One Titans youngster I have been watching a bit of lately is Kaden Sommerville.
He was a member of the Burleigh 2020 Mal Meninga squad and is now playing U18’s with Burleigh and with PBC in the Langer Cup.
Coming through the younger grades he was primarily a hooker but has had a bit of a growth spurt and filled out over the last 18 months and has been spending a bit of time at lock.
He runs hard, and his defensive efforts have been outstanding! He tackles like a demon and each hit has venom!
I know Jamie went hard to sign him a couple of years ago and I feel like it will pay dividends in a couple of years time.

Titans contracted Thomas Weaver started at half back in the Round Four school boy rugby league Langer Cup local derby against Keebra Park last night scoring one try, creating two others and kicking three from four conversions (his only miss was from the touchline). Thomas Weaver’s try came late in the first half and at a critical point in the match. With PBC down 14 – 0 and PBC on the attack, Thomas Weaver took the ball on the right of the play the ball and took the line on himself from ten metres out. Thomas Weaver dummied twice to his left before breaking two tackles spinning counter clock wise to get to the line under heavy pressure and twisted further to get the ball down with two Keebra Park defenders hanging off him.

Both of Thomas Weaver’s try assist came in the second half and both were down the left side of the field. In relation to his first try assist, Thoams Weaver received the ball off the dummy half ten metres out from the Keebra Park line just to the left of the uprights and accelerated towards the defensive line before pulling up quickly and stepping subtly to put Danie lButterini into a gap with a superbly weighted and timed pass.

Thomas Weaver’s second try assist just minutes later was no less impressive, once again with PBC on the attack also around ten metres out from the line, Thomas Weaver once again received the ball off the dummy half and immediately threw a great fifteen metres cut out pass to his left to winger Troy Duckett to score in the left corner. The key to the pass was not just its length it was also the speed it was thrown as the pass got to Troy Duckett so quickly that the Keebra Park right winger had absolutely no time to readjust and get to Troy Duckett before he scored.

Titans contracted William Semu, playing left second row added a further Hancock Cup try in Round Five against Coombabah State High School yesterday afternoon when once again he packed into a scrum with a Marsden feed at lock ten metres out from the line and ten metres in from touch. William Semu picked up the ball from the base of the scrum running to his left down the blind side and crashed over between two Coombabah defenders. The try was identical to a try that William Semu scored in Round Four against Wavell State High School.

William Semu could have had a double in the match, but after an oustnading run when he took the ball fifty metres out and stepping off his right foot to beat the initial defensive line. A strong right arm fend saw William Semu beat the fullback but the ball was stripped out over the try line.

In the second half Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa executed one of the most outstanding tackles that I have ever seen. Titans linked Coby Black had an outstanding match in Round Five of the school boy Hancock Cup competition for Coombabah State High School on Tuesday afternoon against Marsden State High School, kicking two conversions from four attempts, with his two misses being from the right touchline. Coby Black also had a try assist in the match, was heavily involved in another and also produced an outstanding individual play that saved a try.

Coby Black’s ty assist came in the first half when he was operating on the right side of the field. Immediately upon receiving the ball Coby Black took the line one, popping his body partly through the tackle getting his left arm free and off-loading to his right second rower who charged to line to score. Coby Black was also heavily involved in Coombabah’s final try when he threw a long cut out pass to his left to his fullback in space who was able to get the ball to his left winger who dived over in the left corner.

Coby Black’s outstanding piece of play came in the second half. Titans contracted Jahream Bula’s Round Five Langer Cup match yesterday afternoon when he started at left centre away to St Mary’s Toowoomba scoring a second half double and also recording a first half try assist.

Jahream Bula’s first try was a result of pure strength and desire to score. Off the back of a scrum ten metres out from the St Mary’s line, Jahream Bula received the abll surrounded by three defenders who all engagaed him at the same time. Jahream Bula continued to fight the tackle and pump his legs and dragged the defenders five metres before crashing over around ten metres from the left corner post.

Jahream Bula’s second try result from him chasing through a Keebra Park attacking kick. Connor Te Kani ran parallel to the defensive line to the left of the field and put in a right foot grubber kick which sat up perfectly for Jahream Bula to take the ball above his head around a metre from the try line and surge over to score near the left up right.

Jahream Bula’s try assist came when he broke into space down the left side of the field from around fifity metres out, Jahream Bula came back inside slightly to give his winger more room and drew the St Mary’s fullback before passing to his winger who had a straight and easy fifteen run to the try line to score in the left corner.

Connor Te Kani was operating on the right and received the ball two passes off the ruck and ran the ball paralell to the defensive line and threw a short no look pass to a straight running Seth Niketemo who went straight through a gap to score from ten metres out.

Seth Nikotemo’s second try came late in the match once again down the right side of the field. On the last tackle, Blake Scott took the ball down a short blind side, off loading to Seth Nikotemo who was standing still at the time, he was able to step off his right foot but was held by one leg but Seth Nikotemo was able to reach out and put the ball down with his right arm to score a much deserved double.

To be fair the miss only barely missed.

Thomas Weaver also recorded two try assists which where for all intents and purposes identical, with one coming in each half. On both occasions, Thomas Weaver received the ball on the left side of the field, running at the ball to engage the defenders before throwing a long cut out pass to his left to Diane Mariner both both occasions to score in the left corner. I personally don't mate, yes the first couple of rounds across all levels were up and down but now I would say it is as good if not better than other years. One of the reasons is that with fewer games there is less fatigue as the season goes on.

One competition being the NRRRL U18 competition is probably the best standard that I have ever seen.

One negative however is that just like the NRL, injuries have been more prevalent especially in the older levels such as U18's and Open school boy competitions. That situation is a touch harder to make a judgement. Is it that the lack of a proper pre-season is impacting or that the soft tissue injuries that would normally have occurred in the pre-season have this season happened in the season proper and thus more noticable.

One definate point is that the schoolboy and club games are packed closer in together, as they had to be. The Titans however are aware of this and no doubt look to ensure the players do not burnout.

My final point is that due to the pandemic and lot of U18 or U20 players are getting opportunities in the senior age groups thus accelerating their development.

