The Group One JRL competition has kicked off with a few Titans linked boys doing well early, Julian Torrens has scored a hat trick in both matches to date with backrower Tyhyres Williams crossing for five tries so far including 4 against Marist Brothers in the U14 competition, in the 15's Ben Liyou and Caleb Barker are dominating for Grafton. In the U13's wing Michael Stephen-Bolt with seven tries in two matches with ultra quick fullback Rowen Mansfiled crossing for four in the early going. Too early to discuss because he is so young but U12 front rower Ashton Randall to keep an eye on in the future already Rugby clubs all over him

A great development in relation to junior rugby league on the Gold Coast is the introduction of a Tweed Heads Seagulls side in the U17 Division One competition which will be coached by Kevin Neighbour who is also coaching the Titans U20 rookie squad in 2018. Lonegull they are essentially like the Titans High Performance Squad. They will likely play some trial matches but over the season the players will in the main play for either Burleigh, Tweed or the Western Mustangs.

In terms of the players a number of the boys that are still eligible for U20's from the 2017 NYC season are there and plenty of the MM boys such as Jaxson Paulo, Darius Farer etc.

As the off season goes on I will try to update.

In relation to the Titans linked boys in the U16 Vikings squad that is a tough one to answer.* The Titans are currently talking to players about opportunities in their high performance unit so it depends on who accepts, if some don’t who then will get an opportunity etc.

Titans fume over Roosters poach

The Titans are fuming at losing one of their best young front row prospects to the big spending Roosters.
Hailing from Benji Marshall’s old school, Keebra Park, Geordie Brand knocked back offers from three rival clubs to join the tri-colours.
At just 17, he will start next season in the Roosters lower grades but is one for the little black books.
Brand has played Australian under 15s, Australian Schoolboys and Queensland under 16 State of Origin in recent seasons and will add fire power to the Roosters pack for years to come.

Some very very interesting names in the Western Mustangs U20 squad for the 2018 season.

As expected theTtitans High Performance Academy boys are in the 35 man squad such as Chris Chambers, Alex Dunneman, Blake Cullen, Luke Maiden, Jordan Crocker and James Robinson.* Also the exceptionally talented Errol Simpson is also in the squad.

There are also some exceptionally talented young New Zealand boys coming over for the 2018 season including star Napier Boys High School No. 8 Lolani Falevia and front rower Fasitau Simati.* Fellow New Zealander Hedi Moani-Kafoa is another recruit with a wonderful story in that he was born without a right hand but the former 2015 NZ High School Champion with Otahuha College, starred this season for the Hervey Ball Seagulls and is a 117kg front rower.

Another player to note is Manly 2017 SG Ball and Ron Massey Cup hooker Cody McNiece who captained the St Gregory’s College Campbelltown school boy side this year.* St Johns College Woodlawn powerhouse front rower Aiden Kennedy is also in the squad.

They are shaping as a very good side in 2018 especially their forward pack, which looks very big and powerful.

Positive news that the Titans have secured talented young Grafton Ghosts second rower Ben Liyou to a two year deal, he will finish his schooling in Grafton before moving up to the Coast in 2019. Next season Ben Liyou will likely spend a fair bit of time playing for the Grafton Ghosts U18 Group Two side.

Recently Ben Liyou was awarded the Gold Coast Titans Sportsperson of the year award at a function at the Southport Yacht Club.

A very heavy skills based focus in GC schools mate, obviously more money but integrating junior development with the NRL side is very much on the cards. Titans are also going to add more resources to the Toowoomba region as well. To be fair though the Toowoomba region is already a focus as can be seen by multiple Titans scholarship boys such as Cody McNeice being placed there to supplement the Titans development boys already there.

mdrew do you have any information on last years NYC players such as Brownbill, Lillis, Lenehan, Fai etc. wondering if the Titans have retained any of them and where they will be playing in the 2018 season. Maybe it will be the tale of the ones who got away because the talent scouts did not do their job. Under a new coach and with the direction of Brennan i am sure some of those mentioned above could become part of the local talent just waiting for an opportunity to show their full potential. Sometimes fringe players when viewed through the eyes of a new coach can excel and become much better players, just look at what Bellamy has done with some of his squad.

Zae Wallace is in Burleigh's QCup squad, Jake Sparey is heading to Redcliffe and Justin Fai will be at South's Logan. Not sure about Blake Lenehan, but talking to a family member a few months ago either Easts or Burleigh will be lucky enough to have his services for 2018.

Obviously AJ has a Titans contract and Api and Moeaki are training with the Titans NRL squad as well

I tend to agree. He ran some beautiful lines especially off Ethan Roberts. He was the only 1 in that team that could runsuch lines. Ethan Roberts was the only 1 who could put guys into holes. That is my biggest concern with Brimson, his ability to put blokes into holes. He has a great individual game and kicking game. Ethan created great shape for the team especially during the first half of the season. For me Brownbill is a 2nd rower not a centre. Once he bulks up he will be a weapon on the edge.

Gold Coast Titans open to exploring long-awaited link with Keebra Park State High School
Connor O’Brien, @obrien_GCB, Gold Coast Bulletin

“NOTHING is off the table.”

Those five words alone, spoken by Titans chief executive Graham Annesley, should fill frustrated Gold Coast NRL fans with hope.

