Haha that's so true...
If we had Sezer I would be pretty confident for this game but our years of struggle to find a 5/8 pre-Sezer as well as our poor history with local derbys against Broncos leave me about as confident as I was going into the Canberra game.

Get Rankin back at 5/8 but we could experiment with Dowling? Or get Beau Henry. But Carty said if any one in the halves gets injured then Rankin will be called into the team.

If Carty picks Zillman then...

I can't see how Ridge can be left out of the starting 13 ... he has really stepped up and adds so much more than Harrison's 40 tackles. I know Harrision is a favourite but I don't think he is anywhere near as physical as Ridge.

Zillman playing a good game doesn't mean anything else except that he had a good game. Srama is our best hooker and Falloon went ok but from the bench only offers limited coverage. O'Dwyer v Hodges is ok for mine and Idris on any of the Brisbane centres/backrows is also ok. Sezer is the real worry and we need a real 5/8 there eg Henry or Rankin or even Dowling. Michaels who can never string two good games together should not be considered this week nor should the goat who led with his chin.

You don't blood people when your team is in dire need of a win. You blood them in the early rounds, origin period or closing rounds but only if your a certainty for a top 8 finish. i agree we should give him a go but not atm, we can't afford to blood Dowling,we need a specialist halves player to fill sezer's void.

Keep the changes minimal & simple:

Existing combination: Peyroux back into center, Mead back on the wing, O'Dwyer back to the bench, Micheals out(as good as he was).
Stronger Bench: Falloon & Henderson out, James & Lawrence in.
Injury forced: Sezer out, Rankin in.

Peyroux and Mead combined well in round 8 against the donkeys, making plenty of good runs off a tackle breaks & offloads, and scoring our only try. Alex Glenn is good for a few missed tackles so they should be able to profit from that. Wouldn't mind seeing them switch positions in attack a few times either. But Alex will also be making alot of strong runs down that edge, so we also need guys there who will tackle all night.

We need more from our bench. In a game where we had 57% possession, Henderson & Falloon didn't contribute enough.
Not that Falloon was bad, it was a good game from him - What I mean is; him taking minutes off Srama and taking up a bench spot & subs was not worth it.

James & Lawrence offer so much more in attack and defense. In 30 minutes against the Warriors, James made 41 tackles and missed none. Lawrence bends and breaks the defensive line every game and makes more meters & breaks in less minutes than any other of our bench forwards.

If they manage to keep the error rate down, and play like they did for the first 70mins against Canberra, they can win. But if they stop playing after 70mins, I doubt they'll have the margin to keep the match from the Donkeys.

I reckon he's their best attacking weapon close to the line. When he makes a run to the line - if he doesn't muscle over and score himself, he has at least drawn in 3-4 defenders in the process and weakened our defensive line for the next play. Plus as a strong second rower playing center, he'll be making meters down that edge anyway, and compounding that - Prince will probably be standing there too. Whoever plays #4 & #11 for us will be making alot of tackles! I back Ridge & Peyroux to cover that.

Sezer cleared of fractured hand
Adam Gardini | Monday 16 July 2012 3:33 PM

Jetstar Gold Coast Titans five-eighth Aidan Sezer has today received a boost after X-rays cleared him of a fractured hand.
Titans medical staff today diagnosed Sezer with damaged tendons in his left hand in the wake of Sunday’s 38-26 win over the Raiders in Canberra.
The 21-year-old five-eighth could still line-up in Friday night’s local derby against the Broncos at Skilled Park, with his injury to be monitored throughout the week.

Idris will be marking Hodges on our left side.
Depending on how Carty lines up our right side, it will be O'Dwyer or Peyroux marking Glenn.

Also, Copely is out with a broken leg. So it'll likely be:
Kev\Idris vs Rookie\Hodges
Mead\Peyroux vs Beale\Glenn or Mead\O'Dwyer vs Beale\Glenn
Unless Carty keeps Ranga in the mix, which is possible......

Was I dreaming last week? I thought he started Idris on the right and O'Dwyer on the left which after the opening crap worked pretty well.

Hodges will own Idris who can't defend laterally but O'Dwyer will haul him down, whereas Idris can confront either of the backrows they can play in the centres. Gordon can deal with Maranta but Whitchurch looks like one of those lanky, boney ****s. Mead running off Idris is better than Gordon running off air.

Idris runs sideways so much it's hard to tell where he was supposed to be, on paper he's on our left, but he seemed to be hanging around the middle alot......
Credit where credit is due though, I think Idris has stepped it up abit and is looking more dangerous in attack. I agree defensively though, with his frame he always will struggle laterally.
Hodges is brittle though, I'd like to see Jamal put a few shots on him..

Brisbane Broncos winger Dale Copley to miss six weeks with a fractured leg

THE Broncos' backline stocks have been further depleted ahead of Friday night's derby clash against the Titans with winger Dale Copley to miss up to six weeks with a fractured leg.

Copley's left-side colleague Jack Reed broke his leg a fortnight ago and now the boom winger has joined the rugged centre in the casualty ward after lasting just 17 minutes of Brisbane's 10-8 defeat of the Warriors last Friday night.

Copley is expected to miss four to six weeks and his injury opens the door for rookies Lachlan Maranta or Aaron Whitchurch to take his place for the Queensland derby at Skilled Park.

Maranta appears to have the inside running, training on Copley's left wing this afternoon as the Broncos began their build-up for the Titans clash.

Copley confirmed news of his break today but says the upside is he will be available for the Broncos' finals campaign.

"I have a fractured fibula so I'm out for four to six weeks, similar to what Jack Reed has done," he said.

"Hopefully it heals well and I can get back before the finals and get a few games under my belt before then.

"It came from nothing. It was a tiny little hit but obviously it did enough damage. It was pretty bad luck. Josh Hoffman was getting driven back in goal. I tried to help him and just copped a little knock and rolled over on my ankle. I felt something go and went off after that.