For the 2020 Group One U16.5 competition Damon Coldwell moved to the Ballina Seagulls and started at five eight in Round One as the Seagulls defeated Casino RSM. Damon Coldwell moved to left centre for Round Three and made the most of the move, scoring a double as Ballina defeated Clarence Coast 18 – 12.

Damon Coldwell added a further double in Round Four when he started at left centre as Ballina defeated Kyogle 38 – 10. Starting at left centre in Round Five, Damon Coldwell added a further try as Ballina defeated Clarence Coast.

Playmakers ensure all Gold Coast final

THE 2020 Langer Cup grand final will be an all Gold Coast affair after a Tom Weaver and Ryan Rivett-inspired Palm Beach Currumbin SHS beat a gallant Ipswich SHS 34-6 yesterday.

PBC will now confront Keebra Park, whose flash of form to down Wavell SHS 32-8 in the earlier game will send shivers down the spine of its opponents next Wednesday.

In a match featuring a wonderful forward contest, ultimately it was the deft touches of PBC halves Rivett and Weaver which proved to be decisive.

“They were really good our halves’’ said PBC coach Brad Davis. “But that came on the back of a lot of hard work.

“Ipswich really challenged us, they were really physical in defence and they were running really hard.

“For us it took a lot of effort on effort to get on top of them. Having said that, what a preparation, a good, tough finals win.’’

PBC halfback Weaver was like a drover’s dog, never far from the action and on hand to provide the final pass for his team’s first three tries.

Rivett’s lovely short kicking game in the second half constantly turned Ipswich around. He also scored a fine individual try to wrap up the match with 13 minutes left.

Ipswich SHS didn’t give up without a fight.

The team abandoned the dressing room at halftime, preferring to stay out on Langlands Park for coach Joshua Bretherton’s address.

PBC kept them waiting for the restart, but when the whistle blew for the second half it was on for young and old.

In the end it was a clever kicking game from Rivett which generated pressure that ultimately led to Weaver putting Deine Mariner over and his side into the lead 16-6 .

Then came Rivett’s individual try and, trailing 22-6 with 12 minutes to play, Ipswich SHS was bailing water.

In the earlier match, a Levi Jones hat-trick launched Keebra Park into the grand final, vanquishing the demons of its seven-try defeat to Wavell in Round 1 by holding them to just eight points.

Keebra’s lethal left edge, starring Jones, second-rower Kobe Wood, centre Jahream Bula and chiming fullback Tuvalli Khan-Pereira dismantled the Langer Cup’s top defensive side for four tries.

Right winger Trey Peni sealed the match in the 45th minute before Klese Haas rubbed salt in Wavell’s wounds with his 61st-minute try to make it 32-4 .

Victorious coach Glen Campbell was most impressed by how well Keebra Park executed its game plan.

“It’s been coming,” Campbell said. “We’ve seen through our season that we’ve played some very good football for short periods and then we drifted away.”

Two players were sent off in the final 10 minutes after a high tackle on Wavell sparked a fracas. Wavell scored its second try in the aftermath.

Year 11 Halfback Tom Weaver was quick to punish with a deft pass setting second-rower Daniel Butturini one-on-one on the goal line to score.

Keebra erased that deficit moments later when a strike play sent Keebra captain and right winger Trey Peni racing through a hole on the left wing to tie the match at 4-all.

The 2020 Langer Cup school boy campaign for Keebra Park’s Lachlan West.

In late July 2020 Lachlan West started at fullback for Keebra Park in their Round One Langer Cup school boy rugby league competition match against Wavell State High School finishing the match with one conversions and a try assist when he broke the line down the right side of the field before passing inside to Blake Mozer to score in the second half as Keebra Park went down 38 - 24.

Lachlan West also started at fullback in Keebra Park’s Round Two match against Marsden State High School and in Round Three against Ipswich State High School.

Lachlan West also started at fullback in the Round Four local derby against PBC scoring a double and adding a try assist in a tough 22 – 18 loss after Keebra Park led 14 – 0 early in the first half. Lachlan Wests try assist was as a result of a great cut out pass to his left to put his left wonger outside his firect opponent and giving him a direct passage to the try line.

Lachaln West scored his first try in the first half when after breaking the line down the left touch line he outpaced the PBC cover defence to score in the corner. Lachlan West’s second try came late in the second half when he raced though a gap in the left side of the PBC defence when a player came out of the line. Lachlan West exploited that situation to run thirty five metres to score near the right corner to get back Keebra Park back in the match.

The 2020 Langer Cup school boy campaign for Keebra Park’s Connor Te Kani.

After attending Brisbane Grammar School in 2019 and playing First XV GPS rugby there, Connor Te Kani moved back to the Gold Coast in 2020 attending Keebra Park State High School and started Round One of the Langer Cup school boy rugby league competition at half back against Wavell State High School kicking one conversions in Keebra Park’s 38 – 24 loss.

Connor Te Kani also started at half back in Keebra Park’s Round Two match against Marsden State High School kicking three conversions and a late penalty goal. Connor Te Kani added three conversions from four attempts as Keebra Park defeated Ipswich State High School 22 – 16 in Round Four of the Langer Cup.

Connor Te Kani also started at half back in the Round Four local derby against PBC recoding a try assist in the first first half when he put through a kick which was grounded in the in goal by Titans contracted centre Jahream Bula.

Connor Te Kani continued his run of starts at half back in Round Five away to St Mary’s Toowoomba and had a big match in the Keebra Park 46 – 12 victory kicking six goals and recoring three try assists.

Connor Te Kani’s first try assist came when he got into dummy half a metre out from the St Mary’s line and threw a good pass to his left to a charging Yorel Alapaki who scored near the left upright. I know that the pass sounds simple, but it was not as there were defenders everywhere and he had to delay the pass to just the right moment to put his runner into the gap.

Connor Te Kani’s second try assist came late in the first half, with Connor Te Kani operating on the right, he received the ball two passes off the ruck and ran the ball paralell to the defensive line and threw a short no look pass to a straight running Seth Niketemo who went straight through a gap to score from ten metres out.

