NRL nomads to reject comforts of home

They won't be pampered at the $500-a-night Palazzo Versace but Gold Coast Titans coach John Cartwright is considering taking his team on the road ahead of their must-win clash against the Eels at Cbus Super Stadium on Saturday evening.

Sunday's 22-8 win over the Knights in Newcastle took the Titans to a league-best 6-2 away from home this season but their performances on the Gold Coast have been nothing short of abysmal and have the side perched on the precipice of finals contention.

Currently two points outside the top eight but with a points differential that is the worst of the top 12 teams, the Titans must find a solution to their woeful displays at home ahead of hosting the Eels, Sea Eagles (Round 23) and Bulldogs (Round 26) and coach John Cartwright admits it could be as simple as mirroring the preparation for away games that has proved so successful.

"I can guarantee you it will be no five-star hotel, it might be the Tugun Hotel," Cartwright said of taking players out of their comfort zones prior to home games.

"We've spoken about it as coaches and with the players, it's a difficult one. It's a totally different preparation when you're away as a group. We're generally away for a couple of days so it is a totally different preparation than when you're at home and you've got the families around and we just seem to handle [away games] really well.

"We're going to try and vary a few things over the coming few home games and see if we can replicate what we do away.

"We spoke this morning maybe about staying away if we can or getting to the ground a little bit later like we do when we're away, just those little things that in the end but it is all Band-Aid stuff.

"You've got to turn up with the right attitude and handle whatever's thrown at you but if we can tinker with things and see if they work."

The plan certainly garnered support from senior players Mark Minichiello and Luke Douglas, who both conceded that they are at a loss why they haven't been able to replicate good away form in front of their home fans where they have managed just two wins from nine games.

"We haven't been too good at home and we've got to change that this week," said Minichiello. "We've been really good away from home, I think we're six-from-eight away, and we haven't had too many wins at home.

"It's more mental preparation. We've got to turn up with the right attitude and turn our win-loss record at home around. Coming off a win like that [against Newcastle], we've got no excuse not to turn up on Saturday afternoon."

"I don't know about the logistics of it, the funding and all that but it could be an option. I'd be up for it," Douglas said of the prospect of going into camp the night before a home game.

"As we have done with away games, there was just a different feeling [at Newcastle on Sunday]. We go in, we're mentally prepared from the start, focused, and again the same sort of feeling.

"We rocked up to Newcastle, we were well prepared and went through our game-day routines and went off to the field and were on so to speak. It's definitely something we've got to look at."

With the celebrations surrounding the Rise For Alex Round, Cartwright even went as far as to keep his players away from the ground as long as possible so that they wouldn't be caught up in the emotion of the day.

Both Douglas and Minichiello spoke of the thrill of playing in such a big occasion and described the win as one of the best in their time at the club.

"All the fans really turned up for Alex and put on a great atmosphere for us and we happened to go out there, turn up and play some really good football and got the result we needed," Minichiello said.

"It was a very emotional day, especially for the Newcastle people, and having Alex lead the teams out... It was pretty emotional for everyone, seeing him and I thought the Newcastle Knights put on a great event for him and made it a great atmosphere.

"It's right up there as one of the best wins that we have had in the club's history. Just the atmosphere and the emotion of the game and to have s many players out through injury, I thought everyone who played at Newcastle really stood up and did the Titans proud."

It wasn't all good news though, with veteran prop Luke Bailey likely to miss the clash with Parramatta on Saturday due to a hamstring strain.

Absolute proof that these blokes are in a total comfort zone WITHOUT ACCOUNTABILITY ... this is what really cheeses me off.

First they have to be shamed into manning-up and then they have to move out to get motivated ... what next? Perhaps they would like the club to buy some more players so they can all sit back and enjoy the games ... talk about prima donnas.

Titans v Eels
Cbus Super Stadium
Saturday 5.30pm

Titans coach John Cartwright spoke with pride when claiming Sunday's victory against the Knights was one of the best in the club's history. The Titans had almost a dozen players out through injury and suspension, while also having to overcome an emotional crowd who came out to support Alex McKinnon in the RiseForAlex Round.

It was a game the Knights were supposed to win considering the circumstances, so Cartwright will hope the 22-8 result wasn't another one-off for his side as they look to repay the Cbus Super Stadium faithful with victory at home for first time since Round 6.

The Titans' home record this season has been shocking with only two wins out of nine; their last win at Robina came in April against the Broncos at a time when the Titans were surprise ladder leaders despite having a negative points differential. It also marked the last time the Titans won back-to-back games.