"It's just bad luck I guess."

Copley backed Maranta or Whitchurch, who made his NRL debut a fortnight ago against Cronulla, to fire against the Titans.

"Whoever gets the job will do a good job.

"We know here there is always another guy if you don't perform, so it puts pressure on whoever gets the nod to perform on Friday and if they don't there will be someone nipping at his heels.

"That competition is good for the club and keep you on your toes."

Glenn and Te'o return from the outer as lynchpins in coach's plan to shut down Idris

THE Broncos' backline stocks have been further depleted with winger Dale Copley to miss up to six weeks with a fractured leg.

"Alex and Benny have played those roles before. I'm also looking at Lachy," Griffin said.

"That's the way we finished the game last week, Alex and Ben did a really good job (when Copley went off injured in the home win over the Warriors) so we'll look at that again.

"Dale has been tremendous for us, it's a bit of jinxed hole on our left side, but that's life."

The in-form Idris has attracted criticism for inconsistent displays this season, but Griffin is wary of his game-breaking ability in the right mood.

"It is hard to stop him when he's playing well. He's a massive guy, he has a lot of speed and agility," the Broncos coach said.

"They have strike power right across the park, that's why they got eight tries (at Canberra Stadium last Sunday). Scott Prince is in good form, they have rep forwards, they have Idris out wide and (William) Zillman at the back with his speed. They can come at you from any area so we need to be up for this one."

Copley lamented his freak injury but has found consolation in the knowledge he will be fit for Brisbane's finals campaign.

"Hopefully it heals well and I can get back before the finals and get a few games under my belt before then," he said.

"It came from nothing. It was a tiny little hit but obviously it did enough damage."

Near full-strength Titans to tackle Broncos

QUEENSLAND Origin workhorse Ashley Harrison will be named in an extended Titans line-up today as the Gold Coast prepares a close to full-strength team for Friday's showdown against the Broncos.

After reigniting their finals hopes with a win against the Raiders in Canberra on Sunday, the Titans are desperate for a derby win to maintain their momentum.

Harrison missed the Origin decider with a broken toe but is expected to line up this week, while Nate Myles (sternum) and Luke Bailey (ribs) are also likely to back up after returning from injury in Canberra.

After battling injuries all year, the Titans finally received a break yesterday when scans revealed five-eighth Aidan Sezer had tendon damage to his hand and not a fracture which could have ruled him out for almost a month.

The boom recruit will be named today and officials are hopeful he will be able to play, although re-signed youngster Jordan Rankin is waiting in the wings if Sezer is unable to recover.

The victory over the Raiders put the Titans just two wins outside the eight, with Friday's blockbuster shaping a season-defining match.

The Titans faced a short turnaround but coach John Cartwright said yesterday his troops would ride the momentum provided by Sunday's win and be ready to face their neighbours.

"There's an added (incentive to win), especially for us. They've pretty much entrenched themselves in the top four," he said of Brisbane.

"We're battling away, we've got to keep winning and it probably doesn't get any harder than the way the Broncos are playing at the moment but we're going to relish it.

"We haven't got a long time to get ready for the game but I think that's a good thing.

"The guys came in this morning in a great frame of mind and (to have) the local derby at the end of the week, it doesn't get any better."

Back-rower Ben Ridge continues to battle a biceps injury, with the Titans likely to name an extended bench for Friday's clash.

Harrison, Mead return for local derby

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans have today named State of Origin forward Ashley Harrison and winger David Mead to return for Friday night?s anticipated local derby against the Brisbane Broncos at Skilled Park.

Jetstar Titans Coach John Cartwright today named Harrison to make his comeback after missing the past two matches with a broken toe, while Mead returns after attending the funeral of his father in Papua New Guinea last week.

Outside back Steve Michaels, who scored two tries on the wing in the absence of Mead against the Raiders, has been moved to the centres while utility Luke O?Dwyer shifts back to the bench as cover for injured forward Ben Ridge (pectoral).

Five-eighth Aidan Sezer has also been named after being cleared of a fractured hand on Monday in the wake of the win over the Raiders and forward Ryan James has been included on a five-man interchange bench after being 18th man in Canberra.

Jetstar Titans Coach John Cartwright said it was a bonus to have Harrison returning against the Broncos.

"It's a little bit earlier than expected. We were banking on him for next week but he's come through all the hoops and got through that session,'' said Cartwright.

"But he hasn't had anyone stand on it or anything yet so at this stage hopefully that's the side we can take in.''
Cartwright said Mead

"I thought we'd miss him last week and who knows what we could have done if he was there,'' said Cartwright.

"He's had a really tough couple of weeks but he's come back enthusiastic. He was a bit worried about his spot in the side but he didn't have to worry about that.''

Harrison back for local derby clash

Wayne Heming AAP Tue, Jul 17, 2012 - 12:58 PM

Gold Coast's representative lock Ashley Harrison will return from injury in Friday night's NRL derby with Brisbane but Greg Bird was not in coach John Cartwright's squad on Tuesday.

Bird (pectoral muscle) had been hoping to return for the Skilled Park blockbuster and could still be a late inclusion if he improves further by Thursday.

The Titans, who need to upset Brisbane to stay in the race for the top eight, will have young winger David Mead back after he missed the win over Canberra to attend his father's funeral in Papua New Guinea last week.

Harrison is back earlier than expected after he was ruled out of this month's State of Origin series with a fractured big toe.

Forward leaders Luke Bailey and Nate Myles have both declared they will play despite carrying injuries.

Bailey played with a pain-killing injection and protective padding on his damaged ribs against the Raiders and may need a needle again to take the field on Friday night.

Utility back Steve Michaels, who grabbed a brace of tries on the wing in Mead's absence, will move to the centers while utility Luke O'Dwyer drops back to the bench as cover for injured forward Ben Ridge (pectoral muscle).