Connor Te Kani’s final try assist came in the second half. Connor Te Kani once again was running parallel to the defensive line, this time to the left and put in a right foot grubber kick which sat up perfectly for Jahream Bula to run onto a metre from the try line and cross easily.

Connor Te Kani also started at half back as Keebra Park qualified for the 2020 Langer Cup Grand Final on the back of a big win over Wavell State High School as was once again their primary goal kicker including two outstanding conversions from the left touch line to convert Keebra Parks first two tries of the match, both scored by Levi Jones in the left corner.

Connor Te Kani started the 2020 Langer Cup Grand Final at five eight for Keebra Park as they went down 16 – 8 to PBC in a high quality match with Connor Te Kani recording a try assist when he held up the ball perfectly on the right in a planned Keebra Park move to put Trey Peni into a gap after he had looped around from his right wing to the left for a perfectly executed try.

Seth Nikotemo also started from the bench in Round Five against St Mary’s College Toowoomba, playing on the right when he came on and scored a try in each half in an outstanding performance.

Seth Nikotemo’s first try was as a result of an outstanding straight power run from ten metres out.

On the last tackle, Blake Scott took the ball down a short blind side, off laoding to Seth Nikotemo who was standing still at the time, he was able to step off his right foot but was held by one leg but Seth Nikotemo was able to reach out and put the ball down with his right arm to score a much deserved double.

The 2020 Langer Cup school boy campaign for Keebra Park’s and Titans contracted Jahream Bula.

In term three of the 2020 school year Jahreem Bula was part of the Keebra Park Open A Langer Cup school boy rugby league side starting Round One at left centre against Wavell State High School and also started at left centre in Round Two against Marsden State High School scoring his first try of the 2020 Langer Cup competition.

In the second half Keebra Park half Connor Te Kani put up a huge bomb, the Marsden left side defence could not take the ball on the full with it rebounding back into the in goal and it was a case of Jahream Bula wanting it more as he charged through and even though the Marsden fullback was a lot closer to the ball, Jahream Bula’s effort was far more urgent and he dived on the ball first.

Jahream Bula continued his run of starts at left centre in a Round Three 22 – 16 win over Ipswich State High School. Jahream Bula had a solid match including a long line break in the second half. Jahream Bula took a hit up receiving the ball to the left of the play the ball and stepped off his left foot and broke through the centre of the Ipswich ruck and only the fullback prevented Jahream Bula from scoring an outside individual long range fifty mtre try.

Jahream Bula also started at left centre in the Round Four local derby against PBC scoring his second try of the competition when he raced through to ground a short attacking kick from half Connor Te Kani in the first half.

Jahream Bula also started at left centre in Round Five away to St Mary’s Toowoomba scoring a second half double and also recording a first half try assist.

Jahream Bula also started at left centre as Keebra Park qualified for the 2020 Langer Cup Grand Final on the back of a big win over Wavell State High School with Jahream Bula scoring an outstanding solo try just before half time in the big win.

Jahream Bula took a hit-up forty two metres out from the time, to the left of the play the ball and flew through the initial defensive line with a subtle left foot step which propelled him through a gap behind the ball the move before he produced another left foot step to beat the Wavell fullback and score under the posts.

Jahream Bula started the 2020 Langer Cup Grand Final at left centre for Keebra Park as they went down 16 – 8 to PBC in a high quality match.

In the Courier Mail 2020 Langer Cup Team of the Year, Jahream Bula was named in starting side in the centres.

Titans contracted Thomas Weaver started the 2020 Langer Cup Grand Final at half back for PBC as they defeated Keebra Park 16 – 8 in a high quality match kicking a conversion from the left touch line and a key penalty goal early in the second half, recording two try assists and also forcing Keebra Park to restart play on three occasions from drop outs as a result of outstanding attacking kicks, forcing Keebra Park to make the ball dead.

Both of Thomas Weaver’s try assists came in the first half and both on the left side of the field and like multiple other occasions in the Langer Cup in 2020, Thomas Weaver took the ball right to the line before off laoding to his left.

For his first try assist, Thomas Weaver put a great short pass to a charging Daniel Butterini who was running an outside shoulder route into a gap and his second was a long looping cut out pass to Troy Duckett to dive over in the corner.

Understandably Thomas Weaver was named Player of the Match.

In the 2020 Walters Cup Grand Final Titans contracted William Semu started at right centre for Marsden State High School as they defeated PBC with William Semu deservedly named player of the match on the back of a two try performance and setting up Marsden’s opening try.

As noted above, William Semu got the try assist for Marsden’s first try when after being tackled low, produced a perfect right armd flick pass to his right winger to rae eighteen matres to score.

William Semu scored his first try of the match in the first half in a brutal display of size, speed, power and aggressiveness. William Semu backed up a break by the Marsden right winger. Once William Semu received the pass on the inside he immediately cut back towards the touch line around dtwenty metres out. On his way to the line, William Semu produced two powerful and aggressive left arm fends to literally throw off two attempted tackles before diving over for an outstanding try.

William Semu’s second try of the match which came in the second half was a long range solo effort when he swooped on a PBC error running eighty five metres, easily outpacing the PBC defence to score under the posts at the Easts League Club end of Langlands Park.

The 2020 GPS First XV school boy rugby season for Syris Schmidt:

Syris Schmidt started at No. 10 for the TSS First XV in their internal trial in mid-July 2020 and played the 2020 GPS school boy First XV season as a full colours TSS rugby representative. Syris Schmidt also started at No. 10 against Nudgee College being the first trial TSS had against another GPS school. In the match against Nudgee Syris Schmidt kicked two conversions from four attempts, and was solid in general play in wet and muddy conditions.

Syris Schmidt also started at No. 10 in the TSS First XV’s final trial against Anglican Church Grammar School on the Gold Coast kicking three conversions as the TSS First XV completed their GPS preparations with a tight 31 – 29 victory.

Round One of the GPS school boy rugby First XV competition proper saw Syris Schmidt start at No. 10 for TSS against Brisbane State High School, scoring and kicking three conversions and a penalty goal as TSS started the season with a 49 – 19 victory. Syris Schmidt scored late in the first half when he sliced through the BSHS line when he received the ball from a TSS scrum win five metres out from the line.

