View Full Version : Serbian rugby league eyes World Cup

Rugby League is taking greater hold in Serbia with the announcement of two in-coming tours to the country; the first domestic under 16?s tournament being played in Belgrade and venues revealed for their fixtures in the forthcoming European Preliminary World Cup Tournament.

England Lionhearts will arrive in the nation?s capital on the 30th April and they will play two internationals against the Serbians on May 1st in Belgrade and May 6th in Novi Sad. . They will also take part in a nines tournament in Pancevo, east of Belgrade on Wednesday 3rd.

Following them into the country, the British Police will arrive towards the end of May to play two matches against a regional side and then the full national team.

Domestically, six teams took part in the first under 16?s tournament held indoors in a huge hall in Belgrade on artificial grass this weekend. A number of youngsters new to the sport competed, with Dorcol emerging winners after beating Vozdovac in the decider.

For their ties on the road to the 2008 World Cup in Australia, Serbia will play Georgia on Saturday 29th April in Belgrade and will host Russia in Novi Sad on June 4th.