The only thing saving their season at the moment is an impressive 6-2 away record which is currently the NRL's best. So to simulate away games, Cartwright is tossing up the idea of taking his team into camp to replicate the environment of playing away instead of his players enjoying the creature comforts of their lavish coastal homes.

It's an idea that's been tried before – most recently by the Raiders in 2012 when then-coach David Furner trialled the move with success. Given the Titans have fallen away so badly this season, they'll take all the help they can get. Having won six of their first eight games this year, a lot has changed for the Titans since then as they have gone on to lose seven of their past nine games.

They currently sit 11th on the ladder, two places above the Eels who are level with the Titans on 20 competition points. Both sides have an inferior for-and-against to those above them on the ladder meaning that they are virtually two wins behind the eighth-placed Storm who are on 22 points.

The Eels are currently on a four-game losing streak with their last win coming against the 'Dogs in Round 14. Eels' skipper Tim Mannah stated after Parra's 32-12 loss to Souths last Friday that he still believes his side can make a late charge towards the finals and he may be right – five out of their remaining seven games are against teams lower than them on the ladder.

If they can bring the chocolates home from the Gold Coast, their remaining games are a slightly easier proposition with Cronulla (away), then three straight home games against the Raiders, Bulldogs and Sea Eagles and their final two games away against the Knights and Raiders again.

However, with only seven rounds remaining the loser of Saturday's match can probably start planning for Mad Monday, as they would be required to win five out of their next six games to make the finals.

In team news, Titans' co-captain Greg Bird returns from suspension, but they are without William Zillman, David Mead and Luke Bailey who are all missing through hamstring injuries. Aidan Sezer is still around two weeks away from returning from a pectoral injury suffered against the Broncos in Round 10. Dave Taylor will remain in the centres after impressing against the Knights with Maurice Blair and Cody Nelson added to a five-man bench.

For the Eels, Brad Arthur has named the same 17 that lost to Souths, although co-captain Tim Mannah is still absent with injury.

Watch Out Titans: The Eels current front-row pairing of Junior Paulo and Fuifui Moimoi are two of the game's most destructive runners of the ball when they’re on song. Last week Moimoi produced his best figures of the season, making 105 metres and 22 tackles, while Paulo made 116 metres against the formidable Rabbitohs pack. With Tim Mannah likely to be another week away from an injury return, this pair needs to step up to another level against the likes of Myles, Bird and Minichiello or else the Eels will face an uphill battle to remain in the contest.

Watch Out Eels: The Titans' left edge of Dave Taylor and Kalifa Faifai Loa absolutely carved up the metres against the Knights last weekend. The fledging pairing made an incredible 419 metres between one another while also combining for a total of 14 tackle breaks, two line breaks and a try scored by Taylor. The 'Coal Train' has been particularly impressive since the conclusion of the Origin Series, making 317 metres and 43 tackles in his past two outings.

Plays To Watch: Any player who has scored a combined total of 22 tries and try assists in 14 games must be doing something right. That man is Jarryd Hayne. The Eels' flyer has arguably had a career-best season and continues to blossom. Almost everything the Eels do is constructed around the 26-year-old, making it increasingly difficult for teams to defend against him because they don't know whether he'll kick, pass or run. His 14 line breaks and 77 tackle breaks this season suggest the Titans will need to be wary of Hayne's destructive running game on Saturday night.

Where It Will Be Won: With not much to split either side, accurate goal-kicking could prove the difference on Saturday night. However, both sides have struggled in that department this season with their current kick takers struggling to boot the Steeden over the black dot with any form of regularity. Aidan Sezer is still sidelined for the Titans and Greg Bird is reluctant to take on kicking duties meaning that Kevin Gordon has been booting the ball lately but only at an average strike rate of 65 per cent. Chris Sandow has the kicking duties for the Eels and also has a dismal conversion rate this season, kicking at 64 per cent.

The History: Played 10; Titans 7, Eels 3. The Titans have won the past three clashes against the Eels scoring 94 points in the process, although it was a close game the last time these two played at Robina with the Titans having to come from behind to defeat Parramatta 28-22.

Gold Coast has only lost once before when hosting the Eels and that was back in Round 26, 2011. On that occasion both sides were playing to avoid the wooden spoon with that unwanted honour eventually falling to the Titans who were whipped 32-12 by the Eels. The Titans have never won four matches in a row against the Eels so they can create a little piece of history with victory on Saturday.