In further good news five-eighth Aidan Sezer has been named after scans cleared him of a fractured hand.

Cartwright has further bulked up the size adding 121kg giant Ryan James to a squad already featuring intimidating centre Jamal Idris at an imposing 127kg.

Brisbane Broncos' Alex Glenn set to take on Gold Coast Titans' Jamal Idris in Queensland derby

BRISBANE's Mr Fixit Alex Glenn has been handed the ominous task of shutting down Titans giant Jamal Idris in Friday night's Queensland derby at Skilled Park.

Broncos coach Anthony Griffin was initially toying with the idea of naming Glenn on Brisbane's left flank outside Ben Te'o following the loss of left-side duo Dale Copley and Jack Reed, both to a fractured leg, in consecutive matches.

But it is understood Glenn will start at left centre, while rookie winger Lachlan Maranta is tipped to replace Copley for the crucial clash with the Titans, who must win to keep their slim finals hopes alive.

The 199cm Idris terrorised Canberra in his best game for the club last Sunday but Kiwi Test star Glenn, who tips the scales at 101kg and has been a defensive rock in the back row this season, is well equipped to stop him.

Glenn failed to train this morning for the second consecutive session due to calf soreness, but Broncos coach Anthony Griffin insists he is a certain starter.

Five-eighth Corey Norman is also expected to face the Titans, despite sitting out today's slick training run at Red Hill to rest a minor groin complaint.

Broncos winger Gerard Beale backed Glenn to handle his much-vaunted backline showdown with Idris, who is 19cm taller and 16kg heavier than the Brisbane utility.

"Alex is our leading tryscorer this year so he will still do his best to get over the line," Beale said.

"Reed and Dale (Copley) are a loss, they both add a spark to the side, but in saying that the new guys (Glenn and Maranta) add a different spark which is good."

Asked if Glenn and Norman were in doubt for the derby, Beale added: "It's been a long season so they may have pulled up a bit sore (from the Warriors game last week). But they will be there Friday night."

Brisbane hooker Andrew McCullough said the Broncos are wary of Titans hardmen Luke Bailey and Nate Myles, who are primed to rip and tear despite taking rib and sternum injuries into the clash.

"They are tough players and if they are fit they will be good to go," he said.

"Nate showed in Origin just how tough he is, he was outstanding and Luke Bailey has played for Australia as well, they are the toughest players at the Titans.

"The Titans have improved a bit in the last few weeks and they are getting their combinations right.

"They always turn up against us so we're preparing for a really physical game."

Hoffman playing through pain for Broncos

Brisbane fullback Josh Hoffman will carry a sternum injury into Friday night's NRL derby clash with Gold Coast, aware he may have to manage the painful chest ailment into the finals.

"I sort of kept that a bit quiet," said the gritty Hoffman, who took a severe hammering from South Sydney star Greg Inglis recently before copping another battering from an aggressive Warriors last weekend.

"I've been getting banged up in a few games, a few head knocks and injuries.

"It was a bit sore after doing a bit of contact so hopefully it pulls up ok for Friday because they can be painful to play with."

He has been training with a chest guard to minimise bruising.

"It can get hard to breathe sometimes but it's having that mentality to play through it," he said.

Hoffman produced a clutch play against the Warriors last weekend by cutting down tryline-bound giant Manu Vatuvei with less than a minute remaining.

He wasn't thinking too much about confronting a rampaging Jamal Idris if he breaks Brisbane's defensive line on Friday night.

"It was scary when Manu broke the line and I had him coming at me," smiled the young fullback.

"It'll be a tough challenge if Idris gets through but hopefully the boys do a good job of controlling him."

The potential damage the 127kg Idris could cause Brisbane's cursed left side defence - which has lost English international Jack Reed and Dale Copley to broken legs in the past few weeks - was a big talking point today.

But Idris, who has more tackle busts (46) than any Titan other than fullback William Zillman (55), may have his hands full defending stand-in centre Alex Glenn, Brisbane's leading try scorer with nine so far this season.

Glenn is a much better defender than Idris who because of his sheer size can at times get found out when forced to change direction quickly.

"Alex has got some really good footwork and hopefully he can catch Idris on his heavy foot and get a few tries," said Hoffman.

"Idris though is pretty dangerous. He's very physical, he's a big boy. He's going to be hard to contain so we're going to get as many players in the tackle as possible."

Hoffman is pleased young winger Lachlan Maranta will play his third NRL game to replace Copley.

Maranta has been foolproof in his two games against North Queensland and Cronulla, getting through 160 minutes without a single error while making almost 100 metres a game.

"He's improved every game he's played. I'm glad Hook (coach Anthony Griffin) picked him for the job because I really enjoy having him there," Hoffman said.

The Titans have named representative lock Ashley Harrison and flying winger David Mead who missed last weekend's win over Canberra to attend his father's funeral in Papua New Guinea.

Ah can't wait for this game! If Bird is a late inclusion, I'll be feeling pretty damn confident in a win. I'm a little iffy on Michaels in the centres but he played well last week and maybe it'll be like Zillman and he'll play a great game against his old team.

Ash to face Broncos despite broken toe
Travis Meyn | 12:01am July 18, 2012

TOUGH Titans lock Ashley Harrison has revealed his broken toe looked like it had been "hit by a hammer" as he prepares to make a brave early return to help salvage Gold Coast's season.

Harrison, who couldn't even put a shoe on until a few days ago, got through his first field training session yesterday since suffering the injury against the Dragons three and a half weeks ago.

The Queensland Origin star will undergo a fitness test tomorrow but is expected to face the high-flying Broncos at Skilled Park on Friday night.

He is unable to wear any form of protection in his right boot to protect the toe -- which was fractured in six pieces -- and expects the Broncos to target the injury.

