I'm expecting a good crowd based off our strong win against the Roosters. A win that was on Friday night footy.

Yup, I'll be making the trek for this one.

If someone gets the chance to get into Dave Taylor's ear before match. Tell him to go easy on us 'n save himself for 2013. ;)

Luke is the heart of the Bunnies attack, shut him down and it goes along way to nullifying their quick play the balls for GI

Just like the Roosters game, I think the only way they'll stand a chance is if we keep giving up stupid penalties. Of course, that's assuming the boys play as consistently as they have the past three weeks.

I think there is more to the Bunnies this year than just Luke and GI. We can have mental lapses, and we do give free metres in the form of penalties.

If it is a low scoring, dour match where out forwards can grind them down, we win. If it turns into a game of touch footy with long range tries coming every ten minutes I don't think we'll be able to maintain the pace.

Here's hoping for a big win to consolidate our spot (or climb back into the eight depending on other results this week) and bump the PD.

Anyone know how Bird, Myles and Bailey have pulled up?

On top of that, Rabbitohs will be coming off two soft games from the Tigers & Dragons. As I said in the other thread - I think they'll be ripe for the picking.
Would mind seeing what TAB will be paying for Titans 13+

Both teams left is equally sketchy in defence however Taylor currently is more dominant and damaging than what Idris is.

If the Titans keep working on getting the ball into the Idris area there are some real good chances to break the line ie. get it into Idris hands for an under or over, get it to Zilly behind Idris or tunnel it to Mead. As Johns said his presence on the right will get the defenders standing still in anticipation.

If we get up here and Bulldogs put one on the Knights we will be sitting amazingly.

Ben Lowe copped an ankle injury today and I saw Reynolds limping towards the end.

I thought the same as Ryan..."Souths are ripe for the picking" but I also thought that the Tigers had a chance to roll them.
As it turned out, Souths got a few early calls and gave the Tigers a smacking.

However, I don't believe Sutton will ever play as good as that again and our defense around the rack should be a lot tighter.
Sutton reminded me of Ben Ikin during his Origin days...he's not dangerous enough for a team to coach against but showed any player in the NRL can play well, if left alone.

I actually think having Isaac Luke out helps the Rabbits attack, as can be seen by the 30+ scores put on St George and Wests in the past fortnight. Luke is a great player but eh massively overplays his hand out of dummy half with all of his passes back across the ruck, flicks etc. With that beast of a pack that they have they benefit from a dummy half who just lets the big men run onto the ball. It's a simple game and he overcomplicates it.

Our defence will be a sterner test than anything they have faced in the past fortnight but it will have to be at its best to keep them out. This is a win at all costs game for us, we cannot afford to lose a game after the Saints and the Knights won so well.

Peats is going very well for them and Merritt is ... well he is Merritt ... they haven't lost too much there. Where we can get them is by turning their forwards around. They aren't the fittest team in the comp but if you take your foot off their throat and give them an inch then ... ask the Roosters.

Usually rivals complain because Greg Inglis is on the field.

But Gold Coast Titans captain Scott Prince is disappointed the suspended fullback won't be running out for South Sydney in their NRL blockbuster on Sunday.

The Titans are flying high after breaking into the top eight with their third straight win - and sixth in nine games.

It is a remarkable turnaround after the Gold Coast's season was all but written off when they started with a 2-7 record, including five straight defeats.

But Prince reckoned taking on a runaway Rabbitohs outfit boasting Inglis in the No.1 jersey would have provided a true gauge to their resurgent form.

Indeed the Titans would be the talk of the NRL if not for the South Sydney juggernaut that has risen to No.2 on the ladder.

"I am looking forward to it (on Sunday). It will be a true test. I regard them as the best team in the comp at the moment," Prince said.

"They are very consistent, they have two young halves (John Sutton, Adam Reynolds) who are the best in the comp at the moment and their pack is star studded.

"(But) you want to play against the best and unfortunately for Souths he (Inglis) will be missing."

While disappointed not to be tackling Inglis, Prince was not taking his replacement Nathan Merritt for granted after the livewire donned the No.1 jersey to help the Rabbitohs thrash Wests Tigers 32-6 last round - their fifth straight win.

"Nathan Merritt stood up and played outstanding against the Tigers. I don't think they will be losing too much," Prince said of his Indigenous All Stars teammate.

"He is very dangerous. He can score a 100m try. Our kick-chase has to be on to snuff out that threat from the back.

"With a player like Nathan it is not about stopping but reducing his impact on the game."

The Rabbitohs may have captured the NRL faithful's imagination but the Titans are the potential feel good story of 2012.

Apart from turning around their disastrous on-field form, the Titans are also making progress off it.

Following a dramatic restructure last week, the new Titans chief executive David May claimed their reported $25 million debt would be wiped within weeks.

"Everyone has been working hard, we haven't turned on each other (and) players have been willing to sacrifice a few things," Prince said.

"I am very proud of the guys but it won't mean anything if we don't play September football."

Harrison named to take on Rabbitohs
Titans | Tuesday 31 July 2012 12:58 PM

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans have today named Queensland State of Origin forward Ashley Harrison to return from injury for Sunday’s blockbuster against the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Skilled Park.

