In addition to some Ipswich boys already mentioned as waiting to hear whether they were successful in the recent NYC trials, including backrowers Raiden Fonoti and Kristian Petty, centre Sese Feiloaki also trialled. All three have or are trialling with other clubs as well. We are building a strong presence in Ipswich, so hopefully we can get these boys signed if they impressed the right people. I have a huge wrap on Raiden Fonoti, he reminds me of Boyd Cordner of the Roosters.

Bit of a random question but I just saw a tweet saying the Titans arent connected to any high schools in SE Qld and are apparently "locked out" from their local juniors. This isn't true right? The Titans obviously have some link to schools like PBC dont they?

No mate not correct, we have agreements with a number of schools, both on the coast and in Ipswich.

Ipswich's Phillip Sami (fullback), Gold Coast local Josh Ralph (half) and Brisbane Souths David Pritchard (wing) will also be involved in the NYC squad for next season. David Pritchard has already played one QCup 1st grade game for Souths

Burleigh Heads half back Josh Rogers who scored ten tries in seven games in the U19 Gold Coast competition will also be in the squad, he is a goal kicker as well. He also played some QCup Colts as well

Storm utility Aiden Taua looks like another new signing for our NYC next year. From a size perspective keep an eye on giant young front rower Doryaan Hape Apiata, if he is in the side size is not an issue. He is also very skilful with a good offload

The make-up of the half and five eight next year will be very intriguing with Josh Fauid likely set for one position. There is plenty of competition for the other spot with the likes of returning player Braydon McMahon, and new additions, Josh Ralph, Josh Rogers and Tye Barry. MM eligible boys AJ Brimson and Bostyn Hakaraia also training with the NYC squad over the off season. Good position for Woolf to be in. Great to see so many MM eligible boys getting an opportunity to train with the NYC squad.

Pretty sure all titan contracted boys in MM who are u18 (not u17 apart from Darius) are doing 20s preseason up until Xmas before they rejoin MM. I would say Bostyn would be the favorite of the bunch and my selection to join Fauid in halves.

13-11-15, 04:08 PM
Former Bronco NYC and Qld u18 centre Junior Taefu another signee, he will certainly provide some size and skill to the side for next year. Hopefully we have a good season, the Titans are certainly looking far and wide for the right sort of player for the squad.

If you are looking for a young dynamic forward to keep an eye on next year, watch out for young Souths Logan second rower Justin Fai. He is a former Brisbane Stingers U17 Player of the year, as was his brother George Fai of the Broncos. We have signed a few boys from Souths Logan MM and QCup Colts, Justin Fai could be the best of them, the former Logan Brothers player is very talented and adds to an already crowded back row with the likes of Shane Wright, Nathan Watts, Sam Swift Blake Lenehan etc. He has played a lot of front row in MM but played a lot of bacrow when he progressed to QCup Colts.

Good to see centre/second row Danial Brownbill back with the Titans after two years with the North Queensland Cowboys. Even though his is still eligible for MM in 2016, like others he will train with the NYC squad over the off season and then link with his MM squad, although I note that he has been named in both the Gold Coast squad and the Easts Tigers MM squad. Last year he scored five tries playing MM for East Tigers. It will be interesting to see where Titans coaches think is future lies in terms of position.

The video is old but it is still a reflection on the play of new NYC David Pritchard from South Logan David Pritchard. If you saw any of his MM games this year, he can see why he has already played QCup. With TRD, GL, Jed Cartwright and Brian Kelly we are spoilt for choice for outside backs who know their way to the try line.

Hooker Ryan Cameron who was one of the successful NYC trialists is apparently leading by example in NYC training. He captained both Easts Tigers CC and MM and also Met East U15's. Interestingly in rugby he played fly half and thus understandably his kicking out of dummy half is more than decent. I thought Tamworth's Cory Manicharos would be first choice hooker but Ryan Cameron will give him a run for his money by the sound of it.

Looking forward to the first NYC trial on 6 February against the Melbourne Storm.

RenegadeGC
13-12-15, 10:28 PM
Cory Manicharos trialled on Thursday night for the Titans 20s fringe players vs Titans MM side. Looked very sharp out of dummy half. Injury to Josh Ralph didnt look to good, medical buggy had to cart him off. Fred Kiel looked strong in the centres as well was good for them. For Titans MM, Liam Pakau, Jordan Birch and Darius Farmer all put in strong performances. Titans MM side looks very very good and I think they actually won the game. They will be tough to beat in MM this year and I expect them to do very very well. Will be disappointed if they dont.