"Absolutely. I'm definitely expecting a few of them," he said when asked if the Broncos would sneakily stand on him.

"If someone stands on it hard enough it'll still hurt and be sore.

"I won't put anything (protection) in there. I'll tape it up, strap it a bit and away I'll go.

"It'll be four weeks on Friday so it'll be healed. It might be a little bit sore but it'll be all good."

Harrison's likely inclusion is a boost for the Titans who also welcome back flying winger David Mead while five-eighth Aidan Sezer is set to play with a hand injury.

Sezer trained with the rehabilitation group yesterday but coach John Cartwright said he was confident the rookie would be fit.

Emerging backrower Ben Ridge will miss the match with a slight pectoral strain while young prop Ryan James has earned a call-up at the expense of Michael Henderson. NSW gun Greg Bird will be out for at least another week with a pectoral injury.

Cartwright said Harrison was a huge gain and would build on the momentum created by Nate Myles and Luke Bailey, who returned against the Raiders.

"You saw the difference in the sides from the Warriors to Raiders when you can put a bit of experience there," he said.

"You can't put a value on what those guys are worth.

"With another one coming back this weekend in Harro, it certainly makes everyone in the coaches box feel a lot more comfortable."

Looking at those stats, they are abit misleading. Despite actual results, the games have been tight.
Two of those wins were long distance field goals in extra time from Sir Darren. And another win was our home semi, where the refs kept ripping us off and giving the Donkeys golden treatment.

Well Sir Dazza is in the commentry box now, and it looks like Donkeys are actually starting to get pulled up for things like forwards passes.

Definitely time to start turning the stat around :fight:

The biggest worry for me this weekend is the last 11 minutes of our game against the Raiders. Manly leaked heaps of points late against the Eels and then travelled to play the Knights and continued playing the same way, getting lapped by a lesser team.

I'm concerned by the teams attitude. They are probably walking around with their chests out thinking they were great against the Raiders when they really should be filthy at their last 10 minutes - which were basically unprofessional - and looking to redeem themselves in our biggest home game of the year.

This game will be worlds away from the Raiders game where the big men for the Raiders completely shirked their task with disgraceful first contact and afforded us WAY too much space in the backs. People actually thought O'Dwyer was good against the Raiders - he wasn't really, he just benefitted by a completely inept opponent.

I don't want to see us get our pants pulled down at home the way we did in Round 2. The team returned from Townsville surprise winners and then undid all the good work by playing hopeless footy against the Raiders. We need a professional approach and we need to play better than we have played all year to get the win.

Agree 100%

Even before the 70min mark, there were some flatout stupid defensive decisions that cost us. Prince & O'Dwyer were the main offenders. O'Dwyer cannot defend out wide,we've known that for awhile and got another lesson last match, he's better used playing in the middle coming off the bench.

Our center pairing are our weakest points, and the Donkeys will no doubt try to exploit that. Idris can't mover latterally, Michaels is known to struggle with decisions.
I hope to see Harro, Mini & Myles stabilising the defense on the edges, they are our better defenders and our centers will need their help. Let Bailey, Douglas, O'Dwyer, James, White & Falloon work the middle.

Defense is going to be our key to success. I think we have enough confidence and form to score enough points.

it was definitely an unprofessional end to the raiders game when you consider that included in our slim chance of making the 8 is the fact we will likely be even on points and will need points difference....and instead of grinding the game out and almost getting back to 0 +/-, we leaked 20 and are now -26.

i blame the coaches as much as the players...they should of been aware and instead of thinking geez, what a relief to lock up a win, should have been getting the runners to explain the situation and drive home the importance to the players of finishing well.

i feel good about the broncos game btw.

Gold Coast Titans v Brisbane Broncos
Skilled Park Friday 7.35pm

After passing one do-or-die test with flying colours last week, the Gold Coast face a much sterner one this time around when they line up against the might of the Brisbane Broncos.

The Titans are one of a number of clubs ? along with the Warriors, Dragons, Knights and Raiders ? still in contention for a finals berth in hot pursuit of eighth-placed Wests Tigers following last week?s 38-26 demolition of Canberra.

But with just seven rounds remaining and four points separating them from that eighth spot they can ill-afford a slip-up now.

Queensland derbies are always intriguing and Friday night?s clash is no different. Having started 2012 sluggishly ? perhaps a confidence hangover following their disastrous 2011 ? the Titans have gradually rebuilt their season and will face Brisbane confident of springing an upset.

Certainly they boast the talent to do so. Despite the absence of NSW forward Greg Bird through injury, the Titans welcomed back Luke Bailey and Nate Myles last week and their forward pack is the equal of any in the competition.

They will also be pleased with the continued improvement of young five-eighth Aidan Sezer who has dramatically eased the pressure on captain Scott Prince, while fullback William Zillman enjoyed arguably his finest game in Titans colours last week ? making five line-breaks, scoring two tries and running for 240 metres. In doing so he became just the third player in the past decade to produce five line-breaks in a single game (alongside Jamie Lyon in 2003 and Brent Webb in 2006).

Still, as the Warriors found out last Friday, it?s not easy to get on top of this Brisbane outfit.

Having enjoyed a welcome bye in Round 18, they began their run home to the finals by downing the Warriors 10-8 in a thriller and can now look ahead without the distractions of the representative season getting in the way.

In fact, although Canterbury is indisputably the hottest side in the NRL right now, it?s fair to say that the Broncos have been the most consistent in 2012. They currently sit two points behind Melbourne and Canterbury on the ladder and the motivation to move into the top two will remain a strong incentive over the coming weeks.

In Gold Coast team changes lock Ashley Harrison makes his return from the toe injury that saw him miss the State of Origin decider, while speedster David Mead is also back after attending his father?s funeral in Papua New Guinea last week. His presence sees Steve Michaels move into the centres with Luke O?Dwyer dropping back to the bench.

