View Full Version : Titans bring American cheer

Having than just a pretty face will be a pre-requisite for the Gold Coast Titans cheerleading squad.

The NRL's new franchise has adopted an American-style cheerleading routine featuring gymnasts, acrobats and even cheerboys to help entertain its fans from 2007 when it enters the competition.

Choreographer Anthony Ikin, the younger brother of former Brisbane Broncos five-eighth Ben Ikin, is assembling a cheerleading squad of 20 girls and boys aged between 16 and 27.

Titans marketing manager Stephen Burns promised the cheerleading routine would focus on skills rather than just pretty girls strutting around waving their pom-poms.

"If you can have good looking girls who are skilled, people appreciate that," Burns said.

"This is not a beauty show. It's all about the skills that these girls - and guys by the way - will exhibit on the night of the games."

Gold Coast-based Ikin approached the Titans about becoming choreographer for their squad after a state cheerleading championships in Los Angeles in August impressed him.

Ikin acknowledged it was difficult to find the right balance between developing sexual appeal for the male-dominated fans of rugby league while still keeping the show family-orientated.

"The latest styles like Britney Spears and Christine Aguilera are influencing the dance industry quite heavily so it's hard not to be too provocative," Ikin said.

"The style we're doing at the Titans is different because we're going to utilise gymnasts and boys.

"It's a more high energetic, athletic approach.

"I'm going to make sure everyone in the stadium walks away more jaw-dropped than anything." Eight cheerleaders will showcase the routine at the Titans' charity ball at Jupiters Casino on Saturday night before a squad of 13 performs at an NRL trial match between the Bulldogs and New Zealand Warriors at Carrara Stadium on February 25.

I can't say I am a fan of cheerguys.

It was a massive failure when the Broncos had their Honeys and Hunks. They soon back peddled and ditched them.

Should be interesting anyway. Certainly different from anything else any other NRL clubs have.

But I still like hot girls strutting around with poms poms, call me old fashioned.

Dunno about guys being in the cheersquad. I spose if they're going to be involved they'd have to be pretty fit. Male gymnasts would be the ones they'd be looking at.

LOL told my mate who is going to be a Titans fan about their cheerboys... he is already looking for a new team if it is true. I think they need to be like all the other clubs but representing the Gold Coast not trying to be so different. There is already enough guys out on the field Cheerleaders even things up. It's just not footy!

Sneak preview of Titan?s Cheerleaders

A large contingent of Gold Coast Media were given a glimpse of 2 of the Gold Coast Titans Cheer Squad members ahead of their debut performance at Saturday night?s Inaugural Charity Ball.

The Titans Cheer squad will perform two routines at the Ball as part of a sensational entertainment line up for the evening. Under the guidance of five times Australian Sports Aerobics Champion Anthony Ikin the group has been working on their routines which place a big emphasis on athleticism and acrobatics. The presentation fans can expect to see in 2007 will not be dissimilar to the American Cheer leaders.

Anthony Ikin said, ?Our brief from the Gold Coast Titans is to make our routines and actions on the field entertainment in itself. We want the whole family to enjoy what we do There will be a mix of men and women ion our squad which gives us the ability to perform spectacular moves with high energy and acrobatics.

Up to twenty dancers will take to the sideline for each game to compliment the on field performance of the Titans Rugby League team. This Saturday night there will be a squad of 8 performing for the expected 700 ball attendees.

?People will see a routine more gymnastic than on the field, it will be a tightly synchronised dance routine. Spectacular for the tight space available on stage? said Ikin.

Tickets to Inaugural Charity Ball are still available through Tony McDonald at the Gold Coast Titans Headquarters on 0755810150.

Sounds like it is going well.. but surprised we didn't hear any info on this site about tryouts or favourites to get the job.. or did I just miss that...

About Cheerguys.. it will work if done correctly.. St George Illawarra had one and he was a crowd favourite... so if done correctly I reckon we can once again set the standard to the NRL of how to have a Cheersquad that ROCKS... :guit: :guit:

I actually don't mind the whole idea. Certainly Brings the Atmosphere and entertainment value up a hell of a notch. Especially if we get to see Good looking girls get thrown of a 4 story Human pyramid at half time.

I think it could work.

i've never really been too supportive of the whole 'cheerleader' thing.

i'm not really for americanisation of league, but from the sounds of it there will be more of an entertainment factor, plus bringing in guys. i think it could be great if the titans do it right. seems less sexist also. and really, putting a bit more effort into crowd entertainment can't be a bad thing.

I don't understand why there weren't any auditions notices put up on the site, i for one am very keen to be a titans cheergirl and am highly disappointed that nothing was said about this. :upset:

Can one of the mods put some details on here of any details regarding the cheer squad, eg: contact details etc. Looks like we might have a candidate on the forums.

Your disappointment will be noted Caroline and I will send through to the Titans.

If I did have any info, it would of been posted. To be honest, I would of thought auditions may have been on the website.

Im for it - More of a 'gymnastics' display rather than a provocative dance. Watch the American schools cheerleaders (yes male and female) and it contains and amazing amount of skill and gymnastics. Its not about strutting around in barely there clothes (ie Reds the other night) but more the choreography, throws, tumbles and dancing. A family friendly entertainment - a something different to other cheer leading squads - this is more dancing and gymnastics!

I may not be the best dancer or good a gymnastics - but i'm certainly willing to DO WHATEVER it takes to make the TITANS look good (within reason). i'm so signing up to Anthony Ikins dance classes next month and working my ass off to improve my dance and flexibility. I'm already going to the gym to tone up and whatever - I'M FULLY KEEN.... BRING IT ON!!!!!

Well you still have a chance.. according to that other article Caroline they have only picked a squad of like 10 for the Charity Ball and the trial game at Carrara, like a prototype of what to expect.. there is still like 30 to pick and so you are in with a shot.. :)

It is great to see such enthusiasm and determination to cheer, I wish you all the best with this endeavour and I am right behind you as I reckon anyone who is that passionate about the Titans deserves to Cheer their team, as I know they will do a great job.. :D :D

NO,NO,NO.

Why do we have to Americanize everything. It's Rugby League not yawnathon gridiron!!!It is about chicks strutting around in skimpy gear,AND yes the Reds cheerleaders would be a perfect role model. There was always family freindly stuff at NRL games now (mascots, kids interactive games at half time). Cheerleaders are the last bastion of all red-blooded males.....leave them alone.

I dunno about anyone else but I've never left a rugby league match wishing they had of added more entertainment... You're there to watch footy, who gives a stuff abuot gymnastic capabilities!?! Its not like half time is a marathon event, by the time you've grabbed your second half supply of beer, the players are almost running back out.

As far as having blokes out there, someone here put it brilliantly when they stated there was already enough blokes on the field, the cheergirls even things out. I know if I had a kid and took him to the footy I'd want him to be aspiring to be like the half back who's controlling the game or the prop thats making all the meters, not the twinkle toed bloke doing cartwheels at half time.

I tend to agree, I just want cheerleaders like Manlys... :') (I'm crying because they are so hot.)

But if we can have all that and some amazing stuff, might be cool.