Jetstar Titans Coach John Cartwright today named former Rabbitoh Harrison to return after the Maroons lock missed Origin 3 and four NRL matches for the Titans with multiple fractures in his big toe.

While Harrison’s inclusion provides a boost for the Titans, the club will be without NSW Origin forward Greg Bird after he sustained a minor hamstring injury in last Friday night’s 36-16 victory over the Sydney Roosters.

Harrison, who spent three years at South Sydney from 2003-05 early on in his career, will line-up for his 244th NRL game if he passes fitness tests late in the week.

Harrison’s inclusion is only change from the team which notched the club’s third straight win against the Roosters.

Myles to counter 'Coal Train' Taylor
Travis Meyn | 12:01am August 1, 2012

DEFENSIVE specialist Nate Myles will be deployed to Gold Coast's left edge on Sunday in a bid to stifle Rabbitohs wrecking ball Dave Taylor after Titans enforcer Greg Bird was ruled out of the Skilled Park blockbuster with a hamstring strain.

Bird is expected to miss a week with the minor tear he suffered in the Titans' 36-16 win over Sydney on Friday night.

He is a crucial loss on the left side for the Titans but they will be boosted by the likely inclusion of Queensland lock Ashley Harrison, who is set to return from a six-week lay-off with a broken toe.

Harrison and his Maroons teammate Myles will be given the job of shutting down "Coal Train" Taylor, who was in menacing form against the Tigers. Taylor ran for 207m from 15 hit-ups and continually troubled Wests' defence.

NSW star Bird successfully shut down Taylor in Game Two of the Origin series and earned man of the match honours in the process. Taylor was dropped for the decider.

The Titans have had problems with their left-side defence during Bird's absence but it has improved in recent weeks.

Taylor is Titans-bound next year on a four-year deal and coach John Cartwright said his team had to limit the creative backrower's time with the ball.

"He's in good form for them and can certainly conjure up tries," Cartwright said.

"He's a handful for anyone in front of him. He's such a big, strong, powerful man all you can do is try and take time off him and get up in his face as quick as you can."

Harrison last played in the Titans' 8-6 loss to St George Illawarra in Wollongong on June 22 and is yet to fully run after shattering his toe into six pieces.

"He's got to get through training for the rest of the week. The bone's healed and it's a matter of putting up with a bit of pain," Cartwright said of Harrison.

"He hasn't had a full running session yet but the bone's fully healed.

"He's getting around a lot better. I'd be pretty surprised if he didn't get through the rest of the week."

Bird has had a wretched run with injuries lately, suffering a recurrence of a pectoral strain in the Origin decider before picking up the hamstring problem in his return.

He has played one of the club's past five matches.

Cartwright left the door open for Bird to be a late inclusion against the Rabbitohs but said he was expecting him to return against the Melbourne Storm the following Friday.

"It's a hamstring strain and very rarely do you get them back within a week," he said.

"It's not major but at this stage he won't play this week.

"If we can get a win we'll be close to full strength the following week."

Gold Coast Titans v South Sydney Rabbitohs
Skilled Park
Sunday 3pm

It?s been quite a run of late for the Gold Coast Titans. Four points outside the top eight as recently as a fortnight ago, John Cartwright?s men have strung together three wins for the first time since 2010 to sneak up into eighth spot and give themselves a great chance of claiming a finals berth that has looked so unlikely for much of the season.

But with a logjam of teams also desperate to claim their place in September, the Gold Coast couldn?t have asked for a tougher test than the rampaging Rabbitohs this Sunday afternoon.

Having already cemented their finals berth after winning their past five games, Souths have firmed into $4.50 second favourites to go all the way in 2012 with their star-studded line-up finally living up to their reputation.

Most impressive have been comprehensive victories over St George Illawarra and Wests Tigers in their past two games ? the first without hooker Issac Luke and the second with both Luke and superstar fullback Greg Inglis sidelined.

Rather than capitulate minus two key position players, the Rabbitohs have excelled with veteran Nathan Merritt and young hooker Nathan Peats filling the void with ease.

Needless to say, the Gold Coast still have plenty to contend with at Skilled Park this Sunday with the likes of John Sutton and Dave ?Coal Train? Taylor in career-best form.

However, the Titans should also see this as an opportunity not only to knock over a big gun but to gain a huge edge over their primary rivals for eighth spot, Newcastle, who face competition front-runners Canterbury the night before.
After a rough start to the year both on and off the field, the Titans have welcomed back a number of key players from injury in recent weeks including prop Luke Bailey and back-rower Nate Myles.

They have also been bolstered by the brilliant form of captain Scott Prince and fullback William Zillman, the latter having notched some remarkable stats during his side?s winning run.
Expect them to throw plenty back at Souths during their Close The Gap clash on Sunday.

The Titans have lost Greg Bird to injury again, with the NSW Origin forward suffering a minor hamstring strain; however they welcome back Maroons veteran Ashley Harrison who slots straight back into the No.13 jersey.

Souths will field the same 17 that downed Wests Tigers last week with Shaune Corrigan and Scott Geddes added to an extended bench.

Notably, the Rabbitohs have won nine of their past 11 daytime fixtures while the Gold Coast has dropped five of their past six day games on home soil. And it looms as a particularly special day for the club ? not only because they can make it six wins in a row for the first time in 18 years! Veteran Bunnies Nathan Merritt and John Sutton, with 174 games apiece, have now moved past Bernie Purcell as the 10th-most-capped players in the club?s history. They are closing in on Les Cowie (176), Mario Fenech (181) and Michael Andrews (182).

