Storm Rivalry Grows Into Blockbuster Clash

Top six home games, as voted by fans on www.broncos.com.au:
- Broncos v North Queensland Cowboys (Friday, 14 March) - 34 per cent
- Broncos v Melbourne Storm (Friday, 25 July) - 25 per cent
- Broncos v Canterbury Bulldogs (8-11 August, TBA) - 15 per cent
- Broncos v South Sydney Rabbitohs (Friday, 25 April) - 12 per cent
- Broncos v NZ Warriors (Saturday, 19 July) - 9 per cent
- Broncos v Gold Coast Titans (Friday, 16 May) - 6 per cent)

THE stunning battles the Broncos have waged with the Melbourne Storm over the past five years have catapulted the match into one of the most anticipated clashes of the season by fans.

The season-opening Queensland Derby between the Broncos and the Cowboys was always going to be judged the favourite in a poll run by the club over the past two months.

But the surprise was the strong vote recorded by the match against the Storm, with 25 per cent of all recipients judging it their favourite match of the year.

The two clubs have built a huge rivalry since the Broncos edged Melbourne 15-8 in the 2006 grand final.

In addition, the Storm coach, Craig Bellamy, is a former Broncos' assistant. The Broncos' coach, Anthony Griffin, is a former Storm assistant.

And that rivalry has produced some stunning games at the home of the Broncos in the past five seasons.

In 2009 the Broncos won 16-14, and while the two did not meet at the venue in 2010, in 2011 it was another cracker with the Storm winning 29-22.

In 2012 the Storm again squeaked home, 19-18, while last year the visitors did it again with a late try securing them a 32-26 win.

No doubt another tight contest looms when the Storm comes to Suncorp Stadium in round 20 of this year on Friday July 25.

The Cowboys game, which was the most favoured with 34 per cent of the vote, will again be a rip-roaring opening to the home season in round 2 on Friday, March 14.
The off-season arrival of Ben Barba to the Broncos has plenty of fans salivating for his first match at home against his old club.

Barba will face the Bulldogs at Suncorp Stadium in round 22 on the weekend of August 8-11 (match day and time still to be set), with 15 per cent nominating it as their most-preferred match.

The Rabbitohs' resurgence in the competition has helped make it the fourth-most anticipated game with 12 per cent of the vote, with the huge Kiwi population in south-east Queensland helping the July 19 game against the Warriors be voted as favourite by nine per cent of people.

Another six per cent of fans can't wait for the local derby against the Gold Coast Titans, to be held at Suncorp Stadium on Friday May 16.

You can attend any four games of your choice in 2014 with an Awesome Foursome membership - available from just $120 an adult and $50 for juniors. See the details here.

I think the peak interest in the derby in Brisbane was in the early 1990s during the Seagulls franchise. IMO Brisbane interest has waned recently because we haven't beaten the broncos in a long time.
memorable night was us beating a star studded Broncos line up at Carrara (same night Glenn Lazarus ran down Coleman!)

What would Gold Coast Titans fans rate as their Top 6 home games? Mine would be:

1. Broncos - goes without saying...always great to beat Brisbane
2. Cowboys - another QLD team and a crowd favourite
3. Dragons - just the heritage factor here for me as they were the team we played for the very first NRL match in 2007
4. Warriors - because we have many Kiwis here on the GC and they always draw a large crowd
5. Rabbitohs - lots of stars and draws a large crowd
6. Manly - large and loud following and well doesn't everyone dislike Manly

I want to beat every bloody bastard that steps into our territory including Mr Whippy ... I hate in no particular order: Eels ... Easts ... Balmain/Wests ... St. George/Illawarra ... Manly/Norths ... Newcastle ... Penrith ... Cowboys ... Melbourne ... Brisbane ... Cronulla ... Canterbury ... Canberra ... Auckland/NZ and Souths ... I laugh at them and p1ss on them all because they are all the friggin' enemy.

Good choices, I wouldnt change any, except maybe add the Bulldogs in at 7th, who we have had some exciting games with in the past.

what a crock 2-3 … The most hated club in the NRL.
Nope at least 4 but that prestigious position is well occupied by the fat and bloated, latte-loving Bondi Boys who have the mortgage on gerbil-buggering.

Nope.. Not feeling any love here for Manly.

Well, not since Cliffy Lyon's retired. But that was more about the Man, than the Club..

If we ever wanna make it big, massive crowds, tv and memberships, we must defeat the Broncos and make the Derby an event instead of sitting on our hands for 7 years.

In AFL when Collingwood and Carlton are last and 2nd last they still get 80,000 people.

We have dropped the ball here and we have done nothing to develop a Brisbane fan base.

But yes, we need to turn around our diabolic form against the Broncos. And win win win. We had some early classic encounters and we need to hope we get back to that.

Yes sure but those rivalries in gAyFL were grown from GF confrontations ... we can't even get a punch-up going.