Round Two against Toowoomba Grammar School saw Syris Schmidt move to inside centre (No. 12) and for me he was easily the best player on the field on his way to scoring the first TSS try of the match, assisted in two others, kicked three conversions and two penalties.

In relation to his try, Syris Schmidt received the ball a pass off the back of a ruck, before dummying his way through the Toowoomba Grammar School line to score tn metres to the right of the goal posts.

Syris Schmidt’s first try assist early in the second half came from a smart piece of play. Toowoomba Grammar School threw the ball to their right with the No. 10 trying to beat Syris Schmidt one on one, Syris Schmidt stole the ball perfectly before sending Titans contracted Kaleb Ngamanu on a forty metre run to the line.

Syris Schmidt’s second try assist sealed the match late when a sleight of hand from a TSS scrum win send the TSS right winger over close to the left upright. Post match Syris Schmidt was awarded three points from the TSS coaches in the player of the season race.

Syris Schmidt started at inside centre once again in Round Three against Brisbane Grammar School kicking a conversion and a penalty goal as TSS prevailed 20 – 15 in a tight encounter. As a result of his performance in the match, Syris Schmidt received an honourable mention by the coaches when they nominated their award winners for the match.

In the pivotal 2020 GPS school boy rugby First XV Round Four match against Brisbane Boys College Syris Schmidt moved back to No. 10 and kicked two penalties from as many attempts.

In Round Four against Gregory Terrace Syris Schmidt moved back to No. 12 (inside centre) for the home match, kicking the game winning penalty after the final siren to see TSS home 23 - 22. Syris Schmidt kicked another penalty in the first half and also a first half conversion. Syris Schmidt received an honourable mention by the TSS coaches in the TSS First XV 2020 Player of the Season voting.

Syris Schmidt was back at fly half (No. 10) for Round Five against Ipswich Grammar School and was part of the winning side in his last official First XV match for TSS.

The 2020 school boy rugby league season for Titans contracted second rower Arama Hau.

Arama Hau played the 2020 school boy rugby league season as part of the Keebra Park Year Ten Walters Cup side, including starting at left second row in their 14 – 12 semi-final 14 – 12 loss to Marsden State High School. A match that saw Arama Hau score a double with both tries coming in the second half.

Arama Hau’s first try came when he ran down a short blid side, breaking four tackles whilst maintaining his balance to slam the ball down one handed a metre in from the left corner post. In relation to his second try, Arama Hau had initially came back underneath a Keebra Park play ot the left but did not get the ball, Arama Hau reset himself to take the hit up from the subsequent play the ball, taking the ball to the right off the dummy half, before cutting back behind the play the ball to charge over to bring Keebra Park within two points late.

Arama Hau also had an outstanding match earlier in the year in the Walters Cup regular rounds against St Mary’s in Round Five, scoring an outstanding try and well as one of the best hit-ups I have seen by a rugby league forward.

Arama Hau’s try came in the second half of Keebra Park’s big 52 – 0 victory. Arama Hau took the ball three passes off the ruck on the left side of the field, bursting through the St Mary’s line and charging seventy metres down the left touch line, easily beating the St Mary’s fullback with pace and was even able to bring the ball around to put it down under the posts.

As noted, in the match Arama Hau also made one of the best runs that I have seen. In the opening minutes of the match from a tap restart from a Keebra Park penalty, Arama Hau took the ball off the penalty restart charging onto the ball from forty metres out, powering through the initial defensive line and dragging four defenders to within ten metres of the try line. Keebra Park scoring from the ensuing play the ball.

The 2020 school boy rugby league season for Titans linked Coby Black.

In 2020 Coby Black was a member of the Coombabah State High School Hancock Cup school boy rugby league side, playing at half in their matches.

In Round One against Forest Lake State High School Coby Black kicked two conversions from as many attempts, including an outstanding conversion from the right touch line however Coombabah went down by two points in the opening round.

In Round Two against Wavell State High School Coby Black kicked two conversions from as many attempts and also had a try assist in a 12 – 10 Coombabah victory in a physical and at times aggressive match.

Coby Black’s try assist came in the first half when he took the ball to the line on the left side of the field about ten metres out from the Wavell line and threw a well weighted pass to left centre Izayah Petrichvech who ran an outside shoulder route into a gap to score out wide.

Round Three saw Coby Black two two conversions from as many attempts and also a penalty goal agaisnt PBC and Coby Black was also kicked a towering bomb which was dropped by the PBC and subsequently collected by Coombabah to score.

In Round Four against Keebra Park Coby Black was involved in all three of Coombabah’s tries and also converted all three as Coombabah defeated their Gold Coast school rivals in a close contest.

In addition to putting up the bomb that led to one Coombabah try Coby Black recorded try assists for the other two tries which were both scored by the Coombabah fullback. In the first instance Coby Black threw an out the back pass to his right off a Coombabah scrum win to put his fullback into a gap and run sixty metres to score. Coby Black’s second try assist was as a result of a pass to left when he once again found his fullback in space to score from twenty metres out.

Coby Black had an outstanding match in Round Five of the competition against Marsden State High School, kicking two conversions from four attempts, with his two misses being from the right touchline with both not missing by much. Coby Black also had a try assist in the match, was heavily involved in another and also produced an outstanding individual defensive play that saved a try mid-way through the second half.

Coby Black’s outstanding piece of individual play came in the second half. Titans contracted William Semu made a long break down the left of the field and was in the process of being the ball around to put it down closer to the posts. Coby Black did not give up on the play and flew in to confront Semu. Even though William Semu braced himself for the contact, the strength of Coby Black’s hit, and his timing forced the ball lose, saving the try for Coombabah State High School.

The 2020 school boy rugby league season for Titans contracted Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa.

In 2020 Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa attended Marsden State High School as part of their Rugby League Excellence Program playing in the Marsden State High School Hancock Cup side starting all matches at lock and to say he was simply outstanding across the competition would be a massive understatement. A 2020 Hancock Cup team mate was William Semu who was a fellow Titans contracted player.