Watch Out Titans: Can the Gold Coast stop Dave Taylor? The barnstorming back-rower has hit back strongly from his State of Origin dumping last month with a series of devastating performances for the Rabbitohs including a game-high 203 metres against Wests Tigers last week.

Danger Sign: Many expected Souths to struggle in the absence of suspended hooker Issac Luke but with Nathan Peats at the helm they have lost very little from dummy-half.

Peats actually scored the Rabbitohs? first two tries against Wests Tigers from dummy-half last weekend. One of the most-prolific dummy-half sides with an average 24 runs per game this season, they have averaged 20 runs in Luke?s absence over the past fortnight and will continue to test the Titans? marker defence this Sunday. For the record, Souths lead the NRL for both tries scored (12) and line-breaks assists (10) from dummy-half this season.

Watch Out Rabbitohs: The short kick has worked wonders for the Titans in 2012; they are the masters of getting to the ball first from an attacking kick. The Titans rank first in the NRL for ?kick backs? this season at 30 per cent, having reached the short or cross-field kick before the opposition defence on 61 different occasions in 2012.

Danger Sign: The Rabbitohs have been rightly lauded for their solid defence in recent weeks but they have struggled to defend their own line this season. In fact, they rank 14th when it comes to holding sides out from close range with 41 tries conceded from between their try-line and the 10-metre line. Only Canberra and Parramatta have conceded more.

William Zillman v Nathan Merritt: Rival whippets William Zillman and Nathan Merritt will create plenty of excitement for their respective sides this Sunday, having already offered plenty for the highlights reels in recent weeks. Zillman has been a star of the Gold Coast?s resurgence ? twice running for more than 200 metres in the past three weeks ? while Merritt impressed filling in for Greg Inglis at fullback last week with a try and 160 metres to his name. He has scored six tries in his past three games.

Where It Will Be Won: On the edges, where big Dave Taylor will again look to steamroll his side to victory. He has been well-supported by fellow back-rower Chris McQueen in recent weeks; however the pair face a stern test against one of the best back rows in the game with the Gold Coast boasting Mark Minichiello, Nate Myles and Ashley Harrison.

The History: Played 7; Titans 4, Rabbitohs 3. The Titans won the only game played between these two at Skilled Park (22-14 in 2009). Six of their seven clashes have been decided by single figures ? Souths? 31-8 win the last time they met being the exception.

The Last Time They Met: Souths cruised to a comfortable 31-8 victory at ANZ Stadium in Round 15 last year, with Dave Taylor starring just a few days after Queensland?s loss to NSW in game two of the State of Origin series.

Taylor?s performance that night looms as a warning to the Titans, who were missing lock Greg Bird just as they are again this week, with the big man involved early as he pulled in a Chris Sandow cross-field kick before passing to James Roberts to score.

Souths made it 12-0 after 22 minutes when Eddy Pettybourne barged over from dummy-half to score and a Sandow penalty goal soon after gave them a handy 14-0 lead at the break.

The Gold Coast hauled their way back into the game after halftime, with David Mead first to a Preston Campbell bomb and Tomane scoring in near-identical fashion just a few minutes later. But with neither conversion successful, Sandow took the opportunity to extend Souths? lead to seven with 12 minutes remaining before Taylor burst through four defenders to set up Nathan Merritt out wide. Two more tries to Issac Luke and Greg Inglis ensured an easy win for the home side.

The Titans were hurt by missing a whopping 55 tackles while Taylor (192 metres and 10 tackle-breaks) and Rhys Wesser (192 metres and eight tackle-breaks) ran riot against them.
Luke Bailey tried hard for the visitors with 106 metres and 24 tackles.

Match Officials: Referees ? Ben Cummins & Phil Haines; Sideline Officials ? Steve Carrall & Chris Butler; Video Referee ? Sean Hampstead.

The Way We See It: Promises to be a Sunday afternoon special with plenty of points on offer in the forecast sunny conditions. The Titans have every chance here and it wouldn?t surprise to see them steal the win; however Souths have built up plenty of momentum, are full of confidence and deserve favouritism against the lower-ranked side. We can see them sneaking home on the back of their plethora of attacking options. Rabbitohs by six points.

Televised: Channel 9 ? Delayed 4pm; Fox Sports 2 ? Delayed 6pm.

Written off two months into the 2012 NRL season, the Gold Coast believe they can make a major statement against the team on everyone's lips at Skilled Park on Sunday.

The Bulldogs have surged to the top of the NRL ladder with nine straight wins.

But it's Sunday's rivals South Sydney who are the talk of the rugby league world following some stunning performances off the back of an aggressive and jumbo-sized forward pack which could be bolstered by the late addition of Kiwi muscle man Roy Asotasi.

South Sydney's renaissance under new coach Michael Maguire has former Rabbitoh greats excited about a return to the club's glory days and even talking premiership glory for the first time since 1971.

Even without their star attraction Greg Inglis, Souths ran riot against Wests Tigers last weekend, moving into second place on the ladder and confirming their arrival as a genuine premiership threat rather than occasional entertainers.