What Are The Odds: Another even betting game with only slightly more interest in the Eels, who haven’t been in great form of late. According to Sportsbet, Parramatta 1-12 is the popular option in margin betting. Latest odds at Sportsbet.com.au.

Match Officials: Referee – Shayne Hayne; Assistant Referee – Adam Gee; Touch Judges – Jeff Younis and Clayton Sharpe; Video Referees – Steve Clark and Ben Galea.

Televised: Fox Sports – Live 5.30pm.

The Way We See It: This game is almost do-or-die for both sides as a loss would make a late charge towards the finals almost impossible. Impressive last week against the Knights, the Titans must translate this form when playing at home. Greg Bird is back for the Titans which should provide them with a boost, but potentially the biggest boost the Titans could receive is a strong home crowd urging them towards victory. Given that the Eels rarely win on the road, the Titans should win in a close encounter. Titans by six points.

Gold Coast Titans prepare for clash with Parramatta Eels in fine style

THE Gold Coast Titans will prepare for their most important game of the season in “Australia’s newest and most exciting hotel”.

The Titans will bunker down at QT Gold Coast in Surfers Paradise on Friday night as coach John Cartwright looks for a way to replicate his team’s away form at Cbus Super Stadium.

The Titans have lost their past six home games and are desperate to beat Parramatta on Saturday to keep their season alive.

They have the best away record (6-2) in the competition this year but have won just two of nine games at Robina.

In the past four seasons, the Titans have only won a total of 16 games at home. They’ve lost 29 at Cbus in the same period.

Their season is lying on tenterhooks with the team needing to win five of its final seven games to make the play-offs.

The club has a sponsorship arrangement with Jupiter’s but weren’t able to pack their 28-man party into the Broadbeach hotel and casino at short notice.

Instead, they’ll spend the night at the trendy establishment on Staghorn Avenue which is described as “nostalgic surfer chic meets Miami catwalk cool”.

“If food, wine, music, design, fashion and art are your thing, QT Gold Coast is the place for you,” its website reads.

But most of that is what Cartwright wants to get away from.

When the Titans are on the road, they spend their time together playing cards, stretching and talking tactics.

There are few distractions.

Meals are prepared and waiting and they have access to the professional help they may need before a game.

They’ll arrive at the ground together on a bus, possibly only an hour before kick-off, and avoid having their concentration muddled.

“We’re very focused on making sure we’ve got our preparation as good as it can be,” five-eighth Brad Takairangi said.

“It’s never a trouble when we’re away from home.

“It works when we play away so I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work up here.”

Takairangi said the Titans were a close bunch who thrived when they spent time together.

“Just the boys being together. We have feeds together, we’re always together in a bunch,” he said.

“We’re really close and maybe that’s why we perform away from home.

“Everyone’s up to trying something new so hopefully this works.”

The players shouldn’t go hungry at QT.

The hotel’s street stall buffet, Bazaar, is renowned for being one of the best on the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast flyer Kevin Gordon joins queue of stars wanting to play fullback role

AND then there was three.

Titans flyer Kevin Gordon has become the third candidate to put his hand up for the Gold Coast’s No. 1 jersey.

Gordon wants to become a career fullback after getting a taste of the role while William Zillman and David Mead are sidelined with hamstring injuries.

“It’s the next step up from being a winger,” he said.

“I wouldn’t mind playing there full-time.

“I guess there’ll be three people for the spot now.”

Zillman was thought to be the Titans’ long-term custodian after the club signed him to a five-year contract which will keep him on the Gold Coast until at least 2017.

But Mead is hot on his heels, starring for NSW Country this year and showing he has the attacking spark to be a genuine threat from the back.

Mead tore his hamstring against the Rabbitohs recently after scoring an opportunistic try and pulling off a try-saving tackle.

When Zillman went down the following week against former club Canberra the door opened for Gordon to make his third start in the jersey.

The 24-year-old played the final two games of last season – a win over Sydney and golden point loss to Melbourne – at fullback and was solid against Newcastle on Sunday.

“It felt good. It takes a game to get used to it,” Gordon said.

“You need to know where you need to be in the middle. There’s a lot more fitness needed.

“Every play you’ve got to be involved. That’s the main thing.”

Mead has been vocal about his desire to be the Gold Coast’s first-choice fullback while Gordon has quietly bided his time on the wing.

He has work to do on his passing and playmaking and Gordon said he was happy to play wherever was best for the team.

“If we’re winning with the combination there then we might as well leave it,” he said.