In Round One of the 2020 Hancock Cup against PBC Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa started at lock, playing the entire sixty minutes of the match and was dominant throughout including an incredible sixty metre run in the second half where he brushed aside multiple PBC defenders.

Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa also contributed a second half try assist to Marsden’s big win. In the second half with Marsden on the attack on the last tackle, Marsden threw the ball to the right and a long pass found Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa. Instead of just trying something unconventional Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa got on the outside of his opposing PBC defender before drawing the PBC left winger to give his Marsden State High School team mate an unimpeded run to the try line.

In Round Two against Forest Lake State High School Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa was even more dominat contributing two tries to another big Marsden State High School big win. Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa’s first try which came in the first half was impressive. Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa chased a Marsden tactical kick down field, the PBC fullback tried to beat him with footwork but Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa got hold of him and stripped the ball in a one on one tackle racing twenty metres to score.

Whilst his first try may have had some subtlty about it, Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa’s second half try did not. From a tap from a penalty twenty metres out from the Forest Lake line, Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa took the hit up and smashed through the PBC forward pack to smash the ball down with his right arm just to the right of the uprights to score a try few players, regardless of age level or quality of the opposition ever could even contemplate scoring.

Round Four against Wavell State High School saw Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa start once again at lock and he had a huge match scoring a try (and came close to scoring two others) and recording a try assist as Marsden scored a bg win against their fellow Brisbane based school.

Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa’s try came in the first half, with Marsden State High School on the attack, Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa took a pass off the dummy half to the left of the play the ball around ten metres out and charged straight through the Wavell defence to score.

Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa’s try assist also came in the first half when on the last tackle he took the ball to the line and threw a well timed short pass to his left to fellow Titan contracted player William Semu who ran straight into a gap to score to the left of the uprights.

In a sign of Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa’s confidence and skill set, the first half saw Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa take the ball to the line and just prior to contact, put in a perfectly weighted chip kick which he regathered before off laoding to his right. Whilst a try did not result from the play (it almost did) the sequence highlights the extraordinary skill set of this young man with the promise of a lot more to come.

Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa was also prominent in Round Five against Coombabah State High School and early in the first half was held up over the try line after a strong surge from ten metres out. The match also saw Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa kick one conversion from two attempts. Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa comfortably kicked his first attempt at goal from around fifteen metres to the left of the up rights before just missing his second attempt from the left touch line.

In the second half Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa executed one of the most outstanding tackles that I have ever seen. Coombabah kicked into touch from a penalty, taking the tap restart on the half way mark passing twice to a forward to take a hit up, Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa hit with with a supurb right shoulder tackle just after the Coomabah forward received the ball. It was a great tackle.

In the 2020 Hancock Cup Grand Final Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa started at lock and played the entire match as Marsden prevailed 26 – 24 as a result of an after the siren penalty goal. In the match Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa played a fair bit of first receiver, primarily on the left looking to link with fellow Titan William Semu but also operated in the first receiver role on the right as well.

It was from the first receiver role on the right that Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa was involved in Marsden’s second try of the match when he threw a long pass to his right to create space for the Marsden right side outside backs.

Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa also produced a smart piece of play to score Marsden’s first try of the match. With PBC trying to bring the ball off their own try line Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa darted out of marker to the right of the play the ball as the PBC runner ran in that direction. Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa grabbed hold of the PBC runner, ripping the ball free on a one on one strip to then spin counter clock wise and crash over five metres to the left of the uprights.

After the competition of the preliminary rounds of the Hancock Cup and prior to the final Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa made the move to the Marsden State High School Walters Cup side coming off the bench in their 14 – 12 semi-final victory over Keebra Park to progress to the Grand Final against PBC.

Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa had in fact started earlier in the Walters Cup season when he started at lock against Wavell State High School.

The 2020 school boy rugby league season of Titans contracted William Semu.

In 2020 William Semu attended Marsden State High School as part of their Rugby League Excellence Program playing in the Hancock Cup school boy rugby league competition across a number of positions including fullback and second row even though in previous seasons he was more known exclusively known as a second rower. A 2020 Hancock Cup team mate was Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa who was a fellow Titans contracted player.

In Round One of the 2020 Hancock Cup against PBC William Semu was outstanding as Marsden went on to record a big win with William Semu scoring a second half try in the match. With Marsden attacking the line around three metres out, William Semu called the ball off the dummy half down a short blind side on the left ofteh field and beat three defenders, including one with a spin move to score in the left corner.

In Round Two against Forest Lake State High School, William Semu also started at fullback and was once again a key contributor to Marsdens big win including scoring for the second 2020 Hancock Cup match in a row.

With Marsden on the attack ten metres out from the Forest Lake try line on the right of the field William Semu was standing behind the play the ball. Just as the ball was played William Semu took off to the right of the play the ball. Once he received the ball off the dummy half William Semu charged straight at the line and ran straight over the top of the initial defender before bringing the ball around to place it under the posts.

Round Four against Wavell State High School saw William Semu move to the left second row position and he had a huge match scoring a hat trick (and came close to scoring two others late in the match) as Marsden State High School had a big win against their Brisbane school rivals.

William Semu’s first try which was in fact the first try of the match was an outstanding long range individual effort by the talented young man. William Semu came back underneath the Marsden five eight on the left side of the field and burst through the Wavell defence forty five metres out from the Wavell line and easily rounded the fullback to bring the ball around to put it down under the goal posts.

William Semu’s second try of the first half came when he ran into a gap ten metres out from the Wavell State High School try line on the left side of the field off a well timed and weighted pass from fellow Titan contracted player, Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa. As soon as William Semu received the ball he stepped off his right foot to ensure that the gap stayed directly in front of him and then no-one was going to prevent him from scoring mid-way between the corner post and goal post on the left side of the field.

William Semu completed his hat trick in the second half. With a scrum with a Marsden feed ten out from the line and ten metres in from the left touch line William Semu packed in at lock. William Semu picked up the ball at the base of the scrum and took off to the left down the short blind side and brushing off two defenders to score in the left corner.

