Melbourne Storm are counting on Craig Bellamy choosing love over money following St George Illawarra's massive bid to secure their successful NRL coach.

Off contract at the end of the 2014 season, the Dragons are believed to have tabled Bellamy an offer worth $6 million over five years.

The mastermind of the 2012 premiership, Bellamy has said he's "50-50" about the possibility of leaving the club where he started his senior coaching career back in 2003 and he plans to make a decision on what's likely to be his final coaching contract this month.

"We know he's looking elsewhere and he's entitled to do that," Storm chief executive Ron Gauci said on Wednesday.

"We're obviously keen to keep him and we're negotiating to do that."

Gauci said that with two clubs vying for him the chances of keeping him were also 50-50, but he hoped that Bellamy's strong emotional ties would prove too strong.

Bellamy steered the club back to the 2012 title after the ignominy of losing their 2007 and 2009 titles for salary cap cheating, and he has a close bond with his players especially Storm superstars Cameron Smith and Billy Slater.

Ryan Hoffman and Brett Finch both returned from England to play again under their mentor.

"We'd like to think that the emotional ties that he has to the club and its players will weigh in his thoughts," Gauci says.

"If this is to be his last contract that he'll consider where he'd like to finish his coaching days.

"We'd like to think that weighs favourably our way as well."

Gauci said the Storm weren't surprised by the reported size of the Dragons' offer given Bellamy's well-proven ability and standing in the game.

They planned to do all they could to accommodate him in terms of money and contract length, with the 54-year-old feeling this deal could be his last.

"We're very keen to work with Craig's requirements to keep him," Gauci said.

"He has the role for as long as he wants as long as I'm in the chair."

The Storm resume training in Melbourne on Thursday following a 10-day break, with representative players skipper Smith and Cooper Cronk to make their first official appearances at training.

Slater has been granted leave to attend his sister's wedding.

Meanwhile, the club confirmed it will have a team compete in Harold Matthews (under 16) competition side for the first time in 2013.

Absolutely. As League fans we need to get behind junior development in all places, particularly places like Melbourne where its not traditionally strong.

Why don't we make a play for Bellamy. If we offered him huge $$$ he would rather come here then follow in the footsteps of Bennet (Dragons). The challenge of the club's inaugural premiership would appeal to him.
Could you imagine what he could do with a squad like this, with Taylor and Idris, With Sezer and Kelly, with Zillman, Barba, Srama and etc.... He would turn Michaels and O'dwyer in solid 1st graders.

Bellamy would bring most his staff including wrestling coaches, scouters etc...
We would have one of the games best coaches, one of the best development systems in the world and have talent scouts who have knowledge of the next lot of superstars.
I'm sure Carty wouldn't mind being a assistant to Bellamy. When Bellemy retires, Carty can take over with the structures in place and developed stars at his disposal.

Bellamy locks into Storm

Melbourne Storm is delighted to announce head coach Craig Bellamy has re-signed until the end of the 2016 season.

The announcement is a significant boost to the club on the day the team departs for the World Club Challenge in England and prior to the commencement of the 2013 Telstra NRL Season.

This announcement brings to a close a process that has seen the highly respected coach, contemplate considerable options, due to his standing and high demand. Bellamy?s decision to stay ensures his strong relationship with Melbourne and Melbourne Storm will continue well beyond this season.
?During the off-season, I?ve had plenty of time to consider a number of attractive options,? said Craig Bellamy.

?I?ve said on a few occasions that this might easily be my last coaching contract. That?s why I wanted to make sure that whatever decision I made was the right one.

?I have been at the Storm now for over a decade and now that I?m on board until 2016 I look forward to the challenges ahead.

?I?m excited with the current playing roster and our future prospects. I?m really looking forward to flying to the United Kingdom today for the World Club Challenge. It will be good to fully concentrate on coaching again without any distractions.?

Bellamy, about to start his eleventh season at Storm, recently steered the club to the 2012 Premiership, the club?s fifth grand final appearance in the last seven years.

Widely regarded as one of the best coaches in Australian sport and motivator of men, the Storm mentor has overseen the re-build of his squad a number of times. During his tenure Bellamy has recruited several fringe players from other clubs and turning them into regular first grade players.
Under his tutelage he has also produced players who have made their representative debuts including Cameron Smith, Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk, Ryan Hoffman, Jesse Bromwich, Kevin Proctor, Matt Duffie and Gareth Widdop.

Storm CEO Ron Gauci said Bellamy was without doubt the right person to oversee the continued on-field success of the club.

?Craig has proven himself to be one of the elite coaches in Australian sport and we believe this new contract reflects his true value and his status in the sporting landscape,? Gauci said.

?We have always been respectful of Craig?s wishes to take the time to review his options.

?This re-signing is also an endorsement of Craig?s confidence in the club?s strategy, our direction and the team?s prospects for the future.
?Craig?s signature is not only good for Melbourne Storm, but also for rugby league in Victoria, he is a tremendous ambassador for our club and the code.?