“If we’re not playing that good and not winning we might as well change it up.

“Whatever’s best for the team.”

Gordon will get another opportunity at the back on Saturday against Parramatta at Cbus Super Stadium, where he’ll oppose NSW star Jarryd Hayne.

“It should be a good test. He’s one of the best fullbacks in the game,” Gordon said.

“His passing game, the way he can hit the wingers without looking straight on the chest.

“His positional play is great. He’s the full package.”

Titans co-captain Nate Myles said Gordon was relishing the opportunity to showcase his talents from custodian.

“It’s great for us to have the depth to still have such a potent player at fullback,” he said.

“Kev is loving the opportunity and I think he secretly thinks he is a fullback before a winger.”

The Titans held a short, sharp training session yesterday but it wasn’t flawless with halfback Beau Henry suffering a leg injury.

Henry, who has missed the past five weeks with a knee injury, went down after just five minutes and is now unlikely to make his return through the Intrust Super Cup this weekend.

Controversial salary cap rule robs young Gold Coast Titan Tom Kingston of NRL game

TRAVIS MEYN THE COURIER-MAIL (http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/controversial-salary-cap-rule-robs-young-gold-coast-titan-tom-kingston-of-nrl-game/story-fni3grk4-1227001944772) JULY 26, 2014 12:00AM

THE NRL’s controversial salary cap rules have stunted another player on the rise with Titans forward Tom Kingston forced to play reserve grade this weekend.

Kingston made his NRL debut recently after the club sought a second-tier salary cap exemption from the NRL.

The exemption was granted because the Titans argued they did not have any other available player in their top 25, or second tier who had already played NRL this season, that could play in the backrow against Souths in Round 17.

Kingston made the most of his opportunity, playing three solid games, and was a certainty to play in tonight’s home game against Parramatta.

But the availability of Greg Bird and Cody Nelson after two-match suspensions has ended Kingston’s debut season, for now.

Co-captain Bird was always going to return to the team but Kingston would have held his spot ahead of Nelson, who made his debut in Round 8.

Kingston, 26, shelved a career in the air force to chase his NRL dream.

He was in camp with the Titans on Friday night but will play for Tweed Heads in the Intrust Super Cup.

Kingston’s coach at the Seagulls, Aaron Zimmerle, said it was an unfair ruling for a player on the rise.

"I find the NRL ruling on that is really unfair,” he said.

“You’re talking about a guy who’s had to bide his time and overcome so many obstacles to make it to the NRL.

“His performances since he’s been in the NRL have been really good. I’m proud of how well he’s transitioned into that level.”

The early retirement of Ashley Harrison as well as injuries to Caleb Binge and Ben Ridge paved the way for Kingston to crack the top grade following standout seasons for the Seagulls in the Intrust Super Cup.

Titans football manager Scott Clark said Kingston was dealing with his forced demotion well and he wouldn’t be allowed to play again this season unless the team suffers more injuries in the backrow.

“He’s disappointed and frustrated but understanding,” Clark said.

“It’s not an ideal model because a young bloke misses out on playing a game but it is what it is at the moment.”

It was embarrassing seeing them take the idea as far as playing at home in our away strip. Two home games In a Row where we should have won, but played like busted ****s. Zero attacking ability. Even the Taylor centre strategy had minimal impact.

What a shocking game from us. That period from 60-80 minute killed us. Too many errors and too many penalties conceded.

Gordon played shocking at fullback. He is close to being a worse defender than Zillman. Offers nothing in attack.

Don once again played great and deserves to be in the team every week. Absolutely solid.

Our bench offered nothing. We only used 16 players until the 75th minute. Another masterstroke by Carty

Taylor played awesome once again and gained the metres. He should keep his spot at centre.

Overall a **** performance especially in that last 20. It honestly seems that Carty may not be the only problem. For some reason our players look like they don't even want to be playing. However I'm still sticking with #sackCarty.

This was the final nail for sure. In both our season and Carty's tenure. Gordon at fullback (or on the wing) is now no longer our best option. It's good to see Carty has identified one weapon in Dave Taylor, he has to know he as another in James Roberts who should've played fullback with both Zillman and Mead out. Our kicking game was rotten tonight as the Eels kicked us off the park. Mortimer showing his limitations or being coached to kick for the lottery.

The go forward was ordinary tonight apart from Taylor. We looked very cumbersome going right which isn't a good sign for Morts either. Even Taka looked to get us going on the left better, and hepribanly kicked better than Morts too.