William Semu, playing left second row added a further Hancock Cup try in Round Five against Coombabah State High School when once again he packed into a scrum with a Marsden feed at lock ten metres out from the line and ten metres in from touch. William Semu picked up the ball from the base of the scrum running to his left down the blind side and crashed over between two Coombabah defenders. The try was identical to a try that William Semu scored in Round Four against Wavell State High School.

William Semu could have had a double in the match, but after an oustanding run when he took the ball fifty metres out and stepping off his right foot to beat the initial defensive line. A strong right arm fend saw William Semu beat the fullback and stumble in the tackle before getting to his feet but the ball was stripped out over the try line.

In the Hancock Cup Grand Final against PBC William Semu started at left second row in Marsden’s after the final siren 26 – 24 win and produced some outstanding runs including one memorable one midway through the hfirst half when after taking the ball off a Marsden Penalty restart charged directly through the PBC defensive line making twenty five metres through pur strength and power.

William Semu imposed his incredible skill on the match in the first half. Marsden put up a bomb towards William Semu’s side of the field. William Semu leapt above the PBC defence to take the contested ball on the full around eighteen metre out. William Semu maintained his balance when he landed and took off towards the try line. When he grabbed by the PBC defence, William Semu produced a top quality off load to his left with his right arm to send his support over for Marsden’s second try of the match.

After the competition of the preliminary rounds of the Hancock Cup and prior to the Grand Final William Semu made the move to the Marsden State High School Walters Cup side coming off the bench in their 14 – 12 semi-final victory over Keebra Park to progress to the Grand Final against PBC, scoring a first half try.

Keebra Park put in a short attacking kick which was fielded in the in goal by the Marsden fullback who took off down the left touch line, as the cover defence came across he passed inside to William Semu who had loomed up and sprinted fifity metres to score in the left corner.

In the 2020 Walters Cup Grand Final William Semu started at right centre for Marsden State High School as they defeated PBC with William Semu deservedly named player of the match on the back of a two try performance and setting up Marsden’s opening try.

The 2020 Hancock Cup season of Will Saunders.

The talented PBC student started at hooker for the PBC Hancock Cup School Boy Grand Final side that went down in heart breaking fashion 26 – 24 to Marsden State High School who kicked a penalty goal after the final siren.

Throughout the Grand Final Will Saunders took on the giant Marsden forward pack and was the deserved scorer of PBC’s first try of the match, when from close range he darted out of dummy half to the right of the play the ball to force his way over ten metres in from the left corner post.

Will Saunders was also heavily involved in PBC’s try early in the second half when he picked up the ball from the back of a scrum ten metres out before getting it early to Ray Puru down the blind side for the flying winger to score in the right corner. The play seemed to be a perfectly performed set play by PBC.

Will Saunders was at his nippy best in Round Three of the 2020 Hancock Cup competition against Coombabah State High School when he darted to his right out of dummy half from around three metres out and was able to get the ball down with two defenders trying to hold him up.

Will Saunders also scored for PBC in Round Two agaisnt Keebra Park. When PBC put in a clearing kick from their own territory, Will Saunders followed through down the centre of the field. Keebra Park could not retrieve the ball and it was taken by PBC down the right touchline and Will Saunders was correctly positioned to get the pass to run twenty metres to score. If Will Saunders had not chased the kick hard, PBC and of course himself would not have scored the try.

The 2020 Hancock Cup school boy season of Ray Puru.

The talented PBC student started on the right wing for the PBC Hancock Cup School Boy Grand Final side that went down in heart breaking fashion 26 – 24 to Marsden State High School who kicked a penalty goal after the final siren.

Ray Puru scored an impressive double in the match with the first of his two tries coming early in the second half when he produced an outstanding in and away to beat the Marsden left winger down the blind side to dive over in the right corner. The play appeared to be a set move from the back of a scrum with Will Saunders picking up the ball from the back of a scrum ten metres out before getting it quickly and early to Ray Puru to turn his speed and elusiveness into an outstanding try.

Ray Puru’s second try came late in the match when his scintillating speed was on display once again. Ray Puru was on the end of a PBC backline movement starting in their own territory. Ray Puru had to back track to take the long pass to his wing around eighty five metres out from the Marsden SHS line. When he spun around after collecting the ball Ray Puru exploded down the right touch line beating the initial desperate Marsden defenders with sheer pace. To beat the fullback Ray Puru produced and outstanding left arm fend and then was able to dive over ten metres in from the right corner post to level the scores at 24 all.

Ray Puru also scored in Round Four against Forest Lake State High School when he crossed in the left corner untouched from ten metres out after some good work in his inside by hooker Will Saunders. The second half of the match also saw Ray Puru make an outstanding run after fielding a kick off. Ray Puru took the ball near the right touch line bring the ball towards the centre of the field before stepping off his left foot to beat the initial defensive line before he was brought down after a thirty metre effort.

Ray Puru also scored in Round Three against Coombabah State High School when he was on hand to get the ball down in the right corner after diving full stretch to get his hands on the ball after the Coombabah left side defence misjudged a PBC kick to the wing, allowing Ray Puru to get to the ball just before it went touch in goal.

The 2020 Hancock Cup school boy season of Creedence Donovan.

The talented PBC student started at fullback for the PBC Hancock Cup School Boy Grand Final side that went down in heart breaking fashion 26 – 24 to Marsden State High School who kicked a penalty goal after the final siren.

Creedence Donovan scored an impressive and critical try late in the first half he chased through a kick and was on the spot to pick up the ball when it could not be regathered by the Marsden defence to put the ball down under the posts literally as the half time siren was sounding.

Creedence Donovan not only had a very good Hancock Cup Grand Final but also had a number of stand out matches in the regular rounds of the Hancock Cup including an impressive match against Wavell State High School in Round Five when he scored a hat trick, all three being long range efforts with all of those tries coming in the first half.

One of Creedence Donovan’s tries was an impressive eighty metre solo effort off a PBC scrum win. Creedence Donovan received the ball two passes to the left of the scrum win, producing a bueatiful left foot step to beat the initial defender before a Creedence Donovan right foot step gained him separation from the Wavell inside defender coming across and then that point it was shut the gate as Creedence Donovan accelerated away to score near the left corner.