But while Souths have been creating quite a buzz with their ability to score tries from anywhere on the field, the Titans have been happy to fly under the radar as they quietly breathe life into their own finals push.

"Our forwards have been on fire and we're pretty much at full strength again except for Birdy (Greg Bird)," declared prop Matt White, tipping some shuddering collisions on Sunday.

"Sam Burgess is extremely physical so we need to control him and big Dave Taylor out wide on the edge of the ruck.

"Johnny Sutton runs like an extra back-rower so it's going to be pretty brutal out there."

The Titans are one of several clubs engaged in a dogfight for a top eight finish which coach John Cartwright believes will change frequently during the last five rounds as teams walk the finals tightrope.

"This is a big test for us, we're in a real precarious position still," said Cartwright, who has won all three matches as coach against Souths at Skilled Park.

"The configuration of the eight is going to change a lot between now of the finals and a win against Souths would be enormous for us."

Ashley Harrison, who has missed the Titans' last five games with a broken toe, still has to pass a fitness test on Saturday before being cleared to line up against the Rabbitohs.

"We'll see how it feels later in the week but I know it's healed so I'm hoping I'll be right for Sunday," Harrison said after getting through Wednesday's training session without any dramas.

"We're starting to build something and Souths are another massive test for us on Sunday.

"We're all starting to come back at the right end of the year and hopefully we can keep the roll going and keep that good feeling going."

I honestly believe this is the weekend will determine 8th spot come round 26.
It's between Warriors , Titans and Tigers

Titans should be in the box seat as we play a Souths outfit without their 2 best.
Warriors have a hard one against Sharks but are at home.
Tigers should beat Parra but the other 2 will stay in front with a win.

If we can't beat Souths without their best 2 players, on the Gold coast, we don't deserve to make the top 8.

I've seen Smith single handedly destroy the Storm and we've all seen what Gallon can do..they're both playing this week and Carney to run off the back of a strong pack...don't underestimate an out of form side with these big game players coming back.

Asotasi set to make NRL return

South Sydney co-captain Roy Asotasi is expected to play against Gold Coast on Sunday, with coach Michael Maguire declaring the prop in great shape ahead of the Skilled Park clash.

Provided Asotasi gets through training in good order on Friday at Redfern, Maguire expects the New Zealand international to make his return after being sidelined since April with a ruptured pectoral muscle.

"We're hoping this weekend. He's got another training run today (Friday) to make sure he's OK," Maguire said.

"He's extremely fit. He's in great shape, so we're looking forward to getting him back. He's going to be a big part of what we do, going into the back end of the season."

Impressive young hooker Matt Srama says people will soon be talking about Gold Coast's forgotten forward pack which faces an acid test on Sunday against a high-flying South Sydney.

Along with the in-form Bulldogs, who have stormed to the NRL premiership lead with nine straight wins, Souths have been making a statement of their own under new coach Michael Maguire.

Maguire seems to have found the key to getting a consistent 80 minutes from the red and greens.

Srama, who has made people sit up and take notice since assuming the fulltime dummy-half duties this season, believes his development has blossomed working behind the NRL's most under-rated pack.

"We've pretty much flown under the radar, even though we've just about got a representative pack when you look at them," said Srama, thriving at No.9 with the help of back-up hooker Beau Falloon.

"They all play big minutes and they're playing out of their skin every single week.

"Coming into the finals, everyone is going to hear a lot more of us."

Luke Bailey and Luke Douglas are as tough as any front-rowers and the Titans' first choice back row of Nate Myles, Greg Bird and Ashley Harrison - all State of Origin players - is as good as any going around.

Bird (hamstring) will miss Sunday's game but Harrison returns from a badly-broken toe to help close down the middle.

Gold Coast's head-geared hooker said a victory over Souths, who the Titans suspect might be boosted by the late inclusion of experienced forward Roy Asotasi, would be huge for the players' confidence.

"The Rabbitohs are the form team of the comp at the moment," he said.

"If we can make a late run these last few games, we can secure a spot in the top eight.

"If we get over Souths, we've got all the belief in the world ... we can even go to the grand final."

While they are in frightening form with big John Sutton and Dave Taylor busting sides open, South Sydney - $4.50 premiership second favourites - are the only NRL club who have not won a game at Skilled Park.

South Sydney coach Michael Maguire says his players are embracing the hype surrounding increasing talk of the Rabbitohs breaking a 41-year premiership drought.

The NRL's second-placed team are chasing six straight wins for the first time since 1994 against Gold Coast at Skilled Park on Sunday as they look to continue their outstanding season.

Souths' great run has prompted comparisons with champion Rabbitohs teams from the past and talk of a first premiership since 1971.

But rather than being concerned about his troops getting caught up in the hysteria, Maguire is pleased with the way they are handling it.

"I've got a really good group of senior boys who have experienced these sorts of things," said Maguire of Souths' leadership group which contains Sydney Roosters 2002 premiership winner Michael Crocker.

"I think our players are handling it quite easily. They are really enjoying the fact we've got so much great support behind us.

"Each week we turn up to games and the crowds are getting bigger ... it's adding to everything that we're doing.

"It's building that momentum into the finals and if we can utilise that in some way then I'm sure we're in for a good time ahead."