Giant forward Ryan James is also part of an extended bench, with Ben Ridge out due to a pec muscle injury.

Lachlan Maranta comes back into the Brisbane outfit on the wing, replacing Dale Copley who fractured his leg against the Warriors last week. Copley will be sidelined for the next month.

Broncos forward Corey Parker celebrates his 250th game this week. Since making his debut in 2001 he has notched 3310 runs for 24,711 metres, 7532 tackles and 52 line-breaks. He also needs just 62 more points to become the third Bronco to score 1000 career points.

Watch Out Titans: The Gold Coast?s back three can expect a working over. No side enjoys putting the ball high off the boot more than Brisbane ? and that includes both the standard attacking bomb and the cross-field kick for their wingers. The Broncos have put up 61 bombs in 2012 and 53 cross-field bombs. The Titans have also proven to be susceptible to the cross-field kick, having defused just 13 of 30 this season at a meager 43 per cent.

Danger Sign: The main goal of the Titans this weekend must be to prevent Brisbane enjoying quality field position, because if they let them set up camp near the try-line they will be in trouble. Brisbane is the best side in the Telstra Premiership at scoring from close range, having done so 42 times in 2012 (between 0-10 metres). Likewise, they have scored just three tries from beyond halfway, so keeping them at distance is the Titans? best option.

Watch Out Broncos: The return of veteran prop Luke Bailey from a rib injury last weekend proved timely for the Gold Coast and he quickly settled back into his role, running for 169 metres from 21 runs in the win over the Raiders. His front row partnership with Luke Douglas will be a factor up against the powerful Brisbane forwards.

Danger Sign: While most sides favour attacking on one particular side of the field, the Gold Coast are much harder to read and pose threats across the board. So far this season they have scored 21 tries on their left edge and 18 on their right (where bulldozing Jamal Idris has returned to in recent weeks). They have also crossed 14 times up the middle, so the Broncos will need to be wary right across the park.

Aidan Sezer v Corey Norman: Opposing young guns Aidan Sezer and Corey Norman go head to head this week in a battle that will go a long way to deciding the outcome. Sezer has proved to be a tremendous recruit for the Titans this season, producing six try assists, five line-break assists and 18 tackle-breaks in his 11 appearances. Meanwhile, Norman has been a standout for Brisbane. Called in to replace the great Darren Lockyer in the No.6 jersey, he has played all 17 games ? showing tremendous maturity in helping the Broncos maintain their status as one of the NRL?s top teams.

Where It Will Be Won: Dominating in the tackle will be crucial here ? especially for the Gold Coast who must work overtime to reduce the opportunities Brisbane have to attack close to the try-line. If they win the tackle and ultimately earn time to both kick to the corners and pressure the Broncos kickers, they will go a long way towards causing the upset.

The History: Played 12; Broncos 9, Titans 3. Brisbane has dominated this contest in recent times, having won the last six meetings dating back to 2009. They hold a narrow 3-2 record at Skilled Park.

The Last Time They Met: A dominant first-half display inspired by young five-eighth Corey Norman saw Brisbane power to an impressive 26-6 win at Suncorp Stadium back in Round 8.

Norman had a hand in three Broncos tries as he proved himself a worthy successor to the great Darren Lockyer; however it was Alex Glenn who got the ball rolling when he picked up the scraps of a Peter Wallace bomb in the 11th minute before dashing over next to the posts. Norman then threw a superb short ball for Glenn to crash over for his second and it was soon 16-0 as Andrew McCullough darted over from dummy-half.

Poor ball-handling didn?t help the Titans? cause as they surrendered 62 per cent of the first half possession to their opponents, with Brisbane surging to a 20-0 lead at half-time following a swift backline move that sent Gerard Beale over in the corner.

The Titans finally responded shortly after the break with a well-worked try of their own for Dominique Peyroux to crash over; however Norman would have the last say with a stunning piece of play that saw him toe ahead a Glenn pass, kick again off the ground then tap the ball back inside for Josh Hoffman to race away and score between the sticks.

The Titans made 14 errors and were forced to make an extra 88 tackles than their opponents, with winger David Mead one of their better performers on his way to 148 metres and five tackle-breaks.

Corey Parker worked tirelessly for the home side with 155 metres from 23 runs and 35 tackles.

Match Officials: Referees ? Jared Maxwell & Alan Shortall; Sideline Officials ? Russell Turner & Chris Butler; Video Referee ? Paul Simpkins.

The Way We See It: The Titans have the talent to upset Brisbane here but the fact is that they are yet to prove that they can maintain the level of performance they showed against Canberra last Sunday from week to week. Brisbane, on the other hand, have been models of consistency this season and it is no fluke that they sit in third spot on the NRL ladder. We see them taking home another two points here.

Televised: Channel 9 ? Live 7.30pm (Qld), delayed 9.30pm (NSW); Fox Sports 2 ? Delayed 1am.

Bird rules out return in NRL derby clash

INJURED NSW Origin star Greg Bird says he won't jeopardise Gold Coast's NRL's finals push by fast-tracking his return to play in the NRL derby clash with Brisbane on Friday night.

The tough backrower was not named in the Titans' squad for the match but was still expected to test the pectoral injury suffered in the Origin finale and push for selection.

However, Bird today said he would miss the game in order to ensure he was fully fit for the rest of the Titans' push toward the finals.

"If it was a semi-final I may be able to push for this week but we have some pretty important games after this one so I am going to rest up," Bird said.

"There is (a temptation) but if I come back and re-injure it like I did at the last Origin it will probably rule me out for the rest of the season.

"I will sacrifice this game for the last six."

Glowing praise for Parker ahead of 250th Broncos game

Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin paid a glowing tribute to Corey Parker who will line up in his 250th game for the Broncos against the Gold Coast on Friday night in some of the best form of his NRL career.