Creedence Donovan’s second try of the match also highlighted Creedence Donovan’s speed, when he backed up a long break by PBC five eight Jake Lateo who drew the fullback, passing to his left to Creedence Donovan who accelerated away to score.

Creedence Donovan scored his third try when he followed through a long PBC clearing kick. The Wavell fullback let the ball bounce and Creedence Donovan flew threw to grab the ball that had bounced arkwardly for the fullback to score untouched.

In Round two of the 2020 Hancock Cup Creedence Donovan started against Keebra Park on the left wing and with Keebra Park on the attacked down their right, Creedence Donovan swooped on an attempted cut out pass by Keebra Park to take the intercept and run ninety metres to score with daylight second.

The PBC student started in the front row for the PBC Hancock Cup School Boy Grand Final side that went down in heart breaking fashion 26 – 24 to Marsden State High School who kicked a penalty goal after the final siren.

Jonah Beaven was deservedly named the 2020 Hancock Cup Grand Final Player of the Match after taking on the giant Marsden State High School forward pack for the entire fifty minutes of the match in a tireless display and courage and all out effort. Jonah Beaven did not have the size of his opponents but he made up for that with all out effort and sheer intensity.

Jonah Beaven not only had a very good Hancock Cup Grand Final but also had a number of stand out matches in the regular rounds of the Hancock Cup including an impressive match against Wavell State High School when he once again took on and excelled against other giant forward pack. It was the same situation against Keebra Park as well in the regular rounds of the 2020 Hancock Cup competition.

Joanh Beaven also also impressive in Round Four against Forest Lake State School including a thirty metre charge through the centre of the Forest Lake ruck. After a quick play the ball by Jonah Beaven PBC moved the ball to the left, scoring soon after.

The talented PBC student started at five eight for the PBC Hancock Cup school boy Grand Final side that went down in heart breaking fashion 26 – 24 to Marsden State High School who kicked a penalty goal after the final siren.

Jake Lateo scored an impressive try late in the second half. Operating on the left, Jake Lateo threw a beautiful long cut out pass to PBC left winger Bailey Simpson who after running down the left touch line kicked inside. Jake Lateo backed up in the inside retrieving the ball close to the Marsden line under heavy pressure. To create space for himself to separate from the close in defenders Jake Lateo spun 360 degrees counter clockwise and was able to force his way over from close range fifteen metres out from the left goal post to get PBC within four points in the dying stages of the Grand Final.

Jake Lateo was also heavily involved in PBC’s try that was scored right on the half time siren by fullback Creedence Donovan when he was able to beat a tackle and start the movement down a short blind side near the right touch line around seventy metres out from the Marsden SHS try line that led to Creedence Donovan ultimately scoring under the posts.

Jake Lateo not only had a very good Hancock Cup Grand Final but also had a number of stand out matches in the regular rounds of the 2020 Hancock Cup including an impressive match against Wavell State High School in Round Five when Jake Lateo recorded three try assists in PBC’s impressive victory.

Jake Lateo’s first try assist came as he split the Wavell SHS defence with a left foot step off a PBC scrum win, running sixty metres before drawing the fullback and passing to his left to fullback Creedence Donovan who had loomed up on his outside. Jake Lateo was also heavily involved in another Creedence Donovan first half try when he put up a big mid-field bomb which was let bounce by Wavell and Creedence Donovan flew through to get to the ball on the bounce.

Jake Lateo’s third and final try assist of the match came in the second half, when Jake Lateo ran to the left of the field, ten metres out from the line and brought his left second rower back underneath to crash over next to the left uprights.

In Round Four against Forest Lake State High School Jake Lateo scored as well as recording a further two try assists. Jake Lateo’s try was a hard working effort when he took the ball from the dummy half around ten metres out to the left of the play the ball, cutting back towards the area behind the play the ball to run between two defenders to score near the posts.

Jake Lateo’s two try assists were very different, the first came from a good stab kick to the left for PBC to pounce and the second from a long cut out pass to his left winger who was in space, five metres out from the line. The pass must have travelled around fifteen metres and Jake Lateo put it directly on the chest of his winger.

The 2020 Renouf Cup school boy season of Tyler Small.

The PBC student started at left centre for the PBC Renouf Cup School Boy Grand Final side that went down in heart breaking fashion 10 – 8 to Marsden State High School with Tyler Small scoring PBC’s sole try of the match late in the second half to get PBC on the board before a late try to Marsden State High School in the left corner saw PBC lose in heart breaking fashion after their great fight back.

Tyler Small’s try came when he chased through a well weighted kick from the PBC half, Tyler Small fly through to take the ball on the full and then stepped off his left foot to get around the Marsden State High School fullback and as a consequence he was able to bring the ball around to put it down directly behind the left upright to make the conversion far easier for five eight Tyler Wright.

Tyler Small not only had a very good 2020 Renouf Cup Grand Final but also had a number of stand out matches in the regular rounds of the Renouf Cup including an impressive three try effort against Wavell State High School in Round FIve.

In the Round Five match against Wavell the first two tries that Tyler Small scored were very similar. On both occasions Tyler Small, playing left centre, was on the end of PBC backline movements receiving the ball in open space and crossing in the left corner with one of the tries described coming in each half.

Tyler Small’s third try of the match was a fraction different than the other two. Tyler Small followed through a stab kick to his side of the field, being the left, timing his run to get to the ball taking it above his head between two Wavell SHS defenders and pushing forward to score as the two defenders closed in.

In Round Four of the 2020 Renouf Cup against Forest Lake State High School Tyler Small scored a double as PBC proved too good for their Brisbane West based rivals. Tyer Small’s first try came in the opening minutes of the match when he chased through a grubber kick to the left side of the diving on the ball in the in goal before the Forest Lake defenders could defuse the kick into the in goal.

Tyler Small’s second try of the match, which came in the second half also resulted from Tyler Small chasing through a PBC kick. For his second try however Tyler Small chased through a long kick out of PBC’s own half, with Tyler Small getting to the ball in the clear twenty five metres out from the Forest Lake line and he was able to bring the ball around to score under the posts.

