NEW NATION CZECHS OUT LEAGUE
The Czech Republic could be the latest European nation to take up rugby league.

European development officer Kevin Rudd has reported growing interest in the sport after attending a meeting in Prague with officials of the newly-formed Czech Rugby League, who hope to join fledgling nations Georgia, Holland and Serbia onto the international stage.

Driving forces behind the move are Milan Mrtynek, a noted rugby player and administrator, and Jan Sluka, who has recently returned home from a spell playing with the Kilkenny Wildcats in the Irish League.

"Both of them have been delighted with the initial response from players and fans within a country desperately keen to give the sport a go," said Rudd.

"The new organisation has expatriate English and Scots support off the field alongside the native Czechs."

The Czechs hope to get the green light to take part in the qualifying tournament for the 2008 World Cup in Australia when the European Federation board meets in London on February 12.

Great to see the interest growing - there needs to be regular WC's.