That rugby league nursery Keebra Park State High School has fed the Coast’s best and brightest emerging juniors to rival NRL clubs has been a long-held gripe of Titans fans.

Keebra are the reigning national schoolboys champions. Among their star products are Benji Marshall, Jordan Kahu and Corey Norman.
The Southport-based school is currently affiliated with the Canterbury Bulldogs, having previously been tied to Wests Tigers.

But maybe, just maybe, that could change in the coming years if Annesley gets his way.

Under former coach Neil Henry and his successor Garth Brennan, the Titans have placed increased priority on Gold Coast talent.

“Nothing is off the table and if it is in our own backyard, we are as entitled as much as any other club – in fact we’re entitled more probably than any other club – to try to nurture that,” Annesley said when asked if an association with Keebra was on the radar.
“The one thing that Garth is very determined to do is to build relationships right through our own region.

“Whether that be with our feeder clubs which we have just signed on for another term, whether it be junior clubs, whether it is schools, Garth is determined to find the best local talent and try to nurture it and retain it.”
The club already boasts a number of Palm Beach Currumbin State High School graduates in its ranks including incumbent skipper Ryan James, while recruit Jai Arrow attended Keebra.

Arrow is one of six recruits for 2018 who hail from southeast Queensland or Northern Rivers.

It’s a ploy that has been well received by fans with a feeling there will be increased pride instilled in the Gold Coast jersey.

“It’s good for the community, it’s good for the club, it’s good for the club culture,” Annesley said.

“I don’t think you will ever have a team that runs out where your whole starting 17 is local juniors but it would be a good thing if we got to that.”

The situation at Keebra is an interesting one. One of the reasons (not the only one) that the Tigers did not renew was that the Wests Tigers were not able to contract the best Keebra boys, the Bulldogs are having the same issue. Taking into account their best players from this season, three are going to the Broncos (Fifita, Boyd and Seiuli) and one to the Roosters (Brand). Yes four are going to the Bulldogs including Seb Winters-Chang but the Broncos have had a history of cherry picking the best I.e. Jordan Kahu etc. PS the Titans have a number of Keebra boys on scholarships in the Open and lower grades.

I am not adverse at all to an agreement with Keebra but as Hail Sezer has said there will have to be a fair bit of give and take.

Until then and even after the Titans should continue to focus on Coombabah (where there are plenty of Titans boys) and PBC who have got a great U14 and U15 crop.

TSS is an interesting beast as the Titans have had a few boys there but TSS are very very good at keeping boys in rugby. The Broncos are increasing the use of GPS schools such as former Titans development squad member Tyryhs Williams heading to Ipswich Grammar School and the Cowboys have a few boys at Brisbane Grammar School including former Titans junior Dea Jarn Asi.

The Titans have an incredible record of identifying junior talent they really do but in the past we have not had the money to match the Roosters and Broncos, the Roosters in the last six months have snared four of the best GC juniors from us and the Broncos have a very heavy Northern NSW focus. Parramatta have also signed one or two such as Brent Barnes

Hopefully with the new owners and Brennan things will change, certainly seeing Jai Arrow, Jai Whitbread and Keegan Hipgrave in Titans colours gives cause for optimism for the future.

From my perspective the future with a couple of tweeks looks bright for the Titans junior development set up

The North Coast Dolphins will run out for the first time this year in Round Two of the Andrew Johns and Laurie Daley Cup competition after having a Round One bye. Extremely talented Titans contracted youngster Ben Liyou will be lining up for the North Coast Dolphins U18 side. It is great to see the Titans getting a few players from the North Coast region of New South Wales signed especially when you consider that in last year’s New South Wales Country Origin side eight had links to the Northern Rivers region. Centre/ second rower Ethan Foster, second rower Ben Liyou and outstanding young fullback/centre Rowan Mansfield who recently signed with the Titans and started in the centres for the Titans U15 when they defeated the Western Mustangs at Nerang recently are just a few of the talented youngsters from the region who are part of the Titans junior development program.

Credit where credit is due, well done Titans.

From a trivia perspective the Titans have signed the leading try scorers in the 2017 Group One Junior Rugby League U14, U15 and U16.5 competitions.

Fullback/centre Rowan Mansfield was the leading try scorer in the U14’s, centre/second row Ethan Foster in the U15’s and second row Ben Liyou in the U16.5 competition. All three are talented young players with big futures.

Congratulations to all players who have made the South Coast and Darling Downs U15 and U18 QSSRL sides, great job all. Plenty of Titans linked boys in the squads but regardless great effort to all. Thanks to the people on this forum who have given me a heads up to the squads I really appreciate it.

Well done to all the parents also for all of the running around they do for their kids and happily do so.

The Gold Coast has actually become a destination for players from the Canberra region looking for an opportunity, the most well-known being Titans NRL player Morgan Boyle but the likes of former Titans NYC players Trae Williams and Kody Parsons started off their careers in the Nation’s capital before heading up to the Gold Coast.

The 2018 season sees backrower Jesse Smith-Shields joined by second rower Gideon Afemui and fullback/wing Aublix Tawha on the Gold Coast playing for the Tweed Heads Seagulls U20 Colts side.

For the Tweed Heads Colts Round One match this weekend, Jesse Smith-Shields has been named at lock and Gideon Afemui and Aublix Tawha on the bench when they take on Norths at Bishop Park Nundah.
