The new (restructured) U18 comp is certainly going to be interesting as well. A lot of clubs are going to have trouble balancing there squads. Especially if the RLGC enforces the rules about rep players not being eligible for Div 2 teams.
But the level of competition should be outstanding, especially after the Mal Meninga players return to there junior clubs.

The U18 side did not mate, but quite a few players who would have been in the side such as Ben Liyou and Jake Martin amongst others moved up to the Gold Coast as part of the Titans TEDS program and play in the MM Cup and also almost the entire side are U18 eligible in 2020, so it is nowhere near as concerning as it seems especially when you consider that they lost a game or two in the last couple of minutes for example Round Five.

Titans contracted Ethan Foster was outstanding and he is still U18 eligible in 2020. When you add in a number of the U16's with the returning players I believe that the 2020 version of the Northern Rivers Titans Laurie Daley Cup side will be more than competitive.

Interesting to see Repoama Morris-Ponga start in the centres for the GCRL Burleigh U20 side in their Round Four 28-12 loss to Currumbin with the young New Zealander scoring one of Burleigh’s two tries.

In 2018 he played in 15 GCRL U19 mataches for Burleigh scoring six tries but actually spent a fair bit of time at hooker.

Repoama Morris-Ponga is a former student of powerhouse Auckland Rugby league school, Mount Albert Grammar School (MAGS) and played for the New Lynn Rugby League in Auckland in his junior rugby league days.

Repoama Morris-Ponga has also represented the Cook Islands on a number of occasions including November 2017 in the Pasifika Youth Cup at the U18 level and in fact scored on Day One against New Zealand Maori. Repoama Morris-Ponga has also represented the Cook Islands in rugby, being part of the Cook Islands 2017 U18 World Sevens Tournament team.

Very interesting to see Stanley Farani start at half for the Burleigh U20 GCRL side in their 28-12 Round Four loss to Currumbin. Stanley Farani has been playing on the wing for the Burleigh Hastings Deering’s Colts side since his move to the Gold Coast from New Zealand.

Stanley Farani played in the 2018 Auckland rugby league competition for the Otahuhu Leopards and late in the season as a result of his play for the Leopards started on the wing for the Auckland U18 side in their match against U18 Auckland Niue.

For Auckland’s Pakuranga College Stanley Farani had an outstanding school boy career both in rugby, playing for the school’s First XV primarily at outside centre and rugby league including playing fullback for the school’s First XIII in their 18 – 8 2017 Auckland Rugby League Colleges Championship win against James Cook High School.

At last year’s Pakuranga College awards night, Stanley Farani received awards for both rugby and rugby league. In rugby Stanley Farani was the First XV Most Outstanding Player and Player of the Year awards and in rugby league received the Player of the Year award for the First XIII.

2018 also saw Stanley Farani represent Samoa at the U18 Pasifika Cup that was held in Auckland early in the year.

In Round Six of the Queensland Cup for Burleigh, Jesse Arthars once again started at right centre and scored the first two tries of the match making it seven tries from just six matches this season.

For his first try, Jesse Arthars ran a straight line into a gap in the Wynnum defensive line around sixty metres out from the line, he stepped off his right foot to beat the fullback and also stepped off his right foot once again to beat the Wynnum winger who came from the opposite side of the field to score under the posts. A similar line resulted in his second try when he split the Wynnum defence from around twenty metres out and was able to bring the ball around from the right corner to put it down under the posts.

Playing the full match once again Jesse Arthars ran for a team leading 170 metres (twenty three post contact) had two line breaks, broke three tackles, played the ball at an average speed of 4.05 seconds and made eighteen tackles at a tackling efficiency of 94.74%.

Fullback David Neller had a very good match for the Titans U14 side in February at Mudgeeraba that defeated the Western Mustangs 32 – 8.

David Neller did not necessarily have to do a lot of work defensively as a result of the Titans dominance but returned the ball well from kicks when the opportunity presented itself and also insured that he was available in the centre of the ruck to receive any off loads from the dominant Titans forwards.

The Ipswich Grammar School student (formerly from Mossman State High School in Queensland’s north) has started the 2019 season off well in the Ipswich Rugby League U14 pre-season competition scoring twenty two points from just two matches, with all of those points coming in Round Two of the pre-season against Brothers Ipswich White when he scored two tries and kicked seven goals.

David Neller’s 2019 pre-season stats were enough to see him finish as the competitions equal leading goal kicker (seven) and fourth leading points scorer (twenty two).

David Neller started at fullback in the 2018 U13 Ipswich Grand Final and scored a try and kicked three conversions as Norths prevailed 26 – 22 against Goodna Black in a tight contest.

In total in the 2018 U13 season, David Neller played in fourteen matches scoring seventeen tries (121% strike rate) and kicking thirty nine goals to finish the season with a total points tally of 146 and an average of just over ten points per game.

In 2017 David Neller represented Peninsula at the QSSRL U12 Championships.

Big strong young front rower Larry Siala was one of a number of standouts for the Titans U14 side that defeated the Western Mustangs 32 – 8 in February at Mudgeeraba.

On that hot Saturday Larry Siala had a simply outstanding match constantly making ground with the ball through the centre of the ruck and as a result of his late footwork prior to the line made major metres post contact and also got away a few more than impressive off-loads usually one handed ones at that.

I can also recall a couple of huge hits that he put on a couple of Western Mustangs forwards with a couple forcing the ball loose as a result of the contact by Larry Siala. Larry Siala really did stand out as a young player on the rise in that match.

Larry Siala has recently been selected in the 2019 Ipswich Diggers U14 representative side.

The St Edmunds College (Ipswich) student plays in the Ipswich Rugby League competition, in 2019 playing for Norths in the U14 age group.

In the 2019 U14 pre-season Larry Siala played in three matches scoring five tries, including a hat trick against Goodna Black in Round Three and a Round Two hat trick against Brothers Ipswich White. His five tries was enough to finish the pre-season as the competitions equal second leading try scorer.

Larry Siala started in the front row in the 2018 U13 Ipswich Grand Final and scored a try as Norths prevailed 26 – 22 in a close contest against Goodna Black.

In total in the 2018 U13 season, Larry Siala played in fourteen matches scoring twenty one tries for a strike rate of an impressive 150%.

In 2017 Larry Siala represented Met West in the QSSRL U12 Championships.

The U16 Division One clash tonight in Round One between Coomera and Burleigh has a distinct Titans flavour to it. Kaleb Ngamanu will line up in the centres for Coomera and will be up against Bailey Martin (front row), Kaden Somerville (lock) and Ezra Ubaldino (centre).

A new addition to Burleigh’s side this season is Kye Taaffe who will start in the second row tonight.

The young centre or second rower moved to the Gold Coast this season to play for the Burleigh rom Chinchilla in Queensland’s west.

In 2018 Ky Taaffee played for Chinchilla in the South Burnett Junior Rugby League U16 competition. Due to the fact that there was no U15 competition, Ky Taaffee played against some players a year older that himself. Ky Taaffee first played in the U16 competition as a 14 year old in 2017, all be in in only one match, but still an impressive feat none the less.

In the 2018 South Burnett U16 regular season Ky Taaffee played in eight matches scoring six tries including a hat trick and a double against Cherbourg and also scoring against Kingaroy early in the 2018 season.

Ky Taaffee started all three of Chinchilla’s finals matches in the centres. In Week Two of the Finals he scored a first half try as Chinchilla defeated Murgon and scored in each half of the Grand Final as Chinchilla defeated Nanango 38 – 28.