Rather than adopt a "don't mention the finals" approach, Maguire is happy for his players to talk about the business end of the season.

"We are a very honest group and we talk about it ... we're aware of what's in front of us," he said.

"But we also know that we have to do a job this week to make sure we build that momentum into those finals and play the good footy that we're capable of."

Maguire is expecting a tough clash with the Scott Prince-inspired Titans, who are chasing a fourth consecutive win and looking to cement their place in the top eight.

If the Rabbitohs win and Canterbury lose to Newcastle on Saturday, Souths would find themselves equal on points with the Bulldogs, who have a superior points difference, at the top of the NRL ladder with just four games remaining after this round.

The humble Maguire has no doubt the Rabbitohs will be up to the task and praised his side for sticking to systems put in place.

"It's a credit to the players the way they practice and the practice makes it simple ... we are obviously doing a lot of repetition work and when you're doing that it makes it easier when you are under pressure ... you just go back to what you've been practising."

Tough times steel Titans for Souths clash

Adversity has steeled a Gold Coast Titans outfit that will face its toughest test to date against South Sydney at Skilled Park on Sunday.

Stopping a runaway South Sydney sounds daunting but it pales in comparison to what Gold Coast captain Scott Prince has overcome in the past 12 months.

Steeled by a nightmare 2011, Prince did not flinch when the Titans were tipped to add to last year's wooden spoon after they slumped to a 2-7 record this season.

And after helping them to 9-10 and back into the top eight, Prince certainly won't be blinking first when the in-form Rabbitohs are unleashed in Sunday's NRL blockbuster at Skilled Park.

Prince, 32, has had to deal with family tragedies, broken bones and knee reconstructions in his 15-season career.

But the wily halfback admits last year was one of his most testing.

Rumours of team in-fighting, poor form and of course the Titans' well publicised financial plight - Prince endured it all.

Now with the Gold Coast moving forward under new CEO David May and expected to be debt free in weeks, Prince said the adversity had only made him hungrier for success.

"Last year was probably the most testing 12 months I have had as a professional footballer on and off the field, but I am looking forward now," he told AAP.

"I learned a lot about myself, my teammates and a few people around the club who was on your side and who wasn't - that will never be forgotten.

"But now it is about getting a job done on the field and we are confident that we can do it."

Thanks to Prince's revitalised form, the Titans are flying high with three straight wins - and six in nine games.

The chances of extending that run have been boosted by Queensland lock Ashley Harrison recovering from a toe injury.

By rights, the Titans should be the talk of the NRL.

But five straight wins have ensured South Sydney are the flavour of the month - not that Prince is complaining.

"We are just worried about ourselves. We are pretty proud of what we have already achieved," Prince said.

"We held together, got ourselves out of a rut and put ourselves in contention for the top eight - now it is up to us to stay there.

"The hard work is starting to pay off but you don't want to get complacent.

Asked to explain the secret to his form reversal, Prince said: "I wanted to turn it all around and play September football.

"If we don't make the eight I see it as an unsuccessful year."

Mick Malthouse called in to give South Sydney Rabbitohs a pep-talk

FORMER AFL coach Mick Malthouse has emerged as a secret weapon in South Sydney's charge to the finals, with the three-time premiership winner secretly called into Redfern six weeks ago.

South Sydney coach Michael Maguire asked Malthouse to turn sports psychologist as the Rabbitohs search for the edge to smash a 41-year premiership drought.

A three-time flag winner during a 25-year coaching career with Collingwood and the West Coast Eagles, Malthouse urged the Rabbitohs to avoid setting limitations as they charge into their first finals campaign since 2007.

As the Rabbitohs shoot for their sixth win in a row against the Gold Coast at Skilled Stadium today, Souths forward Dave Tyrell opened up about the pep-talk from Malthouse.

"It's like Mick Malthouse said to us a few weeks ago, if you put a flea in a match box it will only jump that high when you take it out," Tyrell said.

"So don't put yourself in the match box and the sky's the limit.

"That stuck in my mind a little bit. I'm not much of an AFL follower, but he's definitely a name that I know and a person you can take a lot from and learn a lot from.

"The main message was don't limit yourself.

"Madge (Maguire) has put a lot of onus back on us to take things into our own hands and decide where we want to go.

"Competition for spots is pretty hot right now and you have to take your chances when you can get them.

"Obviously we all want to be there, but it's a bit of a dog-eat-dog world."

Malthouse was invited into the Rabbitohs' Redfern bunker by coach Maguire, who has ties to the AFL legend through their respective tenures at Collingwood and the Melbourne Storm.

Luke Bailey's the benchmark for Titans' new boys

LUKE Bailey has never played a good game of football.

It might sound like a harsh assessment, but Gold Coast Titans coach John Cartwright believes it is that type of self-assessment which has made the veteran prop one of the most committed and determined front-rowers in the game today.

When you set standards like Bailey expects of himself, you are never going to be satisfied.

"He is very hard on himself,'' Cartwright said. "He is never happy with his own game. For some guys that can be a negative, but for him it's a positive because he is always looking to improve.

"At his age that is a rare quality. Sometimes you get to a stage of your career where you think you've been there done that, but not Bails. He is always looking to improve his game.

"He is a bit of a marvel. His strength and his fitness just keeps improving.''

