Titans must learn to win: Zillman

Ed Jackson
April 6, 2015, 10:55 am

Five games into the 2015 NRL season and Gold Coast star Will Zillman says the Titans have forgotten something pretty important - how to win.

The Titans' 26-16 derby loss to rivals Brisbane last Friday leaves them with just one win and four losses this season, and was their third straight close defeat at home following narrow losses to Newcastle and Wests Tigers earlier in the campaign.

Will Zillman and the Titans. Source: AAP
It's a stark contrast to the start of last year when the Titans won five of their first six matches, mostly by narrow margins.

Zillman says it's simply a matter of re-discovering that lost art of grinding out tough wins.

"It's about learning how to win," Zillman said.

"You need to grind out wins throughout the year and we're just not doing that at the moment.

"We had one close win against the Sharks but there's three other close games that we feel we had the chance to win and we just didn't take it. We really need to learn how to do that."

Since ending round six last year top of the ladder the Titans have picked up just five wins from 23 games including just one win at home, a golden-point success in last year's final game of the season against Canterbury.

"It's certainly about the confidence," Zillman said.

"It does become a habit and you learn how to win and you learn how to grind those tough games out. That's what we're learning at the moment."

"At the end of every season there'll be five or six games where you say we should have won those games but the cold hard fact is you didn't.

"You need to learn from those matches, move on from them, but learn from them too."

this is gods honest truth that i thought with the expansion of nrl360 into 3 nights, plus sterlo on the couch that the extra time and coverage would allow more analysis and evaluation of players.

in the AFL version, they are relentless in their exposure of players not performing.

Gold Coast Titans announce unchanged line-up to take on Eels

TRAVIS MEYN Gold Coast Bulletin April 07, 2015 4:34PM

GOLD Coast Titans coach Neil Henry has named an unchanged team for Saturday’s trip to Parramatta.

The Titans suffered a 26-16 loss to Brisbane on Good Friday which was their fourth defeat from five matches this year.

WHY THE TITANS V BRONCOS CLASH WAS ALMOST IN SYDNEY (http://www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/sport/nrl/titans-v-broncos-gold-coast-were-hours-away-from-shifting-queensland-derby-clash-to-sydney/story-fnj9yd9w-1227292613567)

But Henry is sticking solid with his players for the clash against the unpredictable Eels.

Captain Nate Myles (cork) and emerging prop Agnatius Paasi (ankle) will be monitored throughout the week but Henry said he expected the same 17 to take the field.

“For large parts of the game (against Brisbane) it was a pretty good effort,” he said.

“We’re a bit limited with who’s available due to a few injuries but I’d like to show faith in the 17.

“Paasi has a sprain to a ligament in the foot but he’ll be out of the moon boot tomorrow and we’ll see how he trains.

“Matt White could step in, he hasn’t played for a couple of weeks but he’s training well.”

That's because the NRL is a closed shop. The "commentators" on most of these shows are recent ex players and they aren't brave enough to call out anyone for fear of offending. I still shake my head every time I hear one of them say that Zillman is fast.....

best theyll do is make fun of someone if they do something funny, or maybe critique a forward pack or halves for not delivering, but its rare for someone to cop a well deserved bake.

i think NRL players are so precious that they would stop going on shows and do even less media. they dont understand it yet.

Nate Myles makes spirited bid to beat corked thigh injury to be fit to play against the Eels
TRAVIS MEYN •
Gold Coast Bulletin •
April 08, 2015 12:00AM

TITANS captain Nate Myles has been secretly battling a painful leg injury with another “nasty cork” hampering his preparation for the Gold Coast’s trip to Parramatta.

Myles copped a heavy hit to his left leg in the Titans’ 26-16 loss to Brisbane last Friday with the injury compounding a nagging cork he has been managing since the start of the season.

Myles clashed with teammate Caleb Binge during a training session in early March.

The Queensland Origin forward was so concerned by the collision he underwent X-rays that cleared him of a broken leg.

But the deep bruising took close to a month to subside with Myles finally feeling free in the Gold Coast’s only win of the year against Cronulla two weeks ago. Just as he started to come good, Myles found himself in pain against the Broncos.

The 29-year-old’s commitment to recovery and rehab has him on track to face the Eels this weekend and Titans physiotherapist Greg Condon said the skipper would benefit from a long turnaround.

“It’s a pretty nasty cork. It swelled up straight away during the game,” he said.

“It’s reasonable. He should be all right because we’ve got a longer turnaround from a Friday night but if it was shorter he’d be at a push to play.

“They’re harder than people think to turn around in a week but with the eight-day turnaround he should be OK.

“He’s been using the ice machine 24-7 and is getting treatment on it.

“He’ll do some light running (today) then hopefully train properly at the captain’s run.

“He had just come good (from the first cork). He trained well that week.”