Good luck to local winger Riley Yates who has been named in the Souths NYC squad. Even though he is a local I can understand this one. The Titans NYC squad has a lot of competition for a wing sport such as David Pritchard, Phillip Sami, Brian Kelly and one or two trialling, so I can understand the situation for both Yates and the Titans.

Looking forward to hopefully seeing Brian Kelly make his debut either in the nines or NRL trials. As a reminder of his ability below is a link to the interstate U20's game where he scored 4 tries, his third one is brilliant.

New NYC recruit Josh Rogers has had an interesting rugby league career to date. He started playing rugby league in Western Australia, and actually started playing 1st grade at 17, In 2014 he also played for Western Australia in the SG Ball competition, before moving to Burleigh in 2015 where he was part of the Burleigh premiership winning U19 side as well as making his QCup Colts debut.

Caught up with a friend over the New Year from NSW central coast, said that we have a real good one in NYC signee Shaun Hinton. He is another to be successful from NYC trial. My mate knows rugby league better than me and said Hinton is a tough solid young second rower who has been playing 1st grade in the Group 3 competition since 2014 and is someone who will become a bit of a fan favourite because of the amount of work on the field that he does. Looking forward to seeing him and the other new players against Melbourne at Langlands Park on 6 February.

mdrew
02-01-16, 09:57 PM
Interesting to see if former NZ centre Richard Holani previously from Wesley College can break into the NYC thought process for 2016, he was solid in U19 football this year and played well for us against Samoa recently in an U18 Invitational side.

mdrew
03-01-16, 09:12 AM
Successful trialist Ngangarra Barker shapes as an interesting player in NYC in 2016. He has played the last three seasons with the Newcastle Knights, the last two in SG Ball where he played mainly at fullback, scoring nine tries across his two SG Ball seasons and also scored six tries in Harold Matthews in 2013. At the conclusion of the U18 competition, he played for Maitland in the local Newcastle competition, scoring five tries in the U19 competition before graduating to their 1st grade side where he played four games and scored two tries. Interestingly he played mainly at half in first grade. In previous seasons for the Maitland Pickers he also played five eight for the U18 side. In 2014 he was also part of the NSW emerging origin squad. He is certainly a utility player with the ability to play fullback, wing, centre, five eight and now adding halfback to his resume.

mdrew
03-01-16, 09:43 AM
Another Newcastle junior player will also be part of the 2016 NYC squad, being front rower Max King from the Maitland Pickers club, which was also the club of Ngangarra Barker. King played the 2015 season with the Knights SG Ball squad, playing every game off the bench and scored one try in their match against the Illawarra Steelers before starting in the front row for Maitland the remained of the season. We are starting to get some real size in the NYC squad, combined with some solid football skills. I believe that he is the son of former Gold Coast Seagulls front rower David King, who played eight first grade games across the 1991 and 1992 seasons.

mdrew
03-01-16, 10:16 AM
Another interesting addition to the NYC squad is Wellington NZ local Friedrich Keil who comes from a rugby background and played his schoolboy rugby for St Bernards College in Wellington. This season he played his rugby league for the Wainuiomata Lions in the Wellington rugby league competition, scoring four tries including a try in their grand final loss to the Te Aroha Eels. He also was part of the Wellington Orca's National Premiership side and scored one in his two games. From what I understand he played the majority of this season on the wing but as noted by RenegadeGC he played in the centres in the MM/NYC trial a few weeks ago. He adds some size in the outside backs.

mdrew
03-01-16, 10:39 AM
Inverell Hawks Bradon Sunderland is yet another player who was successful in obtaining an NYC contract after the recent trial. He played this year in the Group 3 first grade competition and a successful junior representative career for the Greater Northern Tigers, including being a key member of the 2014 U18 winning Greater Northern side when they defeated Central Coast in the Country championship final. A team mate in that side was another new NYC 2016 recruit in Cory Manicharos. He played the majority of his junior rugby league in the back row for Tingha but moved to the centres in Senior football and scored 11 tries across 16 matches and started in the centres in Inverell's Grand Final victory against Moree 26-24.