How is it that at 32 after 229 NRL games where his body has been broken and battered, Bailey is still doing the hard yards of a prop, and the one per centers that don't create headlines. Why is he always the man leading the kick-chase to trap the fullback in goal, or being the only man rushing up to pressure a kicker?

"It's pride in performance,'' Cartwright said. "There's still things in the game he hasn't achieved, I know for a fact he is desperate to win a grand final.

"He is the best at any club in those little one per centers.''

Those efforts are why Bailey is the man Cartwright points young players towards when they first arrive

"I often put him with younger guys to train because he is such a good leader,'' Titans strength and conditioning coach Chris McLellan said.

"Because he is fit, fitter than most of them, he is the benchmark.

"If you look at his testing results physically, he is not the fittest bloke in the club, not the strongest bloke, not even the fastest bloke. But his commitment to what he requires of himself on the field just goes beyond all of that.

"You can look at three different guys and they might have fairly similar physical results in terms of their fitness. But he will beat them every time because of his commitment.''

Young forward Ben Ridge is one of several Titans to have learnt from Bailey.

"You just look up to him and know where you have to be to perform at that sort of level,'' Ridge said.

"Some of things he does is unhuman (sic) like.

"You could be in the 75th minute of the game and you have to kick-chase and he will be the only one down there chasing and tackle the fullback in goal.

"He pulls things like that out of his hat. NRL is a lot more mental than physical and Luke Bailey is one of the mentally strongest.''

Ashley Harrison knows better than most the value of little efforts.

His own small contributions have helped Queensland to seven consecutive Origin wins.

For Harrison, Bailey's ability to perform at the elite level for over a decade sets him apart.

"That is the difference between just an average player and a good or great player,'' Harrison said. "Bails has been able to do this over a long period of time.

"You see some guys come in and they might have a good season or two in them, but he seems to be doing it every year.

"He is a guy I've never seen cut a corner at training.''

Modesty is another widely used term for Bailey.

When The Sunday Mail first broached the subject of an article about "Bull'', the club suggested he would be the last person wanting to participate.

"Bails is more an actions type guy,'' Harrison said.

Titans on way up, says Douglas
Date

Gold Coast prop Luke Douglas reckons Scott Prince has fulfilled an enduring thought offered by Aristotle about 350BC, when the Greek philosopher suggested ''pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work''.

Prince's fine form has helped the Titans claw their way into top eight contention and, as they prepared for today's showdown with hotshots Souths, Douglas credited his halfback's attitude as crucial in the team's late surge.

''He's starting to enjoy it,'' Douglas said of Prince. ''You know he's 'on' when he starts doing the little flick passes and stuff. Sometimes you don't need it but, when you're going forward for him, and he has a little bit of time, he comes into his own. He's enjoying himself.

''I'd guess that, in the past, he had to do it all on his own, but with [five-eighth] Aidan Sezer there, his kicking game takes an added pressure off Scott. We also have a few forward plays which allow Scott to sit back and we don't really need him. He only has to come in when he sees something, or if he wants to to do it.''

Douglas, who left Cronulla at the end of last season, described the Rabbitohs as a team that kept opponents guessing. ''They have strike power across the park; a great forward pack and [halfback Adam] Reynolds is controlling them well. Then they have the outside speed with guys like Nathan Merritt. There's a logjam in the eight. We have one toe in, but have to also kick the door down. We have a fair bit of work to do to get ahead of the pack but we've been playing with a bit more confidence.''

While their season started poorly, the low note being news the club was in danger of collapsing under its debt, Douglas said the team's collective confidence grew with each game.

''We had a slow start,'' he said. ''We had a lot of new players and it took time to build that confidence and get to know each other's play. We had a little patch in the middle of the season with a few good games, but lost it with a few injuries. I reckon time, and the fact that we're finding [form] at the right time of the season, is great. We're controlling the ball and not coughing it up like we were.''

Souths prop Eddy Pettybourne, who will match muscle with Douglas, said he'd learned a lot this season from the likes of Michael Crocker and Roy Asotasi about leading from the front. ''I try to do be the best I can,'' Pettybourne said. ''I don't act as a leader but I follow their footsteps. I try to do the little things right because I think that's why the likes of Michael Crocker and Roy Asotasi are still here.''

A little summary from a game that held potential but turned into a mistake-a-thon.

Pluses: most didn't give up, the forward pack, the halves.
Minuses: Apart from the ineptitude of Michaels, the unbelievable lack of involvement from Idris and the overplaying of Zillman, Gordon is obviously playing injured and Mead must have got injured because his final 20 were woeful.
Turning point: first half disallowed try that should have had us up 10-6 and instead ended up 6-10 after another poor refs decision.
Thought: we are still in it but Falloon has to go and Bird needs to come in plus Zillman should be an option not a stock play.

Not too shattered, we blew a good chance but live to fight on.

Melbourne, Parra, Penrith and Manly. Can see this going right down to the final round.

Edit: Tigers have a brutal run home after Parra with the dragons, dogs and storm on there list.

Ridge needs more game time. Also, as valiant and brave as miles may be, he looks injured badly. I have never seen such slow play the balls.

We could have easily won that game, the bunnies couldnt break our line and only scored from our mistakes/good fortune.