Myles is no stranger to putting his body through pain, having played with numerous injuries throughout his decorated career.

His coach, Neil Henry, said Myles was on a modified training program to rest his body.

“He got another knock to the same calf he had before,” he said.

“That’s all that’s restricting him. He did a bit of contact work (yesterday). You rest your more senior players a little bit and he certainly puts his body on the line every week. He earned a couple of days off.”

Henry yesterday named an unchanged line-up for the Eels clash with prop Matt White on standby for Agnatius Paasi (ankle).

White has had an injury-interrupted start to the season but Henry backed the workman to perform if needed.

Titans seek to silence hostile Eels crowd
Tue 07 Apr, 2015, 6:15pm
By Tony Webeck, Chief Queensland Correspondent, NRL.com

http://www.nrl.com/image.ashx?src=/Portals/NRL/images/41/41088_39_2.jpg&cn=620x349

The Titans will seek to break a worrying point-scoring drought early in games in order to keep a Pirtek Stadium jam-packed with passionate Parramatta fans subdued when the two teams meet on Saturday afternoon.

Despite wins over Manly and South Sydney at home the Eels sit outside the top eight with just two wins heading into Round 6, while the Titans have just the sole victory over the Sharks in Round 4 in their win column for the opening five weeks of the season.

Dating back to August 2013 the Eels have lost just two from 13 games at Pirtek Stadium and with Parramatta boasting one of the most passionate supporter bases in the NRL Titans coach Neil Henry knows some early strikes are key in keeping them quiet.

Gold Coast have scored only two tries all season inside the first 20 minutes of games and have not scored more than one try in the first half since Round 1, squandering numerous opportunities early against the Broncos last week.

Having named an unchanged squad to that which took the field against Brisbane, Henry said it was critical to show composure early if they hope to keep the noise levels down within Pirtek Stadium.

"The times I've played there and it's been a good healthy crowd it is a noisy stadium and it's a great atmosphere," Henry said on Tuesday. "I think the players appreciate the noisy crowd, it's just all in the mix for the atmosphere in terms of who they are playing in front of. It just adds to the occasion.

"You can normally silence the crowd if you get some early points but they're a different team this year Parramatta. They go for the full 80 and they'll be trying to make amends for their performance at the back-end of the game on Monday [against the Tigers].

"Their following's been great this season and they'll be looking forward to defending that record at home. As long as we're prepared to get into the battle with them I'm sure we can match them.

"We're expecting a hostile crowd and a physical game."

The Titans' horror record of posting early points is further denting the confidence of a team in desperate need of a change of fortune. Gold Coast have been victorious in only four of their past 21 games stretching back to Round 9 last season and have had some refereeing decisions go against them early in games in 2015 that have further dented their confidence.

When capitalising on momentum is such a critical aspect of the modern game Henry conceded that frustration at being unable to break down the Brisbane defence led to fundamental errors when in possession.

"There's an element of frustration that we didn't score points," Henry admitted. "That first 10 minutes we had four or five sets – and in retrospect it's easy – but maybe that second penalty we got we should have taken the two points and possession and just reset ourselves by going back and having a yardage set from the kick-off and getting back into it again.

"It's very hard to attack consistently from 10 metres out. You don't have the depth in your play to try and get momentum so full credit to the Broncos defence, they scrambled well and kept us out with some desperate defence and we helped out by turning the ball over too often."

Great team but it won't happen while Zillman is at the club as it seems he will never be dropped. I think he could score a try for the opposing team and would still be picked to play the next week. Time to get a campaign going to get rid of him.

Also agree with James without the penalties last week I would say he was close to our best player.

Great to see Zillman having a great game playing for the Eels. I just don't know why he is kept in the team but Henry will find some excuse to keep him in the team.

James needs to play off the bench although I think the first penalty was a bit harsh as Hoppa was dropping to the ground.

Taylor and Bird have had great games so far as has Moseley.

It's not the errors that concern me. I can handle that. It's what he did after that which concerned me. He disappeared, no longer took the line on and became more pedestrian by catching and passing. We've seen better from him thats for sure. I think he's feeling more than just the pressure from Parra, he's feeling the pressure of negotiating his contract.

Great confidence boosting win beating Parra at home.

-Roberts is an absolute freak and was no doubt our best on the field today! Hopefully Neil and co are in deep negotiations to a new long-term contract (3 years).

-Myles stepped up and saved a cetain try near the end there. Definitely earning himself a new contract to finish his career at the Titans. Not promising that he said 'a few things have changed my mind over the last few weeks'.

-Elgey definitely had his mind on something else today. Was not terrible but made a few silly errors. Really hoping he keeps his place in the team but fearing that Mortimer may find his way into the team even though none of us want this :(

-Moseley is our future hooker no doubt. He adds the spark and we look so sharp with him on. Really liking the rotation with Simpkins giving him a rest for 10 minutes.