No idea where to go from here. That was another game we should never have lost. Parra built plenty of pressure while we built none. End of story.

Yet another game with a complete second half fade out. Not too much to like about any of it. Taylor and Taka good early but faded out to and Gordon and mortimer were very poor. Someone should tell Gordon that if you jink about 5 times in 5 metres, by the time you hit the defence you will be travelling at snails pace and will get smashed. Parra looked far more dangerous in attack all night and it was only our scrambling defence that stopped a complete blow out. Roberts looked completely out of his league in defence and they killed us down his side. I read in the paper that we didn't have much money under the cap to buy players - if we are paying up to the cap on that lot, there are far too many players getting overs.
Useless in attack but why go on as it's all been said before. Over it.

I mean I don't know if anyone can help me but with the kick that the Eels did that went over the touch line late in the 2nd half, did the Titans player touch the ball when it happened, because if he didn't, you would THINK it SHOULD have been a 20m restart instead of a goal line drop out. back to Parramatta. And I'm sorry but Jarred Hayne is a GRUB!!!!!. With that tackle that he claimed that the TItans dropped the ball, HE KNOCKED IT OUT OF HIS HAND!!!!!!!. Or something like that anyway. The one thing we know for sure after tonight's game is Gordon may be as good as the Turd package at wearing the no1 but neither should wear it when Mead us in the side, Gordon was a joke tonight just like his coach...another Master Class handed to the Coachless Titans by Hayne , u can have Slater I'll take Hayne...

Hayne double inspires Eels triumph
By Tony Webeck, Chief Queensland Correspondent
NRL.com
7:39pm Sat 26th July, 2014

A three-try burst in the space of 13 minutes from a Jarryd Hayne-inspired Parramatta has kept the Eels' slim finals hopes alive while at the same time sounding the death knell on a Titans season once again let down by a poor showing at home.

More than 14,000 fans converged on Cbus Super Stadium for the die-or-die encounter but it was those wearing a deeper shade of blue and gold who walked away with belief intact for at least one more week after Hayne turned the game on its head and the Eels triumphed 24-18.

The late inclusions of Will Hopoate, Tim Mannah and Ken Sio gave Parramatta a significant bonus in personnel but it was the sheer brilliance of Hayne and the controlled kicking game of halfback Chris Sandow that always made the Eels look the team more likely.

Hayne's first try was a pure solo effort in the 54th minute when he pushed off on the outside of Titans lock Greg Bird 60 metres from the tryline and then put an in-and-away on fullback Kevin Gordon to score in the south-west corner, Sandow's conversion levelling scores at 12 apiece.

Six minutes later and on the back of a penalty for a shepherd by James Roberts, the Eels went deep into Titans territory and two tackles into the set Hayne speared through on a Sandow pass to put his side in front for the first time.

Hayne was at it again in the 69th minute when he instigated another Eels raid with a scything run from deep in his own half, with a grubber from Sandow behind the uprights being spilled by Mortimer and pounced on by Corey Norman.

Roberts added to his own personal highlights reel with a long-range try in the final minute of the game but it was too little, too late for a side that has now won just two games from 10 at home this season.

Although they were first to score in the fifth minute the Titans could credit their gritty defence for an 8-6 half-time advantage after the Eels dominated much of the territory and possession for the majority of the half.

New South Wales Origin rep Will Hopoate was a late inclusion for the Eels but it didn't take long before he was introduced to the runaway 'Coal Train' when a superb cut-out pass from makeshift five-eighth Brad Takairangi found his makeshift centre in Dave Taylor in wide open space close to the Parramatta line for an early shot across the bow.

Titans makeshift goal-kicker Kevin Gordon added the extras but the Eels soon gained the ascendancy with Sandow and Hayne challenging the Titans defence and earning numerous back-to-back sets.

In the 15th minute the Eels wasted an attacking opportunity with a fifth set in succession in the Titans' half but even though the home side's defence was holding strong, a poor kicking game at the other end kept inviting the Eels to try their hand.

Eventually Sandow found a way through in the 19th minute when he held off on a face-ball that hit an unmarked Ken Sio on the wing and the try was awarded despite the suggestion that Sandow had gone behind lead runner Tepai Moeroa in the lead-up.

In the 30th minute the Eels were at it again and when a cross-field kick from Norman was spilled by Ryan Morgan and then grounded by Kenny Edwards the video referee was called upon, confirming the on-field decision of no try.