Rabbitohs defence won them the game. They couldnt penetrate our defence. Most of their tries were flukey or off our mistakes. We should have won but the effing refs! This win would have been vital in terms of confidence and position on the ladder. But refs have to love the Rabbits dont they?

But i have to admit we threw away possession at vital times. Zillman was an ounce away from being a hero but silly knock ons made him the hermit.

Didn't think we had it in us to pull back the score line like that, proud of the boys for that. Have to take the positives out of performances like that - could of just as easily been 2 points for us.

This is where our problems seems to manifest themselves. Instead of good solid attacking options, we are relying on plays that come off 1% of the time.

Some good work in defence from the bunnies helped dislodge the ball at critical times. It was a high quality match and I enjoyed it. Such a match showed up some fringe players eg. Michaels, a better centre could have put Kev away a few times.

Myles is a dam workhorse, so much work

Valiant effort after the Rabbitohs knocked any chance of Zillman having a good game out in the first set. Really seemed like mistakes flowed from both Zillman and Michaels. I thought Sezer and Prince were pretty good. Mini was over-used and got in Idris' way too much. We needed Idris to create problems and we didn't use him. Well done to Souths who defended very well and put themselves in a position to take advantage of any luck that came their way and they took it. Massive games against Melbourne and Manly but just as importantly we need to put away Penrith and Parramatta well. Still not hopeless but it was an opportunity lost today and we're still looking for a left centre.

Odwyer, michaels and the video refs all made some pretty poor decisions today. I'm not gonna rag on princes intercept too much, I thought he played well.

I hate being critical but how bad were the two video ref decisions before half time, firstly if O'dywer gets tackled and doesnt pass to mead to score the onfield referee is signalling 6 again, so we got punished there and then second decision I still cant work out how the video ref can miss a blatant knock on off Mcqueen in the air the replay showed and not once did the video ref go back and have a look at the replay, absolute disgrace the refereeing at the moment and it wasnt only in the titans loss, I am still dumbfounded on these two decisions

What was the crowd figure today?

Not too shattered, we blew a good chance but live to fight on.Dave wasnt injured and played solid the whole game. He made 160 mtrs all from solid hitups. That is as good as you are gonna get from Kev til next year, he is playing injured.

I think Champion could have been a big difference out there but I am hearing that he wont be back this year. Bird will be a big boost.

I still love Myles work but the negative is his extremely slow play the balls

Very gutted not to take home the goods today, but the boys tried their guts out.
Thought we were actually a bit fortunate with a few forward passes and for mine the Rabbitohs 2nd try seemed to go back from McQueen. Souths were great in defence and seemed to rise to the occasion when adversity set in.

I reckon we can give Melbourne a shot as it'll take more than an icing against Penrith to convince me that theyre back. Dont write us off yet fellow brothers, as we're still very much in this finals race.

The only difference between a loss and a victory was the two terrible ref decisions that took a try off us and give a obvious knock on try to the Bunnies. I disagree, I don't think you can have a completion rate in the 60s and be playing well. Far too many errors and loose passes were more life stupid choices and their were a lot of those. The game was there for the taking. Refs did not help at all.

By Wayne Heming AAP Sun, Aug 05, 2012 - 7:27 PM

A restrained Michael Maguire expressed concerns refereeing calls had the potential to hurt all NRL teams after two controversial decisions featured heavily in South Sydney's 22-18 victory over the Gold Coast on Sunday.

Just 24 hours after frustrated Manly coach Geoff Toovey called on the NRL to urgently review the obstruction rule after claiming it cost his side two tries in their 8-6 win over the Cowboys, video referee Sean Hampstead again found himself in the spotlight following two disputed first half decisions - both of which fell Maguire's way.

"I think coaches over the past few weeks have emphasised everything about the refs and there were obviously some interesting ones out there again," the Rabbitohs coach said.

"I'll go through the right channels and talk to them about it.

"I just hope at some stage it doesn't hurt us."

Hampstead disallowed a 33rd minute try to Gold Coast winger David Mead, ruling teammate Luke O'Dwyer had pushed rival forward Chris McQueen in the back.

A minute later Hampstead gave the green light to a try up the other end of the field to Rabbitoh winger Justin Hunt after numerous looks at the video.

Titan's skipper Scott Prince however felt a slight touch by McQueen had deflected the ball forward.

"I thought I had it covered," said Prince when asked if there was a deflection.

Cartwright, who in the past has unloaded on match officials was prepared for the line of questioning.

"I thought you (media) would want to talk about that," grinned the Titans coach at the post-match press conference when asked about two highly controversial decisions.

"I don't think anyone would have been surprised if they both had gone the other way."

Cartwright then borrowed a Forrest Gump quote to express his thoughts saying: "you don't really know what you're going to get".

Cartwright's comments may have been different had he not received an official NRL memo last week outlining what coaches could and couldn't say about whistle blowers.

"I don't even know what I can say to be honest with you," he said.

"I'd rather not talk about the refs, they're coping a hard time as it is."

Souths deserved the win, their sixth in a row for the first time since 1994. The final scoreline made closer after late Titans' tries to Aidan Sezer and Kevin Gordon.

Prince, revealed he had "copped a decent spray" from Souths players after speedy winger Andrew Everingham picked off his cut-out pass and sprinted 90 metres to score in the 51st minute to extend the lead to 16-6.