The 30-year-old goal-kicking lock will become the sixth Bronco after Darren Lockyer (366), Michael Hancock (297), Allan Langer (288), Andrew Gee (279) and Shane Webcke (263) to reach the milestone.

Parker, who scored a try in his first game for the Broncos in 2001, started his career in the front row but is now firmly established as the side’s starting lock as an 80-minute a game player.

‘‘Corey is a real pro and extremely diligent in all his habits,’’ said Griffin on Thursday.

Advertisement ‘‘He’s very diligent with his training habits, his rehab, his diet.‘‘He’s very mentally tough, he can play with injuries and he recovers from injuries quicker.

‘‘He turns four week injuries into two and he turned bumps that might keep other players out into something he can carry.

‘‘His mental toughness is one of his great assets.’’

Some of that was evident after Parker suffered a nasty gash that opened his shin to the bone playing for Queensland in the second State of Origin game in June.

Despite medical opinion he would certainly miss the third Origin game he made a stunning recovery to secure his place in the series’ decider.

Griffin said Brisbane expected to confront a Titans side with a do-or-die attitude at Skilled Park on Friday night.

Despite reports Greg Bird (pectoral muscle) would not take the field Griffin said Brisbane had trained expecting the NSW Origin hit man to play.

Young winger Lachlan Maranta will play his third game for the Broncos on the wing for the injured Dale Copley and Griffin said he expected the Titans to test the youngster out.

Harrison in injury doubt for NRL derby

Queensland State of Origin forward Ashley Harrison is in serious doubt for Friday night's NRL derby showdown with Brisbane after breaking down at training on Thursday.

Harrison, who missed the series-deciding third Origin game earlier this month with a fractured big toe and hasn't played since, lasted less than 20 minutes before quitting the Titans' final session on the Gold Coast.

Coach John Cartwright virtually ruled him out on the spot but will delay making it official until Friday morning.

"It didn't look good. He's pretty honest, Harro (Harrison). If he was right to play, he would have finished the session," said Cartwright.

"I'd say he'll be out tomorrow."

Cartwright said while it would have been great to have Harrison on deck against Brisbane, it "wouldn't get us down".

"There's nothing we can do about it, we'll have a chat about it and make some decisions in the morning."

Dare I say it but I saw Michaels do it to a fullback last weekend and Zillman and Mead in other games but I would doubt Gordon's confidence on that leg to step at speed.Raiders forum turned against Robinson for missing the Michaels tackle which I thought was being very harsh. He was at long odds to stop a flying winger at full speed.

Norman, Sezer set for blockbuster clash
Travis Meyn | 12:01am July 20, 2012

THEY are two of the most exciting young five-eighth talents in the game and tonight's Titans-Broncos blockbuster could be decided by the performances of Corey Norman and Aidan Sezer.

Beenleigh product Norman has stepped into the big empty shoes of the retired Darren Lockyer in style, providing the perfect foil for halfback Peter Wallace.

Sezer has been a revelation since donning the Titans' No. 6 in round 7, playing every match since then and stamping himself as a genuine NRL pivot. Statistics obtained by The Bulletin show the opposites have been dominant playmakers for their teams this year and tonight's Skilled Park showdown could come down to which youngster fires under pressure.

Norman's 17 matches this season have yielded six tries, eight linebreaks, 12 linebreak assists and 12 try assists, while Sezer's 11 appearances have resulted in five linebreak assists and six try assists for him.

Sezer will battle through a painful hand injury to partner Scott Prince in the halves tonight.

However, lock Ashley Harrison yesterday ruled himself out after failing to recover from a broken toe.

The Titans have their worst winning percentage against the Broncos, winning just three of 12 matches between the southeast Queensland rivals, and Brisbane has won the past six encounters.

Gold Coast is battling to keep its season alive and coach John Cartwright said the 21-year-old Sezer would manage the hand injury for the remainder of the year.

"It (hand strapping) was more precautionary than anything," he said.

"The main thing was he got through the (training) session and had no ill effects from it.

"He'll just strap it and keep it tight. He'll probably have to do that for the rest of the year."

Sezer and Norman's clash is an exciting prospect but Cartwright played down the match-up between the two.

"They (media) like to talk that up but it's not very often they come face-to-face," he said.

"They're both five-eighths and whoever can get their side on towards a victory will get the headlines, but it's very seldom they come up opposite each other.

"It's typical of young guys that come through these days.

"Confidence is never much of an issue, which is what you need to play at this level. The best thing for Aidan is that he's got a mile of improvement in him as well."

Prince has returned to near his best form since Sezer's introduction into the top team, with the five-eighth taking much of the pressure off his skipper.

Sezer is averaging nearly 10 kicks a match, relieving Prince of a duty that's been solely his for some time.

Prince said Sezer had dealt with the hand injury well this week and his "toughness and character" would take him far.

"He's overcoming an injury in his hand but he trained really well," he said.

"I think you'll find, being a young guy and overcoming a serious injury in his knee last year ... shows his toughness and character."

I bet there is a 0% chance that the Broncos turn it up for Parker's 250th the way we did for Bull and Presto. A significant Broncos milestone is the last thing we need heading into this game.

In the past 5 derby's we are averaging:
8 points for
24.4 points against

Last Time Played: Titans v Broncos

NRL.com Fri, Jul 20, 2012 - 12:00 PM

A dominant first-half display inspired by young five-eighth Corey Norman saw Brisbane power to an impressive 26-6 win at Suncorp Stadium back in Round 8.

Poor ball-handling didn’t help the Titans’ cause as they surrendered 62 per cent of the first half possession to their opponents, with Brisbane surging to a 20-0 lead at half-time following a swift backline move that sent Gerard Beale over in the corner.