Round Three of the 2020 Renouf Cup saw Tyler Small score a further hat trick against fellow Gold Coast school Coombabah State High School, with the first of Tyler Small’s tries coming when he backed up a break from PBC left second rower Sam Stephenson who got a pass away to his left to Tyler Small who ran twenty metres to score.

Tyler Small’s second try resulted when he ran a perfect hard straight line through the Coombabah SHS defence forty metres out from the line, producing a left foot step to beat the initial cover defence and then Tyler Small ran diagonally away from the fullback to score next to the right uprights.

Tyler Small’s completed his hat trick when he backed up a break from his fullback to get the ball from his right to score in the left corner of the field.

Tyler Small added a further try in Round Two against Keebra Park State High School when he backed up a break by Sam Stephenson receiving the ball forty metres out and Tyler Small’s speed allowed him to bring the ball around to put it donw under the posts.

Tyler Small started the 2020 Renouf Cup school boy season off with a bang scoring a double in Round One in a tough loss to eventual Grand Final opponents Marsden State High School. Tyler Small’s first try of the match (and season) resulted from a straight hard run through the Marsden line before he produced a perfectly executed left foot step to beat the fullback and bring the ball around to put it down ten metres to the left of the uprights.

Tyler Small’s second try resulted when he loomed up to the left of PBC left seond rower Sam Stephenson taking the ball fifity metres out and accelerating down the left touch line and Tyler Small was able to bring ball around to put it down near the left upright.

The 2020 school boy Langer Cup competition for Titans contracted Jack Cullen.

In his first year at PBC in 2020 Jack Cullen was part of the PBC Langer Cup Open A school boy rugby league squad, where he operated primarily in the front row, coming off the number in the majority of his appearances in his first year at PBC. In PBC’s first trial after the Covid 19 pandemic, Jack Cullen started in the front row for the PBC A side that played against the PBC B side.

Jack Cullen started Round One of the Langer Cup in the front row as PBC took on Ipswich State High School and had an impressive outing playing extended minutes in PBC’s 22 – 10 victory due to multiple injuries, in fact for me Jack Cullen was clearly the best front rower on the field regardless of team over the duration of the match.

Jack Cullen also started in the front row in Round Two against Wavell State High School and in Round Three against St Mary’s Toowoomba and also scored when he burst through the centre of the St Mary’s ruck and was only stopped less than a metre out from the line right under the goal posts.

After missing a couple of roundsJack Cullen started in the front row for PBC as they qualified for the 2020 Langer Cup final on the back of an impressive 34 – 6 victory over Ipswich State High School producing some outstanding last ditch defence.

Jack Cullen started the 2020 Langer Cup Grand Final in the front row for PBC as they defeated Keebra Park 16 – 8 in a high quality match and more than held his own against a bigger Keebra Park forward pack.

In the Queensland School Boys Final against Kirwan State High School Jack Cullen started in the front row as PBC travelled to take on their North Queensland based opponents going down 24 - 20.

The 2020 school boy Langer Cup competition for Titans contracted Bailey Martin.

In PBC’s first trial after the Covid 19 pandemic, Bailey Martin started at lock for the PBC A side that played against the PBC B side. Unfortunately due to injury Bailey Martin missed PBC’s Langer Cup Round One match against Ipswich State High School.

Bailey Martin came back into the PBC Open Langer Cup side, coming off the bench in Round Two against Wavell State High School and operating as a running forward when he came on in the first half. Bailey Martin was unlucky not to score late in the second half after making a break but a desperate tackle by the Wavell fullback meant he could not ground the ball when he was over the line.

Bailey Martin also started from the bench in Round Three of the Langer Cup against St Mary’s Toowoomba coming onto the field mid-way through the first half playing at lock for PBC as they maintained their unbeaten start to the 2020 Langer Cup competition on the back of a hard fought 16 – 6 victory.

Bailey Martin moved in the PBC starting line at lock for the Round Four Langer Cup local derby against Keebra Park State High School but moved back to the bench for Round Five against Marsden State High School.

Bailey Martin also started on the bench for PBC as they qualified for the 2020 Langer Cup Grand final against Keebra Park on the back of an impressive 34 – 6 victory over Ipswich State High School. Bailey Martin was impressive in the match after coming on towards the end of the first half, especially defensively.

Bailey Martin however also produced an outstanding hit-up early in the second half breaking multiple tackles when he took the ball up just inside the Ipswich end on the left side of the field. As usual Bailey Martin smartly cut back behind the play the ball when he took possession of the ball catching defenders not moving up and made them pay with a twenty metre run.

Bailey Martin started the 2020 Langer Cup Grand Final from the bench for PBC as they defeated Keebra Park 16 – 8 in a high quality match, playing at lock when he came on and literally tackled everything that moved in his stint on the field.

In the Queensland School Boys Final against Kirwan State High School Bailey Martin started on the bench as PBC travelled to take on their North Queensland based opponents and as usual tackled everything that moved when he came on to play in the middle of the field as PBC went down 24 – 20 in tough circumstances.

Brock Priestley started the 2020 Langer Cup Grand Final at right second row for PBC as they defeated Keebra Park 16 – 8 in a high quality match, running some impressive lines especially close to the Keebra Park line.

In the Courier Mail 2020 Langer Cup Team of the Year, Brock Priestley was named in starting side at lock.

In the Queensland School Boys Final against Kirwan State High School Brock Priestley started at right second row as PBC travelled to take on their North Queensland based opponents and scored PBC’s opening two tries as PBC went down 24 – 20 with both tries coming in the first half.

Brock Priestley’s first try of the match came when he was on hand to grab a kick from PBC five eight Ryan Rivett that had rebounded off the Kirwan foot. Brock Priestley displayed good hands to pluck the ball out of the air when running at full speed and once he was through the initial defensive line as a result, veered to his left to beat the fullback and score fifteen metres from the right upright.

Brock Priestley’s second try came late in the first half and was a direct result of Brock Priestley running a perfect hard straight line into a gapt around twenty metres out down the blind side and once he was through the defensive line, no one had any chance of stopping him scoring five metres in from the right corner post.