"I just said 'I'm coming back for you, so don't fall asleep'," he said.

Asked if he could repeat what was said to him, Prince replied: "we'll just leave it on the field, that's what normally happens."

It was scripted ... first Michaels tried to put him away and then Prince showed him how to do it ... that wasn't what beat us nor the refs, it was the "few loose passes".

Tamwelg is right, we are a professional team and those "little" mistakes are the difference between winning and losing ... and the best prepared players are able to limit them every week.

I loved the game apart from the obvious bad decisions made by Hampstead but i left the Stadium knowing we were beaten by the team that might just win this premiership....& our Team competed for 80 & didn't lay down for a minute

Brilliant games from Bailey who was the best player on the park,
19 hit ups for 214 meters :surprise:
35 tackles
Myles was awesome too & he does it with far more niggle than most which the opposition hates ..
15 Hit ups for 119 meters
43 tackles

The bloke who was the most damaging in attack was Mini who may have dropped a couple of balls but he was trying to play more like Bird .

Agree with someone earlier, Ridge needs more time & i would start with him as he's a better defender than Mini & then change them around where Mini would be more damaging but that change will become a lot harder to do when Bird makes his comeback on Friday night

I may be the only one that thinks Michaels didn't have a bad game :nope:

Bring on the Storm , this team has no Fear of them :fight:

Yeah- there were mistakes but for the most part it was a good game of footy and competitive and I'm not going to say we couldn't ask for more because we could. We could ask for a win.

The refs are the refs. I think their incompetence had an effect on both teams positive and negative from what I saw, and the reports I've seen.

Attention now turns to Melbourne- difficult to get a bead on them with a win over Penriff. Even we flogged them.

Stuart Raper & Bill Harrigan NRL.com Mon, Aug 06, 2012 - 6:10 PM

Referees co-coaches Stuart Raper and Bill Harrigan answer your questions from round 22 of the NRL Telstra Premiership.

Roosters v Dragons

Did Rooster Roger Tuivasa-Sheck ground the ball in the in-goal area before setting up Mitchell Pearce's length of the field try in the second half?

The ruling is play-on in this situation because his intention is to get out of the in-goal area. He is not deliberately grounding the ball. Tuivasa-Sheck is not tackled, so he is entitled to get up and run. If the player decides to play-on, it is the same ruling as if he is in the field of play, there is no hand on him, so the tackle is not complete. He has every right to stand up and play on and it is obvious that that is his intention.

See the incident

Cowboys v Sea Eagles

What was Tony Williams's try disallowed for? Did Anthony Watmough's contact with Glenn Hall stop the defence from making a play?

The line Anthony Watmough ran was an obstruction, it was straight at the player. It stopped Glenn Hall from having a chance to make a play.

See the incident

Why was Brett Stewart's try disallowed, did Steve Matai effect the play?

They got this call right, Steve Matai runs straight at Cowboys centre Brent Tate. Brett Stewart runs behind Matai and this action stops Tate from having a chance at making the tackle.

See the incident

Was it the correct call to penalise the Cowboys for being offside which led to the match-winning penalty goal?

Yes, this was the correct decision. It rebounds forward into a Cowboys player who is in an offside position, this was accidental offside, but then he plays at the ball by hitting it away, so the referee had no option but to penalise the Cowboys for being offside.

See it

Raiders v Broncos

Are you happy with the dummy-half try to Travis Waddell? Does the person playing the ball stop the Broncos defence from having a fair shot?

There is no obstruction in this one. The Raiders player playing-the-ball does not impede anyone attempting to make a tackle on Waddell, it is a fair try.

Titans v Rabbitohs

Did Titan Luke O'Dwyer take out Rabbitoh Chris McQueen? Did you agree with the decision to penalise O'Dwyer and disallow the try?

O'Dwyer pushes a player out of the way in his attempt to get the ball and you can't do that. The right decision was to penalise O'Dwyer for this action.

In the 35th minute, is Dylan Farrell offside from the kick before hitting it back to Sam Burgess? Is there a knock on from Chris McQueen before the Rabbitohs score?

They got the correct decision on this. When you freeze frame the first kick, it shows that Dylan Farrell is on side. He hits it back to Sam Burgess who then kicks the ball back across field and there is a contest for the ball. Chris McQueen does clearly touch the ball, but it goes backwards off his hands. The ball then hits Scott Prince, who is behind McQueen, and the ball travels towards the Titans in-goal area off Prince's hands. This is why it appears the ball has travelled forward. But it has not come forward off McQueen. It is a fair try.

Bulldogs v Knights

What did you make of the penalty against the Knights in the 78th minute due to a non-tackle call?

This was a very harsh penalty against Newcastle. It should have just been play-on.

Cut and dried which way? O'Dwyer does some dumb things on the field, but I just watched that video ref replay 5 times, McQueen should have been penalised if anyone was going to be, moved into O'Dwyer then tried to milk it by falling down. I think McQueen radiates an aura that makes people named Hampstead see the opposite of what really happens in his immediate vicinity.

Titanic
06-08-12, 09:13 PM
If O'Dwyer keeps his hands out of McQueens back it's a try but he shoved him which makes it contentious. I still think the ball traveled forward irrespective of Prince's involvement but neither of those decisions lost it for us either.