Could Ngangarra barker be an option of the bench as a utility?

mdrew
03-01-16, 11:57 AM
Certainly has the versatility to do so, the squad for the first trial against the Storm will be very interesting, looking forward to going and having a look

Could Ngangarra barker be an option of the bench as a utility?

mdrew
05-01-16, 02:31 PM
Aiden Taua is another trialist who was successful at the open NYC trial. In 2015 he played two games off the bench for the Melbourne Storm NYC side, scoring a try against the St George Dragons in Round 20. In 2014 he played for Kelston Boys High in NZ and was predominantly a second rower. He transitioned to play mainly hooker in Australia, including playing nine games in the Victorian 1st grade competition for the Sunbury Tigers scoring seven tries in the process. He has a bit of size to go with decent speed out of dummy half and may shape as a decent utility option off the bench. I believe that prior to 2014 he also played some centre.

mdrew
05-01-16, 03:06 PM
Kurt Bernard is a giant young front rower originally from Auckland NZ who moves across to Australia in 2014 to play for the Melbourne Storm, In 2015 he played mainly SG Ball for the Storm alternating between front row and second row. In 2015 he played eight games for the Storm in the NYC competition scoring two tries against the Roosters and the Wests Tigers. Across those eight games he averaged only eight hit ups per game but averaged around 13 metres per hit up. He also played one 1st grade trial match for the Storm in the 2015 pre season.

The 195cm, 115 kg front rower is currently training with our first grade squad and should form a formidable NYC front row with another new recruit being Morgan Boyle. The training with the 1st grade squad and increased emphasis on endurance will help him maintain his powerful running throughout a game.

mdrew
05-01-16, 03:17 PM
Canberra NYC recruit Morgan Boyle had quite an impressive 2015 NYC season. He averaged around 75m per game on an average of 6.1 hit ups, thus averaging 12.2m per hit up. He also averaged 17.7 tackles per game. The 193cm, 110kg front rower is another NYC eligible played training with the first grade squad. He started his junior representative football as a centre before moving to the forwards in the SG Ball competition.

He is the son of David Boyle, who played 117 games for the raiders.

mdrew
06-01-16, 06:03 PM
I will be interested to see where Ben Woolf plays new recruit Junior Taefu in the coming season. Taefu has spend the majority of the last couple of seasons in the centres, including playing there for Qld U18's in 2014 and Souths Logan last year. He also played eight games for the Broncos NYC side in 2014 at centre. He is around 100kg and 185cm or so and has good footwork so it is not unthinkable to think that he may have a future in the backrow

Returning outside back Christian Mika is another player in contention for a wing spot. Centre/wing is probably the most crowded position in the squad with Brian Kelly and Jed Cartwright the only two set. Some of the Titans best against the Storm included half Josh Fauid (best player on the field), wing David Pritchard centre Junior Taefu, five eight Tye Barry, second rowers Justin Fai and Kelepi Faukafa, front rower Max King and hooker Corey Manicharos. All round a very good performance and the Titans could have scored 50 or more. A few MM eligible boys also played including Blake Lenehan who smashed a Storm front rower in the last 10 minutes in one of the best tackles that I have seen, superb technique. The Storm were poor with what was essentially their top squad whilst a lot of good Titans players are either playing 9's or against Tweed tomorrow. Props to the players and Woolf good job boys. We only had two out mate, unfortunately not the best performance, Got absolutely smashed by Broncos fans laughing and asking what other young players they can steal from us, man it was a tough night to be a Titans fan, the Broncos fans really paid out on me for wearing a Titans shirt, really copped a bit which was a little disappointing to be honest with you all. Hopefully a better performance in round one coming up, but what would I know considering there was just me and my friends, I.e. just me.

That's a disappointing score after the Melbourne trounce. Did we play that bad or were Broncs that good. Mdrew who was missing from our 20s team for that game? Do Broncos have many of their team back from 2015 and were they playing?

The Broncos were good, but the Titans did struggle, there is no getting around that. The players missing were GL and Shane Wright injured. Brian Kelly obviously played in the first grade trial. The Broncos side were very strong and can not think off the top of my head who else would come back in and yes the Broncos have quite a few returning like Keegan Hipgrave, Keenan Palasia, George Fai, Will Brimson, Jayden Su’a etc plus some new boys like the Elliot boys who were with us last year.

Seriously that's BS copping crap from opposition supporters in just a trial match. I don't even cop that when I wear my Titans (or Manly) gear to Broncos games at Suncorp. I'm sure you have their faces etched in your mind for later because what goes around comes around.

It was not too far away from what I thought would be the likely side mate, they certainly should not have problem scoring through the back line, fingers crossed for a good solid start to the season for the young boys.

I've enjoyed the last couple of weeks being able to watch the U20's on TV. That number 8 is a big unit, Bernard. Good to see TRD and GL play. It would appear that the U20's have the same defensive issues as the 1st grade team though. Couple more years and hopefully we hold these guys and it will be great.