Excellent win, but we lost our way in the third quarter of the match. Hard to believe Ben hunt was marking up on Jamal for 10 minutes and Jamal didn't see the ball. Falloon went well but he was the dummy half during the 20 mins after half time and we seemed directionless. Neither Sezer or Prince
Looked to take control and neither did Falloon. Zillman is indeed in a purple patch lets hope it continues. Idris is starting to play well out on the right and I thought James' involvement was good when on. A left centre is needed and maybe one of our backrowers will end
up there as I can't see Michaels there for extended periods and Peyroux is too risky. I did like the way Dom got stuck into his defence and didn't shirk even after his mistakes.

Roosters will be a challenge but the kind we need. Let's hope Bird and Harrison are right for that one.

Our season is still alive. Lots of must wins from here.

None of us who head out to Skilled Park have had the chance to feel like we do tonight since we beat the Warriors in the finals in 2010.

For the last 2 years we have trudged out of there week after week kicking stones all the way home. For once I feel like the team supported US rather than the other way around by actually winning a game that was hanging in the balance.

Has anybody mentioned the fact that Prince actually tackled tonight?? His kicking game was poor but he really held his own in the defensive line for once.

The standout for me was Bull - he really wound the clock back tonight.

Bring on the Roosters next week!! We get 7 days recovery against their 5. Every game is a semi-final from here to the end of the year.

Agree with Karnage, it's our best win in over 2 years the boys defense was awesome I thought the entire 17 played well, sure Peyroux made a couple of errors but he made up for it ;)

Idriss may not be the fittest player in the team but I'd prefer to have him out there for us than against us , his defense tonight was great.

Bails makes a huge difference & is inspirational with his whole game & the way he leads the team , he is our Captain & as Fatty & Wally said "He is the best Kick Chaser in the game".... Easily the Man of the Match.

Also fantastic games from the born again Zillman,Myles & the bloke who gets bashed by plenty on this forum Chalky..thought he wasn't far off being our best.

On a very funny note & may not have been picked up by many but when the team took the field for the 2nd half Myles was the last player out & he came drinking water from a paper cup & when he ran past Teo to get onside for the kick he threw the half full cup at Teo's head :rolf:

Prince looked tenacious and hungry in defense.

Bailey getting smacked in the face three times in a minute then scoring the try was sweet and rewards for his fearlessness to just keep taking it forwards.

Zillman... Goodness me! At half time had 1 try assist, three line breaks, 10 tackle busts and 152 metres from 10 runs. What a remarkable turn around in an insanely short period of time.

Great win, great effort and a night to be a proud Titan.

20-07-12, 11:55 PM
Not suprised by the win tbh. I always thought we always had it in us. Prince looked very involved in defence but i didnt want him to tire out too much, we need him involved in attack as much as possible. Zillman has turned the tables so quickly i cant believe it. He is getting involved heavily and working well off Prince.

Credit to the forward pack. They toughened it out there. Bailey, Myles, Douglas and co have been fantastic for us in the last couple of matches. Steve Michaels proved to us why he shouldnt be in the team with that shocking knock on which should have been an easy try. Also if Luke ODwyer scored as well the scorecard would credit us much more.

From all this praise we still need to work on things if we want to continue winning. That is to not give away stupid penalties. I am pissed that we throw away penalties and this will come to haunt us. We are lucky it didnt for this match but we need to fix this problem ASAP.

Wow...I fully enjoyed that that game...I was actually cheering the Titans instead of criticising them.

Broncos have a very readable attack and Prince not only read their play but tackled with his shoulder...good to see him play with confidence. I think Idris feels for comfortable defending beside Prince...he knew who to take. Nice hit on Glen.

Zilmans potential is turning into results and I'm glad because fans were starting to lose their patience with the lack of attack.

Karnage, your right about the poor kicking game...I think Prince is better off attacking with bombs once we approach the oppositions half.

I don't really like Falloon coming on for Srama. Srama was going just fine, didn't see any need to sub him really. Gives him a rest yes, but at this stage of the competition we need our best players on the field as much as possible and as we've already seen, Srama is capable of an 80 minute stint.

I think Mead may have lost a little confidence when he tried to 'fly like an eagle' to take an early bomb that he was never gunna catch (on your side). He was hesitant on the next bomb and never went for it and the Broncoc scored. Other than that I thought he did OK. But it is hard to focus on all 17 players so I may have missed things that you saw.

Zillman isn't the one who was playing poorly all year. Really, his game hasn't changed. He has always been sniffing around and supporting forwards who can get free and slip the ball.
The problem was that the forwards weren't hitting him with the ball. Now they are. Also, our backline has been **** with horrible timing. Timing is still not great but is much better.

First time I've seen Idris run with purpose for us. Even last week he was still ambling.

Great game last night. Nothing feels better then beating the donkeys. The donkeys ans are going off about their side performing badly, but I think they went alright, they were just beaten by a better team. Their defense was solid and hard to crack (they gave us nothing down there end in the second half), but we actually put on some decent set moves in attack. Yes our attack is still not 100% fluid, but geez some of those moves got me excited and it is something I haven't seen from Titans in ages if at all.

Our defense still missed some tackles ey should have made but they made up for it with some fantastic scramble. The guy wearing the number 7 defended the best I've seem him min his entire career.

If Zilly continues to play the way he has the last 2 games I do not want anyone else I mthe number 1 jersey, he has been brilliant. Jamal looks much better on the right side of the field. Chamos either needs to learn the left side or we need a left centre.

I agree with previous comments that Faloon looks good, but the side suffers without Srama out there. Do anyone else notice in the game against the Raiders just before he put Ridge over the line when he was held up, Prince was screaming for the ball to the right, but Srama saw something left. Initially Prince wasn't happy, but that exactly what we need in the number 9.

Didn't see the game but when your player maker calls the ball, he should get it....especially near the line.
He doesn't get that many opportunities attacking the oppositions line and he wants to capitalise.

