a credit to Henry and the leaders on the field.
We won't win the comp with this team (yet) but we will be competitive against half of the teams in the NRL and that gives us hopes for finals football.

Apparently maybe ligament damage. Hope not. Don't want to even think about what might (or who might) happen if Roberts is out.

i know nothing as to his health, but if he is out... Henry's choice will be interesting. I hope Cullen gets a crack, and Morts would be a travesty.

Bird for all his failed efforts in the 6 for us in the past seemed to spread the ball to first Dougie to set up Taia then found Ash with a long ball so Ash could get it to Olive. I dont want bird at 6 by any means, but if its him or Morts....

Pulu is now a must pick on the bench, and Maybe James needs to start. We are a much better side with him on the field. give him a rest at 30 as he can play good minutes, then bring him on at 50 to run out the game. We cant keep going down by 10 or 12 when hes not there.

Also... After the first half i had shillo driving to piggabean or pizzey next week, but he went some way to redeeming himself with a few decent charges and then his try... so he gets an extension, but for a period tonight i was thinking Petty deserves his spot once he is healthy.

I don't want another rookie in there with Taylor. Looking after his future is heaps more important than winning in 2015. I have been very critical of the likes of Bird in the halves in the past but if Roberts injury is short term I would support it in this instance.

Fingers crossed that he is OK!!

The first half showed how courageous Greg Bird is. He was absolutely belted several times and never stopped bouncing back. He copped a face palm at marker which sat him on his back. That should have been a penalty. Later when the fracas started he was head butted on the ground. I know we have all commented in past seasons on his attempts at milking penalties but tonight he was treated very poorly by the refs.
I loved the grinding win, Shillo was rocks and diamonds, Pulu, Zeb and McQueen were very solid. Our last tackle options were not great tonight, but enough of them came off to get the chocolates.

Canberra's last few matches where they have faded out in the last quarter could be a sign that only eight interchanges will not favour the teams with big boppers. They carved us up early through the middle and then our fitter more mobile forwards were running at a defence that looked totally gassed.
I normally watch the replay before allocating points, however I am pretty sure Big Dark will be getting a chunk of mine.

Titans could lose points for 14 men

Gold Coast somehow got out of Canberra with a victory, but their two competition points could be in jeopardy due to and interchange mix-up.

Titans prop David Shillington is believed to have strayed on to the field of play while five-eighth Tyrone Roberts was seeking treatment for a knee injury.

Ultimately, Roberts stayed in play for as long as he could to save the team an interchange and coach Neil Henry, who questioned why the interchange official would hand over the substitution card before Roberts was off the field, said Shillington was on the field for only "about five seconds".

If Shillington is found to have run on to the field before Roberts was over the sideline, the Titans risk losing two points that also came about in controversial circumstances.

Best part of that game was the players reactions when they knew they had won it. Good to see us celebrate as a team. There is improvement needed across the park defensively and credit is due for McQueen in containing Papalli tonight as well as everyone mentioned above.

Hopefully we can sign Friend for another year because he is the difference between last years and this years team.

I'm still happy for us to sign more backs.

Good, lucky win.

I dont think we'll lose any points over the shillington thing. He was on for less then 5 seconds and never left the ingoal, leaving once he saw tyrone was staying. t's more of an issue with the ground official for letting him on in the first place.

Very gritty result, proves that even though you mightn't have big name players you only need solid ones who are commited to their roles. Taylor is a superstar in the making, possibly better then DCE and he's a homemade Queensland kid. winner buy their. Him and Elgey should win us a premiership in years to come. Pulu has also suprised me, he's doing very good. Not sure how pettybourne is going to get back into the side.

When Roberts went down yesterday my mind flashed back to in 2013 when Cartwright used Zillman in the no. 6. Hopefully common sense prevails and we get to see either Cullen or even Birdy play in the halves over Zillman and Morts. Need Friend back too, we should really look at signing a good defensive hooker for next year. But i'd be more than happy if we signed segeyaro regardless. We need more creativity out of dummy half, and mosely shows signs of that, but he's just not ready yet, maybe another 1-2 years and he'll be right. Maybe friend can stay for another year and Segeyaro off the bench?

I don't think we need sarginson or Hurrell. Having seen how Gl went yesterday in the U20's i think he has great potential. Olive has really impressed me, and so has Davis. We got Carty jr coming through our U20's as a second rower and he looks alright. haven't seen BK in a while but he was looking good. maybe introduce some fo these kids to QLD cup?

Anyway, we are playing a different feel of footy this year and people are starting to recognise that. Very good time to be a GC supporter. Our future looks bright and as long as the NRL keeps us out of the way of Greg Florimo, I sense a bright future for the Titans.

When it's all said and done I look back on previous years and just feel there is a huge lift in their belief. Stability in and around the club, good leadership and structure , players stepping up and just believing in themselves. It's such, for me anyway , a refreshing feeling rather than that out of the stomach churning from years gone by.

Some of the comments on this game and others, seemingly ignore the fact that we have and had some of our top playmakers out. As usual there is criticism aplenty. All gets a bit old to me to be honest.

I'd rather stay on this bus so I guess those that don't want the ride can get off. Support these blokes and the coaching staff, we are winning games people and everyone had us as wooden spooners before a ball was kicked.

These guys won't win the comp this year but I will be looking for them in the top 8 if they can maintain and improve what they are doing now.

I am so thankful we have King in charge.

Keep it going fellas a great result.

I watched the game with a mate at a local pub. It really was a great victory built on the Titans spirit not to give in. To claw back all those points late in the game was impressive. As Pete said we really missed Friend, it was telling.

I don't think our points are at risk either. I hope Roberts is ok.

Always hard to win in Canberra and you could hear how hostile the crowd was. Another famous victory.

Dont know why people are blowing up about that Try call? The touchy called he saw the ball on the ground(which I think it did as it as it was cm's away from the ground before it goes out of view with a Canberra player falling on it, hence forcing it down even more).
Sure the cameras didnt show it on the ground, but the linesman had a different angle from behind, prob the best spot to see it. He called it, move on. Just saw Johns blowing up about it on the Sunday Footy Show, but I dont think he understood he linesman called he saw it on the ground.
anyway, Olive is looking good, however one more off-season in the gym will do him wonders I rkn... Anyone else think he is lacking that muscle when you look at him? I think you cant bring Davis back in, Its Olives spot to lose. Any ideas why he changed sides? I thought he was right side and hoffman was left?

Well the linesman saw it on the ground and called it... wasnt really luck if he saw it down.

Another thing, the 14 man thing... I thought the fact the NRL has their own offical looking after it puts them at fault. Watching back the vison he would of thought roberts went off the far side(he was pretty much touching the sideline) then he took shillingtons card as he thought he was off, thats not our blue. Cant see us getting docked two points due to it seeing he was on for 2 secs.

Yeah he has a little bit of strike about him but is a left side player just as Jimmy is a right side player. Olives best quality in 20's and NSW cup was actually his ability to get on the outside of his opposite centre off his right foot step. Have seen him do exactly what he did to score that try verse countless teams as well, gas to the outside, make contact and spin downward to get the ball over the line.

Very promising young centre. Would like to see him on the left because Jimmy may in fact run rings around Hoffman with his pace.