Two minutes later Semi Radradra wasted a wonderful chance to put his side in front when he failed to grasp a cut-out pass from Edwards with only 88-kilogram Gordon between him and the tryline with possession eventually turning to give the Titans a shot to add to their tally.

Kalifa Faifai Loa looked certain to score in the 35th minute before he was held up in an extraordinary effort from Hopoate, and then two minutes before half-time Gordon gave the Titans a two-point lead with a penalty goal after a strip on Taylor just 10 metres from the Parramatta tryline.

The Titans extended their half-time advantage when half Daniel Mortimer finally got a kick to land on the spot in the 50th minute when a cross-field chip on the third tackle found an unmarked Anthony Don who grounded the ball just inside the dead-ball line.

Although the Titans' makeshift halves, centre and fullback were doing enough to keep their side in front and their defence had absorbed a mountain of pressure in the first 40 minutes, when Hayne put his foot down he proved once again that there are few who can go with him.

Parramatta Eels 24 (Jarryd Hayne 2, Ken Sio, Corey Norman tries; Chris Sandow 4 goals) def. Gold Coast Titans 18 (Dave Taylor, Anthony Don, James Roberts tries; Kevin Gordon 2, Anthony Don goals). Crowd: 14,175. Half-time: 8-6 Titans.

Cartwright: 'He's just that good'
By Tony Webeck, Chief Queensland Correspondent
NRL.com
10:10pm Sat 26th July, 2014

He may have single-handedly put paid to the Titans' prospects of playing semi-final football in 2014 but Gold Coast coach John Cartwright has lauded the two-try display of Eels superstar Jarryd Hayne in Parramatta's 24-18 win on Saturday evening.

The Titans' record at home fell to a dismal 2-8 this season despite Cartwright taking the team into camp on Friday night, their best-laid plans brought undone by a Hayne performance that yielded two tries, three line breaks and 229 running metres.

"It wasn't a lack of effort that cost us the game; it was the brilliance of Jarryd Hayne that cost us the game," Cartwright lamented.

"They did a good job on him up until that point and then two or three bits of brilliance and he took the game away from us.

"He's just that good. There are few players in the game that can do that and he's one of them. We were aware of it and that's what makes them even better.

"They did a great job on him bar three or four occasions and he was good enough to take advantage of it and took the win away from us.

"There was a lot of effort there, the difference in the game was Jarryd Hayne.

While reaffirming their commitment to continue to fight for a finals spot until it becomes a mathematical impossibility, Cartwright conceded their poor kicking game at present is putting greater pressure on their defence.

Although a Daniel Mortimer kick led directly to a try for Anthony Don that gave the Titans a 12-6 advantage 10 minutes into the second half, he and makeshift five-eighth Brad Takairangi were unable to earn their side a repeat set for the entire 80 minutes having only produced one the week before against the Knights.

First-choice No.6 Aidan Sezer is awaiting medical clearance before he is able to return from a pectoral injury but the desperate nature of the situation ahead of next Saturday's clash with the Cowboys may force Cartwright to at least ask the question.

"It's a medical decision. When he's medically right... We're missing his kicking game, big time, Cartwright admitted. "We're getting up into good positions to kick the ball and we're not making them work hard enough on the back of our kicking game.

"The first half, we got not a lot of help with penalties and when a side's playing well – and they were completing pretty high – you've got to rely on your short kicking game or to get some penalties to get some decent ball so we didn't get a lot of decent ball and the decent ball we did get we come up with points.

"When a bit of fatigue set in, that's when you notice it. Guys that aren't used to playing in those positions, when the fatigue sets in the football goes a little bit out the window and they start to play a little bit one-out. It was our doing, we turned over too many balls in a short period of time and they made us pay.

"Obviously we're going to have to turn things around in terms of tight games and winning games but no one's giving up, I can guarantee you that."

As for that BS that he dribbled in the press conference, he said exactly the same thing about Milford.

This loss was not about our inability to stop Hayne. Once again, as it has been all year, it was our inability to SCORE ENOUGH POINTS. The Eels were always going to score 20 points plus on a perfect night for footy, and as soon as they did that was the end of the game.

We did not lose because of a couple of runaway tries - we lost because we squandered too many opportunities at the business end of the field. We scored 12 points last night WHILE THE GAME WAS ONE THE LINE. The other six points were just a junk time try conceded by a team that had done enough to win the game.

We need to stop focus on trying to stop points and start trying to score them ourselves.

How can any other conclusion be drawn except that we are literally out of all possible other ideas?