Cameron Smith doesnt always necessarily listen to Cronk when Cronk is calling for the ball. And Smith is the best hooker in the game. Good hookers pass the ball to the correct players to create opportunities. If Srama sees an overlap on the left side of the field and Prince is calling for the ball on the right side of the field who should Srama pass the ball to? I see hookers as a very important component to the team. Nobody wants a hooker that always passes it to their halfback or else the opponent will easily predict what will happen. Srama keeps the opposition guessing and that will take him to places.

Yes you are true with Smith and that Cronk shouldnt overcall Smith. But in 3 years when Srama develops, i reckon he will turn out to be a prominent play maker in any team (similar to Smith but not in terms of the way they play).

You are right. Those stale hookers that run around in the NRL who only tackle and pass to their halfback will never be a good hooker. Hookers are the first people to receive the ball so they need to make full use of it and not take it for granted.

I havent been this happy about a result in years, nothing beats the feeling of putting Brisbane Super League to the sword!

Lots of positives. Luke Bailey, was impressive. Always putting everything in. Always chasing the ball. Getting smashed while carrying an injury but he keeps going. A victim of foul play but he doesnt milk. Great to see him score.

Zillman has been amazing and I havent seen such a turn around in form in a long time. He is like a hot knife through butter in attack and rock solid in defence.

White, Srama, Mini, Sezer and Prince were all noteworthy. Although I was screaming for Carty to put Srama back on. We need to junk this two hooker rotation bull****.

It was a great effort against the old enemy without our Origin players of Bird and Harrison. Big holes but our boys stood up.

Broncos points came from late in the halves and one from a kick and one consulation. Still disappointing to let that last one in.

It was a definite 8 point try. Dirty stuff coming in with a swinging clinched fist. See how scary Luke Bailey was when he came up from that try? Lucky other Titans got between him and Hoffman.

A passable crowd, but still not Derby worthy, we need to do alot more to promote this clashes.

It was so funny to see AB on TV! One of the Space Boys along with Titus.

I thought Fatty did (does?) have a role with the Titans at one stage?

Agreed on the two hookers thing- we need Matty out there. Disagree with the 8 point try though- I don't think there was any malice in it and I'm content it was a genuine effort to dislodge the ball. All is not what it seems in super slow mo.

Well, it doesn't really matter about intent. It would be a penalty anywhere else on the field, 8 point try was fair.

Agree with everyone on wanting to scrap the two hookers idea. While Falloon hasn't done anything wrong and played pretty well last night, the whole time he was on I was still anxiously waiting for Srama to be put back on

I agree with Amiline...it deserved an 8 point try but no suspension points.
When you see the front on shot of Hoffman, his eyes aren't looking at Bailey head or the ball...it was a wild attempt to dislodge the ball but he still connected him high.

It was strange...at first I thought he meant it and I've never seen that from Hoffman...the front angle of Hoffman shows his intentions.

About 3 years ago Titans signed Matt Vautin (Paul Vautins son). I think thats why Fatty is biased towards the Titans.

Yep! He is a Queenslander and Im sure the Broncos and Cowboys mean little to him.

Even the great Ken Arthurson says the Titans are his #2.

2 Broncos on report and I won't be surprised if Hodges goes on report. On pretty well the last hit up of the first half Hodges used his elbow to the head of Michaels. Michaels never came back in the second half.

My mistake. I just watched the reply and it was Ben Te'o that cleaned up Michaels...So a report on a report?

.....oh, and in the 58th minute (if anyone stills has the tape) Te'o did the same thing to Douglas, but not the same damage done....so a report on a report on a report?

In defense of Michaels a Broncos arm came between him and the ball. Yeah, he should have caught it but I think he readjusted to take the 'deflection' that never came. I actually thought it hit a Broncos arm but no one blew up over it and I am yet to see the replay so I guess it didn't happen.

Nah...No Broncos arm, but it was a bullet pass and forward to so no matter in the end. I thought Michaels did OK again last night.

We Titans supporters tend to find something wrong with someone and we run with it? I thought Michaels did OK as did O'Dwyer. I also think Baby Huey had his best game ever....someone I have bagged in the past but not recently...and Princey also had a blinder in the defence side of things... another I have bagged in the past but never again. Well at least not until the next time. :D

Michaels only lasted on the right until the first Broncos left side attack  He shooted out they went around him then he was ushered over to the other side  Then the team defended well for the rest of the game in that structure.

Michaels can not and should not be playing first grade. As many have stated many times; he gets an A for effort but an F for skill levels. Thanks but no thanks. So who should be out there on the left? Gordon with Peyroux on the wing until we can develop (haha) a centre or buy one. Anybody rate Hymel Hunt or any lower grader?

So when the exact same thing happened later in the game (I think it might have even been Bailey involved in the Bronco's last try) another one should have been given, right?

Not sure what try you are talking about...Bailey tried to stop Glen going over but missed before him before the line...didn't see anything wrong with it!

Either Hoffman needs an optometrist or it was at the very least reckless because Bailey was at full stretch leaving a fair distance between the ball and his indestructible melon. The closed fist was not a good look.

I think Hoffman should just be happy that there were so many Titans players holding back Bailey from getting at him.

In any case, it was a well deserved try for Bailey since he rarely gets one but I wonder what he's on! He's always the first one or two players on the kick chase which is remarkable considering both his age and position.

I finally managed to watch the match via the Internet and man, it was a thrilling and well deserved win. First, the work of Zilly & Mead was just excellent - loved the zig-zag pattern. Second, I think Hoffman needs an eye exam for punching Bailey in the face upon his try. Honestly, his fist was not even close to the ball.

And by the way, what the hell was that with Wallace reacting on Princey in the 48th minute? Doesn't he have self-control?!

During the match itself I texted my cousin, since he was there with his son, and boy he enjoyed it a lot. My other cousin (a Bronco fan) was less amused... Muahaha