-Zillman didn't play that bad today, not good but not bad either. Still would love to see Crampton given a go.

-Mead once again showed heaps of heart and effort. That try at the end there was superb, keeping his legs in and grounding it. Our right side is dangerous in attack and is getting better in defence.

One of the major reasons we won is because we stopped giving away silly penaties and we held onto the ball. Just shows what we are capable of when we are disciplined. UP THE TITANS!

King definitely needs to be congratulated! He has turned us around and we are looking so improved this year despite being 2-4. This club has an exciting future both on the field and off the field!

Let's hope if the team starts winning zillman will get better (stranger things have happened right? Right????? I must say it was good to get a 13 plus win :-) it's been a while since we have put 38 points up.

Absolutely. Those of us on here with little more faith have commented previously how the team is far more watchable and today was another step forward. I see nothing but better days ahead. It was also pleasing for me to see Watmong have a bludger of a game.

I need to watch a replay to get my MOM but Taylor had to be up there as he was mammoth in defence. You could see how focused he was. Ain't no one was getting past him.

LG's cutout pass at the end is for the highlights reel.

Roberts was on fire.

Mead was on fire..

..........and the other 13 did good.

Taylor was awesome but you can't go past Roberts for MOM. Not only did he score 2 intercept tries, he also used his power and speed to barge over 2 Eels out wide and score. He also set up another for Meady and made 212m and 14 tackles. JR had an absolute blinder today.

Wow mass improvement this week, have seen glimpses over the last weeks or playing and to be honest we have played pretty good compared to last year. Starting to show some nice set plays and guys running lines haven't see titans run before. Awesome win.

good all over. but i think the stuff between the 2 twenty metres zones has been pretty good all year for us.

we are just starting to get some decent structure, or should i say, the structure we've learnt in the off season has started to click slowly week by week and was going a little bit unnoticed. but i could see us improving week on week.

there is a nucleus of a really good side here. a few people leaving, and a few more astute buys, could see us be a team to watch in the next year or two.

the suprise on Zills face when he actually got over the line was priceless....he had no idea how to get down to ground and score it. he made falling to the ground look Awkward as F%^&. lol.

good signs all round, but only if we build on it. we are barely at base camp. the road is long. the struggle real.

I have become a Luke Douglas watcher … he is playing out of his head compared to previous seasons + I give a fair bit of that to Henry and Moseley.

I also agree that Zillman had a better game but experience tells me that that's it for the year and it wasn't that great when you consider at the very least he spoilt a try at the start and along with Elgey let one in too.

''simpkins has been really good imo. quick across turf. adds more skill than i thought he would. i think in an ideal world we would have a stronger bench, but right now, everyones doing the job well and i dont want simpkins left out of the 17.

on burr. he is a lump of a lad, but when he clicks and starts just hammering forward. he could be a real big metre gaining forward.

i think the payoff for burr will be after a full year or so. but i hope we persevere as i think we will be rewarded.

I feel that if Mortimer is included in the team to face the Panthers next week than all of our momentum and structures heading into the game will be disrupted. Really want Henry to persist with the LG-Sezer combo for as long as possible.

The first half was full of opportunities lost due to errors or penalties just as we were building pressure and momentum. When we corrected that and Parra went the other way we looked like top 8 contenders. Need to see a whole lot more standing up against pressure from good sides, but gee it's fun to watch your team put a good second half together and nail a win.

Aside from the win the thing that I liked particularly in the First half it looked like that they were trying to stick to the calls/ patterns and game plan. Luke Douglas had a good game , probably his best for the last 12 months.

I wasn't able to watch yesterday so just watched it now. Really happy with the commitment shown and was good to see some real attacking plays. Also very happy with the defence.
Thought Elgey did alright. It is only his 3rd game and it is going to be interesting to see what happens when Mortimer comes back.
Big Dave Taylor was great to watch. Even when he was covered he was carrying defenders and swatting away others.

I was at the game on Saturday, and I thought Luke Douglas was a stand out. His hit ups were tough, and his energy levels didn't wane.

Paasi is such a strong player, and has a good offload.

Jimmy Roberts is such a priority resigning.

I was hassling Elgey every chance I got to resign. Greta day all round

Anyone know how dave hala and gordon went for burliegh?

Hala needed the run was good in patches with a few strong runs but nothing outstanding seemed to be carrying a fair bit of weight played for roughly 30 minutes over the whole game, Gordon tried hard, seemed to be getting involved with runs of the ruck wouldn't call anything he done outstanding though. Ioane was good had a few strong carries but played limited minutes, Jamie Dowling is a long way of first grade got caught out on numerous occasion in defence with easts targeting him and making him look ordinary he also had nothing in attack.
